I've often seen the monument skylined in the distance while driving north on the A1(M). This time Sonja and I were on the way to Longhoughton but diverted to Penshaw to walk up the hill from the carpark. There are extensive views all round plus the monument itself (which is based on the Temple of Hephaestus apparently) plus a trig. Breezy evening, showers, a lot of family groups on the hill. | Skip | 10/10/2020 |

After visiting Seaton Delaval Hall, Lesley and i continued to visit Souter Lighthouse then Washington Old Hall and as this was nearby we made this our last stop-off, parking below with a set of steps leading upto this grand monument. We walked onto the top then i circuited it making sure i got the high point. We headed off to Richmond where we had booked an overnight stay, stopping off for tea at the William Stead, Wetherspoons in Darlington en-route. | Dazingdale | 04/10/2019 |
Simple enough walk up the tourist route ...... trig bagged as well. | 3 kinnears | 28/09/2019 |

From the car park at the bottom of the hill. Can actually see it across the Tyne from my back bedroom window, but only been up it a couple of times. | JulieB | 22/04/2019 |

Shameful that I lived in Northumberland for nine years and failed to visit this gem, despite seeing it from a distance so many times. It doesn't disappoint at close range | Colin Crawford | 25/03/2019 |
Overwhelmed by this superb Theseum style monument- those Victorians knew how to think big. Lovely evening with superb views. Tiny trig dwarfed in comparison. Radical Jack, local MP/ peer and Canadian governor must have been some man. Built 1844 in his memory. | Denise | 16/03/2019 |
Path up SE side. Nat. Trust but free. A fine little hill with trig pillar, great views and stunning Theseum like structure visible from afar. | RichardM | 16/03/2019 |

Detour from the Weardale Way (from Chester-le-Street). We were denied access onto the Right of Way from Victoria Viaduct around the side of North Farm by the resident. So had to take another detour pass Low Lambton Farm, then followed the road along the side of Penshaw up to the monument. It was a hot day. We descended across the field via Penshaw North House Farm back onto the Weardale Way and continued on to Roker Park, Sunderland (21 miles in total for the day). | NorthernWayfarer | 24/06/2018 |
A very impressive building. | Campbell Singer | 22/05/2018 |

A glorious short evening walk on the way home from Newcastle. Follow the signposts to Penshaw Monument and park on the lane below the stepped path. The floodlight Theseum and the view of Sunderland's and South Shields' lights are magnificent. | Nick Down1 | 08/02/2018 |
