Great day out, very clear, and a good one to finish off the Brecons. Gently sloped but very well featured walking up to the summit which was difficult to spot with all the undulations in the ground. Not made easier as I was racing the light and reached the summit at sunset. Took a bearing off the sunset to get down and luckily there was a large , deep quarry to stop me going to far off track on the way down.andrewroberts24/02/2022

Solo hike, first in sunshine but swiftly clouding over. Starting at car park beneath Bleaen Onneu quarry, to the 541m trig pillar and on to the Chartist Cave then Summit of Mynydd Langynidr. Descent to road and on to the disussed quarry of Cwar Blaen-dyffryn, then summit of Cefn yr Ystrad (617m). Descent around the quarry to Pen Bwlch Glasgwm, to follow ridge up to Tor y Foel (551m) and descent into Llangynidr. Return to car. ~26Km with ~800m ascent.VirtualMountain23/11/2021
Drove up quarry road, past gate at SO118130. This gate appears to be open mid week and until 15:30 each day. No other restrictions on driving up I could see. I was able to follow the potholed track successfully all the way to the junction at SO084145. Leaving a short walk SE around the main quarry hole to approx SO088142 and onto the hillside above to reach the summit. Very quick and easy route if you are in a hurry.geralddavison12/11/2021

Circular walk from Pontsticill around the reservoir and back via some peaks including Cefn yr Ystrad. Walk during heatwave, so very hot and lots of sun protection required - no wonder the route was so quiet!JazDisney18/07/2021

Off road parking near Pyrgad. Up out of Cwm Pyrgad onto top road. Micro nav exercises towards trig point and back. Met local MRT again on a grid search practice with their dogs after seeing them in action the previous day on a helicopter evac of a young person in a large school DofE group in appalling weather. With Penda, Nuttall walk 13.3. Temperature high 20s Celsius. Wales' most boring hill? Would hate to be up there in cloud or mist! Interesting cairns on top and good views, however.beorwulf27/06/2018
1/4 Marilyn day. Ascent of Cefn yr Ystrad from Pontsticill. Always thick mist when I am on this mountain, with tricky navigation! 9.6km in 2h20m. (S)silveracorn_alan08/05/2018
Done the Pontsticill BW on my mountain bike, and didn't fancy getting nicked driving to the quarry, so I took a really good route from Dyffryn Crawnon. Parking is extremely difficult, but a lovely lady let me use her parking space. I took an exciting route up the mapped non-ROW from Ysgubor-isaf (ruin), which would be wet except the ground was frozen rock hard. A bit of dodging fallen trees, but the path is there. Amazing crags at the rim of the cwm, can dodge SW below them (steep) to a gap where someone has removed the top strand of the BWF allowing easy access to the BW. Steeply up again into the quarry, then SW-ish across the moor on sheep tracks to the summit plateau. Lovely in the late afternoon sun, visited all cairns and the trig. Conventional descent to the quarry and then to the waterfall to join the proper footpath down.Gill24/02/2018

Sunny then cloudy, walk all on easy usually grassy terrain.DanTrig18/09/2016

Hike with my two sons from Pontsticill Reservoir, ascending through unfrequented and beautiful area of shake holes to summit Cefn yr Ystrad (619m). Descending northward between open cast mines, ascending Pant y Creigiau (569m) before descending to Torpantau, and taking the Brecon Mountain Railway back to Pontsticill. Warm dry day, most clouds covered with modest cool breeze. ~15km distance, 550m ascent.VirtualMountain23/07/2016

With Jenx, from end of old quarry road. Note there is a gate at Trefil now saying no access however when we went through it was 'damaged' and not in use. Possible to drive into quarry as previously described. On the wet, windy clagged out day we had that was very appreciated. Interesting limestone features on the hill.nordicstar21/02/2016

Usual starting point for this hill seems to be the southern end of the Pontsticill Reservoir, but we attacked it from the north, parking at Pont Blaen-y-glyn where there's a small car park, so as to take in the Pant y Creigiau trig point. The industrial scar left by the limestone quarry is interesting.jonglew18/11/2012

We drove to the end of the road to the quarry. From the road head we walked through quarry landscapes to a trig point and some cairns. Retuning back to the road. We got to a locked gate when leaving the area, so we had to call the police to let us out.ChinnockC23/04/2011

Micro-Nav practice on Cefn Yr Ystrad above Merthyr. Walked out along Brecon Mountain Railway from car park at north end of Pontstcill Reservoir. Started Micro Nav from the 'Inscribed Stone' following shake holes and small water features with good accuracy. Lunched at Trig Point (617). Continued via Cairn Y Bugail onto larger water feature next to a large shake hole (096 132) south onto a double shake hole. Found 2 boundary stones. The second I had to do a box search to locate which was a flat stone in the centre of my search area! Couldn't find a 3rd stone. Returned via Twyuau Gwynion & the inscribed stone. Overcast/dark with south westerly breeze 20-30 mph. Cool, cold at times.Butty15/08/2006

This was the last day of the heatwave, as evidenced by the building wind. This walk started from Pontiscill, though the approach from Talybont Reservoir might give a completely different perspective. The path runs under the old Brecon Mountain Railway and heads in a straight line north-east towards Cwar yr Ystrad, where I left it to climb the grassy limestone slopes to an area of shake holes, which had to be circumvented to reach the trig point at the summit.peter4lc16/06/2004

Circular walk from Hut at Dol-y-Gaer. Buarth-y-caeru, Cefn yr Ystrad / Garn Felen (617) with a micro navigation objective of Chartist's cave.PGT197518/02/2000
Drove overnight to Pontsticill with WCT where stayed in car. At first light set out for summit via the bridleway that leaves the minor road at the water treatment works. The route to the summit once the bridleway was left followed no particular path.garyhoney13/02/2000

From Pontsticill with DSFred Windsor11/08/1999
As part of a horseshoe of Dyffryn Crawnon from Llangynidr. Just off route to wrap up my last 2000 ft summit in the area. This hill was the worst part- rough heather, then I was pleased to have a compass bearing (in Hermon) to lead to a safe way down into a disused quarry. Resuming the horseshoe and crossing Tor y Foel was a delight. Back in 1999, I had no idea I was bagging 2 relative hills. Cloud just kept off Cefn yr Ystrad, but the bearing was still useful.pwheeler16/07/1999

Marc & Bill to Cefn yr Ystrad, Bill's HUNDREDTH, with Marc from car park at 056 176, via Pant y Creigiau and col of Bryniau Gleison. Sunshine, rain and summit mist. Shame about the abandoned quarry, but pleasant limestone summit and many fine sink holes!JtwoUD07/06/1998
