Talkin Fell afternoon walk: Road at 567570- Kelky Fell- Simmerson Hill- Whinney Hill- 567570. From Simmerson Hill on bw via pt 283 on road, road to Whinny Hill farm, then along by wall to gate*. ATV tracks then over the summit and back down to the road at 563569. The last section of a fine walk on heathy moorland access land (*except the *gate, no problem). All sparsely grazed so trods and paths worth using!pwheeler05/09/2022
Why on earth was Whinnyfell farm ever built in such a high & isolated spot up near the summit at 320m? It does have a couple of flatter pastures alongside up there but even so - it is hardly sheltered and with a steep access track from the moorland road- it seems an oddity with a high chance of being snowed in. Today Santa gamely arrived a week early in the shape of the Asda Home delivery van. Judging by the prolonged stay the driver was enjoying a well deserved cuppa and possibly a few of the mince pies they had delivered. The main Pennine watershed crosses this summit -surprisingly much closer to the W coast at Carlisle than the distant E coast at Newcastle -and yet Cumbria county boundary ignores this divide having veered off NE from this main watershed just S of Cold Fell. 2 of 4 on a 2+hr circuit from RSPB cp below Tortie Hill.Chris Pearson15/12/2021
