Tucked car onto some tarmac opp entrance to Cliftoncote Farm in Bowmont Valley. Plenty of No Parking signs on the ‘farm’ side. Tarmac track to farmhouse and environs. Gate to open after sheep pens. Another gate to open after nice grassy area. Followed track through what might be a high bracken area to bealach. Animal tracks onto steep sides of Howman Law. Lovely shaped hill. Must have been a v significant location aeons ago. Nice chat with farmer etc on way down. The bealach wall and gate must be the boundary between two landowners tennants.VerySlowPlodder27/10/2023
Ascent from Elliesheugh (Bowmont Valley) via tracks & gates avoiding bracken to Kersmoor Head col then ridge to summit. Fine, dry & breezy with sunny intervals.Vin17/09/2023
Solo. From the start of the track to what had been Elliesheugh. Up track and across fields, dropping down to Cote Burn. Followed track to col between Elisheugh Hill and Hownam Law. Through gate in wall. There's a well defined path a little to the west that makes it easy to get through bracken. Higher up faint tracks. A beautiful sunny day.pwbellarby02/09/2023
Walk from Morebattle taking St Cuthbert's Way to Grubbit Law, before following the ridge via Cushat End, then down to Hownam Grange. An enjoyable walk on good tracks.milimana11/08/2023
From Elliesheugh. Across fields using gates and fence crossing points to reach pens by Cote Burn, thence marked track to col. Through gate in wall, then faint tracks steeply up to summit. Grand views.vuirich26/02/2023
The mist cleared and it brightened up considerably after a very unpromising start to the day.Alex C25/01/2023
Solo on a superb clear morning. From Elliesheugh, easy through fields, joined track and followed to col south of hill, through gate and up open hillside to top. Descended north, gates, then sheep trods curving across head of the valley to return same way through fields.Nick Canute17/09/2022
Made a point-to-point of it: from Primsidehill to Hownam. We found enough space to leave a car where the StC way leaves the Cocklawfoot road and went over Wideopen Hill; gates or stiles where needed all the way. A very fine approach with the ridge up to Wideopen Hill particularly fine. Then via Cushat Law. Once over the highest stile (NT 7979 2220), there were lots of little trods but none more obviously worn to the summit. On the way back down, we found the best remains of the hill fort- we'd skirted them on the way up. This was my companion- Pete's- 2nd visit to this summit but he was persuaded by all the other Tumps that could be visited on our walk- on to Place Hill and Windy Law, then down to Hownam.pwheeler13/09/2022
2 of 4: As Dangerous Dave. NB After we started we came to a sign at the first field: Lambing; Keep out till end of May. The lambs had not been born yet and we had no dog so we continued. Also our presence had been acknowledged by a wave from a farm worker on a Quad Bike. With Karen.ChrisR18/04/2022
Good parking area at start of Elliesheugh track. Good access through gates and crossing points between sheep fields to reach the open hillside. Once on the ridge there is a gate to avoid the barbed wire fence and a final wooden gate in the stone wall to reach the summit area. A really lovely hill with great views. I was surprised how accessible this hill was and must thank the landowner. Solo.Dangerous Dave18/01/2022
Used the Elliesheugh track. Crossed fields, finding crossing points OK and took marked path to gate at col. Followed paths above wall to top. Same route back to col but followed path down to track junction and then path just above fence back to Elliesheughm0jla05/09/2021

From Howgate. Parked just east of the bridge. Followed track past farm buildings and down to a ford. A number of ATV tracks heading uphill via several gates. Sunny and warm, so great views from the top (Just under an hour) Enjoyable.Roblex01/09/2020
From Elishaugh, up track and through gates. Easy access to hill from the north. Descended steeply south. Through gate at col and rejoined outward route. KeithByTheC13/07/2020
Parked in space opposite end of track at Elishaugh, followed track around that leads through gates and across a burn, picked up main path at 805222, followed up to col, crossed wall at gate and followed sheep tracks up ridge to summit. Descended with along ridge and down over Cushat End, picked up main path and followed around to meet outgoing path just before burn. Returned via outward route. A pleasant 7.5km circuit.JulieB27/12/2019
As others from Elisheugh road end up track, across fields then up track to wall then up grassy slope to summit - unfortunately just shrouded in mist.SS22/12/2019
Solo jog from the east. Somewhat unhelpful landowner- apparently best to avoid the hill in spring!amswanston28/04/2019
From Howgate. OK but could not avoid walking among interested and vocal cattle. Great hill.clivevilla07/11/2018
Parked nt814219, Pleasant walk gates at all the walls.G0HIO18/05/2018
From the East round Elishaugh Hill then various walls and fences to summit. Very windy. My final Region 28 Marilyn.NormanW25/04/2018
From Elliesheugh. On the way up veered SW to near the NW corner of the plantation, but this involved a lot of fences and walls, not recommended. Followed the more orthodox route on the return, as per the path marked on the 1:25,000 from the col.Owen B31/03/2018

Similar route taken to Gill up to Cote Burn then headed straight up (west) along heather and grass boundary 10m along track heading south. Headed for gate at base of for but on wrong wall at junction so carefully cRosset wall and headed up steeping bank to summit. Returned more or less directly to vehicle on an ENE bearing. Parked at Ellisheugh (NT81437 21942)mntainman16/10/2017
With Steve Smith. Roadside parking on minor road to E. Farm track initially then across the rough.jonglew16/10/2017
A fine walk from Elliesheugh, up the track, over fields and down to join another track along Cote Burn. An ATV track heads up what looks like a bog but isn't, and then joins sheep tracks following the wall up the hill. Over a wooden gate, along the wall and then through a nice gate to the top. Great views and easy going all the way.Gill05/10/2017
1/4 From Howgate parking at the group of houses. Track up hillside then follow wall/fences unhooking electric to pass onto summit via Braemoor Knowe, Grange Hill. Reurn same route. Fine view of CheviotN.Morters01/07/2017
Drove car through ford at NT780235 - there is parking on the other side for a couple of cars without causing obstruction. Ascended St Cuthbert's Way around Grubbit Law. Followed paths alongside stone wall to Cushat End and then onwards to summit. Views superb, but couldn't stay long due to very strong winds. Retuned via Grange Hill to Hownam Grange and along field edges on east side of river to return to starting point.raffemeister26/12/2016
Up to summit from Cliftoncote and back along ridge to Cushat End. Good walking surface all the way.AndrewFinnimore13/07/2016
Route as bolton. Hot, overcast, calm, rain on return, good views.iangalbraith24/06/2016
From Morebattle using St Cuthbert's Way [taking in Wideopen Hill] and down to Hownam Grange through various fields and gates.russell6113/03/2016
#562 Followed GB's excellent route description, love that cattle grid bridge! Parking area full of dumped stone but still room for one.tim74709/03/2016
With GB from 815219. A 90 minute walk of just over 3 miles.bolton10/12/2015
Parked opposite the start of the Elliesheugh track at NT81437 21950 (Room for 3 or 4 cars) – Up track to gate & then SSW up field to gateway/grid at NT80940 21700 – Headed west over 3 more gates to gate in wall on col at NT80251 21700 – Up grassy slopes to summit. (PM)gerrybowes10/12/2015

Parked in the large lay by opposite the Elliesheugh track and followed the tracks and path marked on the map. The path petered out but a gate gave access to the open hill, so there is no need to climb the last wall. This is a great hill that deserves a good weather day to enjoy the view.Sprog12/08/2014
from 815219. Fine viewpoint over lovely rolling hillsThearlaichdubh04/07/2014
From Elliesheugh track end. Operated ham radio for summits on the air (SOTA). Use gate at NT 80940 21760 to save climbing the fence and from there other gates can be seen along your intended route.G4OBK (Phil)26/02/2014
One of 3 SOTA activations on this day with Phil GM4OBK & Terry GM0VWP. Had to use 7-ssb to qualify.G4OOE26/02/2014
This is why it's worth doing the Marilyns. An esoteric hill that's well off the beaten track. You wouldn't ever go there if it wasn't in the list, but when you go it proves to be an absolute joy. It has an un trampled top, a pleasant grassy ascent, a sprinkling of scree to give a hint of wildness and magnificent 360 degree views that seem to look back in time over the borders and Cheviots. I recommend you do it on a sunny day, with a picknic and friends and savour the experience. I will definately be back to the borders.mindlessflogger04/08/2013
W Jenx from, as others 815219, lots of parking off road near finger post, which leads up track to fellside. Bitter cold late March day, desperate cold wind, spindrift/ice particles. Just a few sheep at beginning, drifts burying electric fences :-). Took track as far as burn then cut up hill over wall (nr buried) to high col and top. Didn't hang around, trig and high point and back same way. Bring on Spring!nordicstar23/03/2013
2nd/5 for day around the Cheviot. Started at 815219, No obvious route to the top but no serious obstructions. A well built stone wall at about 350m blocks the direct route to the summit, but two gates through this wall about 1km apart can both be included to give a good circular walk.Topographer5727/02/2013
Mindlessflogger put it perfectly. A gem of a hill. Did from a holiday cottage in Hownam, with the Steeple on the return. Bliss.Jake99412/08/2012
Parked at path end at 815219 (16:30) and walked up path then through fields (avoiding bulls) almost to col, then up E side of hill to top. Very pleasant rounded grassy hill, typical of Southern Uplands. Finish 17:50. Clouds threatening but clear on topdbb10/08/2011

Access from east at NT81525 21909, track to fields then open hillside. Super hill on bright and breazy morning.Dugswell227/03/2010
A circuitous walk from Belford. Had to backtrack the way we came as there were some very frisky cattle in the field we needed to cross on the way back and as an ex farmer even I didn't fancy it, so Mrs Dan won in the end. Great walk otherwise.Walker Dan08/08/2009
Parked at entrance to Hownam Grange and up over Grange Hill. Very pleasant, other than finding a scribbled note stuck to the windscreen saying 'This is not a parking place'.agentmancuso02/07/2009
From E, start of track signpost 'Ellesheugh 1/4 mile'. Followed this then fields until track picked up again. Then steeper slopes to trig on top. Pastoral views.Aye Jimmy13/06/2009

Parked at cattle Grid at (I believe) NT814219. A few electric fences ment a few detours as I headed directly westward to the top. Quite a few "wild" animals and horses around ;-)Jhimmy07/08/2005
