After our break we headed down on the very impressive ridge towards high crag. This was up and down but easy on the legs but the sun was a killer, upon reaching the summit and while I was chilling Bec asked a couple for some sun cream. Some stunning views into Ennerdale and across to Pillar and the impressive Pillar rock. After yet another rest and another food stop we made our way down the very very step ascent to the col just before Haystacks and cut down to Buttermere, by this time I was shattered but still had time to see the highland cows and take some pictures before heading back to the car completely exhausted. On our way to Keswick we hit bad traffic and on no miles in the car made for a nervous half hour. From the petrol station we headed home before going Guys on the MondayScotty 2 Hotty15/08/2020

Walking leader for 16th Harrogate Scouts Mountaineering Weekend. High Crag, High Stile & Red Pike ridge East to West above Buttermere to minimise effect of strong Easterly wind. This was good practice of steep ground work with the descent off of Red Pike. I supervised my own group and remotely supervised 2 others so had briefed leaders in advance of the steep ascent.higlett23/11/2019

5th summit of the day following Stuart Marshall's Buttermere marathon route. Had a bit of cramp between High Stile and High Crag, so stopped for a few minutes to take an electrolyte tablet and some water. No problem finding the top of this one. Descent was hellish though. Started with Fleetwith Pike having parked at the farm at the bottom, then on to Haystacks, High Crag and High Stile. Path down to Buttermere difficult wouldn't recommend. Would definitely do Haystacks and Fleetwith again but would come down via Scarth Gap. Took advantage of good weather on Good Friday and drove up to Buttermere. Seems the population of England had the same idea as the place was packed! Headed off on foot up to Bleaberry Tarn then up to Red Pike. From there south easterley to High Stile to High Crag and then onto a scramble up Haystacks. Lovely start to the day, sunny and warm. Did High Crag from Buttermere, Taking the short route, avoiding Seat (the Nuttalls walk 3.5) and then onto High Style, near the summit and eating lunch when the mist came down. What a contrast! Lots of cairns strewn about the summit. Onto Red Pike following directions given to us by frequent visitor that we met by the summit. Paths do appear which guide your direction. From the summit we had to use a compass to guide us NE, the route down. Mist thinned on the way down over red, slippey, crumbling red shale to let us see the outline of Dodd, which we climbed. Then a long, long tortuous and tedious descent, mainly on a superhighway paved with red rocks. Back to Gatesgarth farm CP. Walk distance 12.7 km, 7.9 miles by GPS (Nuttalls give walk as 7m) , 6 h 40mMalcvolm31/05/2013

On a cold, crisp January morning I drove to the shores of Buttermere (from where the High Stile range looks like a vertical wall) and parked opposite Gatesgarth Farm. Having crossed Gatesgarthdale Beck and Peggy’s Bridge, I started to ascend steeply – hardly a gentle beginning after nearly four months without my walking boots on. Hay Stacks loomed forbiddingly to the left; I turned off right before Scarth Gap Pass and therefore missed some of the worst scree on Seat. A final ascent of Gamlin End took me to the day’s first summit. The hills to the north were free of mist, but I barely saw Pillar all day.peter4lc09/01/2013

We went up via Sheepbone Rake today (AW High Crag pg. 6), a magnificent, mountaineering, little frequented route. In 1991, apart from a few yards, all scree and rubble could be avoided- even in the rake. Technically, a steep mountain walk- and in 1991, a welcome avoidance of the badly eroded route from Scarth Gap. With Pete, on a fine day, no cloud on summits. About 3 or 4 other visits, first 1975, by the standard routes along the main ridge. Marvellous mountain atmosphere and scenery.pwheeler08/09/1991
