Room for a car at end of minor road past Llan-danglws Farm (ST 26001 97850). Along Sirhowy Valley Walk up to summit. | JGC | 12/04/2024 |
3 & 4/5. Parked at the Sirhowy Valley Country Park and had a direct thrash upwards along the boundary of mature conifer trees to the first level forestry track. Hard work and after that followed the track and Cambrian Way to the Mynydd Machen trig. Descended on the Cambrian Way and road to Glenside and across the footbridge to the Newtown industrial estate and under the A467. The plan was then to follow the zigzag tracks up through the woods to Mynydd y Lan, but finished up on a more direct mountain bike track for the lower half of the hill before rejoining the forestry track to the top wood boundary. Thereafter a short walk across to the boundary stone hp. Returned via the forestry track to the A467 subway and along the road to the Country Park in the dusk. Good views from both tops. Solo. | richard69 | 28/11/2023 |
From ST 2023 9047. Very misty and getting dark - no views. | summitsup | 12/11/2023 |

Short circular walk up to Mynydd Machen, easy parking at Sirhowy Valley Country Park. Footpath back via Newtown industrial estate was closed, so diverted up through the park. | JazDisney | 24/04/2022 |
With KeithByTheC. A pleasant 12 mile circuit of Mynydd Y Lan and Mynydd Machen from Cwmcarn. | JulieB | 24/03/2022 |
From Pen-Rhiw Tip. Up wide track to trig. Descended down track and RoW's to northeast down to Black Vein. Under road, over river and rail to canal and back to Cwmcarn with diversion west of canal where towpath closed for major repairs. | KeithByTheC | 24/03/2022 |
Space for 1 or 2 cars at 216907, up concrete track, follow all the way up to towers and trig, excellent views, continue down steep muddy track down to old quarry, through quarry and join up to path, took a right across a field/big trees and through the beautiful raven walk back to road and up to start | Tribal2er | 13/03/2022 |
Back up this way for the new bing Tump to the west so it was good to nip up here once again and at at least get to see the view in the daytime. | Twice Shy | 08/03/2022 |
The final hill on a sunny solo walk from Wyllie, via the many Bronze Age cairns on Mynydd Bach, Twyn Cae-Hugh and Twyn yr Oerfel (with the tops of Mynydd y Grug and Pen-rhiw Tip). The large Bronze Age summit barrow is very fine, despite the damage. Unfortunately the visit was marred by a couple of idiots in a 4x4 who thought parking on top of the barrow was a bit of a laugh. From the top I took the steep path east to descend, headed SE to Twyn Pant-teg, then down to Pontymister to get the bus. | thesweetcheat | 30/01/2022 |
MDC headtorch club run from Machen …. 30 yrs or so after first ascent | milejunkie | 25/01/2022 |
Up the way PH came down on a cold sunny day with snow on the ground further up. From Sirhowey Valley CP carpark. Great views over the Bristol Channel. | Mark Sims | 05/01/2022 |
Parked at Sirhow Valley Country Park. Scrambled straight up the steep slope to reach the unpaved road. Discovered a path on the way down - it starts opposite the public toilets then take the first left. There are also places to park higher up, for example above the farm buildings at ST 216 908, just below the wooden Machen Common sign. | paulhilder | 05/12/2021 |
Free parking in Sirhow Country Park in valley to E. Mapped paths which are steep direct ascents don't exist so did a long traversing loop, approaching summit from East. HP on grassy tumulus next to trig. Aerial enclosure nearby lower. Good urban and sea views on sunny day | Denise | 28/11/2021 |

Mast road from NW. Good view of Newport. Summit occupied by couple who had driven, fortunately for them the barrier was still open when they got down. | Topographer57 | 01/10/2018 |
Took a detour on the way home from a camping trip in Glamorgan to take in this Marilyn.

Parked on layby just in front of access barrier to the mast road and took a leisurely walk to the top. Amazing views on summit! Spotted a few Stonechats on the way back down. | Gerry the Ranger | 27/07/2018 |
From ST 216907. Parking for a couple or cars. Followed the vehicle track to mast and summit trig.
was pasted by several vehicles driving up all the way. Ho Hum. Last Marilyn of Section 32 for elizyanne and myself | GmacT | 16/07/2018 |
Easy walk up. Practically a car park at the top! Sat on bench and watched the jets go by. Also watched helicopters drop water on the nearby hill. Trees on fire and had been for days. | elizyanne | 16/07/2018 |
2/3 A steep pull up through the woods from Sirhowy Valley Country Park and then easy tracks. Great views from the top. Tried varying the descent but the path N of Gelli-ffiniog farm is not signed and doesn't seem to exist once the wood is reached. Final descent by the signed ROW a little to the W, i.e. the way we came up. | milimana | 17/05/2018 |
2/3 Marilyn day. The ascent of Mynydd Machen (362) along the ridge from the mountain road. A round trip of 5km in 1h10m. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 11/05/2018 |
Bagged as part of a long run from Cardiff to Risca. Coming up from Machen village, but the clear-felling presented a real challenge to get up and over. | kasharic | 11/03/2018 |
From the Rhymney river in Machen village, up the footpath through the woodland behind the church, then diagonally northeast up through the clear-fell, then through another wood, and out onto the scrubby slopes on the east side of the mountain, then west up the Ridgeway path to the trig point at the summit. | Mariana Trench | 04/02/2018 |
A good circular walk over Mynydd Machen and Mynydd y Lan from Crosskeys station in rain and mist. Crossed the road bridge over the Afon Ebwy E of the college, then took the FP signposted Mynydd Machen below Glenside, and followed my nose upwards through the mist. After Mynydd Machen, took the Rhymney Valley Ridgeway walk, then zig-zagged down to the footbridge below Wattsville. Up the FP towards Hafod Tudor, then onto the forestry track towards Mynydd y Lan. At the highest point, look for a good path following the top of the forestry, crossing a valley containing trail bike tracks, then following the forest fence NE up the hill, steep but easy, to meet a fence heading SE. A good path along the fence, hop over it where it turns E, and wander up to the summit. Head E to the forest fence, where you'll see a path heading down Craig y Pandy towards Crosskeys in long zig zags. | Gill | 20/01/2018 |
Failed to climb from Mâchent the previous day due to footpaths being closed for forestry workings. So tried from north.. Drove up narrow minor road from Cwmfelinfach as far as the cattle grid where there is a car park (and, at the moment, a sign saying ‘road ahead closed’).From here it is a straightforward walk up a track. | lenman | 29/12/2017 |
Otis | Glenford | 28/12/2017 |
With TJB. From Cwmfelinfacm. Enjoyable walk. Straightforward. Good view point despite drizzle. | trimarc2 | 15/11/2017 |
4/8M drove all the way to near the top. | robertphillips | 09/11/2017 |
Still dark and still raining. Views from the trig limited to just a few metres but the bench was much appreciated. | Alex C | 01/10/2017 |
I drove to the gate to the NW then walked up from there. Pillar good condition and located near huge mast, great views today. Clem, Hump, Marilyn, P30 Tump. | griefmiester | 23/08/2017 |

Followed concrete path up to the mast, just a little bit further to the trig. Amazing views in every direction, beautifully clear afternoon. With stig_nest. | Laura.W | 20/03/2016 |
Drove up to the usual concrete track start from Risca. The round could really use some tlc. Man alive are there a lot of very large potholes.
On ascent up track look out for the tree with legs. Youll see what i mean. Summit trig with a seriously huge view. No sounds from the valleys up here. Just peace. With Laura.W. | stig_nest | 20/03/2016 |
A straight forward Marilyn walk ¾ mile up concrete drive then rough track to aerial masts and adjacent trig point. Made more interesting by continuing over summit down trail bike track, making a circular route, returning at bottom of hill to the east. Parked in small parking space (big enough for one) at ST 21598 90756. The hardest part was navigating the narrow roads and bridge over Sirhowey River from Cwmfelinfach to the west. I think it would be easier to approach from the east. In fact I recommend it. | mntainman | 10/01/2016 |
Drove up the track, then final stroll to top. Strange to put a slag heap there! | jenx | 19/11/2015 |
Hill walkers use the track mast to drive up and exercise dogs near the spoil heaps. In the dreek seemed like a good idea and had a short therefore 10min walk to top. 4/7 today and time saved used for a lunch stop! | nordicstar | 19/11/2015 |
From the minor road where there is space for a couple of cars at ST 217907. Followed the vehicle track to mast and summit trig. Early morning mist meant views were limited. | bowlesy | 10/10/2015 |
Part of LDWA Ravens Dare 26-mile challenge walk | liljonb | 03/10/2015 |
Walked up from Machen, on a beautiful sunny day, via the slag heap on the common, which looked like an interesting ridge from a distance. Long conversations with the only two people I saw meant that I had to scuttle back down after visiting the trig point to collect my daughter from school... | Cas-gwent | 02/10/2015 |
Easy 15 minute walk up from parking spot at
ST 216907 for SOTA. | G4OBK (Phil) | 14/08/2015 |
There is a driveable track up to 232897 and then a walk up to the summit on various tracks. With GB. | bolton | 15/07/2015 |
Parked by cattle grid on road to SE at ST23435 89444 (could go higher but road rutted) – Wide tracks to summit. (PM) | gerrybowes | 15/07/2015 |
From road to NW (21575 90742) track is driveable all the way to the summit. Fine views of the slag heaps! | tim747 | 06/07/2015 |
Took part in the Caerphilly challenge 15 mile Twmbarlwm trek with Hilary, Maggie and Karen. Stayed in the Castle Inn self catering rooms next to pub. Very friendly owners. Pouring down with rain at start of walk but brightened up in the afternoon to allow for lovely views. | Suzyj | 09/05/2015 |
Parked at 203905 and headed west to what looked like a fine ridge. This turned out to be a slag heap. Once over this, onward to the classic Marilyn experience of masts, trig point and bronze age cairn. From the summit the slag heap is surreal, looking like a big slag slug on the landscape. View north up the valley is also weird, with the buildings in the valley bottom looking like a lake, as they don't creep up the steep valley sides, but stick to a contour. | mindlessflogger | 07/02/2015 |
Easy walk from south up access road. Road a little rough though, head for the masts and you can't go wrong | Fergalh | 16/11/2014 |
18.15 with Jamie after seeing York city lose a 7th minute lead after player sent off on second half and shipping three goals. Compensation of sunset on a new Marilyn. And after losing a demoted Marilyn this is Jamie's 300th again!! | vegibagger | 11/10/2014 |
Initially suppose to be along the 'Raven Walk' I detoured off a few points the walk totalled 21.71 miles. | ccstar | 16/08/2014 |

Parked in Machen (The Crescent) and did a circuit taking in Mynydd Machen. If you take your time and look really closely at the top you might be able to spot the television transmission mast behind the trig point. | KingBaldy | 03/03/2013 |
Machen circular | Francis | 02/12/2012 |
good walk up through forestry from Machen (church) and across reclaimed land from old mine/slag heaps with great views of the Gwent valleys. Shitty weather, good company ... francis! | ystrad | 02/12/2012 |
First check-point on the Where Ravens Dare 15.5 mile walk organised by South Wales LDWA | Al Fouracre | 06/10/2012 |
Parked at 223905 and took the fp heading W slanting up steep slope then to summit along service track.Down to road on service track. Appalling conditions, the wind so strong it ripped my waterproof trousers at a seam. Cloud lowering all the time, the plan to bag 2 or 3 more Marilyns was abandoned after this hour. | pwheeler | 29/04/2012 |
Came up from NW. Good hill but where did those spoil tips come from? | robphys | 24/07/2011 |
Parked below cattle grid at entrance to common to SE (10:15). Easy walk up track and path to summit near masts. Weather fine. Finish 10:55 | dbb | 08/05/2011 |
Walked up from the country park, either my map reading has gone to pot of half the paths have move/disappeared. | rhalstead | 21/11/2010 |
From Rhymney Valley trail to W. Lots of litter. Summit spoilt by mast. | Aye Jimmy | 03/09/2010 |
Easy walk up track from NW. My satnav tried to send me up the track from the east and did not find the direct hairpin approach. Ended up driving in from Cwmfelinfach - a long, steep, and narrow road. Use the hairpin! | chriswatson | 23/08/2010 |
Coming from Crosskeys / Ricsa you cross the river and drive up the steep and winding road with nowhere to stop. Eventually you come to an open gate on the right - the track allows you to drive to the top, parking as soon as possible leaves you with 0.5K | Malcvolm | 08/03/2010 |
Parked to west by smaller mast at entrance to driveway. Walked through a farm full of wrecked cars and dogs so was pleased to find my car in one piece when I got back to it. | clivevilla | 30/01/2010 |
Parking at various places tricky. Finally parked to the North of Machen. TomTom reckoned the road goes through to 203 905 but its impossible. | destaylor | 10/03/2009 |
Parked on road below Upper Ochrwyth to SE although you are able to drive passed the farm to a car park. Although there were 2 cars + a large tent located close to summit. Best to drive in from Lower Machen. | Dugswell2 | 21/09/2008 |
Straightforward ascent from the north. | JohnW | 06/08/2008 |
