parked Ramseycleuch marshes cp. followed forest trcks, lots of windfall in firebreak at NT290464, better to stay on forest road to Gatecleuch Sike. also descended south side of White Syke.BLACKHILL09/09/2023
Large car park to west of hill. Over bridge then meandering forest road. Firebreaks to summit are blocked higher up by fallen trees so walked in forest a lot of the way. Plenty of flies and horrible tussock grass contributed to the fun. Not the nicest hill to complete Marilyn Section 28! Solo.Dangerous Dave04/07/2023
Walked in on the winding track from Ettrick Marshes parking area NT298163. The ground either side of the track is extensively forested (unmapped!) and it runs out in the midst of a planted area. Best to leave the track before then and head uphill through a wide firebreak on either side of a small burn at approx NT 298141 to the boundary wall/fence which can then be easily followed to the summit.ColinW29/03/2023
Parked at road end at Buccleuch. Asked farmer if my car was / not blocking entrance. Nombig lorries expected , so OK . Forest tracks past big house, faulds cottage and turn RIGHT at next junction. Hazel Rig has ben felled, as has forestry below ( north ) of track . Look at the most eastern ridge of Law Kneis…..i went up via a vague non felled area. Not such good choice. Took me 40 mins to het to summit. Opted tofollow the old fence on way down, initially on southern side and then onto northerm side. This left an even more awful plod of maybe 200 metre through clearfell, and then onto track. Another hill i will never go back up.VerySlowPlodder06/09/2022
From Hopehouse CP with Bob and Brian. Low cloud to summit then clear. Heading to Ward Law for a round trip of 20kPlay2End01/05/2022

From Ettrick Marshes car park (NT 2799 1309). Good logging road until it crosses Gamescleuch Burn then veered off to follow mapped and unmapped breaks to Gamescluch Hill. From there a good unmapped break leads out to edge of forest (at NT 2955 1385) which was followed up to here. On to Mountcommon Hill hill for a short 7km round.jonglew06/10/2021
Car park to W. at NT 2799 1309 - An easy 3.5km walk up forest track to the firebreak, 40m SE of Gatecleuch Sike at 288128 - Up decent firebreak, free of fallen trees, & then about 400m over rough ground to the unmarked summit which lies close to a self-seeded conifer growing on the fence line. As thoroughly unpleasant as I suspected it would be. Very few views - other than from the track on the way up - unpleasant forest, awful terrain. Add in flies, clegs and midgies and it tipped this into the worst hill I've done in years. One thing's for damned sure, I wont be wasting my time on repeating this, ever. Day redeemed by Ward Law afterwards.Belfarm 27/06/2021
After reading all the moaning and groaning from the West thought I'd try this from the East. Although slightly longer think it's the best plan. Parked at the top of the track at the signpost to Buccleugh (plenty space for a couple of cars at least without blocking the entrance). Followed the track past houses and up to a junction at around 318142. Basically here you can go either way around the 404m summit. I went anticlockwise (lots of felling going on so quite a pleasant open track), continued along until a gap between the forests where a track at around 301135 was marked on my old OS map. Thought from the current map I was going to need to negotiate a few hundred metres through the wood but when I got there there was a definite route between the still existing forest to the right and the felled forest leading directly to Law Kneis. Went across this clearing to a derelict gate, go over the derelict gate and then followed the fence all the way up to the corner and across to where it JulieB31/05/2021
From usual car park up forestry track. Took left then right at hairpin slightly downhill to bridge then turned on to small bulldozed track about 200 yards on. This leads to an old hard cored forestry track (firebreak on map) that goes all the way to the fence under Gamescluech Hill (a branch goes to within about 100m of the this summit - done on return). From there a poor atv track takes you almost to the summit - no tree bashing.SS06/12/2020
Solo trip in dreich weather. I went up the forest road and the White Sike firebreaks, and with the summer vegetation found it toilsome. Has anyone tried starting at Buccleuch and making the final approach from the south (forest road end at NT294126?)Invicta1417/07/2020
From W side, up by burn through felled area, S along track, up firebreak. V windy on top and forestry grim. Return much better through open, felled area to N. No rain. On to Cacra. Rounsfell14/03/2020
Route as Clive G. The second fire break has the remains of a fence. This is my 1556th Marilyn: just Tinto to do for a Grand Compleation of Marilyns and SMC lists.PGCE27/02/2020
After all the bad reports about this hill, I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was. From Tima car park as for others, took the little path just before the first gate, walking up through the trees on a very wide ride till I reached the upper track. Then straight over and up right ride and into the trees to the top. Difficult to keep on track but came out 300m from top. Easy walking in the trees and only took 1hour and 5 mins up and downSimon Winton06/02/2020
Mountcommon Hill, Law Kneis and Gamescleuch Hill from the Tima bridge. Up forest track until turns right, around Gatecleuch Hill until due west of Mountcommon Hill. Went direct through forest but there is a fire break a little further on if you are more patient than me. The summit was open and allows a direct down and up over rough but open ground to Law Kneis. Keeping the trees to your left it is then relatively straightforward to walk to Gamescleuch Hill - a narrow path through the long grass and brashings helps enormously. Just south east of the summit is an over-growing track that eventually leads back to the main forest road network.summitter15/08/2019
With the bracken not yet an impediment, the going up the side of White Sike fell wasn't bad. Upper track then followed to just beyond Gatecleuch Sike, from where old fenceline was followed up break to summit, as described by others. Route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.com/2019/05/tuesday-30-april-turner-cleuch-law-wiss.htmlGayle30/04/2019
From 279130 car park. Footbridge then north. Went up the side of White Sike to track at 285133. Very difficult ground. NOT RECOMMENDED. When I came down after my SOTA ham radio operation from the summit it was dark and descending that way wouild have been dangerous so I took the long route back via Hay Hill / Gamescleuch Wood via 286143, no problems in the dark.G4OBK (Phil)02/01/2019
From forest parking. Over vehicle bridge, up through forest 20 m before first gate. Along to burn 40m past and up beside old boundary. Strong wind and rain. With PM.CJM09/10/2018
Tima car park. 20 metres before the gate a track takes you into the edge of the forest and easily up as a shortcut onto the access road. As others 40m after the burn on the bend follow the wooden posts through the forest onto the open moor and then to the summit. Under 2 hour return with CM.bolton09/10/2018
Law Knasty. N. Morters' route up the White Sike firebreak, gruesome now that light is encouraging vegetables to grow and conceal the brash. Dim wench missed the FB up Gatecleuch Sike and ended up bagging Mountcommon Hill from approx. 286122 when mistake realised; up steeply, easy going through old trees. FB to summit, then down to 426 col and up to Law Knasty, which is a horrid tussock fest. Followed the wall down NW to the new track. Now absolutely horrible, not recommended. FB gone under dead fall, so you're pushed onto steep brash in the felled area. When back in the trees, FB also blocked with lots of dead fall. A relief to get on the track.Gill27/05/2018
From Forest car park, followed Nigel's route which took longer than anticipated ! Not a Knice Hill !NormanW31/03/2018
Third time on this hill, only because I failed to gather in the neighbouring Tumps on earlier visits. The approach from Mountcommon Hill was ridden with mossy tussocksColin Crawford18/10/2017
As Nigel Morters, footbridge now has a companion road bridge. High cloud, mild and good views for part of the compass.iangalbraith08/10/2017
From Gamescleuch Hill, descended to the col. This was hard work as the slopes were full of cut and fallen trees left over from when the forest was cut. This continued much of the way up Law Kneis. Walk continued to Mountcommon Hill. With JT.Sprog24/06/2017
Law Kneis, Gaamescleuch Hill & Mountcommon Hill from Tima Water CP. Like Owen I went up 50m too early, but quickly realised and drifted to the right up the slope through the trees to the firebreak easily enough.agentmancuso22/04/2017
Parked at Tima parking area. Over the footbridge, 100 metres or so south along the path, then up through the forestry to the track, turned right along the track, was intending to head north east up the fence line but mistakenly went up Gatecleuch Sike (not having a map as it was wet and I saw no point in taking my ancient 1:50,000). Realising I was too far north west, where the gradient eased I headed east following my nose through mercifully not too thick undergrowth, and emerged about 100 metres short of the summit. Descended down the fence line to the forestry track and then retraced my steps.Owen B16/04/2017
2nd Ettrick hill of the day...from Tima car park to the west. Over the footbridge head north 200m. Recent felling opened up firebreak head up to cut out the long loop. Track southwards until the river/ravine from summit. 40m beyond head up following old fenceposts/firebreak to open hill at the corner and onto tussocks summit area. Damp day, uninspiring hillN.Morters18/02/2017
From car park to west, up good track then followed old wall through forest and scrub.rhalstead31/12/2016
Parked at Tima car park (GR 280131) and used the purple route Tima loop waymarked route south for 200m. Then up steep fire-break to track at 283130. Followed track south and east to 288128 and then another steep fire-break (beautifully filled with primroses) to forest edge, then along edge to summit. Misty and boggy on top. Surprisingly enjoyable for a forest bashing exercise.Clive G07/05/2016
Parked opposite convenient FB at NT 27779 13781. Possible better start point in car park south of Angecroft Cottages. High point seems to be adjacent to a juvenile pine SE of trees on forest boundary fence.mntainman03/12/2015
Climbed with Smudge after using the car park below Deephope then across new footbridge. Then take the upper waymarked path heading S & after a while headed straight up through the trees to hit the forest road which was followed E until it crosses the sike. Just beyond a narrow & vegetatious fire break (occasional fence remains) takes a direct line for the summit.Dugswell202/10/2015
From Dugswell2mobile in car park to W. After crossing the burn we took the upper waymarked path heading S & after a while headed straight up through the trees to hit the forest road which was followed E until it crosses the sike. Just beyond a narrow & vegetatious fire break (occasional fence remains) takes a direct line for the summit.Smudge02/10/2015

from car park at the bridge along track for 400m then up edge of woods to middle track, south for 800m to bend in track and up firebreak 50m past gully/bend.robertphillips21/02/2015
Parked Hopehouse. Started OK with track past Annelshope Farm. However, should have taken a left and gone up the longer way because my track soon disappeared and I was left with a tortuous never-ending thrash through tussocky mixed vegetation and then new plantings up to the summit. Easily one of my top 5 worst MarilynsAndrewFinnimore02/09/2014
Directly up from Deephope footbridge, first on path, then on firebreak, to reach top track at around 400m. S on this to 288127 where the middle firebreak, of three, leads to the summit.Chris Peart25/03/2014
from footbridge 100m S of Deephope and up the obvious forest rds near the Gamescleuch burn. There is a good forest rd through the recently felled timber about 300m after the burn crossing at 286140, up through the cleared forest to the boundary, and then right on to the tiny cairnThearlaichdubh13/10/2013
Parked at NT 280131 and cycled up the forest tracks to NT 288127 then bashed up ride to vague summit.GmacT07/08/2013
Started from due west at 280132 and headed over a new bridge and up a steep and uncomfortable firebreak to upper track. Continued along track to the bend at 289127 from where another easier firebreak leads directly to the summit. Returned to 289127 then tried unsuccessfully to find a better way down through mature forest. Deephope may have been a better starting point.Topographer5705/01/2013
AFter Ettrick pen run. Up new forestry tracks and then hack through trees with GPS to summitnordicstar17/07/2011
Ascent from west side on very wet day. Followed forest road and firebreaks to and from summit.Man of Kernow118/06/2011
From bend in road to SW. Looked as though it might be a struggle and it was. Followed the line of the gully, then overgrown and boggy rides. Tussocky approach alongside a fence to young isolated spruce a few metres from the summit.Aye Jimmy07/06/2008

Deephope dodging - helped by the new bridge over the Tima Water. Still a nervy ascent. Using steep rides or just walked through the trees. Was undetected.fasgadh08/11/2002
New car park by Jubilee footbridge. Over bridge on raised duckboards over swamp and north to where a stream comes down through forest. Real challenge - ex-commandoes would have happy memories. No path, mostly 6' high ferns. Fallen trees hidden from view made each step an adventure. Willows were gradually blocking route half way up. A deep gully and final thrust to forest track. On forest road to metal barrier and upward ride to top of forest. Very nasty spongy deep grass, tussock and sedge to top at 13.05. This avoids the lunatic at Deephope.arranc22/09/2002
Took two goes. Follow the burn that turns you on to, namesake, Gatecleugh Hill then Law Kneis.Eddie29/03/2002
