Parked near 599m spot height space a few metres from a gate. Revisit to bag the new featureless summit. | webmaster | 16/03/2024 |
Footpath through the wood, visited all areas. | robertphillips | 10/09/2023 |
Pretty rough bag from Nenthead mines CP. Followed sign for Flinty Fell then plodded across the fell with no path in sight but managed to visit both tops. Deciding we had had enough of the moor bailed to the road and walked down to Ashgill Force. Back to the car following sign to “Nenthead via Seldom Seen”. With R. | Dan Baddeley | 04/06/2023 |
From Nent Head - with GW - | JohnIvor | 17/05/2023 |
From the road, very indistinct unmarked summit. Probably the most underwhelming Nuttall so far, though there are good views of Cross Fell and Great Dunn Fell. Back through the wood. | Lazylizzie | 24/08/2022 |
Four tops in three short walks. First Round Hill from Tynehead road end, easy going. Then drove round to Flinty Fell from North, located unmarked summit with OS Locate. Then round to do Burnhope Seat and Dead Stones via the ski tow. This last also easy going but it would have been a different matter after a wet spell I suspect. | dickscroop | 07/07/2022 |
From the road, very indistinct unmarked “summit” | Jim T | 03/07/2022 |
Easy bag from road. Both tops | Longwojo | 18/06/2022 |
Ascent from Nenthead by the Nuttalls' route, visiting both tops, then ROW though wood to road and on to Alston Moor. | milimana | 07/05/2022 |
From footpath to NW. This time visited the new summit as well as original summit. | RobertP | 09/04/2022 |
My final summit on day 4 of a 6 day backpack. When I had read the Nuttalls book, my expectations of this hill were rather limited. I loved the hill as it provided great views and I camped on the summit as the moss was very dry indeed. A very comfortable night! | morgs4mountains | 24/03/2022 |
Very easy walk from Nenthead. Carried on to Ashgill, up the skiing to Burnhope Seat. And horrible walk along to Dead Stones, Nag's Head, Knoutberrry Hill and back to Nenthead. Take gaiters next time! 12.5m all round. | NCurtis | 26/02/2022 |
Revisit for the trig block - revisited main summit, then found it on the N summit | RHW | 14/11/2021 |
From Nenthead | emily | 17/09/2021 |
The third hill on a 93km walk from Gateshead to Alston. | Christo1979 | 05/09/2021 |
The hill might be easy, but parking is no so easy. Walls and fences deter an ascent along the E boundary of the woods. The grass verges are narrow, have deep veg and steep/deep ditches. The only ‘safe’ parking was in a passing place (challenging social acceptability) just below the PF signpost. The start of the FP into the woods was very wet in spite of a week of sunshine, but then a nice green passage, over a stile and through some old spoil heaps. | Isbjorn | 28/08/2021 |
ticked both old summit location and updated position - underwhelming! Only worth visiting for purely bagging reasons! | wainwrighteer | 18/07/2021 |
By MTB | Pete Pozman | 02/06/2021 |
Easy from NW despite big trot at end | conanharrod | 29/05/2021 |
A 22 kilometre hike from Killhope Cross via Nag's Head, Dead Stones, the south end of Perry's Dam, Flinty Fell, Nenthead, Dykeheads, The Dodd, Coalcleugh, Shivery Hill, Killhope Law and the county boundary back to Killhope Cross. | Clach Liath | 16/04/2021 |
From Nenthead lead mines, up the track to quarry at the North, thn tried to follow the path marked on the map from South of the summit that leads ENE, but even with a GPS on it it was difficult to spot, many grouse posts in various directions, so just generally followed the right direction to end up back at the junction with the main mine track, back down to the car for lunch and then off up to the Dodd. | JulieB | 27/11/2020 |
A short stroll from the road. With B and R. | jenx | 09/11/2020 |
Revisit using Nuttalls' route from Nenthead to find revised summit following LIDAR revision. New top could be anywhere really on a large area of flat grass and moss, just north of the quarry. I found the point identified by LIDAR but it looked no higher or lower than anything else within 100 yards. The old summit on a long grassed over spoil mound looked higher. | Crib Goch | 11/10/2020 |
Solo | Madjonny | 21/09/2020 |
Cheeky bag from the road on the way home. | maclrc | 15/09/2020 |
First Nuttall of the day, joined by Jake. Nice easy walk from the road. Jake enjoyed dropping stones down the mine to see how deep it was. | simocity | 31/08/2020 |
1st Nuttall of the day with my Dad. | Jake Simpson | 31/08/2020 |
From summit of road. No cairn at the top of the spoil heap. No feature at highest natural ground either. Back via forest ROW. When the Sitka Spruce is harvested (soon?), can we have some native broadleaves? | Peter_W_Mitchell | 06/08/2020 |
Followed path through the conifers to the summit on a misty morning. | JohnW | 01/08/2020 |
Cowshill to Middlehope Moor via High Greenfield. Along county boundary to Stangend Rigg to Killhope Law. Continue along county boundary Black Hill Quarries to The Dodd. Return to public footpath (Isaac’s Tea Trail) and descent to Dykeheads and Nenthead. Out to Nenthead Lead Mine and ascent via public footpath to Flinty Fell. Descent to track and follow track to Perry Dam. Ascent to Nag’s Head and on to Dead Stones. Return to Cowshill via Lamb’s Head, Highwatch Currick and Cleugh Head. | raymooremanx | 11/07/2020 |

Footpath through wood. Also visited natural highpoint. | PGCE | 16/05/2020 |
Dusk ascent from 591, light rain. Contender for easiest and least exciting Nuttall. | Wycombe Wanderer | 17/01/2020 |
From Middle Fell head for Flinty Fell, descend to Showside then to the road and back to the start. | smocks and denims | 19/12/2019 |
Parked by start of PF to west. | mart0797 | 25/07/2019 |
Haggs Bank campsite along Isaac's Tea Trail to Nenthead. Up through Dowgang Hush and followed walls to NY 771 424 then direct to summit. | dgresty | 20/06/2019 |

Took the easy path through the trees from NY7661042399 with Andy snowing at the top | colinfielding | 08/03/2019 |
Quick up and down from the road in the wind and snow. Interesting top. With Colin. | Andrew Pearson | 08/03/2019 |
From NY 7662 4238, RoW through woodland then across open fell - peat hags - to the South Top (an Elmslie). Returning over the main top, that appears to be a spoil heap. | jonglew | 06/03/2019 |
revisit to visit local Elmslies | cjo | 17/02/2019 |
Planned to do Burnhope Seat circuit as per Nuttalls, but high winds diverted us to coffee shop then this less strenuous hill. We still got wet, though. | IanHHill | 03/11/2018 |

10 mile walk from Ashgill Bridge, down to lovely waterfall then along river S. Tyne to Tynehead farm, took footpath up then ascended Burnhope Seat to road then through ski tows to featureless summit and after trig, followed ridge to Dead Stones then along to Nags Head rise, descended to Perrys dam and picked up quarry track, rough route across to Flinty Fell, from there headed back to quarry track then barely used footpath back to Ashgill Bridge. Great sunny day with breeze and great views, at the moment very easy to walk because all bogs are dry, would hate to do this walk after a lot of rain. | DanTrig | 29/06/2018 |
CW circuit of Flinty Fell, Nags Head, Dead Stones & Burnhope Seat, starting from Ashgill Bridge - fine weather - a bit too hot! | ger | 06/05/2018 |
Pointless summit if you ask me | Darren-443 | 26/08/2017 |
There were two summits of apparently equal height and I climbed them both. This must be the easiest Hewitt to climb, with an ascent of 34 metres and just a few hundred yards from the road. | peter4lc | 13/04/2017 |
6th nuttall of day. Ascended from the quarry access path to the S, then through the quarry itself. Not recommended. Suggest access from W path or cut track 300m short. Solo. | Tom D | 07/04/2017 |
With K. and Others. Repeat of 23/01/2017. Bentyfield Mine NY 750 424 > Alston Moor > Nenthead > Flinty Fell via Dowgang Hush > Bentyfield Mine | RT1970 | 21/02/2017 |

Walked on my own from Nenthead Mining Centre. Sunny and clear. A lovely Sunday afternoon stroll. Take care, once you leave the path, there are a lot of drainage channels running across the moor. You could end up with very wet feet! | flockwatcher | 02/10/2016 |
Nuttall Walk EN 10.3 Flinty Fell from Nenthead. 6km with 200m ascent in 1h 30m. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 08/08/2016 |
From road. No distance but there is a fairly high wall with no gate just before the top. Luckily there are plenty of stones sticking out that you can use to climb it. | clivevilla | 22/10/2015 |
QUICK EARLY MORNING OUT AND BACK FROM NEAREST POINT ON ROAD BEFORE GOING ON TO WALK ELSEWHERE FROM ALSTON BASE CAMP. CLOUDLESS SKY (AGAIN) AND EXCELLENT VIEWS. | BURGESS | 27/09/2015 |
With G., M&J+Fam. From Nenthead mines. | RT1970 | 09/08/2015 |
Lovely stroll on clear and sunny day following Nuttalls route | celticrambler | 04/04/2015 |
Revisited to visit highest natural ground as well as the summit | isabelle | 01/04/2015 |
From top of road. Walked in a circle trying to find a gate in the wall. Use track by Dowgang Hush to gain easy access. | mick | 25/11/2014 |
from minor road, as easy as they get. clear when i arrived. conditions over the pass from high force had been foggy to say the least. a quick wander around before driving to the dodd/kilhope law. | stig_nest | 20/09/2014 |
With Jo, circular walk from Nenthead: well sign posted but invisible on ground footpaths to moor, then followed fence/wall right to Middle Fell tripillar (easier crossing fence into adjacent field at GR NY 75209 43985 and then over 2nd fence), then back to Alston Moor (Middle Fell), (easier crossing at wall corner GR NY 74944 43776) and onto Flinty Fell returning through mine areas. Weather; sunny, light breeze, warm, good visibility. | amblerbob | 20/07/2014 |
ROW through firebreak then easily up to top | Bramley | 18/07/2014 |
Nuttalls' route from Nenthead. | davidpettit84 | 12/07/2014 |

Parked just off the minor road to the NW and followed the RoW through the forest. Easy slopes to the summit. | Sprog | 30/11/2013 |

From Nenthead | rhalstead | 22/02/2013 |
Sadly, the Nenthead Mines museum was in receivership as that looked interesting. Took the track up to the quarry, across the bogs to the summit and then down through Dowgang Hush which was lovely. Up and down in 2 hours. | tsharp | 20/08/2012 |
Climbed solo from the road via the forest track. | dhbond | 21/06/2012 |
Short ascent by track around forest to mine buildings from small lay-by on Dowgang Hush, then rough-going to summit. Summit on man-made hillock. Many midges in forest - got bitten alive! | Man of Kernow1 | 25/05/2012 |
Head of road 2km SW of Nenthead – Path along the edge of forest to summit of Flinty Fell – Reverse. (PM,CM) | gerrybowes | 17/04/2012 |

Walk 1: Nuttalls' Killhope Law Route; Walk 2: Flinty Fell; Walk 3: Cold Fell. Amazing clear blue skies, no wind & all bog frozen solid. Enjoyed amazing sunset from Cold Fell, with views across inversion to Lakes. | AGWilliamson | 13/01/2012 |
KeithByTheC | 12/10/2011 | |
Frightened the life out of a rabbit basking on the flinty pile below the summit at 2.25pm! People hard at work dry stone walling so went back to car via path through conifers rather than hopping over any walls. For once a Pennine top that isn't a bog! | signyred | 24/08/2011 |
A solo peak bagging day. From 757383 walk to Round Hill, then drive to 769426 and walk to Flinty Fell, then drive to 853432 and walk to Middlehope Moor. | Glenelg | 27/07/2011 |
My last summit of the day having walked 20.5 miles in 1 day i was happy with that | Turbo Tango | 26/07/2011 |
Not alot there, just some stones if that!! I had to use the GPS to work where the highest point was..Nice clear day too. | Mc Tango | 26/07/2011 |
Possibly the easiest Nuttall? From the minor road to Nenthead, through the wood and then onto the old workings summit straight ahead. The natural summit is to the South. | Fisky Boy | 15/05/2011 |
With Fisky Boy | Brenda Cloke | 15/05/2011 |
