| From Renwick straight up Thack Moor then ridge then fence over Watch Hill but then messed up cut across and nearly reached Black Fell through the crap! Followed fence on west to Tom Smiths Stone then to Gray Nag. Came back on east side 15 minutes faster - take note. | From Hartside Pass, Black Fell, Tom Smith’s Stone, Grey Nag, Tom Smith’s Stone, Watch Hill, Thack Moor, Watch Hill, Black Fell, Hartside Pass. Not as bad as it could have been. Good path to Black Fell, then deteriorates through lurid green bogs and self-levelling lakes of black peat, until routes coalesce just S of Tom Smith’s Stone around the perimeter of a super massive green hole MEB, from which water does not escape even at the end of Summer. Otherwise, ATV tracks alongside many fences/walls, especially on W arm of the ‘Y’. Stiles over walls at Watch Hill. A handy ATV track crosses Croglin Water at the point where the valley suddenly narrows (about NY643456). High P – nice weather? – pah! | Solo out and back from Whitley Castle Roman fort. Over Black Hill to Grey Nag then on to Tom Smith's Stone Top. Mainly over pathless moors with deep heather, tufted grass and lots of bogs. | From Thack Moor via WEatch Hill and Black Fell. Came of Watch Hill wondering whether to beeline or not to beeline and decided not to. Cut the corner near the top of Black Fell but would probably have been easier to have gone all the way to the summit and followed the fence line. Tedious peat hags but wind behind me. | Walked on my own from Gilderdale Bridge. A fine spring day with plenty of sunshine. Not a very inspiring summit but easy enough to find. Didn't go on from here to Black Fell as the ground was very wet. Retraced my steps to Grey Nag. | from Croglin. up well made tracks and out and back to Blotting raise. followed tracks as far as Lawyers cross then peat, heather, rough grass and water to Tom Smiths stone passing remains of D.H. venom. Dropped pack at toms and out and back to the nag. Not hard by any stretch of the imagination. just a tad wet and had been a long day. Trig and Cairn embedded in wall mark top lovely evening views. then off to Black Fell with a camp somewhere beyond. the section from Toms to Black fell is about as bad as i can recall. on a par with Armboth fell, Cold fell and Kilhope law. Peat groughs deep enough to hide an elephant. i was knackered by now too so the summit came as a huge relief.. glad i'd done it then and not left it for the morning. trig at the summit with superb views. the way out to Thack Moor is a delight. overnighted just short of watch hill. the following morning was a tad cloudier and the lakeland hills swathed in clouds. but still dry here at least. easy climb up from watch hil | stig_nest | 25/07/2015 |
| Parked in layby alongside telephone box. Headed SW past Whitley Castle Roman Fort on th Pennine Way to a track heading towards mine workings on Whitley Common. Long cling up to Grey Nag where the sheep shelter provided shelter from the strong wind. Then SW following boundary wall and fence to Tom Smith's Stone Top and then SE following boundary to Woldgill Burn then Gilderdale Burn to the footbridge an Pennine Way back to the start. 13km 440m ascent. | axe.stephen | 18/02/2015 |

| W Jenx. Very dry spell, took on the whole group as a fell run tour. Black Fell, Watch Hill, Thack Moor then back to Watch Hill and down into the cut with direct ascent to John Smith's Stone top then Grey Nag. Back over Black Fell. All bog areas dried out, but a very hot day which sapped energy, especially the hags on way back to Black Fell. Hart side cafe very welcome 3.14 hrs later!
