From Clesketts RSPB car park up via mines path, return via Brown Fell following the fence. Not too boggy, good views from summit.webmaster16/03/2024
Road from the RSPB CP at Clesketts to Howgill then track/path all the way to Cold Fell. Continued along ATV tracks to Great Blacklaw Hill and Three Pikes. Returned by choosing a heavy heather slog westwards to an eventual track that runs through Geltsdale Middle. This continues as a ROW to Old Water Bridge then uphill to get around Tarnmonouth Fell and Brown Fell before descending back to Howgill.summitter05/12/2023

From the RSPB car park. Lovely day sunny with no wind and decent visibility. Was a bogfest the path wasn’t the best but there was a clear path to the summit. Views to the Lakes, Southern Uplands and Cheviots. Saw Curlews, Skylarks Meadow Pipits Red Grouse and first Willow Warbler of the year. Time taken 2 hours 10 minutes for 5.8 miles 1331 feet of ascent.isabelle08/04/2023

Route from forest head - not easy as mostly wading through brackenemily28/07/2021
from RSPB Geltsdale after a longish dry spell - this would be a boggy nightmare in usual Pennine conditions!wainwrighteer18/07/2021
A long walk! - From Newbiggin (Townhead) we rise through the wooded valley (Bovewood) to the disused quarry on the Col above. A good track follows Ellerbeck and New Water between Cumrew Fell and Middle Top. As we approach Tarnmonath Fell we swing into the valley of Old Water crossing by the fine Old Water Bridge. Finally we rise onto Tarnmonath Fell following faint tracks to Cold Fell beyond. Only ones at the top we linger to take in the immense view. Return a similar way with a late detour to bag the trig in Cumrew Fell as the setting sun turns the sky an intense orange.briandavies29/05/2021
Good track although slightly boggy from WNW sideconanharrod07/05/2021
From the RSPB car park to the north. ‘Track’ to the south of Howgill very muddy in places, and reasonably wet throughout despite the r3cent dry weather. Made a circuit by following the fence from the summit NW and down to the right of wayRockdoctor17/04/2021
Up as per Nuttalls route, but then down the same way as short for time and wanted to be sure of path, etc.maclrc15/09/2020
From grass verge in Forest Head. ROW across old quarry indistinct, with some surprising quarry cliffs to negotiate. ROW to Howgill very indistinct. Old track up the hill clear. Path continues up to the fence at NY 6095 5620, then good path beside fence to the summit. Hottest day of the year (so far). Hazy views. Return to Forest Head via track to Tortie, then ROW, also indistinct. Startled by two deer grazing in the scrub.Peter_W_Mitchell 31/07/2020

Parked RSPB CP near Clesketts, NY58875846. S along track to Howgill NY59195739, through vehicle gate then immediately left (E) though pedestrian gate. Follow path SE over small foot bridge to pick up old track onto the hillside NY59325727. Follow track, boggy in places, as it meanders SE to approx NY 60605649. I decided to strike out S to the summit from here. It involves some peat hags and heather. But nothing too unpleasant. Others have suggested going further E to pick up the old fence line. Higher up I found a path for the last couple of hundred metres to the summit. Large Cairn, circular shelter and trig point. 1hr30m up and 1hr down. Amateur radio operation at summit.geralddavison14/03/2020

With K and RM from RSPB carpark. Some intense navigation in heavy mist and snow.Ashley31/03/2018
With J from Clesketts RSPB car park. Along track to Howgill & then following the blue marked RSPB trail past the viewpoint. Ground not as soggy as expected but track on OS map is mostly no more than a path & after the first fence/stile, it becomes less distinct in places. Up to col at first grouse butt then across to inspect the giant currick due N. Back to col where you can avoid the rough stuff by going a few metres E of that first grouse butt to find an ATV track sliding round the side of Cold Fell to reach the OS marked fence where a decent path leads SW to the summit. Fired straight down the rough heathery stuff to rejoin the ascent route. Summit is a cracking viewpoint in all directions. A lot of grouse everywhere on the hill.NotReallyABagger25/03/2018
From RSPB carpark (NB good spot for campervan!) walked up track to Howgills, then took path up to watershed and south bearing up to summit. Beware: it is not a track as marked on OS map, but a hopelessly boggy path/ATV track, actually a stream in places. Where it kind of peters out look for a small cairn from where you go up rough ground (a vague ATV track comes and goes) to the huge summit cairn. The mist was low down today but the bearing was due south and the top was easy to find.AndrewFinnimore09/10/2017
Cold fell and talkin fellRuth01/10/2017
Very boggy in placesDarren-44326/08/2017
A nice route from the car park at Talkin Head, at the end of the public road. A fine track with great views leads towards Talkin Fell, climbed via a derelict track, then over the wall junction (no cap stones), and up to the huge cairns and trig. Then to Simmerson Hill, first on a good path to within a few hundred metres of the top, then rough stuff to the cairn (a stone seat). Down on rough stuff (good path by the fence, and I missed it), to the track, then a path along the fence to Cold Fell, a soggy, uninspiring struggle, but good views. Back to the track, and back to Talkin Head on the lovely bridleway.Gill03/08/2017
From Castle Carrock, up Geltsdale, over Tarnmonath and Cold Fell, drop to Tindale Tarn, then RSPB trails back towards Castle Carrock.cumbria mammoth08/07/2017
Evening walk on route to Whithaugh. Fine & dry with good views through saturated bracken.Vin07/07/2017
With SR. Parked at Clesketts at the car park. Headed S to Howgill then up track to col then south across rough moor and peat hags to the summit trig point. Return via above Tindale Tarn following the old railway track then back to the start.Frank11/05/2017
From Clesketts RSPB car park, on way from Warwick to Alston. Via RSPB viewpoint, tracks and trods all the way to the summit, finishing following the fence running NE of the top. Fine shelter with comfy slab facing E- into an icy breeze today; excellent views getting longer into the late afternoon. A real end of the Pennines atmosphere. Returned over N top and followed curricks down to neat Tindale Farm- as in Nuttalls' route.pwheeler05/05/2017
Cold Fell stands alone, five miles from the nearest fell, above the village of Hallbankgate and amidst possibly the most desolate landscape in the whole of England. The obvious place to start is the RSPB car park by the Geltsdale Nature Reserve. A tarmac track leads past the isolated Tortie Cottage and up to the old miners’ cottages at Howgill. Here, a gate leads to the wild fellside. On this Maundy Thursday, preceded by unseasonably warm weather at the weekend but much colder now, I set off up the hill on a surprisingly good path which flattened as a large currick came into view to the south. There was some difficulty finding a path on the final ascent until the last few hundred yards. A fence and stile were visible for a time, but only when I reached them did I realise that the trig point and windshelter were just a few yards further on. It was bitterly cold and windy but a seat had been fashioned in the shelter to protect the walker from the south-west wind.peter4lc13/04/2017

Walked on my own from Clesketts. Cold with snow in the wind but fairly dry and clear There was a really good path to the summit which I had no problem following. Didn't enjoy the walk over tussocky grass to Tindale Fell and down to the reservoir but was rewarded by unexpectedly coming upon the RSPB centre at the bottom with welcome loos and a great variety of birds on the feeders.flockwatcher22/01/2017

From the RSPB car park which was full. Cows on the easy track forced me to bushwhack and I ended up in waist high grass ascending directly very steeply up Brown Fell. Deep, soft moorland. An exhausting trudge but last week in nearby Brampton a woman was nearly killed by cows.On descent eventually found the track to Howgill but again crossed several barbed wire fences to avoid many cows with calves. On balance the roughest moorland I have ever walked on. In retrospect it may have been better to have been trampled to within an inch of my life by cows than walk the route I took. A lovely spot and a nature reserve but you cant make me go back I've done it now!mick13/09/2015

from Howgill - A very wet ascent up the old track led to open moor of peat and heather. a half decent path all the way. summit has a hefty cairn reminiscent of an american hard gum, a trigpoint which had a crown of stones and a very sizeable windbreak- which was very welcome today. man alive is this a stunning vista returned same way.stig_nest10/05/2015

Headed S on gravel track to Howgill then onto steeper track up the access land following the line of the valley to the end of the visible buggy line at a shooting butt. Turned south across rough moor and peat hags to the summit cairn and trig point. Lunch n the shelter from the strong SW wind. Park at RSPB carpark at Clesketts. Watch out for left turn at Howgill through gate then immediately right on grass track. Best route keeps going to summit fence. Return over currick (547m)and down to Tindale Tarn.sparkenhoeblank
