2/5. Parked in a layby on the south bound A467 just after the Colebrookvale turning to the NE. Followed the fp SSW then SW up the steep bit onto the plateau (there is a zig zag path up the steep bit rather than the straight line up shown on the map). Walked along the edge then across to the trig and hp. Returned the same way. Very quiet on the top with no traffic noise. Lovely sunny morning. Solo. | richard69 | 28/11/2023 |
Started from Wincheston, took track west which then curved round and led along the edge of the summit plateau. Thenplodded across the heather to the trig point. Afterwards down to Blaina to climb Coety Mountain. | IanHHill | 15/09/2023 |

Quick ascent after a charge in Brynmawr. Lovely sunny day. | davechaffey | 03/06/2023 |
Parked at start of trail in car park on A4046 in Aberbeeg, walked up easy path north, turn left after solar, walk to end of solar farm then then right up path parallel to trees, long hike up to trig then back down same way, at solar farm went straight ahead and past farm building and small ruin, down to forest and zig zag back down to start, 4 hours | Tribal2er | 17/08/2022 |
West Monmouthshire Golf Club > Bwlch y Garn > Mynydd Carn-y-Cefn. | Winterfloodian | 27/07/2022 |
Low cloud so bagged this one but then changed plans for the day and went to lower hills on way home. From high parking above Ebbw Vale, bw to above pond then direct to rutted track on crest. Poor visibility so had to wander about a bit until I spotted trig. | Nick Canute | 04/04/2022 |
With KeithByTheC. 12.8 mile circuit from Abertillary.
Abertillary, Coety Mountain, Cefn Goch (Tump), Cwm Celyn, Mynydd Carn-y-cefn all the way along the ridge to entrance of wood at 203048, then down through wood to Abertillary. | JulieB | 25/03/2022 |
From Cefn Coch headed NW. Down good track into Cwmcelyn. Up steeply by ditch SW from 196085. Over stile then left to 2 more to S of Llanerch-y-pant. Choice of faint paths on to summit ridge. Bit of heather bashing to trig. Down long S ridge to Abertillery | KeithByTheC | 25/03/2022 |
Obligatory St David's Day outing. Very misty and a cold damp wind but it's still really great to be down here getting up the hills once again. | Alex C | 01/03/2022 |
Revisit … 1st visit 12/2005 … cracking 8 mile run up from Brynmawr Asda car park … sun out breezy but tracks not too wet on top … so much litter in first half mile tho | milejunkie | 26/02/2022 |
An anticlockwise circuit around the head of the valley from Ebbw Vale Parkway station on a cold day. Up the zigzag path from Waun Lwyd, then up Tarren y Trwyn and along the top of the ridge to the trig, which was surrounded by skitish ponies. From here I headed north to the rather trashed Bronze Age cairn (unfortunately motor bike tracks show the trashing is still continuing) which has excellent views north towards the limestone plateaus of Mynydd Llangatwg with the Black Mountains beyond. Dropped steeply west to Ebbw Vale, for a second steep climb up the other side to Y Domen Fawr. | thesweetcheat | 22/01/2022 |
Circular walk from Blaenavon, fine weather, good walking on paths but off paths is very slow in heather and long grass. Lovely taste of the Welsh countryside. | JazDisney | 16/01/2022 |
Parked on Inkerman Drive, walked up to the left of the mast then followed my nose up the mynyddside (footpath impossible to follow) to the good path that runs along the edge of the cwm. Descended alongside drainage channel from Llanerch-y-pant to lane at bottom. This would be the best route to ascend - walk across the cattle grid and follow the road for about 100m then turn left and go up steeply between planatations.
It was quite nice on the summit. I couldn't see buildings or hear traffic and it occurred to me that this would've been nice hill-walking country if it hadn't been built up. | Wycombe Wanderer | 15/01/2022 |
Street parking in Nantyglo. Walked up the track towards the Golf Clubhouse, and continued up onto the hillside. A track straight up the hill and straight along the centre of the ridge is not on the OS map. It takes you near to the summit trig. Visited the alternate hp then back the same way. Pleasant walk. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 24/11/2021 |
Abertillery - Arail - Mynydd Carn-y-cefn - Nantyglo - Cefn Coch - Coety Mountain - Gwastad - Abertillery | davidpettit84 | 19/11/2021 |
Parked Inkerman Row, West side, Blaina. Up through forest track, round base of walled field, and diagonally up the east face of the hill. Top and alternative summit, which appears lower. | iangalbraith | 22/10/2021 |
1 x parking on a tiny triangle at the foot of the unsignposted tarmacadam bridleway leading up from the housing estate SO189105. Very rough stony track up through golf course, after which the surface improves, almost to the summit. | Isbjorn | 15/04/2021 |
easy park at golf course (highest in uk) tracks nearly all way also visit what loks higher than tp to se 4.5k 60 mins | underhill | 14/04/2021 |
circular walk from pen-y-fan pond | richardrosser | 08/04/2021 |
From golf clubhouse to north. Up the track then short path off to summit. 2/7 Marilyn, good views following the storm the day before. | N.Morters | 26/08/2020 |
Walked up from the club house on paths. Hill heavily scarred by trail bikes. Reckoned an area about 50 m south could be higher than the trig. | Herbert Anchovy | 01/08/2020 |
From Golf club cp | Neil Midgley | 27/07/2020 |
5/6 Dewey day. Parked on the estate road at SO 188 106 and walked up bridleway past the golf course and up the ridge, until just below the summit. Then short ascent to the trig. Returned the same way. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 21/07/2020 |

5/5 Parked in Nantyglo village and walked up in thick mist. | Rounsfell | 25/01/2020 |
From street parking on Inkerman Row, Blaina west side 19671 08399. Walked up via the drainage track and then right of way to summit plateau and then across a short pathless section to the trig. Under two mile and done in hour and half. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 19/01/2020 |
From 187104. This hill is a complete mess, used by scrambler type motorbikes, also kids on ATVs doing donuts to churn up the ground. Also much plastic litter. Dismayed to find that there are so many litter louts in this part of beautiful Wales. | NormanW | 06/10/2019 |
North ridge, tracks and paths from clubhouse. Heavy shower on the way down. | Topographer57 | 04/09/2019 |
Nipped up from Nantyglo as dusk fell - weather holding fine | wychwood | 19/02/2019 |

From Ebbw Vale - wet, windy low vis | abbo0001 | 15/12/2018 |
Up past golf course with its “grass carpets” which are very green compared to the yellow straw which is the golf course! | elizyanne | 14/07/2018 |
2/4 Marilyn Day. Parked on the estate road at SO 188 106 and walked up bridleway past the golf course and up the ridge, until just below the summit. Then short ascent to the trig. Returned the same way. A round trip of 6km in 1h20m. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 08/05/2018 |
From SO178092 - initially following the old tramway. Also visited the alternative HP. | summitsup | 06/04/2018 |
Parking space near the Golf Course at 187104 on the bend at the end of a BOAT which has been blocked with large boulders, so no worries about vehicle access. Followed the track up the hill, very easy with nice views. I went to the highest point of the track, and so overshot the trig, but no worries, it's a pleasant walk on the plateau. | Gill | 23/02/2018 |
From the multistory car park in Ebbw Vale. Folllowed sign to Newtown over bridge. Straight on at Methodist chapel then right and up minor road, left up path to disused quarry and up by top of golf course. The upper reaches of this hill have been horribly scarred and disfigured by the activity of off-road motorbikes, really ruining what could be rather an attractive little hill. | lenman | 30/12/2017 |
3/5M From coalbrookvale track to farm, then path of sorts up through hillside to gain high track to the top. | robertphillips | 11/11/2017 |
With: hb; Parked at SO189105 and followed byway through golf course on to ridge then cut across to summit trig. Returned by same route. Very easy route. | Ian Baines | 20/08/2017 |
With: ib; | Helen Baines | 20/08/2017 |
From Westside in Blaina. The path shown on the map didn't exist, so I just went up the reclaimed grass slope and then steeply to the flat top. Then down south-west to Waun-Lwyd but it was difficult to follow the rights-of-way. | Alan Moore | 16/06/2017 |
From Nantyglo. Straightforward. With TJB | trimarc2 | 02/05/2017 |
Repeat ascent with Denise. Ascent from Ebbw Vale having left car to fend for itself in the town's multi storey car park (free). Snow on the summit. | RichardM | 28/02/2017 |
From the free multi storey carpark in central Ebbw Vale, in snow.Trig on summit area, HP very close by. Muddy grass and heather. | Denise | 27/02/2017 |
From golf club which apparently is the highest in the UK (really?). Track snakes its way right over the hill which makes you wonder why the motorcrossers feel the need to tear the rest of the hill up. Headed over to the trigpoint which was guarded by a muddy moat and a moo who didnt want to leave. Pillar is in a bit of a state and looking at the flush bracket its clear the damage is deliberate. Ground to the SE looks higher but probably isnt. | stig_nest | 15/09/2016 |
From Golf Road in Nantyglo up to the summit and back. Fantastic view. With baby Ross. | islamidget | 24/06/2016 |
Parked in Nantyglo and walked up via track across golf course, then direct to summit. Return via track to east side of hill which gives the best views. | Cas-gwent | 13/04/2016 |
From off road parking at Coalbrookvale w Jenx. Follow ROW to farm then tracks thru woods and up above landscaped former mine areas. Good zig zag tracks can be found leading to plateau area. Wet and windy on top, nice trig point. back more directly down steep ground top lake and rejoined way in. | nordicstar | 20/02/2016 |
