Logged Descriptions  (logged by 47 users)ByDate of Ascent
Uninspiring and wooded summit with no views. Parked in lay-by N of The Elms and followed ROW through access woodland to a gate giving access to summit woodland where a path bore E directly to the top. Access woodland is ringed with deer fence so stick to the path to hit the gates.Vulcan21/01/2024
On a 22 mile bike ride incl Chellaston Hill. Unwisely (in hindsight), accessed from footpath marked at SK 34865 20547 - overgrown, brambles and fences to climb. Not recomended. In fact the hill isnt that recommended. Cycled thru deep floods on way back to Swarkestone.steveb200611/12/2023
Good dirt pull-in to N of The Elms (SK 3459 2088). Walked back down road ~50m for RoW to gate at SK 3458 2036, then due E along a grassy track on S side of hedgerow. The 186m spot height is easily gained, but good luck with finding a higher point.jonglew02/10/2023
Parked at bridleway entrance to N. Ran ( alone) on rights of way then a track. Summit in levelish nettly brambles near track with no distinct feature. Nice Autumnal day. Continued to trig c 1 km N .Denise 16/11/2022
There is a good, solid, parking area where the bridleway starts 200m north of The Elms. Take the RoW that uses the access road to Daniel Hayes Farm for a 100m or so then turn left along the footpath running to the west the The Elms. This runs SW to the wood in which the summit lies. Don't enter the wood but follow a track outside of it until you pick up a solid path that almost reaches the summit.moorsman29/06/2022
From north, just after a heavy shower so got soaking feet and covered in grass seeds. Think this underwhelming hill is my last in Derbyshire.. dreadful finish. Walled garden and hall at Calke were very good though.Nick Canute23/06/2022
Nice area, enjoyed the trees rustling in the wind; the sun a welcome relief from earlier soakings.Wycombe Wanderer08/08/2021
From south. Along track to mast, bear right along line of new fence. After300m at gate with sign shooting in progress turn right the high point is 100m along on the rightcjo04/07/2021
Ecobagging by bike from Belper. Paths from E overgrown with Nettles - one for winter or full body cover. 18th Century Lockup in Smisby was more interesting.davechaffey16/06/2021
To mast, bear right and right again along a grassy path.clivevilla02/12/2020
Walked up the footpath from the road, then followed grassy trackjohnkenyon08/10/2020
Parked on Forties Lane, though you can probably pull in at SK 34724 19852. Hardly any climbing required. Summit easily accessible near a rough vehicle track.RoguePulsar03/10/2020
Followed footpath from the north. Roadside parking. Nice and easy without any access worries. Solo.Dangerous Dave08/09/2020
Parking for one car opposite end of Forties Road to south. Track to mast, bear right over open ground, then right again on grassy track. Gets to within a few metres of the summit.PGCE09/08/2020
Cycled 4 hills today, bit of a big one, but back before lunch. Brands Hill summit can be reached by following the outside of the field, Breedon hill is beautiful and can be see from quite a way off, Pistern hill, nothing but a tick and the views over the trent valley from Gotham hill were lovely. Woulld have been nice to stop somewhere for lunch, but that's lockdownNicky C11/04/2020
From south at road junction. Path to masts, then tractor tracks to top across cleared area. HP just off track.PeterD02/12/2019
From layby at dusk/dark.rhalstead03/03/2019
Parking: Grass verge to the south SK348198. Very flat walk all way to summit.David Evans10/03/2018
Lay-by parking SK346209. Thru' tall metal KG @ SK346204, then east on grassy border round brambly copse to summitcarole engel25/02/2018
Parked at bend on B5006 and followed paths to highest ground. My edition of the 1:25,000 map does not do justice to the area, especially as visibility is not good in summer conditions.JohnW19/08/2017
Path from the S. Levellish summit with brambles, Nettles and Bay Willow Herb growing between the neat rows of young Oaks. No views.RichardM14/08/2017
Followed path from Harry's Wood to the south.Alancache16/02/2017
Solo, wet and brambles, bit rubbish.simon and co03/02/2017
Parked at junction of lane n of Smisby. Fp to 100 ms w of HP in scraggy weedy brambley plantation. Not very scenic. With Jemma.Campbell Singer12/11/2016
From the south along fp into drab weedy field. Negotiated brambles.Jemma Singer12/11/2016
From Smisby. High point somewhere in brambly field, but difficult to say exactly where.Wheelsy04/04/2016
Parked on country lane with short walk around recently planted forestry.Ramblingpaul31/03/2016
Hadn't picked up that there was a hill to do in the south of my home county. Parked down lane to east of crossroads to south and easy on path round newish plantation.Mark Sims28/02/2016
An 8km loop from near Coppice House Farm, returning via Hartshorne. Difficult to identify the highest point but I visited a few contenders.davidpettit8428/08/2015
Parked at 347209. Up track to Daniel Hayes Farm. Turn left on f/p through 3 fields to metal kissing gate. Turn left up ride for 250m, then turn right for 50m. High point in field on right through very long grass. Cowlow Hill enhanced Derbyshire county completion with this one.ngthack16/08/2015
The far south of Derbyshire - a long way from the Peak District for this most southerly of the 129 Derbyshire p30s. A flat wander along mown breaks between blocks of trees planted as part of the National Forest. No real summit feel.Chris Pearson08/08/2015
1st hill of Three today starting at Hartshorne and finishing at Shepshed.Followed the National Forest Way and thrn profiled around the poplar plantation using fp that bisects the non-access land and then following a bearing to the summit area. My gps reading coincided with the highest point being as indicated.Dazingdale03/08/2015
Bridleway from S, limited parking. Highest point possibly banking near hedgerow, or out in field 30-40m W from track.Aye Jimmy05/02/2015
Wooded location, lots of paths. Please ensure you bring an OS Map as the landowners are very protective.timday05/07/2014
Very hot, access becoming overgrown. Part of a National Forest plantation so views such as they are, are becoming increasingly restricted.Mad Eric22/06/2014
Lovely walk up from Calke Abbey via Southwood Farm and the ridge of trees. Gorgeous day to be in the National Forest!DanHolme09/03/2014
Could find no parking on B road. Easy (nettly) access from S: B/way or Woodland Trust, then thru poplar plantation. Very flat area: I waypointed SK 34769 20324 which seems higher than 1:25k spot height but hard to tell. RHW18/05/2013
