26 mile clockwise circuit from Weags Bridge using bike between hills. Last hill of 6 - accessed from east (bit dodgy). Bright sunny day. | steveb2006 | 25/10/2023 |
Parked at Wettonmill for a circuit of Ecton Hill (summit and trig), Wetton Hill SW Top and Ossoms Hill. | PGCE | 10/08/2023 |
The highest point is part of a working farm with no public access. I went up from the Wettonmill side and though the NT have provided lots of stiles they don't give access to the highest point. I went down the Ladyside Farm side and spoke to the farmer. He was perfectly pleasant but did point out that I was trespassing. Afterwards I thought that if he was asked he might give permission for access from this side. It is worth a try. | Alan Moore | 13/07/2023 |
Started from Weag's Bridge after a fine porridge and tea camper van brekky. Along to Thor's Cave (v.impressive) then rejoined Manifold Way to Wettonmill. Up through NT Ossoms Hill woodland and onto grazing fields. Slight detour to the summit then into Grindon for 2nd breakfast. ROW to Saucefield Farm and Lee House footbridge. Muddy, narrow, indistinct in places climb to Farwell Lane then much easier trek along Soles Hollow ROW, incorporating an up and down to Soles Hill. returned back to camper via Manifold Way. A great walk of around 4 hours. | summitter | 17/05/2022 |
From Wetton Mill CP. Steep climb through NT land to summit. Nice hill well worth the effort in the bright winter sunshine. 149m ascent | RoguePulsar | 15/12/2020 |
Great day out! 4 Green triangles have gone red! Nice loop Wetton Hill, Wetton Hill sw top, nice trig point on Ecton hill and final summit of ossoms hill. Popped onto thor's cave en route back to Wetton (3:45) | Nicky C | 17/10/2020 |
Lovely walk up from Wetton Mill Tea Rooms with spectacular views of the Manifold Valley. | clivevilla | 30/06/2020 |
In gloom, rain and low cloud and met no one. Grassy summit by wall. Parked at free Grindon church car park. From fp to N. | Denise | 26/12/2019 |
From Grindon church, lane, farm track and pasture in gloom of rapidly approaching night. Permissive path signs have been removed from the grassy hill track. | RichardM | 26/12/2019 |
From parking by church, along road, then up access land to top | PeterD | 01/12/2019 |
Parked at free car park SK0849954538 then walked up road then farm track to summit. Upon return was confronted by farmer who told me that it wasn't access land and that the public never shut gates. 2.2 km 30 mins | John Eley | 01/06/2019 |
Starting at Wettonmill, a circuit of Ossoms Hill, Wetton SW Top, Wetton Hill, Narrowdale Hill, Gratton Hill and Wolfscote Hill. Returned via Wolfscote Dale and the villages of Alstonefield and Wetton. With Jon Collingwood. | BobHancock | 23/03/2019 |
Parked at lane end (SK 08751 54942) bags of room. | DC11main | 06/07/2018 |
Parked near church at Grindon and followed footpath to bottom of hill. The obvious track on the ground has 'Farm Access Only' written at its entrance but slightly further north the track that can be seen on the OS map has a permissive access map at the start. This takes you towards the summit but you have to cross a wall with barbed wire to get into the field with the highest point in it. | Wheelsy | 24/06/2018 |
With my dad. | TLBW | 24/06/2018 |
as for Dugswell 2 | arranc | 17/06/2018 |
IMPORTANT. The whole of the hill is owned by the National Trust and has dedicated public access. No need to seek permission from anyone. All walls have stiles or gates and many locals use it regularly. Walk from Wetton Mill (tea shop and cafe) has stiles over every wall and presents no problems. | moorsman | 09/03/2018 |
Walked up from the church. | Dugswell2 | 13/01/2018 |
Could park at end yellow road to south west - flat, wide, grassy verge - seemed pretty firm. However, today road was covered in sheet ice, even at 2.30pm on a sunny day | carole engel | 07/01/2018 |
4/10 From church car park at Grindon. Much the same as others.. another fine view though the summit itself is a bit nondescript. | stig_nest | 26/05/2017 |
Parked Grindon Church SK 08516 54518. Same route as Campbell Singer. | David Evans | 06/03/2017 |
Parked at Grindon Church and walked along lane. A farmer on a tractor kindly advised of the permissive path which branche off uphill just before Ossom's Farm. Nice gentle climb. | Campbell Singer | 30/11/2016 |
2nd hill of the day on a circular Walk with my daughter Katherine from Wetton village. We Climbed past the Wetton hills to get to Ecton hill and then dropped down to Wetton mill tearoom for sustenance before climbing the footpath that climbs up the flanks of Ossom hill. Once past a herd of cows We Followed the wall up to the wall that then goes All the way to the top. I Climbed over the gate to check both sides. We Climbed over one fence and made our way down towards Thor's cave which We explored before taking the footpath back to Wetton. | Dazingdale | 30/07/2016 |
Parked at Grindon church, took road directly past farm, all quiet at 6pm after hard day in the fields. Then huge track to gate on skyline, summit by wall not far away. | Aye Jimmy | 17/03/2016 |
From Grindon church then straight up the obvious track with fingers crossed not to be challenged(no ROW) for 2 fields passing a St George flag half way(?). Nobody in sight at the farm. The same dustbin lorry that had blocked the road an hour ago now forced me off the track as it accelerated up the steep track behind me whilst walking back to Grindon. The severe winter of 1947 brought particular hardship for moorlands villages like Grindon. Relief was brought by air drop, but one RAF Halifax aircraft crashed into the moors near Grindon during a severe blizzard. | Chris Pearson | 26/07/2015 |
Parked on grass verge on minor road to SW at SK 08677 54789. This Tump looks private on the map but the hill is actually on National Trust land. The required track at the end of the minor road has a sign saying FARM ACCESS ONLY but the farmer was nearby on his tractor and we were granted permission to use the track and visit the summit with strict orders not to go into the field on the other side of the wall where there were lambs and sheep. It was fortunate the highest ground is on the west of the wall so we didn't to to climb over, not that we would after promising the farmer! | David Gradwell | 31/03/2015 |
Simple walk starting from near Grindon Church | RobertP | 01/03/2015 |
