From Hartside Pass summit: Black Fell, Tom Smith's Stone Top and Grey Nag. Descended into Slaggyford and caught a taxi back to the car. Claggy, grey cold day.Lazylizzie30/09/2023

Nuttall walk 9.8, with R. Really enjoyed the walk down along Gilderdale Burn.Dan Baddeley03/06/2023
From Renwick straight up Thack Moor then ridge then fence over Watch Hill but then messed up cut across and nearly reached Black Fell through the crap! Followed fence on west to Tom Smiths Stone then to Gray Nag. Came back on east side 15 minutes faster - take note. On to Black Hill then Hartside and down bridleway and back road to car.SS17/04/2023
Afternoon walk after fiends fell and Melmerby Fell in the morning. Black Fell , Tom Smith's Stone Top and Grey Nag. Heavens opened ten minutes after I set off so aborted the idea of including Thack Moor.Longwojo20/05/2022
After a 9 mile slog south from Cold Fell, I finally arrived at Tom Smith's Stone Top with considerable relief!! What a tough section. This was day 2 of a 6 day backpack in the Northern Pennines.morgs4mountains22/03/2022
Climbed Black Fell, Tom Smith's, Grey Nag & Thack Moor from Hartside Summit on a clear but chilly day. Very wet underfoot, but easy walking otherwise. About 22km, with only 330m of ascent.oldbagger2722/11/2021
Gilderdale horseshoe from Gilderdale bridge layby - Grey Nag, Tom Smith's Stone Top, Blackfell, Hartside Height, Benty Hill and Scarberry Hill. Overcast, blowy day. With Gillian and Grahamrichard6913/11/2021

From Hartside Pass, Black Fell, Tom Smith’s Stone, Grey Nag, Tom Smith’s Stone, Watch Hill, Thack Moor, Watch Hill, Black Fell, Hartside Pass. Not as bad as it could have been. Good path to Black Fell, then deteriorates through lurid green bogs and self-levelling lakes of black peat, until routes coalesce just S of Tom Smith’s Stone around the perimeter of a super massive green hole MEB, from which water does not escape even at the end of Summer. Otherwise, ATV tracks alongside many fences/walls, especially on W arm of the ‘Y’. Stiles over walls at Watch Hill. A handy ATV track crosses Croglin Water at the point where the valley suddenly narrows (about NY643456). High P – nice weather? – pah! Cold wind, low cloud and mizzle, drizzle, rain, all day - it’s a Bank Holiday!Isbjorn30/08/2021

Solo out and back from Whitley Castle Roman fort. Over Black Hill to Grey Nag then on to Tom Smith's Stone Top. Mainly over pathless moors with deep heather, tufted grass and lots of bogs. Useful gates at approx 6904048316, 6859048096 and 6833348096 then over two fences and a wall.Glenelg03/06/2021

From Thack Moor via WEatch Hill and Black Fell. Came of Watch Hill wondering whether to beeline or not to beeline and decided not to. Cut the corner near the top of Black Fell but would probably have been easier to have gone all the way to the summit and followed the fence line. Tedious peat hags but wind behind me. On to Grey Nag.Wycombe Wanderer20/01/2020

Parked just off main road NW of Castle Nook. Up RoW then across to Little Heaplaw. Then following fence/wall to Grey Nag and Tom Smith's Stone Top plus a few other minor tops. Return route took me over Great Heaplaw.Dugswell217/05/2018

From Hartside via Black Fell. Bog and peat hags were much easier to cross than I had been led to believe. Route on western side of the fence from Black Fell, (which we used on return leg), seemed much easier.Winterfloodian10/08/2017
Walked over from Hartside café. Ground a bit damp in places despite all the recent dry weather. Headed out further west from the stone to the plane wreckage before heading up to here on the way back.Walker Dan31/05/2017
From ample parking near telephone box by A689 at Castle Nook (NY 69577 49046). Grey Nag > Grey Nag N Top > Tom Smith's Stone Top > Tom Smith's Stone. Back same way avoiding repeat ascent of Grey Nag by skirting the summit to the south. Fairly easy terrain with no peat hags!David Gradwell28/04/2017
Started from Slaggyford then to Grey Nag, then onto Tom Smith's Stone Top before heading to Tom Smith's Stone, then back via Wolf Cleugh. Glorious day with clear views of Blencartha and Skiddaw. Started a cairn with 4 white stones and an old post - feel free to add to it (post will probably blow over)NorthernWayfarer23/04/2017
Walked on my own from Gilderdale Bridge. A fine spring day with plenty of sunshine. Not a very inspiring summit but easy enough to find. Didn't go on from here to Black Fell as the ground was very wet. Retraced my steps to Grey Nag. Missed the path down from there but soon heard traffic on the 689 and made my way there and walked back to the Bridge on the road.flockwatcher05/03/2017
Black Fell, Tom Smith's Stone Top and Grey Nag from Hartside Cafe in strong winds. Mostly pathless except quad bike marks but fairly easy going except for peat hags between Black Fell and Tom Smiths Stone Top which could be quite bad in wet weather.clivevilla07/08/2016

THIRD CONSECUTIVE CLOUDLESS DAY AT ALSTON BASE CAMP. FOLLOWED NUTTALLS' WALK 9.8 FROM WHITLEY CASTLE UP LONG DRAG TO GREY NAG, THEN EASY WALK TO TOM SMITH'S STONE TOP BUT VERY BAD BOG ONTO BLACK FELL. THANKFULLY NEW BOOTS PROVED TOTALLY WATERPROOF BUT VERY SLOW GOING. THEN HEADED OFF OVER EASY TERRAIN TO NEW TOP AT THACK MOOR AND DOWN TO RENWICK WHERE PICKED UP BY WIFE. GLORIOUS SUNSHINE AND VIEWS ALL DAY.BURGESS28/09/2015
Walk to complete the English Nuttalls with Dad. Final one was Fiend's Fell.AGWilliamson26/09/2015
from Croglin. up well made tracks and out and back to Blotting raise. followed tracks as far as Lawyers cross then peat, heather, rough grass and water to Tom Smiths stone passing remains of D.H. venom. Dropped pack at toms and out and back to the nag. Not hard by any stretch of the imagination. just a tad wet and had been a long day. Trig and Cairn embedded in wall mark top lovely evening views. then off to Black Fell with a camp somewhere beyond. the section from Toms to Black fell is about as bad as i can recall. on a par with Armboth fell, Cold fell and Kilhope law. Peat groughs deep enough to hide an elephant. i was knackered by now too so the summit came as a huge relief.. glad i'd done it then and not left it for the morning. trig at the summit with superb views. the way out to Thack Moor is a delight. overnighted just short of watch hill. the following morning was a tad cloudier and the lakeland hills swathed in clouds. but still dry here at least. easy climb up from watch hilstig_nest25/07/2015
Parked in layby alongside telephone box. Headed SW past Whitley Castle Roman Fort on th Pennine Way to a track heading towards mine workings on Whitley Common. Long cling up to Grey Nag where the sheep shelter provided shelter from the strong wind. Then SW following boundary wall and fence to Tom Smith's Stone Top and then SE following boundary to Woldgill Burn then Gilderdale Burn to the footbridge an Pennine Way back to the start. 13km 440m ascent.axe.stephen18/02/2015

From Hartside up to Black Fell and along to Thack Moor. Fantastic views over to Solway Firth. Doubled back to Watch Hill and then down and up to the ridge between Black Fell and Tom Smith's Stone. On to the summit and then to Grey Nag, then down to where we'd left another car on the A689. Back to Hartside Cafe in time for tea and scones!ruthatlast09/08/2014
W Jenx. Very dry spell, took on the whole group as a fell run tour. Black Fell, Watch Hill, Thack Moor then back to Watch Hill and down into the cut with direct ascent to John Smith's Stone top then Grey Nag. Back over Black Fell. All bog areas dried out, but a very hot day which sapped energy, especially the hags on way back to Black Fell. Hart side cafe very welcome 3.14 hrs later! Great circuit and views.nordicstar26/07/2014
Too hot! Serious dehydration as we tried to run and didn't take enough water.jenx26/07/2014
With G. From A689 lay by at Gilderdale Burn. Followed track along burn to Pennine Way then left PW west of Whitley Castle to follow track to Whitley Common > Grey Nag > Tom Smith's Stone > Black Fell returning via Gilderdale Burn.RT197025/07/2014
Left tent on Black Fell at 8am, walked out to Thack Moor, back over Watch Hill and down into the Croglin. Up to TS's ST to Grey Nag then back along the ridge to Black Fell. One of the remotest feeling places I've been to in England, gorgeous country to be in on a hot day.Jake99424/07/2014
