Along the forestry road from the Kirriereoch CP choosing to take a route alongside the Pillow Burn when reaching its bridge ... bad move, very wet in places. The crossing of Cross Burn was also rather tricky following a day of rainfall. Once over, the climb to Carnirock Stone and the Kirriereoch summits was far more pleasant. Then northwards to the Tarfessock tops, a minor path most of the way. Similar path to Shalloch on Minnoch and its Trig, and ATV routes up most of the way to its North Top. Just animal trods to the heathery Shalloch, then NW to the unclassified road and a long road walk back to the start. 6hrs total. | summitter | 13/12/2023 |

from Tarfessock, difficult in thick mist. Went too much to the west on descent and gave myself extra Tussocky moorland to cross. I call this the Honorary Corbett. | IanHHill | 08/05/2023 |

Solo traverse of The Awful Hand from Kirriereoch. Anti-clockwise loop from near the Kirriereoch Loch along the track to the edge of the forest then across the tussock-grass from hell, before ascending Benyellary->Merrick->Kirriereoch Hill-->Tarfessock-->Shalloch on Minnoch and then back down to Kirriereoch via a squelchy forest track and then the forestry track. The flies, midges, mozzies and other insects were incessant due to the lack of wind, otherwise good conditions. Total time 7h 1min. | mproudfoot | 28/08/2022 |

Left Kevin Woods car at the Bruce's Stone car park in Glen Trool, I drove around to the high point on the road north of Caerloch Dhu. We headed south across the heather and bog to gain Caerloch Dhu, from where the paths 'started', then we continued south over Shalloch on Minnoch, Trafessock, Trafessock South Top, then the steep climb up to Kirriereoch Hill.
This is were I turned west descending down to catch a track to Kirriereoch Loch, where I met Kevin. He'd headed south over to the Merrick and Benyellary then down into Glentrool for his car.
06:50hrs all in, hazy in the distant but dry with a light breeze. | chillyman8 | 16/07/2022 |

Kirriereoch Hill from parking/picnic area [359,866] next to Water of Minnock just off track to Kirriereoch farm. Followed forestry roads to very near end of track [388,881] then southwards down ride turning eastwards at end of trees - very wet in places - then over Cross Burn
to find path up ridge to Carnirock Stone and along ridge to summit. Returned by outward route. | RobB | 07/05/2022 |
From car park at bridge out forestry tracks then on to well publicised cairn along atv. Cut down past old sheep fold and easily hopped burn. Steady going to ridge then wonderful walking to the summit with views in all directions on a glorious though chilly day. Returned same way. | SS | 23/04/2022 |

Parked at Kirriereoch picnic site and cycled to end of track. We then followed the ATV track to its end at the edge of the forest. Worked our way down to the burn and slowly ascended to the ridge then lovely walking to the summit. | Crumblie2 | 25/03/2022 |

Start and finish point was Loch Doon Forest Drive Car Park at NX 47663 94198. Followed Forest Drive around Loch Riecawr and ascended via Craigencoof Burn crossing summitts of Shalloch on Minnoch, Tarfessock, Tarfessock South Top, Kirriereoch Hill (Boundary) and Kirriereoch Hill. Descent via Loch Twachtan (where we camped) and Eglin Lane river valley entering forest through Wee Craigfionn. Route very wet and tussocky at lower levels and map and compass required on hills which were shrouded in low cloud. | lindslow | 14/05/2021 |

From South of Stinchar Bridge took the faint track from the passing place for the traverse of ridge to Glen Trool, That took us over Caerloch Dhu, Shalloch on Minnoch, Tarfessock, it’s south top, Kirriereoch Hill, Merrick and Benyellary. with A &C.
Initial low cloud lifted but two very heavy spells of rain, with good views in between. | PeterD | 04/09/2020 |
19 mile, 10 hour walk on the Awful Hand range. I started with part of the Cornish Hill circuit before turning for the hills and climbing to the summit of Shalloch on Minnoch (775m), Tarfessock (694m) and Kirriereoch (786m). Then the fun really began as I dropped down across tough cross country to Tunskeen Bothy and then similar climbing back to Girvan Eye, and then onto Craigmasheenie (539m) and Shiel Hill (507m) before dropping back to the Cornish Hill circuit and completing it. I was very lucky with the weather, the cloud lifted off the summits as forecast, producing some lovely clear views and I even got a few hours of sun whilst on the Hand range. | meltdiceburg | 19/08/2020 |

fa, solo, mist on tops, some heavy rain and windy, 8h 22m, 27.2km, start at kirriereoch cp/picnic area (no sign of any picnic tables!), forest tracks, then path onto west ridge of tarfessock, contorted round then up to nick of carclach, up to the summit of shalloch on minnoch, back down to nick of carclach, now in the rain with mist, along the ridge taking in all the tops, tarfessock, tarfessock s.top, steep and ascent of kirriereoch hill - boulders and scree very slippy/greasy in the rain. mist cleared for the ascent of little spear and the merrick, continued over the nave of the spit, benyellary then across the col to pick up forestry tracks right down to glen trool and the footpath to the bus stop in glen tool village | rum doodle | 03/06/2019 |

Solo. On the Merrick Trail from Bruce memorial. Wet and boggy most of the way with plenty of rain and some sunshine. Picked up some company on the way to Merrick. Cloud came in and visibility severely reduced on my way to Kirriereoch Hill. Returned by my outward route. | Buck | 09/09/2018 |
Up from col with Tarfessock S Top on L of screes, slow going on steep grass to reach wall and tnen went to each summit marker, stopping for lunch behind large cairn on SW summit. Weather remained fine. Contemplated continuing to The Merrick but rejected idea - tired and already behind schedule, so descended W ridge to ford Cross Burn and through marsh to track end and along it to P. First visit was also solo, on 22/06/2015. | jacobus | 04/09/2018 |

Although still officially closed, drove up Carrick Forest Drive along with scores of other vehicles. Cycled up from Loch Riecawr as far as Sleathornrig, thereafter the track becomes too rough to cycle but continues south of Tunskeel through what would otherwise be leg twisting ground. North face of Kirriereoch is steep and stony. Tail wind return via north ridge and Shalloch on Minnoch. | Topographer57 | 19/05/2018 |

A nice walk from the forestry road above Kirriereoch Loch. It's easy to drive to the Y junction on the road, but don't do this during the working week, when the logging trucks are at work. A 4WD would get to the end of the track. The track turns into an ATV track out to the end of the forest, but look for a large cairn, where you need to take the vague right fork downhill. The track goes to a bulldozed section, then traverse above the trees and take deer tracks through tussocks and bogs down to the river. It's then easy to climb up the side of the hill onto the ridge. Lovely summit plateau and splendid views. | Gill | 25/03/2018 |

Parked over bridge near picnic area then walked along track passed Kirriereoch to continue along forest track to below SW of ridge of Tarfessock. Up path of sorts by wood edge then east to Tarfessock. Then onto Tarfessock South Top then aiming for the boundary wall on Kirriereoch Hill then onto its summit boulder. Easy amble to Kirriereoch Hill (boundary) before heading back down the west ridge towards the forest a river crossing before regaining the forest track. | Dugswell2 | 24/03/2018 |

Solo. I followed the Merrick Trail from the road end in Glen Trool over Benyellary to Merrick. From the summit of Merrick I descended north over Little Spear and then ascended northwestwards up Kirriereoch Hill. I located the large smooth rock where the highest point lies. I also went to the cairn on the wall that marks the highest point of the historic county of Ayrshire as well as of the current unitary authority of South Ayrshire. I returned by my outward route. A pleasant dry day. | pwbellarby | 02/09/2017 |

2nd hill of 9 today on my South Ayrshire completion walk visiting Kirriemore hill and the boundary high point before wandering around here in mist, wind and rain. The smooth rock is pretty much a feature in a barren lunar-like atmosphere. Re-visited the boundary high point before continuing on to Tarfessock South top. I took a harder descent line than necessary necessitating some scrambling but views through mist appearing sporadically. | Dazingdale | 20/05/2017 |
Had feared the worst after seeing impenetrable forest blocking access to the open hillside, but turned out to be a delightful ridge walk. No forest operations evident so drove to end of track from picnic site, along ATV track to cairn, turned right down to Cross Burn and onto ridge where a faint path leads most of the way to the summit. | AndrewFinnimore | 07/05/2017 |

Descended ESE to L Enoch; crossed stream at outflow; up over grass and granite slabs to Mullwharcar (12:30). Hills all clear now. Descended back to obvious crossing lower down stream; followed wall across valley bottom towards Kirriereoch. Climbed to col and then to summit boulder (14:30). Returned to col, up ridge to Merrick and down path back to car (17:20). Dry day, good views after midday. | dbb | 30/09/2016 |

A big gap in my Galloway Hills anyway but its promotion made it a must-do. Long walk from the Water of Minnoch CP; SMC Corbetts guide route was good until the advice to follow Pillow Burn where I encountered boggy ground bordering on dangerous for 200 to 300 m. A firebreak from the end of a forest road at GR 388881 might have been better. W ridge joined with relief, for an enjoyable ascent to a fine mountain summit. Continued to Tarfessock down NE ridge then cut across corrie. This was pleasant but not necessary as there was a well trodden route down the N slope, intermittent in places across Tarfessock, then good down Tarfessock's W ridge, down a firebreak, direct to the aforementioned forest road at GR 388881 for an easy walk out. Another great day in the Galloway hills. Sunny, strong NE breeze. | pwheeler | 11/05/2016 |
