Simple walk up to trig. Wandered around in the undergrowth with the GPS searching for the highest point. As richard69, I was unable to find the flat rock. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 04/12/2023 |
4/5. Parked at Blaen Baglan farm and followed the Wales Coastal Path around the hill, before turning off just below the top to the trig. Hunted around to the E for the small rock mentioned in the height survey 10 years ago but to no avail - maybe overgrown now with heathery moss? Good views W of the trig with the sun setting over the sea and out towards the Mumbles. Didn't quite appreciate the size of the Port Talbot steel works. Solo | richard69 | 30/11/2023 |
From Blaen-Baglan farm. The path from the forestry track to the trig point as shown on the O.S. is encrouched by bracken in August but walkable. From the trig to the summit is machete time. Don't wear shorts! | Neil Midgley | 22/08/2023 |
Walked up from Port Talbot train station via the WCP upland route. A fine Bronze Age round barrow on the summit, and good views from the tracks on the way up and down. From here went on to Mynydd y Gaer and Foel Fynyddau. | thesweetcheat | 25/02/2023 |
Solo from NW. Good views, sunny but hazy. 50mins round trip. | Nick Canute | 12/02/2023 |
Park on road o/s farm 618793, down track to cool rusty farm building, track goes 90° right here, follow track up, take second wide track on left then right after 40m ish, up to trig and return | Tribal2er | 06/02/2023 |
Last and 113th Marilyn for 2022. Started near the end of the path in the housing estate at 772922. Followed path around towards Baglan, cutting up a short steep obvious path through the wood until it hit a larger track, left up the track, right at the next track Followed around to meet path going up the ridge from the bend to the trig (marked on 1:25000 map). Returned down to the track, then followed the Coast Path to the bottom of some steps where a panoramic track contoured around the hillside above Pantdu to the cemetery. Turned left along a bridletrack following the river until it reached a bridge and road back up to the car. 4 mile circuit 2hrs walking time. | JulieB | 31/12/2022 |
I did a long day from Port Talbot and climbed up to Mynydd Dinas via the WCP. A really steep ascent before following the easy track around the hillside. I then followed the well work path to the summit. Pretty good views towards the coast. Nice hill to start the day. | morgs4mountains | 21/12/2022 |
Easy but uninspiring ascent from parking area at Blaen-Baglan. We followed the coast path up forest track then onto a smaller forest track and finally an overgrown but easy-to-follow trail to the trig and summit. Not great views as the surrounding saplings obscure the view. Last hill of the day. Earlier that day we bagged Cadair Fawr, Moel Penderyn and nearby Foel Fynyddau. | DanTrig | 05/07/2022 |
Pleasant walk up to the trig point - saw a Cuckoo! There followed an unsatisfactory toil through the undergrowth in search of the highest point - long trousers recommended... | paulhilder | 03/06/2021 |
We started at the Pontrhydyfen Viaduct and walked down the old line to Aberavon, then climbed up Mynydd Dinas completing the full circular route around the hill with a detour to the trig. Great views up here and a peaceful place. With Alma Aurea. | meltdiceburg | 31/05/2021 |
From Blaen Baglan to the W. Didn't see the rock, but romped over all the ground 50-75m E of the trig. | DanMaisieBex | 16/05/2021 |
Rhedeg o Cimla. | sionbrit | 12/05/2021 |
I found a couple of geocaches on the way up, but not the one at the top. | Alancache | 10/08/2020 |
Circular route from Cwmafan...along cycle route 887 to Pony y Cwmer then up the zig zag forest tracks to Foel Fynyddau - the top of which has now been clear felled but the MTB path remains on the west edge of the former forest from 784944 to the summit and is more pleasant than the zogzags. Desended to the west towards Baglan then welsh coast path to Mynydd Dinas, detour to summit, then coast path back to route 887 and back to Cwmafon. | Clive G | 05/08/2020 |
From farm buildings on bend in road north, following nearby Foel Fynyddau. Up forest tracks, then sketchy overgrown path through gorse/braken to trig. 5/7 Marilyn. Good views esp. of Port Talbot and M4 | N.Morters | 25/07/2020 |
1st Hill of the year ! From Cwmafan following footpaths and forestry tracks | Ramblingpaul | 05/07/2020 |
from housing site past farm mynydd dinas back to farmfoel Fynyddaau, mynydd y gaer through plantation then TP of Daren wen and back through baglan | underhill | 15/03/2020 |
From Tyn y Twr along Bwlch Road and up. Summit looks quite different to the photo with young pines growing up all around. | Vertigo | 01/03/2020 |
From Blaen Baglan Farm | lenman | 31/12/2019 |
Parked in housing estate then followed farm road and track up. | Stevooo | 10/11/2019 |
From the farm on the corner at Baglan. Towards the trig a faint path enters through gorse into high bracken but no trouble at thus time of year. High Point a little along from the trig in light woodland. | NormanW | 08/10/2019 |
Port Talbot - Mynydd Dinas - Mynydd y Gaer - Foel Fynyddau - Pen y Castell - Mynydd Emroch - Port Talbot | Mark Jackson | 15/07/2019 |
Run from Neath along Bwlch Road and picked up Wales Coast Path upto trig point TP4379. Perfectly clear day and cracking view of Swansea Bay and across the channel to north Devon coastline. | philwhit | 11/05/2019 |
Through the woods from Cwmavon. | Winterfloodian | 03/05/2019 |
summit plateau easy to access from All Wales Coast Path, plateau overgrown with remnant woodland but superb views from edge over port talbot and coast strip to swansea | richardrosser | 20/12/2018 |
From Blaen Baglan. On summit at last after several false trails. Tracks a/c up around hill as far as eight o'clock then sharp left back to nine o'clock. From there a narrow path leads eastwards to the trig. Soldiered on to given HP but amid the long heather, bracken, brambles, shrub and young pines I cannot imagine how anyone located it with any certainty. | Topographer57 | 30/09/2018 |
2/7 Marilyn day. The ascent of Mynydd Dinas from Blaen-Baglan farm at SS 759 926 (limited parking). Along the Wales Coast Path, then short diversion up through the wood on forest track. Bird's eye view of the giant Port Talbot steelworks - unusual but dramatic mountain view! 4km in 1 hour. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 09/05/2018 |
4th and final Marilyn of the afternoon mopping up in 32C. From N, parked at farm Blaen-Baglan. Followed tracks all the way, then path through gorse to trig. | Minto | 10/04/2018 |
A train walk, starting from Port Talbot Parkway and finishing at Skewen. Up the Wales Coast Path to Mynydd Dinas, which is not as expected from the map: it's a lovely heathery summit with a few pine trees. Down the WCP to Blaen-Baglan, then along the road to pick up the by-way and path leading to Foel Fynyddau. Back to the road, and towards Neath, picking up the forest track after 280m, which comes out above a hill fort, then down to Pant-Howel-Ddu. Down the very quiet and pleasant road to Neath, and a soggy by-way to Pencaeru, and into Neath. Over the pedestrian bridge past the station, and up the hill towards Glynfelin. Paths and tracks up the hill to join the bridleway below the summit of Mynydd Drumau. Over the fence to the trig, then soggy, muddy grass to pick up the bridleway into Skewen, for the return train to Cardiff. | Gill | 18/01/2018 |
Otis | Glenford | 30/12/2017 |
From SS759925. Made at least three forays into the veg to make sure of the extra 22cms but can't be sure if I located the bit of reference rock as it would seem to now be well covered. Anyway, I'm counting it as I must have trod on everything in the direction and distance given from the TP. | summitsup | 06/12/2017 |
2/8M parked at farm good tracks all the way acw round hill to small path through gorse to summit. | robertphillips | 10/11/2017 |
From Blaen Baglan on forest track past 'Oscars view' which would have had a fine view over Baglan Bay chemical works when it existed. Found small track to trig and fought way to HP. | PeterD | 15/08/2017 |
From Blaen Baglan where there is space for a few cars. The Wales Coastal Path is well maintained and easy to follow as are the forest tracks. We found the small path to the trig without too much trouble. However, the RoWs to the south and east of the hill are a total mess. Loads of blockages, undergrowth, overgrowth, fallen trees, aggressive dogs and subsiding paths. Stick to the forest! With Keith and baby Ross. | islamidget | 19/05/2017 |
Pleasant solo lunch spot on route home from Pembrokeshire. Went 65m east of trig to ensure I had high point. Second ascent. Approached from Baglan in North and on paths all the way, initially waymarked Welsh Coastal path then small obvious footpath to trig. Lovely views across to the coast.sunshine. | Denise | 23/09/2016 |
From Cwmavon. A nightmare of disappearing and blocked paths, bracken, brambles and gorse. Eventually used PROW through Nant-y-clais despite unwelcoming signs and farm dog. Easy once onto the forestry tracks, with just a bit more gorse and shrubs to make the search for the summit tricky. | welshyboyo | 16/08/2016 |
From Baglan, overcast, brief shower, windy, clear to 225m, then clag and mist. | iangalbraith | 04/07/2016 |
From Baglan. Nice views over Port Talbot. | twg27 | 27/06/2016 |
From Blaen-Baglan. Good parking. | jimbloomer | 27/05/2016 |
Parked in outskirts of Baglan to N of summit where path meets road (plenty of space), and took an easy walk to the top. Lovely views of Port Talbot, which actually looked attractive in the spring sunshine. | Cas-gwent | 26/04/2016 |
Hard to believe trig is not the high point. But walked east towards point marked by hill-bagging, pleased I did as identified by survey as being .22m higher than trig. Now overgrown with deciduous shrubs and saplings. Parked in Smallwood Road and headed for Wales Coast Path via tortuous route from Pant-yr-Arian Lane. Smashing views all round, most poignant of all to the south over Port Talbot Steelworks currently under threat of closure. Here's hoping it can be saved for the sake of the area and the country. | mntainman | 12/04/2016 |
With Steve | GinaSmith | 12/04/2016 |
After camping at the Mountain Center at Bryn Bettws lodge, parked on the SW fringes of Cwmafan 776918. Walked NW on a drive and Right of way on the west side of a stream, which degenerated into a trash through the wood. Then went west at a farm to forest tracks which spiral up to the nice top. Great views of the works of man. Continued on the coastal path down to a path that contours the east side of the hill and joins the road at a cemetery. A good walk but best done on a Sunday morning when the traffic noise will be at its lowest. | mindlessflogger | 12/03/2016 |
From Baglan. A nice stroll anticlockwise round the hill. Approached the top from the SE, but found the shorter route back from the trig to the NW. | jenx | 18/11/2015 |
With Jenx, from farm parking nr Baglan, lots of space. Welsh coastal path to near high point at gate, take track to left about 50m short of this and look for track leading off direct to trig. Local's party rubbish strewn around, good views. | nordicstar | 18/11/2015 |
Parked at blaen baglan. Loads of room. First of 5 marilyns today.. just about the most enjoyable. Which doesnt say much for the others. Wet wild and with virtually no view. I found the trig easy enough but after a 5rample around in pouring rain i didnt bother spending more than a couple of mins looking for the exact top. My knees were higher than it -so given the conditions that'll do me. | stig_nest | 14/11/2015 |
Good parking at 760926 then good tracks to the SW of the summit before locating a small path to the trig point. With GB. | bolton | 29/07/2015 |
Parking area by farm at SS75977 92605 – Followed Wales Coast Path to 759914 – Turned left up track for about 200m & then took narrow path through heather & bracken to the trig point and nearby summit. (PM) | gerrybowes | 29/07/2015 |
Parked at Blaen-Baglan farm, tracks all the way. Very wet in the rain looking for the summit. | tim747 | 08/07/2015 |
Follow on from Foel Fynyddau, from NW and coastal path | dicky | 25/05/2015 |
From Port Talbot, nice top considering the start point. | rhalstead | 03/04/2015 |
From Baglan. Route and write-up (including the trials of locating the summit feature!) at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/three-mynydds-mynyddau-and-foel.html | Gayle | 22/03/2015 |
SOTA walk - operated ham radio from summit. Started out by farm at SS 759926. | G4OBK (Phil) | 23/01/2015 |
6/6 if approaching from brynbryddan watch out for 3 dogs in farm! not well marked the tracks at all. | Fergalh | 17/12/2014 |
Followed track and path from bend in minor road to the north. Look at 1:25000 map for final path to summit. | Lionel Bidwell | 23/04/2014 |
With Val. From Aberavon. Coastal path then track and path to TP. Summit found using GPS | mike.hoult | 07/12/2013 |
With Mike | Val Deisler | 07/12/2013 |
Ran up from Cwmafan before going on to Foel Fynyddau. The contrast between the industrial and rural is very striking. Best view of a steelworks anywhere! | huwthomas | 07/09/2013 |
Walked up from Cwmafan mainly on public paths, just final 250m were there seems to be no public access, although several dog walkers around, so doesn't seem to be a problem. | jonglew | 27/07/2013 |
With Iain Brown from Baglan. Spiralled around to the top. | Eddie | 10/07/2013 |
On a running loop from Port Talbot | MattJTownsend | 15/06/2013 |
From Brynbyddan. A fine footpath slanted up woodland, above a now quiet valley but with some industrial remains, to join the Baglan Woodland Trails. Fine view over Nedd M4 bridge. Open rides and a cleared area with Stonechats and Meadow Pipits to an open summit with fascinating views of post(mostly)-industrial wastelands, but also the sea, Nedd river and mountains to N. Back similar way but all along the valley from the Marilyn-defining col. Redstarts here. A nice walk essentially out of Port Talbot. | pwheeler | 25/04/2012 |
A straighforward though initially steep climb from Port Talbot town centre, which took exactly an hour from the railway station. The key to the ascent is to find the underpass beneath the M4 off the roundabout just north of the civic centre. | johnabutler2 | 07/03/2011 |
Parked at Abervon and walked up Foel Fynyddau first before approaching this one from NW. Lost path to summitt for last 200 meters but rediscovered it one visiting the trig. Steep decent to SE. Most snow now gone. | Father Ted | 28/12/2010 |
Easy walk up from west. Path is waymarked to wood but there is a tricky short zig zag half way up. | chriswatson | 07/11/2010 |
From Brynbryddan, good track to start then steep tree slopes until uppermost track reached. Quite pleasant after that. | Aye Jimmy | 04/09/2010 |
From car at 760926 (16:05) along track to hill and anticlockwise up W and S sides, ending up on SE ridge. Trees cleared on summit. Descended NW ridge then S and SW back to path. Good weather. Finish 17:10 | dbb | 26/03/2010 |

With: hb sb; Walked up track from the minor road to the south then cut up to the summit. Returned by the same route. | Ian Baines | 27/07/2009 |
With: ib sb; | Helen Baines | 27/07/2009 |
From ENE starting at footpath to north of Pant Cemetry on road to Dinas House but then detour due to blocked path to left of DH then R across pony paddock, bear right thro blue bell wood, then head top left of next pony/horse field under wire then along | Dugswell2 | 10/05/2009 |
Walked from A48 lay-by. Steep through thickly planted trees until reaching forestry track. Same way down. Not the most sensible route but good fun. | Dusty | 25/04/2009 |
Solo | 1921 | 18/03/2009 |
walked from aberavon using a steep footpath leading to the much wider circular path around mynydd dinas nice views of swansea bay from the trig pillar | hodder | 12/11/2008 |
Tricky finding paths from NNE. Lots of vegetation and new tracks in places. Confusing. | destaylor | 09/09/2008 |
Make sure you take the path on the lower slopes. I didn't and the combination of brambles and bracken was awful. | clivevilla | 29/08/2008 |
part sprayed green now had work from the SE corner of the ridge | Rhayader_wander | 12/09/2007 |
Trig revisit. Flattish heather summit, fine view. | RHW | 05/11/2006 |
Trig point still rubbish free. Well done John Edwards. Not certain his idea of good views is correct. | andrew brown | 30/09/2006 |
White trig (S 2057) with superb views of M4, Swansea and the Mumbles, not to mention Port Talbot. Brought down a whole carrier bag full of discarded cans and plastic bottles from the summit so keep it tidy - or else! | signyred | 18/07/2006 |
Revisit 30/11/20 with Pauline … WCP run | milejunkie | 01/05/2005 |
Parked at Baglan and walked via the minor road to Blaen-Baglan farm. From here it was an easy stroll via the tracks and paths to the top. The trees had long since gone at the top so views could have been had if the cloud had not been so low. | garyhoney | 04/09/2004 |
petey | 19/08/2004 | |
Galltywenallt | 09/11/2002 | |
This hill is very prominent when viewed from the M4. We started in Baglan and followed paths that seemed to go around the hill twice to the top.
Lovely views over Port Talbot & Swansea bay | ChinnockC | 21/10/2002 |
W Darren. Climbed 2 marilyns near Neath then as the sun came out we went rock climbing on Three Cliffs at Gower(Arch Slab & Scavanger) then later another nearby marilyn. | Chris Pearson | 22/04/2000 |
On farm tracks and small path to heathery summit cleared of trees. Heron flew off towards Port Talbot steel works! Rare OS error. height printed as 528m. | arranc | 06/03/1999 |
Date is first visit. Notes from later...fair hill, expansive urban view. tk from rd @ farm to N @ 759926 | RHW | 19/12/1998 |
