Parked in lay-by NW of Kittythirst Cottage. Up forest track through Deadwater and Rushy Knowe. Much of the forest is currently being felled. Onto snowy heather to the summit of Peel Fell then more snowy heather and peat hag to Mid Fell, finding a narrow path for the final half-kilometre. Path then service road to Deadwater Fell before descent back to car via service track and forest roads.summitter06/12/2023
Parked at Kielder castle car park for £5 all day and took the Orange route up to Deadwater fell, then continued on a boggy path over Mid fell to Peel fell, Continuing on to Hartshorn pike to visit Carlin tooth. I returned via Wheelrig head on forest roads to Myredykes and finally a road stomp back to the car. Nineteen and half mile in Seven hours.WAYNE ROWLETT30/09/2023

Solo 1st of 2 walks. Clockwise circuit to Deadwater Fell. Good views on forestry track since large areas felled. From summit could see Solway Firth, murky eastwards though.Nick Canute18/09/2022
As JohnR, same route, same impression. There are fence posts all the way from Peel Fell over Mid Fell to Deadwater Fell, though there are few in the col btw here and Deadwater Fell. The (former) fence is not shown on OL42. Had snack just before the summit, on top of the crags at Jenny Storie's stone- a much nicer spot- and view.pwheeler07/09/2022

Parking in the lay-by 200m N of Kittythirst Cottage. On forest roads to the border at Rushy Knowe then followed the border footpath (just on the Scottish side) > Peel Fell. Continued via Mid Fell > Deadwater Fell. Feint paths all the way, quite boggy in places but nothing too strenuous. Continued down the forest roads back to the parking.JohnR24/10/2021

By & large used jonglew's route. Pleasant look out. Grassy paths between hills are certainly helpful (really ease the going).ger19/06/2021
Parked in layby just North of Kittythirst Cottage. Up the forestry track to Rushy Knowe, then by Kielder Stane waymarked path along border.Peter_W_Mitchell 17/06/2021
I parked in the lay-by just South of Deadwater farm and set off onto the forestry track adjacent to the Deadwater burn. Its an excellent track for a 2 miles which led me to the foot of Peel Fell. The last two hundred metres leaves the stone track to become more grassy. Despite the recent rain the track is mostly dry and easy going. Theres a short scramble through the fallen forestry debris before a steep slog up the final half mile. Its mostly soft heather and other vegetation and its tough going. At 590mts the ridge is reached and its an easy if wetter last few hundred metres to reach the cairn. Theres no trig point here, just a pile of stone and pieces of rusting metal. Its crazy windy so after the obligatory photo Im heading downhill via the same route. I was back to the car in less then two hours, happy with my efforts.JamesJones26/03/2021

Parked in layby near Kittyhirst Cottage at NY 608 964. Up forest roads to the border at Rushy Knowe, then up small path along border to Peel Fell, over heather and occasional tracks to Mid Fell and then a wet track to Deadwater Fell. Good views from Peel and Deadwater Fell. Down forest roads to public road at NY 622 945. Returned to car along Bundle and go to Kielder Stone walk, cutting through the trees by a somewhat overgrown ride to emerge at the layby. 16km with 500m ascent in 4h40m. (S)silveracorn_alan08/07/2020
This being a local Marilyn to me, its about the 4th time I've been up here in about 30 years. Since the last time the paths have all changed with a lot more mountain biking trails (you could now do this by a walk/mountain bike combo if you are so inclined). Parked at Kielder Castle and followed the Deadwater Fell (orange with white arrow signs) to the top of Deadwater Fell. Then followed the Kielder Stanes route across the ridge from Deadwater Fell, picking up the path at the edge of the fence onto the ridge and following the stakes/ signs, there is a path all the way although there's a bit of bog hopping in parts. (Note this whole route used to be marked all the way from the Kielder Castle car park but it isn't any more), the first part is replaced with the Deadwater Fell signs however the waymarkers still exist on the Fell. From the summit followed the Kielder Stanes route (marked on the 1:25000 OL map but not on the 1:50000 (at least not on my version) at first down along the BordeJulieB04/01/2020

Usual parking - dirt layby N of Kittythirst Cott (NY 6085 9641). Good forest road to Rushy Knowe, could have easily driven it, then waymarked FP to the top. Continued on to Mid and Deadwater Fells. Returned to start from Deadwater on comms site access road to NY 6212 9566, whence continued on to meet my outward track at NY 6087 9699. All in all, a very civilized 9 miles.jonglew09/09/2019
From layby north of Kittyhirst Cottage as others. At end of track at Rushy Knowe the trees are felled and theres a faint but easy path diagonally uphill to boundary wall. Theres a sign at the wall for this path so hopefully it will be preserved when new trees are planted. Path to summit is on Scottush side. Peel Fell, Mid Fell, Deadwater Fell. Faint path across moor.ijpowell01/08/2019
Round of 3 from layby at start of foresty road just north of Kittythirst cottage. Forest roads to Rushy Knowe then path beside wall up to Peel Fell. Then followed path beside old metal fence posts south eastish before they dog legged to the summit of Mid Fell. Path then to Deadwater Fell and return along forest roads.mart079701/07/2019

Bike up forest track to Rushy Knowe then on foot - much easier going than expected with a trodden line to follow. Recorded route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.com/2019/04/easter-monday-22-april-peel-fell.htmlGayle22/04/2019
From Deadwater no timber stacks remain but fostery signage still on display. NE track from 617987 goes to within 100m on open ground which is tussock grass & heather with foot swallowing holes.rogreeves18/04/2019
3rd of 4 Marilyns today. Bike from 608964. Lots of forestry work so looks different to map. Left bikes at 621985 but forestry forced us to take cross country route to top which was very hard underfoot. Able to come back on decent path to Rishy Knowe. This area is felled. With GNtrimarc227/03/2019

From SE of Deadwater via forest tracks to Rushy Knowe. Path up SW ridge now accessible, although there is still a lot of timber to be trucked out.PGCE26/12/2018
From SE of Deadwater via forest tracks to Rushy Knowe. Intended to follow path up SW ridge, but due to forestry work had to divert via via forest track at 622989. Direct route to summit is very tussocky and slow. On return used ridge path to edge of forest then walked east along its northern edge to regain the forest track.Winterfloodian19/10/2018
Dog leg forestry track route from SE of Deadwater to Rushy Knowe then marked path up SW ridge. A more direct route back from Rushy Knowe to Deadwater worked out badly. The grass is long, the ground is uneven, there are barbed fences and the RoW shown on the map has no physical presence whatsoever.Topographer5724/09/2018
Parked at 608964 and walked up forest road to the East of Deadwater Burn. At road end 614989 an obvious track through trees leads to open hill and waymarked path up the Scottish side of the old border wall. Signs say Kielder Stane Walk. Very windy at summit with wet driving drizzle so quickly back down to the shelter of the trees. 2.25 hours, 9.1k .NormanW18/09/2018
Parked opposite end of track where it meets road at NY608964. Cycled along tracks to NY617987. Continued East up track to nearest edge of forest plantation. Then direct route through trees and onwards to top across horrendous tussocky, heathery, boggy sh1t.raffemeister16/09/2018

From Kittythirst. It's really easy to follow the forest road straight up the hill, then continue round the right angled bend all the way to a turning area. Continue straight on a grassy track, which runs out in a short section of forestry, but fear not, there is an easy path through the trees. The deadfall at the end is rotting nicely and easy to cross. There's a clear but narrow path along the border wall all the way up the hill, and it's fairly easy going even across the summit bogs. Good views and an effective place for a national border. Hills and bogs would keep the Scots out and the English in and vice versa.Gill06/10/2017

From pull in by D/w farm. A simple enough start.. top of Forestry I took the ride after the Master Grain ride which was fine until I emerged on the open fell. Cue thigh deep heather and grass. I laboured over to the border where a path follows the row of old posts. Top is pretty squelchy but not half as bad as feared. 90mins from car to cairn. Was going to return the same way but talked myself into visiting the next two tops too instead.stig_nest13/09/2017

Typical sunny day in Kielder... aka I was soaked just crossing the road to the start of the track near Kittythirst Cottage (convenient free parking opposite entrance to track). A lot of forestry work was happening - they are putting up a deer fence along the forest track. The main path heads back towards Kielder. Once clear of the trees I realised I was heading the wrong way. I also ended up at the quarry near Long Crag... after taking another wrong path. Eventually found a path that led to the one I needed to be on that was hidden by forestry machinery. Anyone else doing this route... you need to take the first left and it is NOT the main path. The weather brightened and things were great until Rushy Knowe, on the Scottish side of the border, they are felling and stripping trees close to the path. There is also a fallen tree blocking the path that is difficult to maneuver around or over. After that things are fine if not a little steep to the top even in high winds (guessing 50mph guNorthernWayfarer20/02/2017
Convenient parking in layby opposite forestry road NW of Kittythirst Cottage (NY 60832 96437). 2.7 mile route planned straight up and return by same route. Slight detour on ascent by incorrectly sticking to main path and heading for Deadwater Fell, having been seduced by the golf ball/radio station visible off to the right. Error soon corrected returning to planned track by taking alternative forest track heading NE. Returned planned ascent route though do have mixed feelings about not picking off the Dewey Deadwater Fell and the sub-Dewey Mid Fell. But here to do Marilyns and wanted to give myself the chance to complete two remaining Marilyns despite the late start and short daylight hours.mntainman19/01/2017

From there descended down the south-west slope of the hill (this route is not for the faint hearted or for anyone that likes their ankles) to the forest picking up the forestry tracks and skirting round the west of Deadwater Fell back to Kielder.Stormcrow01/10/2016
From track end near Kittythirst all the way to Deadwater Fell and its paraphernalia. From there its was heather bashing to Mid Fell and on to Peel Fell. There is a half decent path down following the border until the track is picked up again. Pleasant walk in good weather.SS17/09/2016

Followed previous advice and parked in layby at NY60836 96423 and then tried to head south and into field and up footpath. Backtracked to parking spot and went up the far more sensible route of the forest track, gaining distance and height easily. When the track swings left and over the river take the second left. The path gets fainter and fainter but eventually pops out of the trees at NY 62340 98976. From there its a straightforward hack up to the top.Father Ted17/04/2016

Deadwater Fell, Mid Fell and Peel Fell. Parked in the layby by Kittyhurst Cottage and went up the forestry tracks to Deadwater Fell. They are easy to follow and match the OS map exactly. From there to Mid Fell and then the weather came in. Luckily there are old metal fence posts marking the way to Peel Fell but I didn't fancy descending off piste so retraced my steps. Nearly 4 hours round trip.clivevilla23/10/2015
Parked at NY 60832 96429. Space for half a dozen cars. Followed forest tracks and eventually a black bike run (Skellys Riggin) to the top of Deadwater Fell.Followed fence on right hand side of track down and crossed the continuation of the track and again followed path across Deadwater Moor to Mid Fell. Continued following path to top of Peel Fell. Then down following the border and eventually through forest back onto track. Followed track back to carpark. Track and path all the way. A bit cold and a bit sqelshy. A good walk.MikeM11/10/2015

Popped this one off with Brian on our way to Kielder Lake, instead of going to the track end and up the wall dividing England and Scotland where I said there would be a good track, Brian insisted we take the last right turning up a track to the fell side as a more direct route. Once broken through the forest it was a slog through the tussocks and bracken to gain the small escarpment and through the peat bog to the summit cairn. Not enjoyable at all. Descended the much simpler wall/post route down where we should have ascended. Regained forest track simply.Mark T26/05/2015

Half a dozen of us here to celebrate Rick and Jen's final English Marilyn - and Rick's 1200th P100 - double chant duly performed! I drove in from NW on decent forest road (for 2 bonus P30s) leaving a single tussocky half-hour mile to the summit. Alan Dawson GPSing the summit - looking like the cairn, by a small margin from the W summit.RHW09/11/2014
Jen and my final English Marilyn, and my 1200 P100. With Rob W, Charles E, Alan D, Martin R and Lucy F. Usual layby at Kittyhirst, took the track keeping to the left and the burn line. Broke out the trees at end of track to find a good path with yellow markers now set up the wall line starting down in the cleared forest area. This path continues right round to Deadwater and is very straightforward. Not the struggle others have reported. Straightforward ascent in sunny weather over Deadwater Fell. Descended to visit the Kielder Stone - a remote and pleasant spot.JohnW08/09/2003

My last Marilyn in England. In shorts for third day. On forest tracks to top of Deadwater Fell at 10.30. Dry well made path across the moor. Pile of stones at Mid Fell. 11.00. Another 1 1/2 miles past Raven's Cross to the top - neat cairn on upsurge in moor. 11.30. Surprised to find a marshall for a fell race at the summit. He took my photograph.arranc06/08/2000

Weekend cycling the Reivers Way with Lesley & Rob from Newcastle to Carlisle with o/night at Bellingham YH. I left the others to carry on whilst I hid my bike and did a circuit over Deadwater Fell and Peel Fell then cycled the remaining 40 miles to Carlisle to rejoin the others (staying in Uni rooms -used as YH in summer)Chris Pearson30/08/1998
