A wet and misty day. | EricMoore | 06/10/2023 |
Solo. From Crookburn Bridge. Along the fence to Scraith Head and the Burnhope Seat Trig Point, using the eastern side of the fence as this was a little easier. Went west to the true summit of Burnhope Seat (grassy mound) and down to the road at Darngill bridge. Back to Crookburn Bridge on the road. Dry. | pwbellarby | 10/08/2023 |
From the parking area at NY771376, followed the ski tow and then the fence. Thick mist, rain, very wet underfoot! | Geoff Briggs | 23/07/2023 |
With Val. Good weather. Followed the ski tow then on the summit. Went on to TP and also the Cairn. | mike.hoult | 18/05/2023 |
Walk up from Yad Moss lay-by and followed the ski tow up the hill. Conditions above 600 metre were awful; heavy snow and white out with about 3-6 inches of snow with deeper drifts. This was a revisit. This time visited the cairn, the true summit and the trig point. Returned by the same route. Time taken 1 hour 20 minutes for 2.5 miles. | isabelle | 12/04/2023 |
After trig point. Repeat visit. | PGCE | 25/01/2023 |
Crookburn Bridge - fence to Scraith Head - Burnhope Seat (trig point and summit) - fence to within 150 yards of Harwood Common summit - across country to Crookburn Bridge. | Mark Jackson | 31/12/2022 |
On the way to the main event - Burnhope Seat trig point. | Newton Maximus | 06/10/2022 |
From Burnhope reservoir, Nuttall walk 10.1: Three Pikes (hideous boggy mess),Great Stony Hill, Harwood Common, Burnhope Seat Trig and true summit, and Dead Stones. Good walking weather, cool with good visibility. This is a really tough walk due to the terrain (peat hags, heather & bog) and long sections with no paths. | Lazylizzie | 25/08/2022 |
Easy walk from the trig point today. No standing water and peat dry. Up from Kilhope Cross and back the same way. | Walker Dan | 11/08/2022 |
4/5 Nuttalls of 10.1. | DavidGMould | 24/06/2022 |
From Burnhope reservoir,Three Pikes,Great Stony Hill, Harewood Common, Burnhope Seat and Dead Stones. 5.5 hours, overcast but no mist. | Longwojo | 13/06/2022 |
With J on way back from week in Sutherland. On a filthy wet day, left original target of Cross Fell alone & got hammered on this short walk instead. Parked at cattle grid on county border at Crookburn Bridge (lots of room). Handrailed fence to trig & then on to true summit. Quick visit to Dead Stones & then reversed route. Relatively dry underfoot. The hags weren't the worst I've found but hill probably best done on cold, frosty day, I think. Heard & spotted plovers, curlews & bizarrely, buzzed by 2 honking geese on the descent! | NotReallyABagger | 22/05/2022 |
2 of 4: From 771 377 via ski tows. Cairn, TP and HP. With Karen. | ChrisR | 28/04/2022 |
I walked over from Harwood Common. The approach was much easier than I thought it would be. The peat was quite dry and despite being overcast with dark clouds above me, the views were far reaching. | morgs4mountains | 24/03/2022 |
Very easy walk from Nenthead. Carried on to Ashgill, up the skiing to Burnhope Seat. And horrible walk along to Dead Stones, Nag's Head, Knoutberrry Hill and back to Nenthead. Take gaiters next time! 12.5m all round | NCurtis | 26/02/2022 |
Circuit from Crookburn Bridge (NY781357) with Alex, taking in Harwood Common, Burnhope Seat trig & Burnhope Seat summit. Very misty, no views today. | Tony J | 14/11/2021 |
Mostly Misty ascent with Sal up via boggy boundary from road high point and down to road to SW which was better underfoot. | davechaffey | 14/11/2021 |
Mist was down most of the way from the road so this could have been anywhere really. | Alex C | 14/11/2021 |
Circular walk from parking at Killhope Cross. Down to old workings, Priorsdale, Little Gill Hush, Burnhope Seat hp & trig, Dead Stones and Knoutberry Hill. Overcast, misty at times. With Gillian, Graham and Selwyn | richard69 | 14/11/2021 |
Easy stroll up from Crookburn Bridge on a very hot day, the bogs thankfully largely dried out. | Rockdoctor | 19/07/2021 |

Came from Harwood Common in a strong Wind from the west. Had lunch sheltered by the peat hags close to the fence. Then it started to rain, followed the fence down to the boundary stone then over a stile and followed The path alongside the fence up to trig point. Straightforward but boggy. Decided to go down to the road via the ski club as the mist had descended, but the area on top (supposedly the highest point of the hill) was very wet, despite it being summer and not much rain recently. Had to carefully work way across, frequently backtracking when the standing water got too deep. This was by far the wettest part of any of the walks we had done in the area. No sign of the county top, is so boggy I expect stones would sink. Or is the county top over the fence? It seems strange that the 1:50000 map shows 2 summits, the 1:25000 only shows one, I suspect because the location is too hard to find! | Malcvolm | 26/07/2020 |
Walked up lane from Ireshopeburn to join Nuttalls route 10:1 to Three Pikes, Great Stony Hill, Harwood Common, Burnhope Seat and Dead Stones. | dgresty | 21/07/2020 |
From Burnhope Reservoir along grouse track to Sallygrain Head. Then fence to summit (easy to do Deadstones if you want but already did it in January). A lot of peat hags to contend with. There are pallets on the other side of the fence but broken - stand on the support blocks between the wood.
Left the summit by following fence to summit of Harwood Common | NorthernWayfarer | 20/06/2020 |
On nordic skis | Pete Pozman | 05/03/2020 |
Started from the lay-by on B6277 by Yad Moss Ski Tow. No clear path. Very very boggy. | DJWan | 29/12/2019 |
Start at small parking area off the B6277 Grid 788351. | smocks and denims | 29/11/2019 |
Parking area at bottom of ski slope. Up past ski lift to BurnhopeSeat trig. Then out and back to Harwood Common and out and back to Dead Stones and Nags Head. Lots of boggy ground, peat hags and tussocks. Made sure of Burnhope Seat on return and the cairn. Some views over to Cross and tghe Dun fells but hazy. Bit of a slog. | mart0797 | 25/07/2019 |
As per Nuttalls' 10.1 minus Three Pikes. Lovely clear day and vey dry underfoot. Just as well as it looks as though this top could get pretty squelchy in less ideal conditions. | milimana | 23/05/2019 |
Straight up from Yad Moss | Gordy | 17/05/2019 |
Quick route via Had Moss ski slopes | ghullgd | 15/05/2019 |
Parked below ski tow, then short walk to summit. Did the trig and also the small cairn on way. Just in case. Company: Solo | iandesbottes | 13/05/2019 |
Done on a walk from burnhope reservoir visiting the tops of great stony hill, burnhope seat and dead stones. True summit about 200m north over the fence from the trigpoint. | Brunshaw | 13/04/2019 |
From the cattle grid at the County boundary. After the summit arrived at the trig at exactly the same time as fellow bangers and enjoyed a long conversation. Made the hill so much more enjoyable as a result. | NormanW | 27/02/2019 |
With G. From Ashgill Bridge then minor road at Mid Ashgill to access land just south of Harelaw Hill. Followed boundaries > Burnhope Seat > Burnhope Seat Trig > Dead Stones. Headed west / WSW to pick up good track at Little Gill Hush then back on minor road to Ashgill. | RT1970 | 23/02/2019 |
From Burnhope Reservoir, Nuttalls route without Three Pikes. Sunny but very wet underfoot | Gary Heath | 17/02/2019 |
From local road, no tracks or paths but ground mostly OK. Generally sunny but intermittent fog coming in on strong and cold NW wind. | Topographer57 | 09/12/2018 |

Reached from the pull in area where the border fence reaches the B6277 and used fence as a hand rail first visiting the trig county top of Durham then over to the summit returned same way in two hours. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 04/08/2018 |
10 mile walk from Ashgill Bridge, down to lovely waterfall then along river S. Tyne to Tynehead farm, took footpath up then ascended Burnhope Seat to road then through ski tows to featureless summit and after trig, followed ridge to Dead Stones then along to Nags Head rise, descended to Perrys dam and picked up quarry track, rough route across to Flinty Fell, from there headed back to quarry track then barely used footpath back to Ashgill Bridge. Great sunny day with breeze and great views, at the moment very easy to walk because all bogs are dry, would hate to do this walk after a lot of rain. | DanTrig | 29/06/2018 |
Yad Moss to Killhope Cross with Joe. | John Lee | 13/06/2018 |

From B6277, parking by quarry N of Darngill Bridge. Rough heather moorland; boggy, particularly when transferring across to the trig. | jonglew | 06/12/2017 |
. I found the foot of Burnhope Seat with some difficulty and started the walk from Darngill Bridge. There was a stunning view of Cross Fell and the Dun Fells from the cairn shortly before the ground began to level out. The Nuttalls have the summit as the trig point, but in fact it is on some higher ground on the other side of the fence, the mound being marked with a pile of stones. Getting there was painfully slow, with many blind alleys caused by wet ground. | peter4lc | 27/10/2017 |
With E. From small lay-by on B6277 next to MS (NY7749236407) across open moor to trig point then onto grassy mound and Burnhope Seat summit other side of fence. Return same route. | Beeliner | 06/10/2017 |
Parked up at head of Weardale valley on A689 and ran here. Trig didn't look to be at the highest point, so plodded 50+ yards over to the point that looked higher also (with a couple of stones there, so clearly other people had the same thoughts). | madaddo | 16/07/2017 |
Solo. Parked at a lay-by on the B6277 below a ski tow. Then followed the line of the ski tow and then a fence to trig point. Then back along other side of same fence to county top which is marked by a small but noticeable cairn. | ADT | 09/07/2017 |
A purgatorial Pennine plod in heavy rain, fog and cold wind, the circuit from Burnhope reservoir. Up the path from Stripe Head, across the moor to an ATV track leading to Highwatch Currick, along the wall and then the fence. A bit of path, but numerous bogs and hags to avoid. Brief respite from the weather at the Dead Stones hut, then struck out across peat bogs and hags to Burnhope Seat. A brief section on wooden pallets at the most gruesome section avoids drowning. Found the trig and the top, then through interminable bogs to the delightfully dry and hag-free Great Stony Hill, the best top of the day. There's a fence all the way, contrary to the map, so navigation is dead easy. One last massive bog and then an easy descent on the track. | Gill | 29/06/2017 |
Walked up by side of county boundary fence from B6277, using landrover tracks/ channels in peat- it was so dry walking up the hags was pleasant. With a strong E wind I walked right by a Golden Plover's nest and was noticed at the last second- 4 eggs, first time I've seen a nest- hurried away to trig pt, then summit. met a self-professed Ma bagger on top. Then back via Great Stony Fell, the top of Harwood Dale- mining interest, lots of moorland birds- a black grouse and lapwings in abundance- and Spitey Tongue. A good walk (over 4h inc rests, etc). Cloud blowing away, already off summits when I started. | pwheeler | 06/05/2017 |
Super weather - good views - approached from NY808354 (near cattle grid). Went on to Great Stony Hill. | ger | 23/04/2017 |
Ticked off the cairn 2 years after my last visit. Beautiful day, part of a pennines round. Solo. | Tom D | 07/04/2017 |
From parking area at the Cumbria/Durham border on the A689. Very boggy in patches, pallets laid on the Cumbrian side of the border proved very useful. Summit near impossible to identify, found a small cairn and stood on anything that looked like it could be higher nearby. | muzza2 | 06/04/2017 |
Nuttall Walk EN 10.1 Burnhope Seat from Burnhope Reservoir. Three Pikes, Great Stony Hill, Harwood Common, Burnhope Seat (summit and trig) and Dead Stones. Very wet underfoot! 22km with 560m ascent in 7 hours. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 01/03/2017 |
Started at Burnhope Resorvoir parking on the NE end of dam. Walked along N side of resorvoir to the far western end. Took track leading up the hill side to Green Laws and Highwatch Currick. Battled with into the wind to Dead Stones and into the low cloud. Welcome stop in the shelter on Dead Stones before continuing to south to Burnhope Seat, Scraith Head, Harwood Common, Scaud Hill finishing on Great Stony Hill. I returned via the rough track down to Grasshill Causeway and the resorvoir. | axe.stephen | 19/02/2017 |
From Crookburn Bridge with Sue to trig and then pile of stones for summit. | Frank | 06/10/2016 |

1/5 First of warm, sunny day in Yorkshire (Burnhope Seat/Burnhope Seat (trig Point)/Harwood Common/Nab Hill/Soil Hill) | Fergalh | 05/06/2016 |
Followed county boundary from Yad Moss in thick mist. From Trig point followed GPS to locate top. Continued to Dead Stones. | Bheinn | 04/06/2016 |
Walked on my own from Burnhope Reservoir. Glorious Spring sunshine and a pleasant breeze. Didn't see a soul up here but wide ranging views and plenty of birds for company. There are a lot of peat bogs and mossy bogs too which make it quite hard going at times. Good fences make route finding easy on this walk. | flockwatcher | 20/04/2016 |
2mFM radio activation. NP-003. | Petem0hqo | 14/04/2016 |
#574 Up the ski tow, then a boggy wander about visiting the Trig and several potential summits for a tamper proof bag. | tim747 | 11/04/2016 |
B6277 (by Crook Burn) - Yad Moss (still with occasional banks of snow - cloudy but a halo of light picks out Great/Little Dun fells to the West) - Scaith Head (a peaty morass) - trig (but not the summit! getting used to this web site now) - Spied summit approx. 200m away (small stone cairn marks top) - checked out the ski tow (looks odd and out of place with no snow)- back to trig the descend following Crook Burn (summit disappears as we reach the B6277). | briandavies | 19/03/2016 |
FIFTH CONSECUTIVE FINE DAY AT ALSTON BASE CAMP. DROPPED OFF ON B6277 BELOW THREE PIKES AND REASONABLY EASY ASCENT EXCEPT AT TOP. DOWN TO COLL AND EASY OVER GREAT STONY HILL. THEN LONG BUT STRAIGHTFORWARD TRUDGE TO HARWOOD COMMON AND QUICKLY ON TO BURNWOOD SEAT. SUMMIT IS NOT AT TRIG POINT BUT 200+ METRES WEST OVER POOLS AND REEDS - UGH! QUITE BOGGY ON TO DEAD STONES, THEN EASY DESCENT WEST TO BE PICKED UP ON MINOR ROAD AT END OF FOREST. | BURGESS | 29/09/2015 |
From resv. Followed excellent estate track up to langtae burn then followed this upstream just to add a bit more variance. Numerous pretty waterfalls and limestone features as well as some interesting minerals. Reaching the watershed followed fence up and over Scaud hill and nipped out and vack to Garwood common..which unusually for a nutall is actually worth visiting. The trudge between harwood and burnhope is about as bad as it gets. Peat + water = well you know the rest.. trig stand proud on a plinth and is a more worthy top than the grassy mound.. whats a few centimeters.. actual top is adorned by a small cairn.. off to dead stones now. | stig_nest | 02/08/2015 |
Another disaster, visited Trig last year then found out that it was not the top. Up from the road to the south. wandered around the flat top for a while. | mick | 24/07/2015 |
On may way back from the Trig Point - it seems that the knoll you are not standing on is higher than where you are - until you walk over and look back - and then, perhaps, you were on the summit after all. Great, if not a lottle spooky, views west to Cross Fell | M3WDD | 11/07/2015 |
Disaster!!!
Climbed to trig point, drove back home, then found out the trig isn't the summit. I've decided to count it as I'm more than 1.5m and was therefore higher than the top.Might go back one day and do it properly. | andy63 | 25/05/2015 |

With Jo, circular walk from Burnhope Reservoir: Grasshill Causeway to Great Stony Hill, Scaud Hill, Harwood Common, Burnhope Seat Trig Point, Burnhope Seat, Dead Stones, returning over Highwatch Currick. Weather; sunny, light cool breeze, very good visibility. | amblerbob | 24/07/2014 |
Dry, overcast, calm, warm, good views, both tops. | iangalbraith | 29/06/2014 |
Revisited as I had previously taken the Nuttall summit to be the Trig point. An easy climb from Darngill Bridge and dryish underfoot until I decided to visit the Trig point as well! | Fisky Boy | 08/05/2014 |
With Fisky Boy | Brenda Cloke | 08/05/2014 |

Three Pikes - Great Stony Hill - Harwood Common - Burnhope Seat - Burnhope Seat(trig) - Dead Stones | ronaldo333 | 22/03/2014 |
Had to revisit this fell arising from Hillbagging update creating a separate top for the trig point. I had previously taken that as being the Nuttall summit, as advised in the Nuttalls book. Bagged the correct top today, and also visited the cairn at 78403,37624 which looks higher - whoever constructed the cairn must have thought so too. | Crib Goch | 05/03/2014 |

Very easy post-dinner stroll up from layby at Darngill bridge. Track above left (north) bank of Darn Gill leads to sheep pens, from where it's a bog-free amble to the summit (it looked pretty grim to go onwards to the trig from there, but we were happy to stick with just the high point itself). | wheresthepath | 15/07/2012 |

As nuttall walk 10.1 plus extra bit to the high point.A classic Pennine experience to be savored after a period of wet weather. Mrs Mindless flogger threatened divorce when I insisted we walk to the high point which is obviously not the trig point. Emailed John Nuttall about his book being wrong and he made excuses about following an OS map. Perhaps he's only been there in the mist. However he liked my photo of Mrs M 'enjoying' the walk. | mindlessflogger | 12/11/2011 |
With Jenx plus Andy T on a soggy underfoot day. Weather breezy and clear. On an evening after work. Up Darn Gill from DG Bridge - over the bump of summit and out to Trig for good measure. Back down line of ski tows. | nordicstar | 04/10/2011 |
From Harwood Common then back along same route to track to join road. Wet in sections but not as bad as I expected. | nevans84 | 30/08/2011 |
Nuttall route 10.1, with Alison. I wasn't expecting a trig point on Harwood Common. Then I realised we had actually reached Burnhope Seat, and that the area of peat groughs and tussocks that we'd cunningly bypassed half an hour earlier had been Harwood | davidpettit84 | 29/08/2011 |
Followed the Nuttalls' route. It is very dry at the moment, so the going is easy - I would advise going to do these now! (Or next time it's dry... Would be awful after a wet period!) With Dad. | AGWilliamson | 30/07/2011 |

I wonder how many people visit the trig thinking tey are at the summitt. The actual top is some way away over, you've guess it, boggy ground. Luckily for me I had a hot day in a dry summer. | Father Ted | 03/07/2011 |
Parked in layby at 754372. Cloud and strong SW wind. Although local rivers in spate, going not too boggy except on summit. Some rain on descent. | dbb | 05/04/2011 |
Parked by Crookburn Bridge (NY781357) and walked across moor in 20yd visibility by GPS bearing. Summit mound not very obvious in snow!Had to use GPS to find trig point 1/4 mile away. One of the bleakest places I've ever been! | citygent | 18/02/2011 |
As Nuttall route except Three Pikes which is one top too many on this fairly horrendous bog trot. My advice is to do it after a dry spell in the middle of summer! | David Gradwell | 09/10/2010 |
Cold wintery day - wet underfoot, strong icy winds and blustery showers with sleat. Trig, and it's concrete base now getting quite elevated from the surrounding ground. | andrew larkins | 28/03/2010 |

From grid ref. NY814351. | Marshsand | 07/10/2009 |
Alan and Otis | Glenford | 04/10/2009 |
Overcast all day, dry cool breeze on tops. As Nuttall's guide book but started near the gate up the road, rather than going through gates to road over Burnhope reservoir dam. | joseph mitchell | 18/09/2009 |
Went up from parking place at Darn Gill NY774371, returned via the ski run to Hengill Bridge on B6277. Operated Ham Radio for SOTA making 58 contacts. A boggy walk with a good view of Burnhope Reervoir from the top:

slept in the little wooden hut on the SW side of it. with Jamie | vegibagger | 25/05/2009 |
Ascended from Burnhope reservoir via Dead Stones. Followed fence line through peat hags and bog SE to Scaud Hill and descended on estate access track to Burnhope Burn. Track reaches ridge at new metal gate GR NY 801367 | abrannon | 10/04/2009 |
Ground frozen, some snow. Bog not a problem in these conditions. Weather clear, but sub-zero temperatures. Kids walked up via Yad Moss with sledges and slid back down! | woodruffFamily | 03/01/2009 |
Nuttalls route in reverse (except Three Pikes). Cold, lots of frost and ground frozen, but still a bog trot!
Previously done on 20/11/2005 | Jhimmy | 30/11/2008 |
Start ~ 771377. Climbed up to then underneath the ski tows to the top station and then up to the top of Burnhope Seat. Wide bog on the top. With Wombourne. | steve hudson | 01/10/2008 |
Second ascent. | thenomad | 01/10/2008 |
as for Dead Stones , summit marked by innocuous cairn in a boggy wasteland near the fence atop a hillock. Also visited trig point a few hundred yards away across the bog. Bit of snow still left. | isabelle | 24/04/2008 |
Parked in a layby on the B6277 and followed the ski tows to the top plateau - there was some snow runs that provided an entertaining run down. The fence was followed across the bogs to the top and then to the raised trig point. | chinnock | 10/02/2008 |
Little Gill Cottage to Dead Stones, Burnhope Seat and Down. Very tough going, poor vis. | dianepick | 30/12/2007 |
Climbed solo from Cowshill via Burnhope reservoir, Three Pikes, Great Stony Hill and Harwood Common. Continued to Dead Stones. | dhbond | 08/10/2007 |
Parked below the ski tows. Walked to Dead Stones first then Burnhope Seat and then Harwood Common. Did the lot in wellies - twice the mess nearly went over the top of them. Conditions fairly dry. If wet or been wet suggest you take your waders. | destaylor | 18/09/2007 |
Solo | 1921 | 15/08/2007 |
My last county top in the north of England on a nice clear day. Visited the trig (the only top that is in "County Durham"?) and the true Marilyn top at NY 78402 37624 | signyred | 10/08/2007 |
swam up with the other ducks, trig pillar on top, desended via the river as it was easier than the path. | Loz_mck | 01/08/2007 |
Started from Harwood Common summit, boggy walk, hit the trig point in cloud condition, dry, 1C temp, actual summit is approx 200m west from trig point, small pile of stones. | Angus | 17/02/2007 |
ascended twice today after sdogleg to Dead Stones. Snow and blasting wind, but sunny second time | gigglejon | 18/11/2006 |
Via John's Burn to the SW. Not very exciting walk to trig. There's a small cairn quite some distance to the W. Golden plovers and a dunlin seen near top. | Aye Jimmy | 04/06/2006 |
Nice short climb from the quarry entrance at NY773372. Unfortunately I did it in torrential rain | M0ZZO | 27/05/2006 |
for SOTA, easy ascent | Ian G7KXV | 24/04/2006 |
On way back from Cold Fell | richardsun | 04/12/2005 |

Passed the trig point during my walk around the Weardale Watershed. As I spotted that the OS map indicated the true summit was a short distance away I toddle over. Did not carry a camera in those days! | moorsman | 20/04/2004 |
Up the old tows through decent snow en route to trig. | Eddie | 26/01/2004 |
R deep snow tough | Richard Tait | 29/12/2003 |
Alone, using train & bus to get to Allenheads. | Grinner | 27/09/2003 |

Harwood Common then trig then true summit of Burnhope Seat with OK going after recent dry weather. | Dugswell2 | 03/10/2002 |
Made my way to the OS triangulation pillar before heading west across the moor to the true summit. I didn't actually visit the pillar but could see it across the moor. | yorkie | 09/07/2000 |
Just visited the trig pillar believing it to be the summit of the hill - my mistake, I'll have to revisit. It had been a long day and I was spent! | yorkie | 19/03/2000 |
R | Richard Tait | 21/11/1999 |
Local hill in 90s, first w Mike W and also MR team training. A somewhat soggy summit area. | nordicstar | 02/01/1999 |

From NY 845 392 to NY 850 329 picking up Nuttalls. 1999/2000? | summitsup | blank |
From the ski tows on the road to the west.
The top was one big Borland.
The top was found after first visiting the trig point near the fence. | ChinnockC | blank |
From burnhope reservoir up the causeway track then across to burnhope west and down via high watch currick. Mostly an uninspiring bit trot would hate to be here when the ground is sodden as it was mostly dry and I still had to avoid bogs. | emily | blank |
Two ascents, both on Nuttalls round. Last 2013 | Flatfield | blank |
Four tops in three short walks. First Round Hill from Tynehead road end, easy going. Then drove round to Flinty Fell from North, located unmarked summit with OS Locate. Then round to do Burnhope Seat and Dead Stones via the ski tow. This last also easy going but it would have been a different matter after a wet spell I suspect. | dickscroop | blank |
