From the parking at the end of the road leading up to the reservoir. Up the forest roads then along the NE side of the forest to the top. | NormanW | 25/11/2023 |
parked at the phone box at the little pull in to the southwest. Steep run up the lane to Ferm Newydd. I carried on for a bit and then headed South East up to Twyn y Gaer. Visited cairn and mound nearby. It was very windy. Decided to run north along the ridge and ended up going all the way to Chwarel y Fan. It was extremely windy on this hill at points it was difficult to stand let alone run. Returned the same way then split off to Upper House and down to small church and the car. Time taken 2 hours 30 minutes for 12.74 miles and 1989 feet of ascent. No other Walker but did see 2 motorcycles. | isabelle | 19/11/2023 |

From upper car park on Grwyne Fawr reservoir road.50 yards along path into forest there is a small path heading straight up,. This is shortest way and the one I took to emerge from forest at 256288 after joining the track near this point, then clear enough path through the bracken. But I returned via the zig zag track which is just as quick, more straightforward and a pleasanter walk. | dickscroop | 27/10/2021 |

Around three hour, eight and a half mile county top walk from Llanthony priory, if using the route from Jonny Muir's book of county tops ignore the beginning he describes instead when you reach the main road look straight ahead but slightly left and you will see a footpath sign for Bal Bach it is also on the map Jonny Muir has in his book but chooses to ignor it which is strange as its very well signed all the way. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 22/08/2017 |

From Grwyne Fawr to summit cairn on flat ridge. | isabelle | 10/12/2004 |
Chwarel y Fan was the last mountain in South Wales I had yet to climb. The ascent could have been completed in half an hour from Mynydd Du Forest, but to make the milestone more memorable, I made a day of it, starting from the Gospel Pass and walking over Twmpa and then to the trig point of Rhos Dirion, which in fact, though the highest point of the day at 2,339 feet, is merely a subsidiary of Waun Fach. By this time, Chwarel y Fan, looking from four miles away far more daunting than it actually is, was clearly visible. There followed an enjoyable fast walk across the moor, before the path finally began to rise to a beehive cairn and a winding rib to the summit. There was some grim satisfaction in reaching the goal, but the wind was so strong that I could not stay, lunching in a hollow instead. | peter4lc | 24/07/2004 |
Start ~ 254315, Capel-y-Ffin. Took lane then RoW past The Monastery and up onto ridge, bearing left for Chwarel y Fan. Then followed ridge to NW over Twyn Talycefn to Rhos Dirion. We then dropped NE to the col to ascend Twmpa. Returned SE over Darren Lwyd to Capel-y-Ffyin. With John Dummelow. | steve hudson | 09/02/2004 |

Distal point on Cwm Coyant stone circle (Car Pk)- Hay Bluff- Twmpa- Rhos Dirion- Chwarel y Fan- Nant Bwch- Pennant- stone circle walk. Lovely views with Capel y ffin and Gospel Pass on long whaleback ridge from Rhos Dirion. Descended to The Grange then walked up Nant Bwch in failing light, but still ok on reaching the escarpment. I cut down to join the road up from Hay on Wye which I could follow even as it became dark. Finding the car in the darkness (no torch, tut tut) took a few slightly anxious minutes | pwheeler | 02/01/1992 |
