Great way to spend your birthday. A fantastic day running Leg 2 of the Bob Graham with Brett and Mark. Cloudy throughout the day, with soft snow and some ice on the tops, visibility very poor, but not bad enough to need to take bearings. One missed top (Watson’s Dodd) so had to recip. Very tough section, out and back to Fairfield, wanted to give up! Jonesy ran out of water but decided not to mention this to us. 5hrs 41minutes for the leg, with a distance of 15.5 miles so not in the right ball park to take on the full challenge...yet. Cough head, great Dodd, Watson’s Dodd, stybarrow Dodd, raise, white side, helvellyn LM, Helvellyn, nethermost pike, dollywaggon pike, Fairfield, and seat sandal.Jim Baz17/11/2019

Part of Cumbrian 3 PeaksThursday02/06/2018
It was an early start from Glenridding. I parked for £3 in the Sports field and headed up the lane, before turning left to the path up to Birks. There were still Bluebells out and the views down to Ullswater were superb as there was a thin layer of mist in the valley. It was a slog to the summit of Birks before it became easier to St Sunday Crag. Nice to have it to myself on this summit and the views were stunning. I descended to Deepdale Hause and cut around Grisedale Tarn to the steep climb to Seat Sandal. The views West were great in the soft rather misty light all the main peaks were a dark silhouette against the milky sky. I headed north and straight up the wall to the cairn at the edge of the cliffs on Dollywaggon Pike. It was then an easy walk over Nethermost Pike and on to the summit of Helvellyn where I had 5 minutes on my own. I continued along Striding Edge which was much easier than I imagined with no difficulties to the summit of High Spying How.isabelle01/06/2018

Stayed at Patterdale YHA and tried to walk along Striding edge to Helvellyn but bottled it! The next day walked along Grisedale valley to Grisedale tarn and up to Helvellyn. However was very windy and the mist was coming down so instead of turning right to walk back to Patterdale along Swirral edge decided to walk straight as we could see a road ahead and thought we could walk back along the road to Patterdale. On arriving at Thirlmere reservoir discovered that the road back to Patterdale was longer than we thought so caught a bus to Ambleside where we were staying that night then a taxi back to Patterdale to pick the van up!Suzyj17/05/2015

County top no.54. Train from Cambridge to Windermere (via Birmingham and Oxenholme) then bus to Grasmere for overnight stay. Walking route: Grasmere > Great Tongue > Dollywagon Point > Helvellyn > Birk Side > Wythburn Church. Distance 8.1 miles; time 5:37; climb 3804 feet. I originally intended to bag Helvellyn along with Scafell Pike and O.M of Coniston last year but the weather was opressively hot and I only managed to bag those two. However, missing Helvellyn last year did nothing more than give me an excuse to go back again this year for on what was a wonderfully calm and sunny day (Temp 20 deg C). A truely geat day out in the fells and well worth the journey getting there.alan.65to7001/07/2014

Lovely morning in Glenridding, decided to take a differnet route up to Helvellyn so set off from the car park in north westerly direction up through Sticks Pass; was very lonely in Sticks Pass as I was alone apart from the sheep. Got to the head of the Pass then headed south along the pathway that went across the summits of Raise, White Side then up to a rather crowded summit of Helvellyn, with plenty more on their way up via Striding or Swirral Edge. Bit of a chilly breeze on the top of Helvellyn. Quick lunchbreak and then carried along southwards to Nethermost Pike and then Dollywaggon Pike, before heading down the hill to the shore of Grisedale Tarn. Hot and dry stroll down Grisedale Beck back to Patterdale for pint and an ice cream. Nice day out.GaryG21/05/2014

For jakes birthday, very snowy so went up Wirral edge after night in youth hostel, probably shouldn't have! No visibility and found some girls who were lost who jack and George saved. Very exciting though and pleased I went to the top.Jessicaelainesm02/01/2014
From Lower Man. A large cornice had formed between the two tops which was impressive to look at (from a safe distance!) A nice feeling for my first time on such a famous summit, even a hailstorm and zero visibility couldn't spoil the mood! My highest point to date. Onto Nethermost Pike.James McKnight28/12/2013

Walked to Clough Head via the Old Coach Road, then Great Dodd / Watson's Dodd / Stybarrow Dodd / Raise / Whiteside / Helvellyn / Catstye Cam (via Swirral edge)... then back to the camper via Helvellyn / Whyiteside / Raise and Hartside. The final steep descent to Douthwaitehead was tough on the knees!richoakes18/08/2013
Parked near the houses on an ordinary street in Glenridding. Not cold at the bottom but cold enough on top. The clouds came in faster than I had ever seen at that point... unreal. I bought and used walking poles for the first time. Good first impressions. Striding edge was ok - not as scary asI had heard. Tackled it Swirral edge first.Tony Bailes11/08/2013

There was a short pull over rocky ground to Helvellyn Lower Man, then an easy stroll to Helvellyn itself. I paused to look down Swirral Edge and concluded that I could probably have managed it, but sitting on the flat summit quite close to the edge and looking across to Striding Edge, I remained firmly of the opinion that it would be beyond me. It did not alter the fact that it was a magnificent sight. I take solace in this: I may not be able to tackle the most dangerous walks, but I am fit enough to climb to a point where I can look down on them.peter4lc19/07/2013

Another great family walk. We dragged dad up Helvellyn by the more difficult route, following the Ghyll, rather than on the track. That was Max's idea, but I went along with it. Dad was complaining all the way up. It was foggy on the summit of Helvellyn but, by the time we reached Nethermost Pike, the sun was out and we got some incredible views of Striding Edge. I can't wait to do that!Connor08/08/2010

Staying at Bowness. Solo. By bus to Stanah Cross. I walked up the Sticks Pass. At the top of the pass I followed the path south to reach Raise (683m), continuing over White Side, Lower Man to reach the summit of Helvellyn. There were a lot of people about - in the course of the day I must have passed about 200. Someone was checking in some people at the summit. so there must have been some sort of event on. Continued to Nethermost Pike, Dollywaggon Pike, Seat Sandal, Fairfield and down to Rydal. Just missed a bus so walked to Ambleside. The day was cold with a little rain. There was a little lying snow on the highest parts with a cornice on the NE face of Helvellyn.pwbellarby01/04/2006

Parked in Glenridding, then path by Braesteads to Grisedale Brow. Ice on Striding Edge with a fair wind and a lack of adequate crampons meant a turn-back was required. Swirral Edge was no better, and a return via Glenrdidding Common and the old mines was made; discretion being the better part of valour. A really pleasant winter walk nonetheless. Oops. Went winter climbing with Rick, full winter conditions. Set off from Greenside Youth Hostel and up to Red Tarn which was half frozed over. Started to do one of the gully climbs on Helvellyn North Face, swapped round into a more challenging one and topped out near the shelter to the amusement of some walkers resting there. Nipped up to the trig point and then down onto Striding Edge and down into Nethermost Cove. Climbing Nethermost Gully. At the top Rick led off from under a massive cornice across the snowfield at the top of the gully. I belayed from the top of the gully under the gig cornice. The cornice avalanched and took us both 740 feet back down the gully. Lickily I was not buried or Rick but I had smashed my left leg up, the foot was pointing backwards. With the help of some venture scouts that saw the avalanche from the cove below, my foot was twisted back round, ouch and MRT had to stretcher us off. Took about 5 hours for them to get to us, it was dark and a blizzard wasMark T18/02/1995

April 9th Saturday. A cold clear morning with fresh snow on the hill. Walked from Patterdale (Glenridding) up to Red Tarn where ice caused a stop to play (and lunch). We watched several groups snow and ice climbing in the corrie below Helvellyn. We ascended by Swirral Edge with the ice axe and rope being used on the final ascent through the cornice onto Helvellyn top. A glorious clear panorama and a good descent over Raise. We drove down Ullswater to join the M6 at Penrith on a beautiful evening. We stopped at Tebay for a grill.PeteF09/04/1988

Roger 12, Robert, Peter, Ian and Mummy. May 29th. Low cloud on Windermere promises a good day so we head for Patterdale and Shepherds Gate for Striding Edge - 2hrs steady climb to the gate. Not an attractive ascent for children. No problems on Striding Edge apart from too many people - the boys obviously enjoyed it although Peter wasn't happy on the loose stones on the final steep ascent onto Helvelyn. Beautifully clear from the top. Descent via Squirrel edge and the ridge down to Patterdale - a much better route than the ascent with lovely views down Ullswater. Everyone is tired at the car by 5.0pmPeteF29/05/1984

This was the first of numerous ascents, having walked from near Coniston to ascend via Fairfield from Grisedale Tarn. Ascent on 01/01/1980 was the most memorable as being the first to the summit for the New Year. Clear blue sky with snow underfoot on the ascent up Striding Edge. I was not alone on top for long. Descended via Swirral Edge and Catstye Cam. Also ascended in similar conditions New Year's Day 1986, ascending by Brown Cove and descending Striding Edge.JohnW16/04/1974

Around 8 visits, mostly in good visibility. Approached from most routes and all possible neighbouring summits- see their logs for more. This date was my first ascent, from Grisedale via Striding Edge, with Mike, John and Dirt. I had to be the red-blooded one and go through the cornice to get onto Swirral Edge for our return, but actually it was just following big bucket-steps in the snow.pwheeler28/03/1974

Staying at Monk Coniston (HF Guest House). From Wythburn with HF party. Walked by track via Comb Crags to Helvellyn. Snow immediately above tree line, thick by 1750'. Higher up hard packed ice completely covered everything. On top thick mist plus high winds blowing hailstones. Very painful. Met two walkers who preceded us. Wished to be directed to Thirlspot. Decided to join our main party for direct descent on route of ascent. Some of us wishing to try Striding Edge, if possible. We were all agreed that the conditions called for crampons and ice axes for a safe traverse. Regretfully we turn back and descend to Thirlspot by track. Good snow for running down.
