A wet and misty day.EricMoore06/10/2023
Solo. From Crookburn Bridge. Along the fence to Scraith Head and the Burnhope Seat Trig Point, using the eastern side of the fence as this was a little easier. Went west to the true summit of Burnhope Seat (grassy mound) and down to the road at Darngill bridge. Back to Crookburn Bridge on the road. Dry.pwbellarby10/08/2023
From the parking area at NY771376, followed the ski tow and then the fence. Thick mist, rain, very wet underfoot!Geoff Briggs23/07/2023
With Val. Good weather. Followed the ski tow then on the summit. Went on to TP and also the Cairn.mike.hoult18/05/2023
Walk up from Yad Moss lay-by and followed the ski tow up the hill. Conditions above 600 metre were awful; heavy snow and white out with about 3-6 inches of snow with deeper drifts. This was a revisit. This time visited the cairn, the true summit and the trig point. Returned by the same route. Time taken 1 hour 20 minutes for 2.5 miles.isabelle12/04/2023

From Burnhope reservoir, Nuttall walk 10.1: Three Pikes (hideous boggy mess),Great Stony Hill, Harwood Common, Burnhope Seat Trig and true summit, and Dead Stones. Good walking weather, cool with good visibility. This is a really tough walk due to the terrain (peat hags, heather & bog) and long sections with no paths.Lazylizzie25/08/2022
Easy walk from the trig point today. No standing water and peat dry. Up from Kilhope Cross and back the same way.Walker Dan11/08/2022

With J on way back from week in Sutherland. On a filthy wet day, left original target of Cross Fell alone & got hammered on this short walk instead. Parked at cattle grid on county border at Crookburn Bridge (lots of room). Handrailed fence to trig & then on to true summit. Quick visit to Dead Stones & then reversed route. Relatively dry underfoot. The hags weren't the worst I've found but hill probably best done on cold, frosty day, I think. Heard & spotted plovers, curlews & bizarrely, buzzed by 2 honking geese on the descent!NotReallyABagger22/05/2022

I walked over from Harwood Common. The approach was much easier than I thought it would be. The peat was quite dry and despite being overcast with dark clouds above me, the views were far reaching.morgs4mountains24/03/2022
Very easy walk from Nenthead. Carried on to Ashgill, up the skiing to Burnhope Seat. And horrible walk along to Dead Stones, Nag's Head, Knoutberrry Hill and back to Nenthead. Take gaiters next time! 12.5m all roundNCurtis26/02/2022

Came from Harwood Common in a strong Wind from the west. Had lunch sheltered by the peat hags close to the fence. Then it started to rain, followed the fence down to the boundary stone then over a stile and followed The path alongside the fence up to trig point. Straightforward but boggy. Decided to go down to the road via the ski club as the mist had descended, but the area on top (supposedly the highest point of the hill) was very wet, despite it being summer and not much rain recently. Had to carefully work way across, frequently backtracking when the standing water got too deep. This was by far the wettest part of any of the walks we had done in the area. No sign of the county top, is so boggy I expect stones would sink. Or is the county top over the fence? It seems strange that the 1:50000 map shows 2 summits, the 1:25000 only shows one, I suspect because the location is too hard to find!Malcvolm26/07/2020
Walked up lane from Ireshopeburn to join Nuttalls route 10:1 to Three Pikes, Great Stony Hill, Harwood Common, Burnhope Seat and Dead Stones.dgresty21/07/2020
From Burnhope Reservoir along grouse track to Sallygrain Head. Then fence to summit (easy to do Deadstones if you want but already did it in January). A lot of peat hags to contend with. There are pallets on the other side of the fence but broken - stand on the support blocks between the wood. Left the summit by following fence to summit of Harwood CommonNorthernWayfarer20/06/2020

Lots of boggy ground, peat hags and tussocks. Made sure of Burnhope Seat on return and the cairn. Some views over to Cross and tghe Dun fells but hazy. Bit of a slog.mart079725/07/2019
As per Nuttalls' 10.1 minus Three Pikes. Lovely clear day and vey dry underfoot. Just as well as it looks as though this top could get pretty squelchy in less ideal conditions.milimana23/05/2019

Done on a walk from burnhope reservoir visiting the tops of great stony hill, burnhope seat and dead stones. True summit about 200m north over the fence from the trigpoint.Brunshaw13/04/2019
From the cattle grid at the County boundary. After the summit arrived at the trig at exactly the same time as fellow bangers and enjoyed a long conversation. Made the hill so much more enjoyable as a result.NormanW27/02/2019

10 mile walk from Ashgill Bridge, down to lovely waterfall then along river S. Tyne to Tynehead farm, took footpath up then ascended Burnhope Seat to road then through ski tows to featureless summit and after trig, followed ridge to Dead Stones then along to Nags Head rise, descended to Perrys dam and picked up quarry track, rough route across to Flinty Fell, from there headed back to quarry track then barely used footpath back to Ashgill Bridge. Great sunny day with breeze and great views, at the moment very easy to walk because all bogs are dry, would hate to do this walk after a lot of rain.DanTrig29/06/2018

From B6277, parking by quarry N of Darngill Bridge. Rough heather moorland; boggy, particularly when transferring across to the trig.jonglew06/12/2017
. I found the foot of Burnhope Seat with some difficulty and started the walk from Darngill Bridge. There was a stunning view of Cross Fell and the Dun Fells from the cairn shortly before the ground began to level out. The Nuttalls have the summit as the trig point, but in fact it is on some higher ground on the other side of the fence, the mound being marked with a pile of stones. Getting there was painfully slow, with many blind alleys caused by wet ground.peter4lc27/10/2017
With E. From small lay-by on B6277 next to MS (NY7749236407) across open moor to trig point then onto grassy mound and Burnhope Seat summit other side of fence. Return same route.Beeliner06/10/2017
Parked up at head of Weardale valley on A689 and ran here. Trig didn't look to be at the highest point, so plodded 50+ yards over to the point that looked higher also (with a couple of stones there, so clearly other people had the same thoughts).madaddo16/07/2017
Solo. Parked at a lay-by on the B6277 below a ski tow. Then followed the line of the ski tow and then a fence to trig point. Then back along other side of same fence to county top which is marked by a small but noticeable cairn.ADT09/07/2017
A purgatorial Pennine plod in heavy rain, fog and cold wind, the circuit from Burnhope reservoir. Up the path from Stripe Head, across the moor to an ATV track leading to Highwatch Currick, along the wall and then the fence. A bit of path, but numerous bogs and hags to avoid. Brief respite from the weather at the Dead Stones hut, then struck out across peat bogs and hags to Burnhope Seat. A brief section on wooden pallets at the most gruesome section avoids drowning. Found the trig and the top, then through interminable bogs to the delightfully dry and hag-free Great Stony Hill, the best top of the day. There's a fence all the way, contrary to the map, so navigation is dead easy. One last massive bog and then an easy descent on the track.Gill29/06/2017
Walked up by side of county boundary fence from B6277, using landrover tracks/ channels in peat- it was so dry walking up the hags was pleasant. With a strong E wind I walked right by a Golden Plover's nest and was noticed at the last second- 4 eggs, first time I've seen a nest- hurried away to trig pt, then summit. met a self-professed Ma bagger on top. Then back via Great Stony Fell, the top of Harwood Dale- mining interest, lots of moorland birds- a black grouse and lapwings in abundance- and Spitey Tongue. A good walk (over 4h inc rests, etc). Cloud blowing away, already off summits when I started.pwheeler06/05/2017
Super weather - good views - approached from NY808354 (near cattle grid). Went on to Great Stony Hill.ger23/04/2017
Ticked off the cairn 2 years after my last visit. Beautiful day, part of a pennines round. Solo.Tom D07/04/2017
From parking area at the Cumbria/Durham border on the A689. Very boggy in patches, pallets laid on the Cumbrian side of the border proved very useful. Summit near impossible to identify, found a small cairn and stood on anything that looked like it could be higher nearby.muzza206/04/2017
Nuttall Walk EN 10.1 Burnhope Seat from Burnhope Reservoir. Three Pikes, Great Stony Hill, Harwood Common, Burnhope Seat (summit and trig) and Dead Stones. Very wet underfoot! 22km with 560m ascent in 7 hours. (S)silveracorn_alan01/03/2017
Started at Burnhope Resorvoir parking on the NE end of dam. Walked along N side of resorvoir to the far western end. Took track leading up the hill side to Green Laws and Highwatch Currick. Battled with into the wind to Dead Stones and into the low cloud. Welcome stop in the shelter on Dead Stones before continuing to south to Burnhope Seat, Scraith Head, Harwood Common, Scaud Hill finishing on Great Stony Hill. I returned via the rough track down to Grasshill Causeway and the resorvoir.axe.stephen19/02/2017

Walked on my own from Burnhope Reservoir. Glorious Spring sunshine and a pleasant breeze. Didn't see a soul up here but wide ranging views and plenty of birds for company. There are a lot of peat bogs and mossy bogs too which make it quite hard going at times. Good fences make route finding easy on this walk.flockwatcher20/04/2016

#574 Up the ski tow, then a boggy wander about visiting the Trig and several potential summits for a tamper proof bag.tim74711/04/2016
B6277 (by Crook Burn) - Yad Moss (still with occasional banks of snow - cloudy but a halo of light picks out Great/Little Dun fells to the West) - Scaith Head (a peaty morass) - trig (but not the summit! getting used to this web site now) - Spied summit approx. 200m away (small stone cairn marks top) - checked out the ski tow (looks odd and out of place with no snow)- back to trig the descend following Crook Burn (summit disappears as we reach the B6277).briandavies19/03/2016
FIFTH CONSECUTIVE FINE DAY AT ALSTON BASE CAMP. DROPPED OFF ON B6277 BELOW THREE PIKES AND REASONABLY EASY ASCENT EXCEPT AT TOP. DOWN TO COLL AND EASY OVER GREAT STONY HILL. THEN LONG BUT STRAIGHTFORWARD TRUDGE TO HARWOOD COMMON AND QUICKLY ON TO BURNWOOD SEAT. SUMMIT IS NOT AT TRIG POINT BUT 200+ METRES WEST OVER POOLS AND REEDS - UGH! QUITE BOGGY ON TO DEAD STONES, THEN EASY DESCENT WEST TO BE PICKED UP ON MINOR ROAD AT END OF FOREST.BURGESS29/09/2015
From resv. Followed excellent estate track up to langtae burn then followed this upstream just to add a bit more variance. Numerous pretty waterfalls and limestone features as well as some interesting minerals. Reaching the watershed followed fence up and over Scaud hill and nipped out and vack to Garwood common..which unusually for a nutall is actually worth visiting. The trudge between harwood and burnhope is about as bad as it gets. Peat + water = well you know the rest.. trig stand proud on a plinth and is a more worthy top than the grassy mound.. whats a few centimeters.. actual top is adorned by a small cairn.. off to dead stones now.stig_nest02/08/2015
Another disaster, visited Trig last year then found out that it was not the top. Up from the road to the south. wandered around the flat top for a while.mick24/07/2015
On may way back from the Trig Point - it seems that the knoll you are not standing on is higher than where you are - until you walk over and look back - and then, perhaps, you were on the summit after all. Great, if not a lottle spooky, views west to Cross FellM3WDD11/07/2015
Disaster!!! Climbed to trig point, drove back home, then found out the trig isn't the summit. I've decided to count it as I'm more than 1.5m and was therefore higher than the top.Might go back one day and do it properly.andy6325/05/2015

Had to revisit this fell arising from Hillbagging update creating a separate top for the trig point. I had previously taken that as being the Nuttall summit, as advised in the Nuttalls book. Bagged the correct top today, and also visited the cairn at 78403,37624 which looks higher - whoever constructed the cairn must have thought so too.Crib Goch05/03/2014

As nuttall walk 10.1 plus extra bit to the high point.A classic Pennine experience to be savored after a period of wet weather. Mrs Mindless flogger threatened divorce when I insisted we walk to the high point which is obviously not the trig point. Emailed John Nuttall about his book being wrong and he made excuses about following an OS map. Perhaps he's only been there in the mist. However he liked my photo of Mrs M 'enjoying' the walk.mindlessflogger12/11/2011

as for Dead Stones , summit marked by innocuous cairn in a boggy wasteland near the fence atop a hillock. Also visited trig point a few hundred yards away across the bog. Bit of snow still left.isabelle24/04/2008
Parked in a layby on the B6277 and followed the ski tows to the top plateau - there was some snow runs that provided an entertaining run down. The fence was followed across the bogs to the top and then to the raised trig point.chinnock10/02/2008

Climbed solo from Cowshill via Burnhope reservoir, Three Pikes, Great Stony Hill and Harwood Common. Continued to Dead Stones.dhbond08/10/2007
Parked below the ski tows. Walked to Dead Stones first then Burnhope Seat and then Harwood Common. Did the lot in wellies - twice the mess nearly went over the top of them. Conditions fairly dry. If wet or been wet suggest you take your waders.destaylor18/09/2007

My last county top in the north of England on a nice clear day. Visited the trig (the only top that is in "County Durham"?) and the true Marilyn top at NY 78402 37624signyred10/08/2007

Started from Harwood Common summit, boggy walk, hit the trig point in cloud condition, dry, 1C temp, actual summit is approx 200m west from trig point, small pile of stones.Angus17/02/2007
ascended twice today after sdogleg to Dead Stones. Snow and blasting wind, but sunny second timegigglejon18/11/2006
Via John's Burn to the SW. Not very exciting walk to trig. There's a small cairn quite some distance to the W. Golden plovers and a dunlin seen near top.Aye Jimmy04/06/2006

Made my way to the OS triangulation pillar before heading west across the moor to the true summit. I didn't actually visit the pillar but could see it across the moor. yorkie09/07/2000
Just visited the trig pillar believing it to be the summit of the hill - my mistake, I'll have to revisit. It had been a long day and I was spent!yorkie19/03/2000

From the ski tows on the road to the west. The top was one big Borland. The top was found after first visiting the trig point near the fence.ChinnockCblank
From burnhope reservoir up the causeway track then across to burnhope west and down via high watch currick. Mostly an uninspiring bit trot would hate to be here when the ground is sodden as it was mostly dry and I still had to avoid bogs.emilyblank

Four tops in three short walks. First Round Hill from Tynehead road end, easy going. Then drove round to Flinty Fell from North, located unmarked summit with OS Locate. Then round to do Burnhope Seat and Dead Stones via the ski tow. This last also easy going but it would have been a different matter after a wet spell I suspect.dickscroopblank
