Hawthornthwaite Fell Top [Fell Top S4633] from GR: SD 55850 52120. Up track of Catshaw Greave then quad tracks to SD 57051 51087, traverse across to pick up footpath marked on OS map at SD 57432 51265. Descent via fence line on watershed to mound at SD 57398 50879 then fall-line back to the top of the track. In hindsight this would have been a better ascent route too.ronaldo33325/09/2021

I walked up Langden Brook beyond the path until not far from the summit, some tricky stream walking but good fun if you enjoy that terrain. Then up onto Hawthornthwaite Fell Top - still 10,000 seagulls nesting up there. I wondered into the 'zone' by mistake, little ones running around and nests with eggs whilst they guard and threaten from above. Keep to the boundary fence on the ridge, it is just clear. Avoid the area between that fence and Langden Brook. Trig still fallen! Then I walked back via Holdron Moss and Top of Blaze Moss, very dry up there just now so surprisingly easy walking for this area.meltdiceburg15/06/2021
A million Seagulls, obviously nesting on the summit and clearly not happy that I was there.conanharrod22/03/2021
Dirt pull-in for 2-3 cars at SD 5585 5212. Easy walk up Catshaw Greave to end of the vehicle track (drivable but gate locked). No tracks visible after that due to a good dusting of snow. Hit the fence at Johnny Pye's Clough Top and followed it up to the top.jonglew01/01/2021
from Grizedale Bridge along fence line all the way, back over fiendsdale head, up to track on windy Bank, towards Bleasdale top before dropping to Arbour and climbing back over Stake house to Grizedale Bridge.Flatfield20/09/2020
A looooong slog up through squelchy bog from Top of Blaze Moss. Then descended straight down N through long grass and heather to road by Cam Brow.Wheelsy09/08/2020
From just beyond Wells Brook Farm where there is a large lay by with parking for several cars. Over bridge and up very good shooting track which continues as a rough quad track to first summit plateau fence. Plateau gives easy walking in dry weather as much of the peat has disappeared. Worth a visit to the trig. A dentist would have struggled with a root this size.Campbell Singer06/08/2020
From parking just above cattle grid to NW. Up shooters track then across wet moor to fence and even wetter/boggier walk along fence to top.mart079717/07/2020
From parking area by start of shooters' track at SD 5585 5214, up Catshaw Greave to turning circle at top of track - Up path for about 50m to wooden marker post where path disappeared. However, contoured across towards clough & after about 40m picked path again at SD 56491 51018 - Good path continues up the side of the clough to col & fence line - NE on path alongside fence to unmarked summit which lies about 150m beyond the collapsed trig point. Large colony of lesser black-backed gulls on moor. (S)gerrybowes20/06/2020
Up track by Catshaw Greave from road to NW.Only found very short stretches of path from end of track to fence, but reasonable path alongside fence(thanks to recent dry spell). With Bridget.catman20/05/2020

Took advantage of the dry weather to walk up this hill. Up via Catshaw Greave on the road and across the heather to the wrong fence. Had to turn right to find the fence junction which lead to the top. Came back along the correct fence. Much better way. No water around anywhere- totally dry.Andrew Pearson22/04/2019
parked car on road to N. Saw music video being recoreded for the latest single from the Koalas.Adrian27/10/2018
with Adrian. Sad to see Trig fallen overmazz27/10/2018
Up path parallel to Catshaw Greave to end. No onward path to my untrained eye so just a tramp through heather until reaching the fence. Followed fence to trig. Returned same way. 1 HR 30 mins in breeze and drizzle. Ashamed to say I didn't read sign on gate post advising to keep off open land this week, presumably for shooting. Luckily no shooting today.Longwojo17/08/2018
With Jo, followed track/path alongside Catshaw Greave to fence, then followed fence to trig and the various high points. Weather; cloudy, warm, moderate views seawards, good inland.amblerbob12/06/2018
Parked at cattle grid at the Stone of Trough then followed fench over Blaze Moss & Holdron Moss & round to Hawthornthwaite Fell. Returned as outward. On own.MorecambeMonkey11/06/2018
Solo. Followed David Gradwell's route.ADT11/03/2018
Top of Blake Moss, Hawthornthwaite Fell Top from high point in road to E. Return by same route.RobertP28/01/2018
Followed Aye Jimmy's route from Marshaw up and down on the grit track to its end, then poles and a fence to the trig. Also stood on all the highest peat hags on both sides of the fence for insurance. Lots of gulls again, and a goose or two. Solo.Man of Kernow127/04/2017
walked from Fairsnape horribly boggy underfoot wont be doing this hill againcolinfielding07/10/2016
18:45, cloud and rain cleared, golden sunshine, parked south of High House to north and followed grouse butts and my nose watching the sun set over the sea. Confused by lack of trig, walked about 300m west to try and find it, inadvertently (it now turns out) going over the summit. Found the poor trig point and hurried down in near darkness. 1 hour 15 mins.Wycombe Wanderer25/09/2016
From WNW. Good parking at track end.jimbloomer22/09/2016
Good parking to west at start of shooters' track up Catshaw Greave at SD 55846 52124 when track ends keep close to clough to pick up path to 'ridge' fence. intermittent path to summit beside fence, wet in places. Highest point 150m ENE of collapsed trig on north side of fence.David Gradwell16/08/2016
Nice sunny evening ascent with Darren up well maintained track past grouse shooting butts to moor top and flock of roosting seagulls -a recurring theme on these quiet moorland tops. Found a good seagull skull -long, pointy and strong and light. Toppled trig on it concrete root showing the depth of peat decay. Usual selection of peat hags to choose from and visit for summit.Below lies the scene of the horrific Abbeysteads Waterworks disaster of 1984 when methane gas exploded inside the underground works during a public tour killing 16 people.Chris Pearson23/07/2016
Solo. Up from Holdren Moss and Top of Blaze Moss then onwards to Fair Snape Fell. One in a million chance for a lamb that I found neck deep in a bog as not so many folk pass that way. I got it out and walking again but then had to leave it for whatever fate delivered next. Someone will probably eat it one day without ever knowing what drama had played out up there.Aimless Rambler07/05/2016
Up shooting track to gull circling summit & toppled trig.ngthack19/07/2015
unsure of actual date, came up for the trig, it was a desolate day with hailshowersbardolph15/06/2015
Totridge, Fair Snape Fell, Hawthornthwaite Fell Top, Top of Blaze Mosskeithouk06/04/2015
From Catshaw Greave to W, good track ends suddenly then minor paths through heather and bilberries to fence on top. Followed this, not too soggy for nearly a km, with gulls for company, to fallen trig. Then visited numerous 'high points' - impossible to tell which is highest without proper surveying gear.Aye Jimmy22/07/2014
Fell toppled. With the Trigspotters as part of a day's excess of pillars and FBMsMartin R05/04/2014
Revisit from north, limited parking by cattle grid. With RickS, MartinR, ChrisO, PeterT, AlexC during Triggers Spring Gathering. Poor visibility but reckon we found the highest peat hag.RHW05/04/2014
WIth Trigger community group, 7 of us. Parked to North and then across Moor and into mist. Bagged the top by GPS and then to fallen trig. A grand spot, shame no views. See RHW account for names attending.nordicstar05/04/2014
There is roadside space for a couple of cars just beyond the track that gives entry to the open access area (West of Marshaw where the road crosses Bull Beck approx. 581534). Although the gate has private on it, it was open when I visited so I made a 2 minute dash for the open access. This track is, in fact, a gravelled shooting track that leads two thirds of the way to the summit ridge. When it stops at the final butt look to your left. Here a vehicular track starts whch leads all the way to the summit. Using this route it is only an hours walk to the top. PS Don't try and short cut the bends on the way up, it is no quicker, but saves 15 minutes on the way down!moorsman02/10/2013

Bagged on the way to visit the toppled trig of Hawthornthwaite Fell Top after a week of frosty weather. Tends to be very damp moorland when not frozen.Dugswell214/01/2012
