Staying at Coniston YH with Alex McBride for the weekend, we headed up Walna Scar Road (a track really) for a circuit covering eight summits. Five of which were Hewitts and Wainwrights, two were just Wainwrights and one was just a Hewitt. Alex is bagging the Wainwrights, while I'm doing the Hewitts. Summits in order: Dow Crag (774m), H and W Old Man of Coniston (803m), H and W Brim Fell (796m), W Grey Frair (773m), H and W Great Carr (785m), W Swirl How (802m), H and W Black Sails (745m), H Wetherlam (763m), H and Wchillyman821/10/2023

10.5 mile walk from lane north-west of Coniston (free parking). Walked up track towards Miners Bridge then started ascending passing the old quarry up nice grassy ridge all the way to Wetherlam, from here we continued easily to Black Sails then steeply up Prison Band to Swirl How. Then its an easy amble to Great Carrs taking in plane wreckage on the way, then grassy descent/ascent to Grey Friar. Descended back to col then followed contouring path around Swirl Band to Levers Hawse following track past Levers Water, down to the Pudding Stone then up to The Bell which has great views for a little hill. We then followed tourist track back to Miners Bridge and back to car. Perfect sunny/light breezy conditions, we saw a few people about but not too many for the Lakes. Great views all round. 1141m ascent.DanTrig24/04/2021

From Grey Friar again we cut across Great Carrs knowing wed be doing it last on this walk taking the direct route route to Swirl How. Fantastic summit on the edge of a cliff looking down the valley to Windermere. We actually didnt stay at all on this summit as there was people on it but because we were going to retrace our steps back up Prison Band coming back to the summit and finally getting Great Carrs in. But when we got back and hour or so later it really was a great rocky summit with a great cairn at the head of the valley.Scotty 2 Hotty21/06/2018

Beautiful weather hike with Ian and Louise. Route from Wrynose Bottom to Skelwith Bridge, using two cars, over 11.5 miles and 6 summits:- Little Carrs - Hell Gill Pike - Grey Friar - Great Carrs - Swirl How - Black Fell. Wonderful clear view of Scafell range from Grey Friar, and early evening from Black Fell looking back up Langdales. Interesting but sad story of the plane crash on Great Carrs. Path down from Swirl Hause into Greenburn very indistinct (lost it several times!). Had late lunch in Three Shires Inn, Little Langdale, before the Black Fell section.mavero1028/09/2013

Climbed with Simon in terrible weather. Date is an estimate. Left too late really, particularly for November and didn't get to the summit until 4pm. Very misty and quite a few people on the top that were struggling to get their bearings. We lost our way down and ended up going the wrong way in the mist. Finally got onto a road, by this point in the dark and had to walk along that for about three miles to get back to the car. Since this walk have been taking torches and survival bags and compass on walks.alexmounsey11/11/2011

A lovely day and the boys settle on the Coniston horseshoe which gives me time to relax & dose while they investigate the levels. Park at old station and walk up towards Coppermines then cut up to track up to Low Water beautifully blue and cool. Direst walk up nose avoiding the busy main track gave us a lovely private lunch spot at a new 'to us' cavern. As a guest of Colin Kenning on a Vibram MC meet. 7 of us scrambled up Low Water Beck & Brim Fell (which I had done back i June). I went last in line. Included a nasty heather scramble alongside water chute.Crashed bomber wreck visible from top of Swirl How. I hobbled down prison band and down via Levers Water - still sore feet from turning ankle 2 weeks ago. Back to Barrow.Chris Pearson20/10/1985

Roger 12, Robert, Peter, Ian and Mummy. May 28th Stratus clouds sit on the hills but the cloud is broken so we have a day on Consiton Old Man exploring the mines and enjoying the improving weather - a cold wind but visibility gradually improving - return via Brim Fell & Swirl How. Still enough energy to climb the fell after tea.PeteF28/05/1984
Inspired by 'Classic Walks' a solo round of all 10 Bridge 2000ft summits of the main Coniston group from White Maiden to Wetherlam- 14 mile 4000ft ascent. Wore my new KSB mountain boots.Thin covering of snow on frozen ground, using my walker's ice axe as a precaution on hard sloping patches of snow. Cloud on & off with some magical moments when the sun broke through.Chris Pearson18/03/1984

Second ever Wainwright on family walking tour of Lakeland. From Coniston YH to Duddon YH. We walked past the coppermines, then up the then essentially pathless valley and ascended Prison Band. A fine, if hazy day. My mother was exhausted by all this and her reward was a night's rest on a straw mattress (only the boys' dorm had foam mattresses). The YH is no longer, but still the active Black Hall farm. The first of ~10 visits to this fine mountain, the pivotal point of the Coniston Fells.pwheeler24/08/1970

Leading a party of boys from the King's School, Chester. From Troutal Youth Hostel to Seathwaite Tarn and up moderately rough ground to the summit of Grey Friar. We climbed up Easy Gully (snow in the upper parts) to the summit of Dow Crag. Over Buck Pike and Brown Pike to Walna Scar Road, which was used for the descent to the valley. Back to Troutal.pwbellarby12/04/1962
