| 16-mile round trip from Wooler. The climb from Langleeford is about 2 miles and is very tough going in winter conditions. <10m visibility, ice-covered, ankle-deep bogs the whole way to the summit. I slipped over a few times (should have been wearing spikes). On the steep descent the wind blew hail and rain into my face. | After 4 intense days, Day 5 was no different. Got up early in the morning, and headed off too Langleeford. A very long day, taking around 7 hours doing The Cheviot and it's established Horseshoe. Hedgehope Hill was the hardest and best, but that was probably because I had to head up that Mountain first before following the Horseshoe. Some scree by Cairn Hill, and some fog on only The Cheviot while I was up there. Still, some amazing views seeing Lindisfarne, the North Sea and lots of Scotland as well. | On the first day of a long weekend visit to Haggerston Castle Caravan Park, Northumberland I headed back over the border for some of the Cheviot Hills. Starting at Cocklawfoot I went up Windy Gyle (619m) a Donald, with along a stone pitched path within the Northumberland National Park and up to Cairn Hill West Top (743m) a Donald Top, more a bump on the way up to The Cheviot, but classified as a hill, since it right on the border. By this point the overcast but dry weather had been replaced with mist and no visibility for the final ascent up a stone flagged path to the Cheviot (815m), a Marilyn. | Late in the day (17:30 set off) so had to be run! A rather intimidating single track road through the Harthope Valley was probably the biggest obstacle... A well-defined path leads out over Scald Hill and then clearly on to The Cheviot summit- the penultimate section (before joining the paved section) is reasonably steep. The flatness of the summit plateau obscures much of the view, and with the setting sun not much was seen! | After bagging Broadhope and Preston hills. We attempted to head up Cheviot from Goldscleugh farm but missed the path after taking a detour to avoid cattle that were spooked by the dog. Ended up heather bashing up the side with no distinct pathways. As such we drifted too far eastwards to Woolhope Crag. In the fog we were a little disorientated and thought we had gone as far as the Scald Hill/Cheviot shoulder but dismissed that as impossible because we could make out the head of a valley in the mist. By this time it was after 5pm and we were feeling tired from all the uphill heather bashing we had been doing. So we followed the contour around to where the Cheviot meets Scald Hill and descended via Scald. | Having already stood on top of Hedgehope Hill I set off across the bog fest that is towards Comb Fell. It’s always wet up here, regardless of the season. I managed to make decent progress , losing my left shoe twice to the sticky bog. I continued West with the wind still in my face. I reached the foot of Cairn Hill and took a small lunch break before continuing the route. I quickly reached the top and found the paved path of the Pennine Way towards The Cheviot.
