This was a lovely walk. Climbing the western Arans from Cwm Cywarch gives a lovely approach. I climbed Gwaun y Llwyni, Waun Camddwr, Aran Fawddwy (a good view today, so I climbed it again), Gwaun Lydan and Pen yr Allt Uchaf. All finished off with a very steep drop on the northern grassy slope of Pen yr Allt Uchaf.oldbagger2720/06/2023
First summit of the day, parked up in the free car park in cwm cywarch, nice easy going hike until you turn right at the stlye 1.5 miles in, tough going up the grassy hill with the summit on the topBuckleymon09/02/2023

From Gwaun Lydan. Boggy walking in the mist, a tracked vehicle has made even more of a mess of the bog of Waun Goch. Descended north west to path. Met a couple of chaps who'd summited Aran Fawddwy and there had not been a cloud inversion so decision vindicated. 15km 5 hours.Wycombe Wanderer22/01/2022
A windy day with the odd snow flurry but pleasant enough. Via track running along NW flank and then straight up fence from the stile to fence corner on ridge then short if windy walk to top.dickscroop04/01/2022
Nuttall walk 8.1.Pen yr allt Uchaf. Gwaun Lydan. Aran Fawddwy. Erw y Ddafad-ddu. Aran Benllyn. Gwaun y Llwyni and finally Waun Camddwr. With Hiking Manchester. Glorious weather and great company.Lazylizzie24/07/2021

From SW, revisit for the 616m top, which is on John Gillham's list and possibly also a NuttallRHW11/06/2021
Nuttall's routes 8.1 and 8.3 combined plus a few extras - Pen-aran (at the end of the main ridge - a Bridge), Pen y Byn-fforchog North Top (a Bridge) and Y Gribin (a simm). 12 peaks - 29.93km - 5500 feet - took just under eleven hours (the GPS reckoned three hours were spent sitting on my backside!). Lovely sunny day until I got to Pen y Byn fforchog when the cloud descended and it began drizzling. Route through the forest was horrible.Herbert Anchovy31/07/2020
From national Park car park SH880298 (further up valley than my edition of Nuttall book suggests), on via Gwaun Lydan, Drysgol, Gwaun Y Llwyni, Waun Camddwr, Glasgwm and Pen Y Bryn Fforchog. A great horseshoe round the edge of the Cwm rather than following Nuttall route in order to 'save' Arran Fawddwy as my last 2,000 footer the following day.Neil Midgley30/07/2020
From Cwm Cywarch car park. Circuit of Y Gribin, Glasgwm, Waun Camddwr, Gwaun y Llwyni, Aran Fawddwy, Geaun Lydan and Pen y Allt Uchaf. Direct descent off NW of Pen y Allt Uchaf.welshyboyo17/07/2020
1/7. As per Nuttall book. Pen yr allt Uchaf. Gwaun Lydan. Aran Fawddwy. Erw y Ddafad-ddu. Aran Benllyn. Gwaun y Llwyni and finally Waun Camddwr the ex Nuttall. Great walk loved waterfalls on descent. Misty but mild.nickywood125/09/2019
A 18 mile walk with 5500ft of accent combining the Arran Ridge and Southern Arrans following nuttalls route.Pen y Allt Uchaf, Gwaun Lydan, Aran Fawddwy, Wrw y Ddafad-ddu, Aran Benllyn, Gwaun y Llwyni, Waun camddwr, Glasgwm and Pen y Bryn-fforchog.The woodland beneath the last top has been completely felled and so the return route Nuttall suggests is really difficult. Final top, diversion at the end of a round of Cym Cywarch, fine outing. Steep down hillside to regain path and track to the Park CP near the head of the lane.nordicstar12/07/2016
ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL DAY WITH GOOD VIEWS. FOLLOWED NUTTALLS WALK 8.1 UP THE STEEP GRASS ONTO PEN Y ALLT UCHAF, THEN EASILY OVER GWAUN LYDAN. A STIFF CLIMB ONTO ARAN FAWDDWY, THEN EASY RIDGE WALKING TO ERW Y DDAFAD DDU AND ARAN BENLLYN WITH GOOD VIEWS OVER BALA, RHINOGS AND ARENIGS. RETURNED AVOIDING SUMMITS TO DESCEND STEEPLY AND THEN OVER ROUGH GROUND TO GWAUN Y LLWYNI AND EASILY TO WAUN CAMDDWR. DECIDED TO TAG ON WALK 8.3 TO AVOID RE-ASCENT AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FINE WEATHER AND LONG JUNE DAYLIGHT. A VERY HARD CLIMB ONTO GLASGWM, THEN EASY RIDGE TO FINISH ON PEN Y BRYN FFORCHOG. HOWEVER, THE FOREST HAS BEEN FELLED AND IT WAS VERY TOUGH GOING TRYING TO FOLLOW THE PREVIOUS RIDES UNTIL THE EASY DESCENT OF THE ZIGZAG - 10.5 HOURS WALKING.BURGESS15/06/2015

Circuit from Cywarch,6 tops in total.Emlyno16/08/2013
First time I've had to abort a walk because of the heat! And in Wales too!! Had hoped to do the full Nuttall walk taking in the ridge. But with no shade, no breeze and no phone signal, after dragging myself up Pen Yr Allt Uchaf, I decided to just take in one more (Gwaun Lydan), and retreat down Hengwm to a welcome drink at Dinas Mawddwy. The ridge awaits another visit.ruthatlast12/07/2013
Cloudy day saw me follow an anti-clockwise loop. Skipping Aran Fawddwy in the end as the wind was up and I couldn't see anything. Four more bagged so six to go.SS04/05/2013

Climber from Cwm Cywarch, I climbed to the col with Drysgol and backtracked to the summit. Bitter wind with a few patches of hard snow on the summit. This was marked by a an old fence post and about 2 stones.isabelle31/01/2009
Our last peak of the day. A bit of a drag as the mist came back, we headed to Waun Goch then onto Pen yr Allt Uchaf, luckily the summit was this side of the hill marked by a couple of old fence post and a few bits of white rock. We could see down into theSteveClay04/08/2008

A steep exhausting ascent up the grassy flank described in the Nutall book on a hot dayFather Ted18/06/2006
A brilliantly sun-drenched day, showing the Arans in their splendour. The sheltered valleys with steep slopes plunging headlong to quiet brooks produce perhaps the lushest green in all of Wales. Starting at Cwm Cywarch, I followed the sunken lane through trees until it rose and opened out, the climbing hut appearing below on the left. Cattle grazed on the other side of the Afon yr Hengwm. The retrospect of Craig Cywarch, a haunt for climbers, was breathtaking. At the 400-metre mark, there was a stile where I stopped for a while, ate lunch and drank in the perfect stillness of an autumn afternoon. From here the path continued onwards towards the highest peaks of the range, but my way was right, following a fence up the side of Pen yr Allt Uchaf which steeply led to the summit.peter4lc05/10/2005

Start ~ 853184, Cwm Cywarch. Took the good path through Blaencywarch and up the side of Hengwm. Near the top of the path we turned SE up a fence line to the summit of Pen yr Allt Uchaf. Then made our way NE to the summit of Gwaun Lydan before heading W over Drysgol and Drws Bach to follow the rim of Hengwm south to Gwaun a Llwyni. After an ascent through Camddwr and going onto the Arans, we signed the book on Drosgl, bagged Gwaun Llydan (Pete was Nuttal bagging!) then resumed a splendid walk by going over this summit on a well-defined grassy ridge which narrowed delightfully as we descended it SW. Excellent mountain walk.pwheeler16/07/1995
