Sunset, star gazing walk from Blaenau Ffestiniog with Kelly. | paulh79 | 24/11/2023 |
Ascent from Blaenau Ffestiniog via North Top, descent via Manod Bach. Dry, clear with good visibility. Paths generally good, though interesting by the Manod Mawr quarry. Many paths not oft trod! | Cumbriancyclist | 13/09/2023 |
12.65 miles 2937ft walk ,start at A470 Blaenau Ffestiniog layby to Moel Farwyd, Moel Penamnen, Foel Fras and Manod Mawr. | stephenbuda | 05/07/2023 |
Walked up from Blaenau, bit exciting using the quarry track to get to the top to the next one. The walk over to Penamnen is quiet boggy, but the old slate buildings are impressive. I didn't trust the footpath back down to BF would avoid the active quarry below so got a little lost on the tracks going down, but used arial view to find my way down. | andrewroberts | 26/06/2023 |

From Blaenau Ffestiniog station on the way to Manod Bach. | derrymark | 19/11/2022 |
Followed Nuttalls route 5.4 over Moel Penamnen, then Foel Fras to North top. From the North top follow the fence down steeply until it reaches the point at which it is below the steep slate. Contour around to the quarry road, then turn right past a little pond to the public right of way (there is a yellow arrow pointing the direction after walking along a short bit of road). Follow this up nearly to its highest point where a path leads off to the left up to the summit of Manod Mawr. Descend North (a path on the ground leads that way past a couple of cairns back to the quarry road). Turn left down the road and follow to the end where a disused level leads down to 2 small lakes. At the end turn right and then left by a wall down another disused level. Through a couple of gates and then choose a route either by footpaths or lanes back to the car park. 9.2 miles 2,380ft climbing for full circuit. | JulieB | 03/10/2022 |
Quite difficult coming from Manod Mawr North Top with the quarry, had to go South East and use a section of the quarry road to get to where I wanted to go. | Buckleymon | 05/09/2022 |
7.5 mile walk from Bethania, Blaenau Ffestiniog. Up old quarry incline from town to old quarry ruins then following a path to Llyn Y Manod. We followed the odd sheep track up to Manod Bach. No proper path. Descended same way, then walked along path by lake and onto track diagonally up the side of Manod Mawr eventually heading across to summit. The quarry was unsurprisingly very active (it was a Monday)so we headed back down to the lake then incline following a path past Llyn Du Bach and climbing steeply on not bad terrain to Manod Mawr North Top. This involves a lot of descent/ascent but it completely avoids the working quarry. We retraced our steps back to town. 880m ascent in sunny conditions. Great views all around. Afterwards we drove to Foel Offrwm and the Precipice walk. | DanTrig | 25/04/2022 |
Main reason for coming out here today was to visit the Huws top Tomen y Mur, but this a hill I've been meaning to revisit for several years so it was very enjoyable to take another wander up this way. | Twice Shy | 26/03/2022 |

From Bethania, a round of Manod Mawr, Manod Mawr North top and Moel Penamnen. All straightforward, was told by truck driver I should not be on the quarry track approaching last top but he was OK about it. Need to follow it for about 500 metres really to get to decent ground for ascent. Descent down steeply to south and on to quarry tracks to LLechwed quarry and the road. | dickscroop | 11/01/2022 |

Moel Penamnen, Manod Mawr North Top, Manod Mawr. V diff in fog, navigating through the quarry. Follow the obvious quarry roads at the beginning, rhododendrons are impossible | Chris Williams | 03/09/2021 |

great views. be careful of the quarry | Aristotle Chip | 12/01/2018 |
A great walk from Cae Clyd car park. At Bron Manod, I eschewed the footpath in favour of the track leading up and over a bridge to some stone sheds, then followed nice dry ATV tracks across the fields, hopping over gates and then a last openable gate out onto the open hill. Up alongside a BWF, which I climbed on the way up, but there's a gate closer to Llyn y Manod, and a dry track linking to the nice track slanting up the hillside. Up a nice wide ridge onto the summit plateau, and an easy stroll thereafter to the top. Nice soft snow to make the climb most enjoyable. Good views. | Gill | 26/11/2017 |
From north top descending to quarry road and then east to disused tip and sw to summit. Too much activity in the quarry to risk a short cut. | jrj | 26/09/2017 |
THERE IS NO PARKING BEYOND THE BIG CAR PARK AT CAE CLYD, so park here, and avoid a twenty bzillion point turn near the end of the track. Public FPs to Llyn y Manod, then lovely diagonal track up and round hill to quarry due N of summit. S, steep at first then easier to summit. Low cloud so saw nothing. Onward to the north top. | Minto | 11/06/2017 |
With CH, KF, MH, in thick mist. Easy to park where the inclines come down in Bethania. Followed the fascinating inclines up to Graig-ddu Quarry, then things got interesting. Tried to find the track that emerges from the SW edge of the quarry, but the track we were on swung right round to a bulldozed junction near Llyn Pysgod. Eventually a phone GPS saved the day giving us a relatively straightforward bearing to the summit. Then tried to come straight down the W slope to the lake path. Not recommended - steep, rocky, laborious! | Mark Jackson | 30/05/2017 |

From car park at Cae Clyd. RoWs to about 200m S of Llyn y Manod, before cutting E to well camouflaged sheep fold. Straight up hill from there, roughly following line of quartz. Route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2016/08/manod-fawr-and-moel-siabod.html | Gayle | 15/08/2016 |
I parked at the quarry car park and used the footpath that starts behind the nearest machine shed on the right. Easy 4 pointer for SOTA | M0YDH | 27/05/2016 |

Continuation of walk from Manod Bach. Descended steeply to Llyn y Manod, then very abruptly up west face of Manod Mawr, making use of a wide gully, and so onto plateau. Visited summit and trig point. Walk continued to the north top. With DM. | Man of Kernow1 | 14/02/2016 |
Quickly up and down from bethania in wet and misty weather. | jenx | 14/11/2015 |
With Jenx from Bethania using lane to GR708456. Room for a car or two. Used old miners path up the the Level and used this to gain old workings area at 410m. Then direct line up ridge in a compass bearing through the clag to summit. Back inside two hours. | nordicstar | 14/11/2015 |

Great walk up to this one from Cwm Penmachno 12 miles in total all weathers including horizontal hail at the summint. Amazing view, loved it. Remains only but still great hill. Images to follow. | griefmiester | 14/11/2013 |
Clockwise circular round from Blaenau Ffestiniog. Garreg Ddu - Moel Farlwyd - Moel Penamnen - Foel Fras - Manod Mawr North Top - Manod Mawr - Manod Bach. The extremely large building in Maen-offeren Quarries is well worth a peek inside. It's like an industrial museum. The descent off Manod Mawr to the northern tip of Llyn y Manod is fairly ghastly! | David Gradwell | 11/08/2013 |
SO MUCH FINE WEATHER AT BALA THAT HAD TIME TO DO ONE OF THE LLANRWST BASED WALKS, NUTTALLS WALK 5.4. DROVE TO BLAENAU FFESTINIOG AND WALKED UP THROUGH QUARRY. JOYCE TURNED BACK AT THE TOP AS MOORLAND CROSSING LOOKED PATHLESS AND BORING - WHICH IT WAS. EASY ASCENT OF MOEL PENAMNEN, THEN LONG AND BOGGY CROSSING TO MANOD MAWR N. TOP AND ROUND QUARRY TO MANOD MAWR. COULD'T FIND ROUTE OFF INCLINE SO HAD LONG WALK BACK THROUGH VILLAGE. | BURGESS | 11/08/2013 |
As part of a circular walk of Moel Farlwyd, Moel Penamnen, Foel Fras. Manod Mawr North Top, Manod Mawr and Manod Bach. | JohnStoneham | 04/06/2013 |
A bold brute of a mountain. Quite a slog up from Bethania. Visited North Top first then plodded up here. Phenomenal views and the steep slopes accentuate the height. | Jake994 | 23/09/2012 |
Easy walk from North Top through slate quarry (ok round it) | clivevilla | 26/08/2012 |

Following Nuttall walk 5.4. A very interesting top, cairns everywhere, lovely views south the view north not so good as you see the poor old north top looking very sorry, easy walk down along the very long incline best to carry on down into Blaenau. | SteveClay | 26/02/2011 |
As Nuttall walk 5.4. Do it before its quarried away. After jumping over a gate on the descent to BF we were interviewed by a farmer who didn't understand the concept of open access. However after a chat it turned out that he has problems with people driving up on to the moors and supergluing his gate padlocks. After a discussion on the price of lambs we parted best mates. | mindlessflogger | 03/01/2011 |

In mist until coming off Moel Penamnen getting round in 4 hrs 35 min. Navigation was very strange and Google Earth revealed the extent to which the quarry has grown since the maps were surveyed. Good day - shame about the weather. Anti-clockwise circuit. | SS | 10/10/2010 |

estimated 1st ascent above, though month and year are probably correct. Walked from Cae Clyd, Manod, Blaenau Ffestiniog, to Llyn Manod and followed Allt y Ceffylau track rising W slope of Manod Mawr (E side of lake) to Graig-ddu quarry, then turn S and ascend to summit. Very rocky, volcanic summit plateau. Dramatic views of Moelwyns, Rhinogs, Snowdon and Crin Goch, Glyderau and Carneddau etc. Summit cairn and shelter, and 3 other cairns on W sub-plateau. Countless ascents since, as it is a local mountain, from Cwm Teigl to Llyn Manod, from Bwlch quarry, and up incline from Manod, Blarnau Ffestiniog. | Dewi Prysor | 09/09/2003 |
The route from the North Top circled round Graig-ddu Quarry, which still works and normally does so on Saturdays, but this was Easter. There was no path to the top of Manod Mawr but the route was easy enough, hindered only by a wind so strong I could barely stand, and I hurried away, down an incline and back into the town. | peter4lc | 19/04/2003 |

Followed road /track up toward Maen Offeren quarry then took RoW up old rail incline before passing to the West of Llyn Newydd to Ascend Moel Penamnen. Then followed broad grassy ridge to Foel-fras before heading South for a direct ascent of Manod Mawr N Top. WARNING !! From there had to head due East to avoid the quarry workings and a huge drop before taking a quarry track round the edge of the site to Manod Mawr summit. Returned through quarry levels and rail inclines to Bethania and a walk back up the main road. With Ron Oakley. | steve hudson | 16/02/2001 |

Dolwyddelan to Bleanau Ffestiniog over the hills. From Moel Penamnen and Foel Fras, over Manod Mawr N top. Please check if this walk still goes- MM N top was on the edge of a working quarry in 1998.
