Good parking about 40m S. of burn at NX 55160 71356 - N. along forest track for about 30m & as others, made way between a few young trees to pick up the stone & gravel track - Up track which is now overgrown in places to point where it starts to descend (557711) - SE across heather to firebreak & then up over a mixture of dead tussock grass & heather to summit cairn.gerrybowes09/05/2023
Along the main forestry track from near Clatteringshaws dam. The helium balloon is still there. The old track uphill is very overgrown and often hard to follow but better than nothing. Above the forestry the ground is rough but mercifully it's not too far. A clear, dry day, with views to the Isle of Man, Lake District and back over the Galloway hills. On the way back followed the fire break back to the main track which was better except for the last 100 metres or so which was hard work.Owen B07/04/2023
From forestry track end out intending to use track marked on OS25 map. However went early up a firebreak marked with a small cairn and ended up at 370m on a cross track. Followed this for about 200 yards then four yards of felled tree to gain the crap beyond! Seen worse but its a haul to the summit. Came back by skirting trees and got a deer trod for about half of the rubbish which helped greatly. This way up seemed fairly straightforward and unless there is a path/trod from the high point of the gravelled track is worth considering.SS19/03/2023
As for most others, use the old track which I marked with an old helium balloon tied onto the tree at the start.Simon Winton25/10/2022
Cycled from High Bridge on A712, then walked up from NX 551713 turned left just after the burn. Not as bad a walk as I thought it would be. Operated on sumit on VHF for SOTA.G4OBK (Phil)06/03/2022
The ATV track starts at 551 713, as described by others. It is easy to miss. The gravel track is not obvious in places. Follow it up to where it starts heading downhill and a wide firebreak leads to the open fell. Not as bad as I was expecting after reading some previous logs. Solo.Dangerous Dave14/11/2021
Used the ATV track mentioned by others. Seems to be a very old but solid track. Overgrown with heather etc and a bit hard to follow but still easier than the bog and tussocks on each side. App with 25k map very useful. Wide gap at high point of track, also on 25k, leads directly towards summit. Rough going but not as ankle breaking or boggy as many other Galloway hills.govanah11/11/2021
Cycled as far as 55174/71374. Up 'track' which I soon lost. Went NW to area of younger trees and up through them with some tussocks and old timber debris there, via 55545/71446. On descent was on path from corner of wood below summit most of way to 55759/71105 then down firebreak from there. Not too bad until last 50 yds or so before main forest track at 55151/71273. Low branches, thick bushes etc. there.duchally21/10/2021
Cycled forest track to 551 713 where the ATV track starts. Not easy to find the start of the ATV track but it is well worth using-both sides of it have just had new trees planted.dave g28/08/2020
A noxious hill. In summer, there seems to be no sign of the ATV track. Went up a band of knee deep tussock grass starting at the grid ref and, when it got too horrible, up through the endless trees to escape the forest. Above, there's the usual Galloway tussock fest, at its worst in August. The route on to FoF looked so hideous in the thick fog and rain that I refused to believe the compass and climbed the more appealing pt 449 instead. Sanity restored, dead reckoning led tediously across the shite to FoF. The return was even worse; this dim bint decided to head down through the trees instead of using the nasty firebreaks. OK at first in the old Sitka but, near the end, led into Caledonian pines with an undergrowth of dense Sitka seedlings, awful. Found a firebreak going horizontally across vile deadfall eventually meeting a downwards firebreak with properly planted Sitka the other side allowing easy descent to the logging road. Don't climb this hill in August.Gill22/08/2019
From Clatteringshaws dam, down forest road to 547698 then followed wall to Loch Fleet and NE to summit. Returned over Gormal Hill then down to track at 563710. Tussocky but not as bad as I feared. Lovely views from Gormal Hill.Clive G29/04/2019
2nd top of 5 on a mountain bike ride from Gatehouse of Fleet, climbing Craiglowrie then back on the main track to leave bike near the start of an overgrown track that leads up before one has to climb up through roufher grass, over a ridge then another knoll before reaching the summit. Slightly different descent as i went off course a tad. On reaching the main track i did a long circuit to head for Shaw Hill...Dazingdale12/10/2018
With Franni Baggins. Parked at forest track end on A712 near Clatteringshaws Dam. Walked to NX552714 and up hillside on forestry quad bike track (marked on 1:25k as forest track). This is well hidden from the main track. Rough ground to summit. Recommend returning the same way. We continued north east along ridge resulting in a rough descent.raffemeister14/08/2018
Parked in Forest immed W. Went up boundary between old and new forestry which wasn't a good idea. Non forestry conditions were nearly as bad. On way down spotted a ride which saved all bar 200m of thrash. Awful.Thearlaichdubh16/07/2018
Drove forest track to NX 55115 70918 whence followed fire break between old and new conifer plantings out onto fell side after which rough ground to top. Progressed on to Shaw Hill.jonglew26/03/2018
Drove up the forestry road to 551713 then obvious atv track and subsequent firebreak to hill. Returned same way.NormanW24/03/2018
Parking near Clatteringshaws Dam. Along the track as others to the ATV track. Then over tussocky and thankfully frozen turf to summit. Snowy squalls in between sunshineN.Morters17/03/2018
P on forest drive at NX 55158 71363 then up almost hidden track as per bolton. Steady rain, and so much surface water that today's Ayr Gold Cup was cancelled for the first time in living memory.agentmancuso23/09/2017
Drove and parked up at 552715 saving 2.4 miles walk each way. The forestry workers put me 'onto' a track 10 metres south of the burn close to where I parked. This takes you quickly up the hill. Head to the ridge when the track levels out. Rough going across the dry top. Solo. 3 miles and 1 hour 40 minutes.bolton02/05/2017
Much easier than I'd feared. Up track from 551713 and across rough ground to summit.AndrewFinnimore18/04/2017

From car park on Forest Drive, near dam of Clatteringshaw's Reservoir. Route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2016/09/mochrum-fell-cairnsmore-and-fell-of.htmlGayle01/09/2016
Drove to pull-in just S of path starting at 551713, easily up to higher track then a thrash across the moor using deer tracks where possible.Chris Peart23/07/2016
Hard work from the west after a 3km drive down track from north with Jonathan De Ferranti and Mark Trengove.vegibagger04/06/2016
The ground was soft and uneven only on the summit plateau. An easy side track led up through the felled forestry.Topographer5704/06/2016
Drove south down track from A 712 and parked at NX 55038 71938. Then followed route used by others on path up through young plantings over Black Hill of Orchars and onwards on rough ground to summit. Returned the same way. With JdF and CE.Man of Kernow104/06/2016
A glimmer of sun brightened the snowy scene. Not too bad an ascent though route finding more challenging with tracks covered. Some recent felling. A good direct descent adjacent to the mature forest to the south. Surprisingly nice views.jenx12/12/2015
Took the track south from road at dam. Had expected to walk 2.5 miles but found it's an ok off road drive. Parked in a good slot near the faint path mentioned up summit slopes. NB Correct GR for the start of this MTB like path is 55176 71389(this leads to a dead end in young conifers). From its highest point strike up off the path on the final slope to view summit @0.5km off. OK its a bit tussocky and wet in places but OK generally. We descended directly on south side of cleared area to track at GR 55102 70917. If coming up this way look for a faint ride off to left thru young conifers from as yet uncleared older trees at 280m.nordicstar12/12/2015
Track from forest road leads a good way up to first ridge. Then across boggy hollow to summit. Superb views all round.neimcv13/05/2015
along track to 551713 path to high point then open ground to the top.robertphillips22/03/2015
Up from the road at Loch Garroch, over Back Hill of Orchars. Not any great climb but the boggy moorland is hard going.borderterrier28/02/2015
From road end NX546750 to new/old MTB track at NX551713. Up this track to highest point NX556711. then up across moor to summit.GmacT11/10/2013
Cloudy, clear, cold, sharp wind, good viewsiangalbraith19/01/2013
Ascended from Clatteringshaws Loch by track and then across country. Helped by recent felling. Moved on to Shaw Hill.JohnW21/03/2007
Parked at entrance to Raiders road now a rough terrain forest drive. Over River Dee on forest road leading south to Lodge. Stopped for 2 minutes silence at 11.00. Everything was silent - no wild life. Massive wind damage had toppled trees to the east with root balls in the air forming an impenetrable barrier. Retraced steps for a mile to where some plastic ties indicated a green ride going uphill in more or less the right direction. 3/4 mile of green swamp and grass to open moor and ridge for a mile trudge to top at 13.00. Rain. 10 1/2m - 4 1/2 hrs.arranc11/11/2001
tussocky rather dull summit (esp. in mist). drive to c.549705, follow deer path or ride to open hill RHW18/11/2000
