The Thrang, river route to Outhgill, track then path to High Seat, Arch Styrigg, Hugh Seat, Little Fell, Sails, He'll Gill Bridge, Lady Anne's way. Basically Nuttall route 11.5 with extension to Sails. 10 miles. | JulieB | 22/03/2024 |
Parked just N of the bridleway end and S of The Thrang, at NY7832 0050 (space for a couple of cars). Along to Outhgill and started on the signed foothpath, but didn't find much of the path up the hillside. Headed ENE higher up (at least the steep grass was short), arriving on the less steep ground about 750m NNE of the summit. Disappointingly misty and windy. Found an ATV track and followed this round past a couple of cairns to the summit. Continued on to Sails. | LizH | 17/10/2023 |
From Garsdale station out Pennine Journey then up atv track to Bubble Hill then on over Sails (and Little Fell), Hugh Seat, Archy Styrigg and High Seat before following a decent track to the quarry below High Pike Hill, Then on down to row to Thringill, double back to Pennine Journey, past Wharton Hall and up to Kirkby Stephen station. | SS | 21/06/2023 |
18km, 3 hours, 40 mins. Outhgill church, Slough Brae Gill then Healey's Gill to summit. Then Gregory Chapel & became slightly lost on Arch Styrgg in thick cloud before finding cairns and on to Hugh Seat, Little Fell and Sails. Down to Hell Gill where I was mobbed by a short-eared owl then down bridleway back. Lots of lapwings + curlews. | John Eley | 13/05/2023 |
With Tony. Dales 30 no. 23 | LANGDALE | 15/07/2022 |
Early start to Manchester, things to do, had to pick up a girl from Kathmandu, got back to Appleby at half past two, then drove home to pick up the Boo, up to High Pike Hill then High Seat to......and it would have been nice if we finished the day and the poem by going to the zoo. But we didn't. | Alphaville199 | 14/07/2022 |
Outhgill - High seat straight up Mallerstang Edge (steep!) - Gregory Chapel - down to Hellgill Force and return to Outhgill | PreCambrianLife | 11/07/2022 |
Parked at point where Byway meets road at the Thrang, good parking. Walked north along the road to Outhgill then up path marked on map. Not used a lot but not difficult to follow most of the way and good walking. When I eventually lost it picked the best looking line to the ridge, again good going. Reached ridge about 300 metres north of High Seat summit. then south along the ridge on very easy and dry ground all the way to Little Fell. Cut back a little way to a fence down to Hell Gill Beck keeping the new plantation to your left. Over the beck and then pathless vaguely WNW to join the Byway back to start. No path but short grass with just a few easy tussocks. A good walk. | dickscroop | 23/06/2022 |
Mallerstang edge nutalls. Cold wind and mist all the way. Start and end with a concrete ring trigmark | cjo | 14/12/2021 |

First day of the Yoredale Way | PhilipChaston | 21/08/2021 |
Parked at barn just N of Aisgill Moor Cottages (no parking). Along minor PFPs N to Outhgill - awful and obstructed mid-way by a newly fenced plantation and no waymarkers (recommend just stick to road). Awful direct ascent from Outhgill (mapped PFP barely exists) - not recommended, find another way. | Isbjorn | 21/07/2021 |
Cold, wet, windy & misty. With George along ridge from Outhgill | KatyT | 26/06/2021 |

the route up from outhgill can be brutal slow over grassy tussock moor and a very strep ascent but achievable. Parking in Outhgill is scarece with locals moaning.

With RobN. From Keld campsite. | masmith | 15/09/2018 |
Early start from a bivvy on Little Fell to beat the forecast heat. Thoroughly enjoyed the walking, helped by the gorgeous weather and relatively dry bogs. As much as I revelled in the expansive views and airy situation, Wild Boar Fell tugged at my heart up here. Returned to Archy Styrigg and descended Hell Gill with a long road slog back to Garsdale station, notwithstanding a pint in the lovely Moorcock Inn. | Jake994 | 26/07/2018 |
With Bryher from Outhgill. Fun climb straight up through steep edge. After that walked all the tops to Sails and back by the High Road and riverside path. | jenx | 23/06/2018 |

With K; RM waited at car. Great view from Cross Fell to Pen-Y-Ghent. Followed faint track/ATV wheelmarks from junction of road and bridleway to N all the way to summit. Careless bank has some interesting evidence of quarrying and a slight zigzag track up it from the old works. Terrain between careless bank and summit denuded of peat. | Ashley | 13/08/2017 |
From Pendragon castle | Slash3 | 09/07/2017 |

2mFM Radio Activation HNP-012. Parked on roadside and walked over High Pike Hill. With Therese and dogs. nice day but a bit boggy. | Petem0hqo | 22/10/2016 |
Early start 8am from pt 318m on Tommy Road. Climb alongside Gale Sike easy if not rough and fairly steep along the hush. Once above High Brae and in the mist was very glad to have the satellites guiding me. Rather featureless when you can see only 30 metres. Where the summit cairn? What is there is pitiful. Continued to Archy.. | stig_nest | 08/10/2016 |
Bare ground, gorgeous view, however was very windy so kept away from the edges. Part of northern dales horse shoe. | Tom D | 11/09/2016 |
10 Mile walk from parking space at the Thrang, followed Pennine Bridleway past the sculpture and along to Hell Gill Beck, followed tracks up and across boggy land to Ure Head (Sails) cairn, then up onto Lunds Fell, and across boggy col up to Hugh Seat (the last mountain in the Dales we needed), then along to Gregory Chapel and High Seat we had previously walked in 2011, then descended steeply west down edge at Sloe Brae Gill to Outhgill and back along river to the Thrang. Perfect walking weather, high cloud and a breeze. | DanTrig | 27/08/2016 |

From Outhgill on B6259. Very clear views and dry underfoot, the flora and fauna indicating that the ground is usually soggy. | JohnStoneham | 13/07/2013 |
Well 15 years on, but from the South! Sails/Little Fell from Aisgill Moor Cotts. Along 'ridge' on grass track, damp in places but good running line (devious route but neat line, hard in mist). Not a ridge for the wet/windy days you get round here! To Hugh Seat/Styrig then simple jog up to summit and another bolt/ring! But not main cairn!! Muggy day, misty views - warm. Steep down through crags to Outhgill, Jew stone and left car. | nordicstar | 19/06/2013 |
Parked near The Thrang. Old road to High Hall up to Sails, Little Fell, Hugh Seat, Gregory Chapel, High Seat, High Pike Hill, down to Pendragon Castle and return to car by riverside path. Grey but dry. with Natalie. | PaulH | 11/06/2013 |
Up from Outhgill and then High Seat, Archy Styrigg, Hugh Seat, Little Fell and Sails. Down to Hell Gill Bridge and then back along Lady Anne's Way. Really windy today. | tsharp | 16/04/2013 |
. I left the car in the lonely village of Outhgill, where at one time there appears to have been an outdoor pursuits centre of which there is now no sign, walked up a lane and was immediately out on the open hillside. Mallerstang Edge lay up in front of me. There was no path, but skirting round large patches of snow I made slow but steady progress to the gap between Coalwell Scars and Trough Riggs. For the final few hundred feet each step was an effort, but I emerged onto the summit plateau and knew that there would be no more hard work today. A feature of the climb was Wild Boar Fell on the other side of the valley, looking like a mini Matterhorn from the village but revealing itself to be just the end of a ridge, rather like Cnicht. This would be the objective on my next visit to the Dales. I rested at the summit of High Seat and enjoyed the view south to Ingleborough. | peter4lc | 28/02/2013 |

Windy, overcast, dry in morning. Rain ,sleet in afternoon. Sunny for last 1½ hours. Not sure that this ridge is actually worthy of having 4 peaks. Extended the walk down to Hell Gill Force. What is the symbolism of the sculpture on Lady Anne's Highway? | joseph mitchell | 29/09/1997 |

Dales Rail outing. Kirkby Stephen to Garsdale easily planned as both have stations. Lammerside Castle, Castlethwaite then along Mallerstang Edge to Hangingstone Scar and Hell Gill Bridge gave good walking and views as the cloud base lowered but High Seat was just a quick bag in the mist. Continued with scarp top walking, usefully at below 1500 ft, and descended to the Moorcock. | pwheeler | 05/06/1976 |
