Glorious sunny & hot, but fortunately breezy day. With J following the track from just S of Blackhopebyre winding up Glentress Rig, having parked off the road 300m S of the gate on B709. Relatively dry underfoot. Track becomes grassy then heathery further up & goes quite a bit further than the OS map would suggest these days almost to the summit. Wandered SW past the vane across to the minor 657m top & then returned via the route of ascent cutting off the corner of the upper summit slopes. Nearly back at the farm when a tiny chick hopped off the track into the grass as its mother ran about trying to distract us. We left them in peace but it was in more danger from being accidentally munched by the very large number of sheep...NotReallyABagger24/05/2017
A round of Gate Hope: Stony Knowe, Seathope Law, Maiden Law, Windlestraw Law, Bareback Knowe, Scawd Law, Cairn Hill and Early Knowe. Pleasant walking on a day of swirling cloud and sun. Erno Rubik designed the gates hereabouts: don't even think of opening them with gloved hands. A coil of wire mesh at the corner of the wall at 370384 can be rolled back to gain access to the western slopes of Early Knowe.Nick Down121/05/2017

Parked on side of road S of Glentress Rig. Walked on & parallel to Grouse killing ATV track. Very boggy melt water flowing at times. Track goes to probable weather station with microwave link & wind turbine near summit. Very windy had to hold onto icy trig point for summit photo. 5 hours total.rogreeves11/01/2017
Up the track from Glentrees. Boggy track up to the Grouse Butts then fine. Murk.Play2End08/01/2017

Solo from S of Blackhopebyre up track to WL then out and back to/from Bareback Knowe; two ascents of WL in atrocious wet and misty weather - all to bag the Donald Top of BK !jacobus12/09/2015
From Craig Head cattle grid: Stony Law, Seathope Law, Maiden Law, Windlestraw Law, Mossy Rig, Scroof Hill, Dunlee Hill, Yardstone Knowe, Ferniehirst Hill, Great Law. Mostly easy underfoot, bitterly cold wind.agentmancuso02/05/2015
Picked this one off with Brian on the Tour de Glasgee trip in his van. Another superb sunny day up on these grouse fells. Keeping covered up as already sunburnt from previous two days in Scotland, yes sunburnt.Mark T23/04/2015
I took the quick but muddy route.sotabagger15/10/2014
Cloudy morning so this made for a useful half-day- just under 3h from Blackhope Byre over Glentress Rig- track all way to shooting butts then easy enough going to the summit on a sunny afternoon. Haworth's Minor moths buzzing about on the heathery parts of the moor.pwheeler16/09/2014
Sunny, clear and frosty. Quick walk up from Blackhopebyre on the track - which fortunately was frozen hard - in wet conditions this would be a mud bath and probably not recommended. ATVs have churned up the soft terrain & created more tracks across the grouse moor.Roblex19/11/2013
Path very muddy, there is a new track which forkes off very early on which is much better.tallblond10/11/2013
Started from B709 and followed track from near Blachopebyre. Turned left at NT 34407 43534 which avoided most of the muddy track mentioned in other reports.Lionel Bidwell08/11/2013

Delayed our start and headed east to drier weather as a very wet morning dried up to being just drizzly -ground sodden. W. Darren from west picking up ATV tracks- carried on to SW top. A long good gentle angled run sploshing across sodden pastures all the way back down to road.Chris Pearson14/04/2013

W Jenx, parked on road at Blackhopebyre - farmer OK. Up muddy track on Glentress rig and then VERY wet/marshy ground to Wallet Knowe, a drag. Better on top, trig seems highest but other bumps nearby recce'd. Reverse route back.nordicstar30/10/2011

From cottage at Glentress, parking just to N. Ascent quite boggy in places. Summit of this hill appears to be about 50m from trig. Then returned via Bareback Knowe, much better underfoot.Aye Jimmy17/05/2011
Parked at the 'piper's grave and climbed steeply up to Eastside Heights. Followed broad ridge around to Windlestraw over interminable tussocks, bog and peat hags for a couple of miles.derekblackburn02/04/2011

Dry clear day from Glentress Rig on track or path or vehicle tracks for most of way. Met 2 lads from the local estate who were very friendly.Dugswell206/06/2009
Walked up from Glentress next to the FBM over Wallet Knowe. Descended via Bareback Knowe. 4X4 driving GOML from local estate told me I shouldn't have parked on the verge of the highway.andy30/05/2009
Windlestraw Law is the highest in the moorfoot hills and was reached by a pleasant cycle on a cracking sunny day following the NCN on quiet country roads then the scenic B 709 cutting through the moorfoot hills. The bike was chained up at a fence near Blakev_russ02/05/2009
Climbed with J from/to Blackhopebyre up track on Glentress Rig; summit trig pillar near fence junction. Weather was a little misty but mainly dry. Travelling home from weekend at Melrose. Second and third visits, 12/09/2015, were made when walking out and back to/from Donald Top Bareback Knowe, using the same ascent and descent routes, P S of Blackhopebyre; weather was atrocious - blowing a hooley, heavy rain and thick mist, visibility on top ca.100mtr - wonder why I ventured out of the car ?trienbrae27/10/2008
