Walked from Llanyre, tricky and muddy up through field once off paths. Would recommend forestry route. | Hippy77 | 12/02/2024 |
Parked on the road to the north by Bryn-canol. The public footpath no-longer exists. Followed forest road up zigzags to edge of forest then up by fence towards the mast. A busy area on the ridge with rubbish, masts, farm machinery and a beetroot field. No cairn. Barbed wire fence to cross to get to the Unclassified old summit. With Jill. Not my favourite Welsh Marilyn. | Dangerous Dave | 05/02/2024 |
Parked at Bryn Canol. Up through forest. | JGC | 13/01/2024 |
Parked in the layby at Bryn canol to the N. Decided on the forestry track option up - lower half is fine, the upper section is wet and overgrown and home to a large fly population. Some of the rubbish at the hp has evidently been burnt, leaving what looked like mattress/sofa springs. Descended to the E of the forest, roughly handrailing the boundary fence through chest high bracken, before picking up the forest track again lower down. Overcast and low cloud. With Gillian | richard69 | 08/08/2023 |
From north starting at Bryn Canol. Along good track, went past stile to go up good forestry track. Just past a large turning area a path goes uphill to a stile. From here the mast could be seen, but headed up FP to visit trig first. Back to mast and onto the rubbish tip which is almost at the top. Why dump rubbish on the very top which tends to spoil the good views this hill enjoys. On to west top and back same way. 1hr 50 mins there and back. Aided by no bracken this time o year. | PeterD | 14/02/2023 |
Parked at the end of the tarmac, space for 1 car. The via the PRoW ( no trace of any signs ) through Rhostono & then around in a big loop via the trig to the summit. Lots of old furniture in a pile, presumably awaiting Nov 5th. Fair views. | DanMaisieBex | 23/10/2022 |
Approached from N - Bryn Canol. Followed the well maintained track for 700m to the stile with a Right-of-way marked. This ROW is difficult to follow to say the least, so its recommended you continue 50 m further and follow the forestry roads, zig-zagging up until a stile is reached at SO175 640. The edge of the forest can then be followed upwards to cross a fence giving access via some bracken to the summit. I tried a direct descent through the forest. Not recommended unless you enjoy orienteering. | davechaffey | 05/09/2022 |
From Upper Cilgee-friendly farmer. Up mast track then walked over all high ground. | dave g | 27/07/2022 |
From North. Right of way paths in a terrible state - overgrown and no signs. Top was a rubbish tip of old sofa's and other rubbish! worst hill in Wales so far! | richwales | 07/07/2022 |
From the crossroads just to the North of Nant Glas | Stevooo | 17/06/2022 |
With KeithByTheC. 5 miles including visit to trig point. < 2hrs walking. | JulieB | 05/10/2021 |
From N. Stayed on forest track to 016639 then RoW. Leaving forest it was a bit brackeny until stile not far from trig point. Then along grassy ridge to summit. Descended N on poor forest track shown on 1:25000 map. Not recommended. | KeithByTheC | 05/10/2021 |
From Llanyre - 8.5 mile circular | woodse | 28/08/2021 |
with Evelyn. Parked in small quarry by side of road before turning left towards farm. Asked farmer for permission and he was happy to let us walk through the farm to the top. | jd16 | 12/08/2021 |
..Trig east of summit... No
.10332. blue sky fluffy cumulus but an icy wind has brewed in the last hour. | vegibagger | 13/10/2020 |
Parked before Upper Cilgee used track past farm with noisy trio of dogs (unrestrained) and one dog clearly the bad boy enclosed in a horse box. Quickly up to summit and back past the gauntlet of dogs, quieter on return as farmer shouting at them to be quiet. 3/3 Rhayader Marilyn | N.Morters | 29/09/2020 |
Parked before Upper Cilgee and was granted permission to walk up the mast road. Both tops, the mast and trig. | NormanW | 25/09/2020 |
park rd near bryn canol nr nantglas initially plantation track then frpm hairpin bit of trash bash then straight up pasture, then marilyn then tp return ROW NW then through plantation very active badger sett just off row 0200 6363 6.5ks | underhill | 15/03/2020 |
Horrible climb from Bryn Canol (NW) through forestry area. The right of way is too overgrown to use (you need a machete) so the forestry track is the best way up until about half way where it turned into ankle deep sloppy mud. Very difficult to climb up. Great views at the top so I would try an alternative route next time! | fantango | 12/01/2020 |
3/4: From Bryn-canol to NW. Followed old ROW path stubbornly thru felled forestry. Thick mist on top – only a gilmpse of TV mast. | Rounsfell | 27/12/2019 |
Rhiw Gwraidd from near Nant Glas. . Access poor due to forest and bracken. 7km with 300m ascent in 1h50m. | silveracorn_alan | 03/08/2019 |
With: hb; Parked at SO006653 and followed the track south to join the easy forest track by the gate at SO0106764463 which we followed through the forest to SO0160364014. Here we joined the rising footpath to the stile into the deeply bracken covered field. We didn't follow the marked path which disappears into the bracken but followed the path close to the fence which easily brings you out on the top. There were workers cleaning the TV mast.
We followed the indistinct path through the old quarry to the summit cairn then visited the west top before returning by the same route. | Ian Baines | 26/07/2019 |
With: ib; CP at SO006653. Track S to gate at SO010644 & followed track through forest to SO016640. Joined rising path to stile then close to fence to top. Visited summit & west top & returned same route. | Helen Baines | 26/07/2019 |
From N, easy parking at SO006653. Lower forest slopes well churned up by ongoing operations so followed first zigzag of forest road and picked up good fp at SO 01552 64006 to emerge on E side of wood. Straightforward from then on, Marilyn first then W top and return same way. | milimana | 06/01/2019 |
From road end SO005653. Along track then followed ROW then up fence on edge of forest to mast. cut round the old quarry to the summit as per the surveys. returned same route with Elizyanne | GmacT | 19/07/2018 |
Look carefully for the path up through the trees. Success brings you out onto the hill. | elizyanne | 19/07/2018 |
From north, 006053, through forest, up west side of trees, over tops and down east side. Hot, overcast and great views. | iangalbraith | 18/07/2018 |
Parked roadside at SO 016629 and walked up track through Upper Cilgee to TV station. Operated ham radio from summit for SOTA. | G4OBK (Phil) | 17/03/2018 |
Drove to Upper Cilgee, and asked permission to head up the hill and to park. Nice farmer, kindly agreed both, asked me to park by a gate on the track below the farm. Easy walk up the track, and good but murky views from the top. Bagged both tops just in case. | Gill | 13/01/2018 |
Little bit of snow on the ground, drove carefully up to the road to park. Saw a fox along the track leading up to this hill | nickywood1 | 30/11/2017 |
Parked at 006653 and followed the little used footpath hat crosses over the hill between the trig point and mast. Returned same way. Visited Western top to get the best view but still a poor hill. | mindlessflogger | 28/10/2017 |
With TJB. Parked at cattle grid and walked up road to Upper Cilgee Farm where we asked permission to use the track to the TV mast. Permission readily granted. Easy walk to top. Several men working on mast, some high up. | trimarc2 | 17/08/2017 |
From SO006653, made mistake of following path, don't continue to track. Once on track simple walk. | rhalstead | 29/05/2017 |
P by cattle grid at end of minor road to the south, then easy walk up via mast to summit. | Topographer57 | 07/04/2017 |
Parked on the minor road to the north where there is a layby just at the start of the track. Walked south along track and then took footpath SE up to the trig point before heading W along the ridge to the given coords Marilyn summit and then further W to the other summit. Backtracked towards the mast and bushwacked down through forest to eventually pick up the track again neat the bottom. | Father Ted | 06/03/2017 |
Parked at SO011626 and took a direct route cross country. A fair wind blowing at the top. visited the west summit too. | Herbert Anchovy | 21/02/2017 |
From Bryn-canol taking track through woods to row. Easy enough, with bracken dead, up past mast to summit. | SS | 28/01/2017 |
With Trefor. Obtained permission to follow the track to the aerial. On to summit then west summit which certainly looked higher and was shown as higher on my altimeter!! Prolonged heavy snow and hail shower. | mike.hoult | 29/04/2016 |
From south couldn't find footpath through Rhostono. Plenty of parking @ SO006653, followed forest track. Do NOT take 1st signed footpath along fence unless you have a MACHETE, continue to few metres to forest track marked as footpath which isn't on my 25k or 50k maps. Took footpath after couple hundred m throu wood & then followed line of trees diagonally across field, up step bank across track to footpath. Followed fence line when out of wood towards TV mast. Headed for what looked highest west of mast from where a small cairn was visible. On way back took forest track so I didn't have to be lifted over stiles on shortcut. Humans would have no problems. | CodyleCoyote | 17/03/2016 |
4/9 Fourth of misty and windy day (Moel Hywell/Gwastedy Hill/Gwastedy Hill West Top/Rihw Gwroidd/RihwGwraidd West Top/Guilwern Hill/Gilwern Hill West Top/Beddugre Hill/Ysgwd0FFordd). Approached from North First stile at edge of forest is dodgy ! | Fergalh | 21/02/2016 |
Having done Crowborough where you can practically park on the summit I dont mind admitting that having spoken to the farmer I actually drove right up to the transmitter. That in itself was a fair accomplishment actualy, the track is muddy, rutted and loose. Maybe no probs in a 4x4 but in a front wheel drive peugeot 206.. a bit daft. Summit an easy 5 min stroll. Slightly lower top shows signs of being quarried for stone and also landfill. Top has a small cairn and a super view. Drive down also a bit hairy! | stig_nest | 16/02/2016 |
Parked at end of road (0162362725), walked up to Upper Cilgee and obtained permission. Took the transmitter track up and descended on a direct route. | tim747 | 04/07/2015 |
Parked by bend in track to Upper Cilgee Farm (SO016628) – Walked up to farm & after gaining permission from the farmer, took the track to the left of the farmhouse & then had an easy walk up to the summit. (PM,CM) | gerrybowes | 27/10/2014 |
Parked at 016628 and asked the very pleasant farmer at Upper Cilgee. Just over the hour with GB and CM. | bolton | 27/10/2014 |
With GB & PM | CJM | 27/10/2014 |
Parked in huge area just S of Argoed Bridge and went up through delightful access land, open hillside lightly wooded lower down, essentially the WSW ridge. We asked about access- use the track branching R, via cottage S of Laundry Cottage. We had a chat with the happy farmer before going over a gate high up to gain the non-ROW side of the fence and the summit. One barbed wire fence had to be negotiated before we got to ROW to return through pastures and woodland N of Treflyn. With brother, Pete, his 2nd visit and a bit reluctant to do Rhiw Gwraidd again. However, this excellent way up won him over. Took 3h in all, so a half-day walk rather than a quick bag. Fine spring day. | pwheeler | 06/05/2013 |
SO 0161163437 | Anton | 21/04/2013 |
past the farm (take road to left of farm house) than go past the strip of wood, cant miss the mast, but that isnt the top. need to walk along the ridge further along to get to top. | tallblond | 18/11/2012 |
5th M today w Jenx. Park at highest pt possible, SO012625 and walked track to farm. Asked farmer for OK to go through and up to trig/high point which was ok'd. After these to western top before direct line descent to farm and then start pt. | nordicstar | 17/11/2012 |
From SO006653 but path very hard to follow in places, and some of the forestry tracks no longer there ! | heavyhorses | 16/07/2012 |
Parked on drive to Upper Cilgu Farm and went to trig point first and then traversed ridge to westernmost top. Interesting boggy bit tween the 2 tops. | signyred | 18/07/2010 |
Parked at 016627 (13:00) and walked along track through farmyard and into fields. Steeply up to summit ridge; highest point not obvious but small cairn. Weather still fine. | dbb | 18/06/2010 |

Continued from W Top over this bump, past masts and through field of horses to trig. Vague summit. | Aye Jimmy | 21/03/2009 |
From East. Pleasant walk. Top is several small stones and a tiny bit of rock. | destaylor | 16/02/2009 |
Small cairn. I did the trig point, another hill nearby at 436m and the two official tops. | clivevilla | 01/06/2008 |
Probably an optical illusion - this top appears to be higher than its twin. | Buteobuteo | 29/04/2007 |

Parked on the minor road to the south of the hill. Decided to go the quick way via Upper Cilgee farm. Owner /worker said yes after much 'this is not a footpath' and ended with 'just this once'. So up to the first top | garyhoney | 18/02/2002 |
W Lesley. 2 nights sleeping flat in our Mondeo Estate car and climbing quiet hills - in hot weather -sunburn. afternoon outing over Carneddau & Aberedw Hill after Beacon Hill circuit in am. added this hill alone in evening | Chris Pearson | 30/04/2000 |
Two peaklets. Flat rounded grassy ridge above a farm. Neither the TV mast nor the trig column are on the highest spot. (24th July 2012 - visited the mast and over a BWF to the column 10332 at 12.30) | arranc | 07/02/1999 |
pleasant hill & view. W summit visited 23-Jan-99; E Top visited same time + on a 24h challenge; trig 7/8/4. head of rd @ 016627, tk thru fmyd then transmitter tk | RHW | 23/01/1999 |
Solo (Claire, Dave Howells, DG & SB did not summit). | MickyRoss | 25/05/1996 |
From SO 009 644. Used FP SE direction to reach the ridge - traversed it visiting the highest bits on the way to the W top - then returned steeply to the N and a short thrash thro' the wood. 2006? | summitsup | blank |
