Round of six Donalds from Glen Afton - Blackcraig, Blacklorg, Meikledodd, Alwhat, Alhang, Windy Standard - back using wind farm tracks | Colin Crawford | 22/05/2021 |
I headed down to East Ayrshire today, aiming for the four Donalds around the Afton Reservoir, south of New Cummock.
Parking at Blackcraig Farm (about 3km north of the dam), I headed up the track to Quintin Knowe and up a boggy ATV track to Blackcraig Hill (700m) a Graham and Donald. Then in a clockwise motion around the Afton Reservoir, following boggy ATV tracks, I bagged the Donald of Blacklorg Hill (681m), two Donald Tops of Meikledodd Hill (643m) & Alwaht (628m) and ending on the Donald of Alhang (642m).
The plan had been to head west for Windy Standard, a Graham and Donald, but I was tired and didn’t fancy the descent then re-ascent required, so I followed the Afton Water north to the Reservoir. At the north end of the reservoir, I bumped into the farmer, who gave me a lift back down the glen to my car, saving me approx. 3km of a hike.
It was generally dry all day, with small patches of snow already lying. With the farmer’s assistance this took 05:55hrs all in. | chillyman8 | 05/05/2021 |

Circuit of Afton hills | thekirkie pirate | 26/09/2020 |
Parked east of Polskeoch Farm at NS 69214 02525. Took the Southern Upland Way west to the track junction, then the forest road north-west - mind out for timber lorries and windfarm vehicles. Once out of the forest just below the highest point on the road, took a boggy ATV track up to the summit of Corse Hill. Then returned to the road. A new dirt track, not marked on the map, at NS 66013 03277 goes over Ryegrain Rig 600m (a possible Sub-Simm?) to a high aerial. Then followed the fence up onto Meikledodd Hill. Then followed the county border fence up onto Alwhat. Returned by outward route. 19.3km, with 605m of ascent. Solo. | Man of Kernow1 | 18/09/2020 |
From Polskeoch. Useful tracks all the way to the ridge. Blacklorg Hill, Meikledodd Hill Alwhat, Alhang Ewe Hill and steep descent to Lorg. Old track along Ken Valley and through forest eventually joining track back to Polskeoch. With B and R. | jenx | 24/08/2020 |

Continued short distance to Alhang summit, then Ewe Hill N Top, Ewe Hill, Alwhat, Meikledodd Hill, Blacklorg Hill, Cannock Hill and Craigbraneoch Hill, descending to cross bridge at Craigdarroch. Solo. Parked just south of start of track to Blackcraig. Up to Quintin Knowe for a satisfying circuit of Blackcraig Hill, Blacklorg Hill, Meikledodd Hill, Cannoch Hill and Craigbranreoh Hill. Mist lifted off the tops as I started so I could see where I was going- always nice! Rain towards the end. | pwbellarby | 28/04/2019 |

Parked by Lorg Bridge at the end of the Water of Ken road, although the last few hundred yards are distinctly bumpy. A steep grassy ascent to Ewe Hill's wire-bound summit cairn, then Ewe Hill NW Top, Alhang, Alwhat, Meikledodd Hill, Corse Hill with its mossy trig pillar, and back by forestry roads and a quagmire of a path through the trees to Lorg. | Nick Down1 | 18/11/2018 |

Round of Windy Standard, Alhang, Alwhat, Meikledodd, Blacklorg and Blackcraig. | PGCE | 24/09/2018 |
Continuation from Alwhat, reaching fence junction and turning SE to arrive at high point of MH. Rain did abate, prompting removal of jacket only to put it back on a few minutes later. Came back to fence junction and continued on meandering fence to reach col with Blacklorg Hill, where contractors were installing pylon line runnig from Carsphairn to Sanquar. The access road dropping W down to the SE end of Afton reservoir looked inviting, so I planned to return to col after climbing BH, which took last reserves of my strength. Rain didn't let up. First visit to MH was solo on 08/08/2015, dry and coming from BH. | jacobus | 20/08/2018 |
Along the fenceline, with a few twists and turns, from Blacklorg Hill. Passed under some Pylons, the only thing we saw in the mist. Not much in the way of footpath or quad bike track on this one - big harder going than others. | nickywood1 | 19/08/2018 |
Crossed on circuit from Blacklorg Hill to Alwhat | N.Morters | 14/07/2018 |

Solo; walked SE from Blacklorg Hill along fence, first county then forest to find summit pole. Erroneously continued on forest fence but corrected after 5 mins when terrain in front and map did not agree; dropped W to col before Alwhat and went up back on county fence. Early mist cleared to give bright but windy conditions. | seumas | 08/08/2015 |
