From Honister Pass. W/TH & Teddy. The warning in Wainwright is correct re the descent to Beck Head (Great Gable 22) - avoid the scree runs on the west side if possible, but the path down the angle of the west & north faces is difficult to locate in mist. We ended up on the worn out scree runs, so not sure what the other path is like.Sedge01/03/2023

11.1 mile walk from Honister Pass. Followed good path towards Green Gable with a brief diversion onto Brandreth's Summit then followed path onto Green Gable, then followed horrible scree-covered path down to Windy Gap col. From here ascending Great Gable over rocks and boulders to summit. Had the top to ourselves, it was only about 9.30am though. From Great Gable we descended path back to Windy Gap and followed Moses's Trod towards Haystacks following trail near Seavey Knott to summit. From summit we followed main path by Little Round How and then followed hard-to-find trail onto Fleetwith Pike, descending back to Honister and car. 1186m ascent. Clear with high cloud cover, amazing views. Saw quite a lot of people on Haystacks, not many others elsewhere!DanTrig15/06/2021

Thick fog. Couldn't see anything from the summit. About 3m visibility on the top. Used map and compass to find path towards Kirk Fell but somehow got led astray possibly by a false cairn. I did pass a large overhanging rock that appeared to be supported by small rocks that people had put in... but that was the only distinguishing feature of the descent. Ended up on the descent from hell, found myself on a large boulder with a large drop and two shale runs either side (scree gone) knew I was going to slide but slide where? Couldn't see the bottom so didn't know if it was a sudden drop or not. Took a gamble with the left one and ended up in a boulder field then onto grass. Completely lost in the fog with nothing to take a baring. Heard some voices in the fog that guided me to the tarn at Beck Head where I could take a baring. I decided to abandon the rest of my walk and head back to Honister on Moses' Trod in the fog.NorthernWayfarer25/07/2017

Summit came quicker than expected. Started descent NW from cairn for Beck Head but foolishly followed two other goups descending. Joan, Peter, Ian & dogs. Camped on island on Sprinkling Tarn. A cold but calm night. Sun shone over the rim of Glaramara at 6.40am - A GLORIOUS MORNING - wonderful to be around. Set off 8.15am. On top of Great Gable 9 45am could see the Isle on Man very clearly and north of the Solway and nobody else in sight. An early lunch on Kirkfell. Ian rested and sunbathed at Black Sail Pass whilst the rest went up to the top of Pillar and back in 1 hour and 35 minutes. Then took traverse routes to Windy Gap. Peter & Joans legs weary. Troubles feet worn off. Arrived back at out island home at 5.15pm. Revived by hot chocolate and explored another tarn hidden above Aaron Crags. Some more sketching. Also July 1982 Great Gable from Wasdale Head (fairly large car journey over Wrynose & Hardknott & then down Wasdale) return via Styhead tarn (more swimming) and down Styhead Pass as a thunder storm approached. 6 hrs.PeteF05/08/1987

Leeds University Outdoor Activities Course at Dale Head, Duddon. Leading and teaching sixth-formers with Chris McAllistair. We took our group from Dale Head to Wasdale Head and set up camp. Another group did the same. At 18:30 Chris, one of the boys and I departed for Great Gable via SW ridge, then along the path to the col between Great Gable and Kirkfell, and followed the path to the summit, arriving at 19:50. We descended on the track to Sty Head Pass. At the top of the pass it became too dark to see properly. We missed the path at the top and did not find it again until someway down the pass. A large moon shone behind Great End. We arrived back at the camp at about 21:30.pwbellarby30/03/1961
