Parked at Cary Burn Bridge. Cold Law, Broadhope Hill, Scald Hill, The Cheviot, Cairn Hill, Comb Fell, Hedgehope Hill. Big 3 hills stayed in the clouds all day. Ground very wet so slow going.tsharp12/04/2024

Obviously iconic North Pennines hill which I've been wanting to get up for about 16 years now. Enjoyed a lovely bright sunny day to wander on up alongside Alan Caine then, though the wind was still bitterly cold at the summit so not a place to linger any longer than necessary.Alex C24/03/2024
16-mile round trip from Wooler. The climb from Langleeford is about 2 miles and is very tough going in winter conditions. <10m visibility, ice-covered, ankle-deep bogs the whole way to the summit. I slipped over a few times (should have been wearing spikes). On the steep descent the wind blew hail and rain into my face. Probably the most treacherous county top yet.hillbagger9110/01/2024

Plenty parking near Harthope valley public road end. Followed road for 200-300m then followed Permissive Path over Scald Hill to large summit area with trig. The last of the English Historic County Tops! Cycled up from Wooler and then walked up over Scald Hill. Chatted with a guy just finishing the Pennine Way. The return along Harthope Burn a bit of a slog.pclyndes02/06/2023
The Cheviot Group from Langleeford. A clockwise route around the dale head. Nice and dry peat underfoot, but still a big and tiring round, especially due to the bash through the heather out and back to new top for me, Great Standrop. The remainder all being revisits, Langlee Crags, Hedgehope Hill, Comb Fell, Cairn Hill, Cairn Hill West Top, Auchope Cairn, and finally back over the flagstones to The Cheviot. Windy but warm in the sun. 24km with 1300m ascent, taking me 7h 40m.silverwolf_alan27/05/2023

After 4 intense days, Day 5 was no different. Got up early in the morning, and headed off too Langleeford. A very long day, taking around 7 hours doing The Cheviot and it's established Horseshoe. Hedgehope Hill was the hardest and best, but that was probably because I had to head up that Mountain first before following the Horseshoe. Some scree by Cairn Hill, and some fog on only The Cheviot while I was up there. Still, some amazing views seeing Lindisfarne, the North Sea and lots of Scotland as well. Very dominant County Top!DavidHiner29/08/2022

Descended via The Cheviot North East Top and Scald Hill. Wide grassy path back down to Langleeford. No views as summits covered in low cloud.Beeliner03/05/2022

Langleeford (parking area) > Hawsen Burn > Scald Hill > The Cheviot > Cairn Hill > Comb Fell > Hegehope Hill > Long Crags > Housey Crags > Langleeford (parking area). Beautiful spring day, bit hazy but light winds and a nice temperature. This is a route for the purist, even following a dry spell, Comb Fell is a horror show from the top of the Harthope Valley to you start the accent of Headgehope. Hard work for the determine only.johnkaysleftleg23/03/2022

Check date 25/09 to 02/10 Ascended for the second time but first since I started logging Marilyn's From Hethpool via College Burn - and Scotsman Cairn.briandavies29/09/2021
On the first day of a long weekend visit to Haggerston Castle Caravan Park, Northumberland I headed back over the border for some of the Cheviot Hills. Starting at Cocklawfoot I went up Windy Gyle (619m) a Donald, with along a stone pitched path within the Northumberland National Park and up to Cairn Hill West Top (743m) a Donald Top, more a bump on the way up to The Cheviot, but classified as a hill, since it right on the border. By this point the overcast but dry weather had been replaced with mist and no visibility for the final ascent up a stone flagged path to the Cheviot (815m), a Marilyn. I then retraced my steps back to Cairn Hill West Top and then down Auchope Rigg, with a wee stop at the shelter, 07:10hrs all in.chillyman810/09/2021

Late in the day (17:30 set off) so had to be run! A rather intimidating single track road through the Harthope Valley was probably the biggest obstacle... A well-defined path leads out over Scald Hill and then clearly on to The Cheviot summit- the penultimate section (before joining the paved section) is reasonably steep. The flatness of the summit plateau obscures much of the view, and with the setting sun not much was seen! However, the dark, boggy landscape was close to my native Peak District so all feelings of attachment were not lost!hjb6828/08/2021

Exactly the same route that Man of Kernow did, including cutting the corner off on the way back going directly back to Mounthooly by the path that is obvious on the way back but not on the way up. Mist and steady drizzle started from Auchope Cairn so no views from the Cheviot. Typical British midsummer day.Manuel Pereda16/06/2021
From Mounthooly, with a College Valley permit. Took the bridleway up to the head of the valley, then up to the border ridge. Then east to the refuge hut, up steeply to the summit of Auchope, then onto Pt.743m on Cairn Hill and to the 777m summit. Then followed the flagstone trail to the summit of The Cheviot. Returned the same way, but descended on a track into the College Valley before the refuge hut. With ALT. 14.9km, with 650m of ascent.Man of Kernow115/06/2021

Langleeford (ample parking) > Cheviot > Comb Fell > Hedgehope > Langlee Crags > Langleeford. Swamp fest in the dip between Cheviot and Comb Fell so might be best attempted after a period of dry weather (unless you're into that sort of thing).JohnR14/09/2020

Then along the PW to Cairn Hill West Top, Cairn Hill, The Cheviot (Skiddaw visible from the summit), Auchope Cairn, Birnie Brae, The Schil (best peak of the day) and Black Hag. Then left PW to follow the ridge SW down to Sourhope visiting The Curr, Blackdean Curr (beware getting on the wrong side of the electric fence for the summit) and White Law. Third top on a twelve mile walk starting from Harthope valley taking in two Dewey's and two county tops. The route was Broadhope hill, Preston hill, The Cheviot, Hangingstone hill and returning via Langleeford. I would not recommend this return in wet weather as it involves many crossing's of Harthope burn if done again I would return over Scald hill and then drop down to the tarmacked road.WAYNE ROWLETT18/11/2019
We did this the hard way, having parked in the wrong car park, adding on an extra 4 miles to the planned 8 mile walk! Also climbed Cold Law first by the steepest route. Gorgeous September day on the ascent. Blowing a Hooley at the top and Vinny got white finger, so we confirm it’s 10 degrees colder at the top and don’t go on a windy day. Not bad views on the descent. Pleased with our achievement given we are knocking on the door of our 6th decade!SueVinny22/09/2019

Fourth time up The Cheviot. Same route up as previous ascents but extended along the Pennine Way to bag Cairn Hill (both tops) and Auchope Cairn. Had intended to take in Combe Fell and Hedgehope as a circular but it was too hot (high 20s) so ended up following the infant Harthope Burn to Langleeford Hope then the track along the valley floor to the car. Started up at 07.20 to try and avoid the heat. Strong sun all dy, slightly hazy. Walked alone.Skip28/06/2018

After bagging Broadhope and Preston hills. We attempted to head up Cheviot from Goldscleugh farm but missed the path after taking a detour to avoid cattle that were spooked by the dog. Ended up heather bashing up the side with no distinct pathways. As such we drifted too far eastwards to Woolhope Crag. In the fog we were a little disorientated and thought we had gone as far as the Scald Hill/Cheviot shoulder but dismissed that as impossible because we could make out the head of a valley in the mist. By this time it was after 5pm and we were feeling tired from all the uphill heather bashing we had been doing. So we followed the contour around to where the Cheviot meets Scald Hill and descended via Scald. Was an interesting route, and we are making plans to return to ascend Cheviot from that direction.NorthernWayfarer31/05/2018

After yesterday's sodden climb up Burnhope Seat, this was glorious. Second day of a 3 day wildcamping trip from Wooler to Hownam. Climbed from camp on Long Crags via Hedgehope Hill and Coomb Fell. Solo. Parked just before the end of the road at Langleeford. Used the path to the Cheviot. There was in fact a track as well close by the path in the lower stretches. At parts higher up heather had been cut on the sides of the path which had become very boggy. This allowed a drier route. I reached Scald Hill. The path was becoming very boggy indeed. The summit plateau of the Cheviot is extremely boggy and a path of stone slabs has been laid down. I reached the summit of the Cheviot where there is a trig point sitting on a concrete plinth. I continued to Cairn Hill, Comb Fell, Hedgehope Hill, and down to Langleeford. Dry and mild.pwbellarby12/10/2008

From near end of raod at Langleeford with Shaky & Smithy. Hills were clagged over at start but thankfully cleared as we got higher. Crossed the Harthope Burn & followed the obvious line up Hedgehope Hill. Continued over Comb Fell round to Cairn Hill. Quick detour out to the W top & Auchope Cairn using the Pennine Way which was shameless bagging - neither are more than bumps. However, it did allow time for the mist to rise properly off the Cheviot for, by the time we got round there, a view of sorts had appeared. Everything surprisingly dry. Walked up valley from Langleeford to gain ridge and three subsidiary summits. Misty and extremely boggy on top. Trigpoint on a plinth was an island. Just one day of a week described by my companion as 'the coldest, wettest, most miserable Easter he could ever remember...'!Aye Jimmy30/03/1991
With Rick. Parked up in Langlee ford, up Hausen Burn and over the shoulder into valley at bottom of Cheviot, up Cheviot via farm at Goldscloigh. Over the back of Fawcett Shank forest and up College burn valley, sun very hot with snow making it look alpine. Up to Auchope cairn and pee'd across fence into Scotland. On the Pennine Way. Down across Scald Hill. About 20 miles.Mark T30/05/1990

Last tough 29 mile day of PW with Mark. including this diversion through quagmire following new fence from West Cairn Hill where sacks wee left. No flagstones in those days just proper bogs gave Cheviot a fearsome reputation. Don't wear anything white, or new (or your own).Chris Pearson28/09/1984

Having already stood on top of Hedgehope Hill I set off across the bog fest that is towards Comb Fell. It’s always wet up here, regardless of the season. I managed to make decent progress , losing my left shoe twice to the sticky bog. I continued West with the wind still in my face. I reached the foot of Cairn Hill and took a small lunch break before continuing the route. I quickly reached the top and found the paved path of the Pennine Way towards The Cheviot. It had taken almost 3 1/2 hours and nearly 8 miles completed.JamesJonesblank
