A walk in the Brecon Beacons which took in Carreg Cadno 538m, Fan Gyhirych 726m, Fan Nedd 663m, Yr Allt 605m, Fan Bwlch Chwyth 603m and Fan Fraith 668m. Not a great forecast but clear summits until Yr Allt which were the important ones, and only rain on the last one. Some great views and scenery. | meltdiceburg | 18/10/2023 |

From the track end at SN896223. Up track to Bwlch y Duwynt, then down to boggy col to take in Fan Ned; retraced steps and followed Cambrian Way back to track, before bagging Fan Fraith and Gan Gyhirych. Descended ENE ridge above the steep slopes back to Bwlch y Duwynt. Took in the Simm of Yr Allt, then quickly back down the track where a freezing blast of shower got me rather wet. | Rockdoctor | 29/12/2022 |

Fan Bwlch Chwyth, Yr Allt, Fan Fraith a Fan Gyhirych. | sionbrit | 29/11/2020 |
Took the stony track across Y Gelli from the north. Gets pretty close to the summit of Fan Gyhirych, a good peat path softening the final 500m or so. Then popped over to Fan Fraith, extended dry conditions making the otherwise boggy crossing a doddle. Then the rather more testing ascent of Fan Nedd, doubling back to bag the easier tops of Yr Allt and Fan Bwlch Chwyth, a helpful peaty path making the going good to firm. | summitter | 21/09/2020 |
Long track in from north east. Fan Fraith, Fan Gyhirych, Ayr Allt, and out to trig before descending back to road. With B and R. | jenx | 17/09/2020 |

A bit of a stomp through bog on the way up. Then on to Fan Ghyirch. With Fiona and Trimarc2. Easy walk down using newly resurfaced track. All in a day trip from London Paddington leaving on the 5.28 to Neath and being driven back by Fiona. | r1 | 20/12/2019 |
With Meg and Xan. Carreg Cadno, Fan Fraith and Fan Gyhirych from the disused station. Scrambled up the double escarpment onto limestone pavement and across fairly rough stuff to the top of Carreg Cadno. Then down to the quarry road which provided a simple but dull route up to the col separating Fan Fraith and Fan Gyhirych. We had celebratory Welsh cakes and jelly babies on the latter as this was my last Sim and N in south Wales. | Herbert Anchovy | 26/07/2019 |

9am. Parked below Bwlch Cerrig Duon, upper reaches of Cwm Tawe, on narrow mountain road from Glyntawe to Trecastle. Walked west to join Beacon's Way at Llyn y Fan Fawr and up Bwlch y Giedd, turned south to reach Fan Hir summit, return north to bwlch, continue to twin summits of Fan Frycheiniog and Twr Fan y Foel, proceeded west to Picws Du, then returned to my van at Bwlch Cerrig Duon. I then drove down to A4067, turning left and drove a good mile north to park at layby on pass at 870195. From here I ascended west to Fan Gyhirych and Fan Fraith before returning to my van around 4.30pm.
Very enjoyable, warm, sunny day. Had a well-earned couple of pints at the Ancient Briton pub between Pen-y-cae and Ynyswen, north of Abercraf, on way back to hotel at Merthyr. | Dewi Prysor | 19/04/2017 |

The weather was unbelievable, just a T-Shirt all day. The Mountain rescue were conducting a training exercise today and were based in the Forestry Commission car park at Blaen Llia which is were I started. I was told to “ignore any injured bodies”. Climbed up to Fan Llia, excellent views of all the Brecon Beacons but especially Pen y Fan. Down to Maen Llia. Tried the “permissive path” up to Fan Nedd but it was non-existent so ended up following the contours. Down to Bwlch y Duwynt and then picked up the track. Altough Fan Fraith wasn't far off the track it was pretty boggy so got my boots wet. Double back to the track and then up to Fan Gyhirych with excellent views of the Carmarthen Fan. Headed South to pick up the track down to GR 873170 and then to the forest at GR 887170. Half-way through the forest were “No unauthorised persons” signs, which I ignored, didn't see anyone as it was a Sunday. Judging by the bike and foot tracks, everyone else had ignored them too. Circular route starting from the Blaen Llia Forestry Commission car park. A sunny ascent of Fan Llia (632m) by route of the Beacons Way. Then taking up the South Wales Traverse to descend over pathless ground to the river and minor road near Mean Llia, before climbing beneath an overcast sky, steeply over rough ground to the summit of Fan Nedd (663m). North then northwest at the cairn to Bwlch y Duwynt, to take the forestry track westward (and slightly south) before stepping out south over boggy terrain to Fan Fraith (668m). Retraced steps, then northwards to Fan Gyhirych (725m) where I met fellow walkers for the first time today. A quick chat, then very steep descent via South Wales Traverse (not always clear underfoot) to the A4067. Headed south along the road before taking up the permissive footpath that runs the course of the dismantled railway to Penwyllt. From Penwyllt, followed the Beacons Way roughly westwards through the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu Nature Reserve, then the Sarn He | VirtualMountain | 17/02/2015 |

Circular solo hike taking in Fan Nedd, Fan Gyhirych and Fan Fraith. | DaveD | 22/08/2013 |
Really good day starting from a track at SN896222 on to Y Gelli up to the saddle between Fan Gyhirych and Fan Fraith. Had to jump a moat at the top of Fan Gyhirych to reach the trig. Fan Fraith was a bit underwhelming, but worth ticking. Then followed the track back down to a stile and did the down and up to Fan Nedd. Took a slightly different track back up over Yr Allt and towards Fan Bwlch Chwyth and then dropped down to the west to pick up the original landrover track again. Didn't get started until 2pm, so came off the hill at 8.30pm. Beautiful day, had the hill to ourselves for the most part. | islamidget | 01/06/2013 |
Start and finish at layby opposite Cray Reservoir walked up the road to junction of Heal Senni followed up to second cattle grid and turned right at penwaundwr and followed path up past the disused quarry walked up Fan Bwlch Chwyth then took in Yr Allt, Fan Nedd, Fan Gyhirych, Fan Fraith then back down to car very up and down but enjoyable had the place to myself for 5 hours before meeting anyone | garw1 | 05/05/2013 |
Blue skies but very cold in the wind. A staightforward day mainly on land rover track which showed in the time. Great views east band west where the tops were snow capped. | SS | 02/02/2013 |
We did this with 3 other Fans on a lovely sunny October day (some hill fog & light showers in the morning before the cloud cleared). All this area of the Fforest Fawr (Great Forest) is part of the Cnewr Estate and there is only one permissive path on which all the Fans can be attained. However, we did a big trespass on the way back to reduce the 16 mile circular walk down to a more manageable 11 miles so we didn't have to retrace all our steps to get back to the car park at Blaen Llia. | jonglew | 20/10/2012 |
