11.5 km loop in 3 hrs 30 mins from Hartsop. Small car park so get there early! Very beautiful hike taking in Hartsop Dodd, Raven Crag, Stony Cove Pike, Caudale Moor, Thornthwaite Crag, incl north top, Gray Crag. So very lucky with excellent weather. The hills were full.Nicky C07/01/2024
From Mardale Head, Rough Crag, High Street, Thornthwaite Crag, Stony Cove Pike, Hartsop Dodd and down to Hartsop. In the clag and rain almost from the outset - only a view of Brothers Water on the descent from Hartsop Dodd. Slushy snow on High Street. With Gillian. Many thanks to Harriet for the drop off at Mardale and the wet pickup from Hartsop.richard6902/01/2024
The Kentmere Horseshoe from Kentmere in an anticlockwise direction visiting 9 Wainwrights: Shipman Knots, Kentmere Pike, Harter Fell, Mardale Ill Bell, High Street, Thornthwaite Crag, Froswick. Ill Bell, and Yoke. A fine and partially sunny Boxing Day, with very fine snow showers. Certainly a nice change from heavy rain and storm force winds of recent days! 22km with 1200m ascent, taking 7h 40m.silverwolf_alan26/12/2023

Lunch halt (brief today in the cold blowing cloud). Good wall and the mighty pillar offering shelter. I had 2 small pieces of cardboard as sit mats which worked well as everything damp - what a difference from a month ago when we were up here in the heatwave. Today around the Kentmere Horseshoe with L- who had been in bed with flu a week ago so a good recovery!Chris Pearson02/10/2023
From Hartsop. 14.5 km, 930 m asc. Across Pasture Beck and S up the ridge to Hartsop Dodd, Stony Cove Pike and Caudale Moor summits. E down to Threshwaite Mouth and up the scree path to Thornthwaite Crag. Out and back to Mardale Ill Bell. Down the Gray Crag ridge and back by the Hayeswater track. Mist and rain, clearing. https://www.flickr.com/photos/samandjo/albums/72177720311203928SalmonJoe12/09/2023
From Froswick with L after a sweltering ascent in the heatwave of our favourite climb - 500m straight up the steep lonely east ridge of Ill Bell from Kentmere Reservoir. Lunch in the calm still sun here was delightful then High Street before wonderfully off-piste straight down through the crags at the Head of Kentmere to visit the source of the R Kent and its upper course where we skinny dipped to cool off in one of its many pools -delightful in this rare Sept heatwave.Chris Pearson05/09/2023

Time 6 1/2 hours. Walked with dog. Weather fine and sunny for first half of walk. Mist came down whilst on Harter Fell around 1.45pm. Remained dry though. Another Birthday walk with Bethany. It was quite chilly, even with the sun on, but perfect weather for walking. Starting from Hartsop we walked up Hayeswater Gill up to Hayeswater. Due to a very late start, we had some lunch here before starting up the very steep path up towards The Knott. Once on here, it was an easier ridge route to High Street and Thornthwaite Crag. The ridge gifted delightful veiws of Haweswater to the west, whilst looking south gave long distance veiws over Kentmere and Troutbeck. After decending from Thornthwaite Crag, we stopped and had a travel beer along Pasture Beck before completing the decend back to Hartsop. 5hrs: 12km; 765mByronHaywood03/05/2016

Up to Hartsop Dodd (steep) and then Stony Cove Pike. Great views of Windermere and Morecombe Bay today. Note, the summit is on the West side of the wall, not where the cairn is. Across to Thornwaite Crag and then along the ridge to Gray Crag. Note, the summit is just South of the Wall, not at the summit.tsharp06/09/2015

With Rick on a late start to do the Kentmere Round. Got new walking poles, found they worked great. Up Crabtree Brow to Garburn Pass. Followed wall to Yoke.Snow and ice. Bad visibility, mist and drizzle. On to Ill Bell, then Frostwick, getting very cold now. On to Thorntwaite Beacon, horizontal icycles. Verglas abound and horizontal icycles coming off rucksack and poles. Bleathwaite crag and onto Mardale Ill Bell. Now gale force winds, could not hear each other shouting from about a foot away. Cut down to Nan Bield Pass having to use ice axe on frozen snow slope. Getting desperate now. Cut down to Nan Bield Pass and sheltered behind boulder and tried to get warmth into hands and body. Decided to abort the route and descend into Kentmere valley past Smallthwaite Knott. Headtorches on and down to Hallow Bank Quarter and out of the mist. Lots of talk of the Alps.Mark T23/01/1994

Colin, Joan, Peter, Ian, Christopher Baldwin, Willie & dogs. Sunday 24th May. Another glorious day so we ventured to Kentmere and enjoyed a walk up Garburn onto Ill Bell, Froswick, etc Thornthwaite Crag and down Nan Bield. Hot sunshine and glorious views ending with a walk down Kentmere valley - a dip in the river where Peter found a crayfish. We stopped off at a glorious cottage garden for tea, orange juice and fresh scones - this is real living. A happy evening of rounders with all the neighbours kept us going until dark.PeteF24/05/1987

So many ways and days on this mountain, but today on the Threshthwaite Horseshoe- my first time on this walk which I like very much- good scenery, feeling wilder and more remote than much of Lakeland. The ridge walk from Caudale Moor to Threshthwaite Mouth and up to this summit was definitely mountaineering in the snow, ice and wind. The snow above 1200 ft and glorious golden sunshine in the afternoon made this one of those days that make you want to keep coming back in winter conditions. Another memorable day was over Ill Bell to here and down to Patterdale via High Street(qv).pwheeler08/01/1984

Patterdale YH to Windermere Bus Station via The Knott, Rampsgill Head, High raise, Kidsty Pike, High street, Thornthwaite Beacon, Frostwick, Ill Bell, Yoke. 15th April 1982. Set off from YH 8:55. Sunny but cloulds over high tops. Still had cold. No paths up Angle tarm Pikes or Rest Dodd so did not do them. The Knott 11:11, Rampsgill Head 11:36, High raise 12:00, Kidsty Pike 12:13, Followed Roman Road - just looks like normal fell path. Followed wall up into mist. High Street 12:54. Beacon 14 feet tall, still no view in mist 1;31. Came down out of mist and saw my final destination - Windermere. Frostwick amd Ill Bell look like classic little mountains. Got to Windermere 4:57 Part of the 1982 Tour of the Lake District.Victor15/04/1982
