From Bowland Knotts on an undulating and wet path skirting the N and E of Gisburn Forest. Nice rock formations and views in all directions. Long walk out via the Gisburn Forest trails (made even longer by some poor navigation involving fording Bottoms Beck).Vulcan01/03/2024
Walked from Tosside. The direct route is very wet. Most of the non-track rows in the forest are completely overgrown so stick yo thr big tracks and cycle trails. Great view. Nice Crag.HardenC11/01/2024
Pleasant stroll up from the Whelpstone Lodge old deserted house (but serviced farm). Misty day in Forest of Bowland when sunny all over Yorkshire. hey Ho!nickywood113/11/2022

5/5 Tump day in the Forest of Bowland. From the minor road up to the ruined farm at Whelpstone Lodge. Parked on verge in open land at SD 773 596. Followed FP through fields (gates available) then inclined up to gateway in wall over ridge. Good view from trig. Two groups of mountain bikers on the purpose built trail through the forest directly below. (S)silveracorn_alan20/12/2020
Good parking in farmyard of Whelpstone Lodge. House abandoned. Take the almost invisible gras track in the middle of two more distinctive paths. Easy despite thick early morning mist. Navigational problem on return route in thick mist. Probably 300 mts out before I corrected matters and gave myself a rollicking for navigational complacency..Campbell Singer13/07/2020
From Tosside. Direct route on path on east edge of the main Gisburn Forest. Explored all of summit plateau (recommended). Retuned by farms path to the east side. Outstanding views in every direction. NNick Caunt20/06/2020
From Cross of Greet bridge, faint path and shepherds quad bike track directly up to Hailshowers Fell (tiny cairn), on to Bowland Knotts and Whelpstone Crag. Descent through Gisburn forest. Very windy cool May day.Lazylizzie23/05/2020

From Tosside. The walk from Heath Farm to the summit is horrendously boggy. Took a route through the woods and along the access roads back. Much better.Longwojo11/04/2018
Solo. From the public car park at Tosside. A vehicle track to Heath Farm, then challenging underfoot! Good car park, good summit.ADT29/03/2018
A 13 mile walk (30,000 steps on the pedometer!) with L from / to our pet sitting cottage on the north Bowland fells. Followed totally quiet tracks and footpaths through the gritstone walled fields and past upland sheep farms where time has stood still. Dark clouds with shafts of sunlight and golden autumnal leaves. We decided (in our dreams) to buy and renovate the abandoned Whelpstone Lodge. My cold and aches a lot better today after 14 hours sleep!Chris Pearson26/10/2016
Did the same as Jim Bloomer. Park on left just beyond first gate. Nice hill. Visited twin top & my Satmap 10 said it was 2 m higher. Just an observation Mr Gradwell - not casting aspersions against your Abney.ngthack27/04/2016
Drove too far and had to reverse back. Park before walls rejoin road.jimbloomer16/03/2016
Parking available before the wall starts at the end of the Whelpstone Lodge road (alt 925ft). A clear series of tracks across the moor. Visited both tops .... just in case a future survey proves the other is higher!moorsman23/10/2015
Tackled this with a couple of Bowland minor tops (Cross Hills & Big Hill) on a five mile circular walk from the minor road near Dubs Beck bridge at SD 77659 61591. Visited both tops and was able Abney between them - trig pillar top is definitely higher. Rock outcrop c4 south of trig is highest point at SD 75946 59145.David Gradwell29/12/2013
Christmas day in the forest, very peacefulbardolph25/12/2013
As there are two 371m tops it is recommended to go to both. The one with the trig is much more attractive though. Almost like a real hill. Don't throw stones at the mountain bikers below.Martin R31/08/2013
Walked in from road to ENE with Martin Richardson and Charles Everett to bag this craggy trig and its twin top. Also met work colleague Clare Wild who was out for a fell run.Dugswell231/08/2013

From Tosside through the forest and back. The path direct from Heath Farm is extremely wet so ended up taking bike trails back.Jake99410/11/2012

Approached via a lane from the E past Whelpstone Lodge (had a 'Top Withins' look about it). Couple of high points, one with trig was a superb viewpoint.Aye Jimmy26/04/2009
