From Beacon Edge [Road] up the main path. A little quickie en route to Galloway. | IanHHill | 07/05/2023 |
Easy up-and-down from our B&B in Penrith. The view of the Lake District is surprisingly very good. In all other directions there's just trees which renders the toposcope not as useful as it should be. First hill of the day. Afterwards we drove to and bagged Lambrigg Fell and Summerhouse Hill. | DanTrig | 05/03/2023 |
Late in the afternoon. Lovely display of decorated Christmas trees. | Crumblie2 | 27/12/2022 |

A good place for some fresh air and exercise if, like me, you are constantly up and down the M6/M74. | summitter | 01/11/2022 |

Parked outside of the Crematorium, walked up the path through the woods. Surprisingly warm day for September. | M6KIO | 05/09/2022 |
Roadside parking due south at the start of the access track (CA11 8BJ). Excellent, well used, track right to the summit, There is a stone diorama close to the summit which is utterly pointless as trees block the view in every direction. | moorsman | 03/08/2022 |
Hot 59 minute walk from home for my 100th recorded visit. Down to Ash Road up to Primrose Drive to footpath up to Beacon Edge then Stagsstone Road to entrance to east of Beacon Hill to Penrith Beacon. Christmas Day Plan B as a sprained ankle scuppered my plan to climb Mickle Fell. Parked on Beacon Edge at NY521309 and hobbled up the good path that leads all the way to the summit. | Tony J | 25/12/2020 |
Parked on Fell Road and followed track up and down. Good views over to a rainy Lake District | Jephcote83 | 16/12/2020 |
Easy route up on signed path. | Play2End | 16/07/2020 |
From 521309, a good path and then about 100 yds after the bend a direct path to the summit beacon. Shame the litter louts gather there.
Solo in rain. | bolton | 26/06/2020 |
Short walk up from top of town, took path beside Caroline's Cottage, winds up through trees to the summit. Impressive view to Lakes, some other directions now obscured by trees but a grand view of Lowther Castle. | nickywood1 | 13/06/2020 |

With family enroute to a week in the Lake District. | benalder284 | 12/10/2019 |
Permissive path from the south. Crossed forestry NUP notice. Nice wooded hill, in 30 minutes I encountered 11 adults, 3 dogs, a toddler on his dad's shoulders and not a trace of any ongoing forestry work, so ripped notice down on way out. | Topographer57 | 28/08/2019 |
Walked up and back from Premier Inn via path at corner of Fell Lane and Beacon Edge. I hour round trip | trimarc2 | 16/07/2019 |
Parked to the South on road NY521309. | David Evans | 20/04/2019 |
Lovely short walk, bit steep up but not long. Great walk down and we saw a deer. | Debconlin | 13/04/2019 |
Approach from S. Quite pleasant with some views. | ger | 07/04/2019 |
Parked on residential street to South -Beacon Edge and followed well used path which zig zags up through mixed woodland to summit. In clearing there is a red sandstone tower with high class graffiti and cut mark and bolt by door. Topograph. Recently felled trees give good views over lakeland fells, with snow in gulleys. Extremely peasant evening stroll, birds singing... spring is coming. | Denise | 18/03/2019 |
With Bryher, first but not last time in 2019 | nordicstar | 11/01/2019 |

Parked half on wide pavement 70yd W. of the Fell Lane/Beacon Edge junction at 521309. Up wide track through woods & about 120yd after hairpin bend took steep narrow path up to summit tower. (S) | gerrybowes | 04/11/2017 |
with Nick, Tom, Henry, Emma, Jacob & Oscar | Jacqdaw | 24/10/2017 |
From Beacon Edge | hillsman | 05/10/2017 |
Visited on drive between stays at Keswick and Staveley. As others, from Beacon Edge. We cut the top zigzag on the way up, using informal paths. The topograph is of little use, though returning using the main path, there was a small gap in the trees through which the fells and the foot of Ullswater could be admired. With Pete. | pwheeler | 03/10/2017 |
More direct up through the woods by a narrow path. | jenx | 02/10/2017 |
Out for a walk whilst parked up in Penrith for the night, up via golf course and straight back down. | Chipstertrain | 16/08/2017 |
Up from Beacon Hill on sandy track. No views due to foliage-it's a shame as the views from Beacon Edge are excellent. With Oscar. | catman | 10/08/2017 |
Walked up from Beacon Edge on good track. 1GL bolt on the 1719 beacon at the top. ***1 Aug 2018 re-ascent: With son and grand-nippers. | jonglew | 28/07/2017 |
With Jenx and Bryher. Up from the road by shortest line, track through woods, then out to SE following the access lane to masts having crossed a gate in woods. Looped back around bottom Southern edge of forest to start, nice circuit. | nordicstar | 08/07/2017 |
From Fell Lane/Beacon Edge. | summitsup | 07/04/2017 |
Main track circuit and summit 4.7 km and 90 m of ascent.
Cold Easterly but fine. | iredale | 06/02/2017 |

Dash up en route to bagging few more repeats in 2016 | nordicstar | 05/12/2016 |
Had 2 hours in Penrith before my train so decided to nip up this one. Pity there are no views of the Lakes from the top (trees) but a nice walk up on a good path. Obvious route up from S is obvious although there are shorter, steeper short cuts. | Mark Jackson | 27/10/2016 |
What a contrast from my previous beacon of the morning (16092 Whinfell Beacon) - warm, sunny and autumnal forest. Its a great walk on the permissive path. A sort of view from the top through a break in the trees - perhaps those who put the toposcope on the summit 20 years ago could come back and do a bit of trimming. it is all private woodlands and, according to the notices according to section 31 of the Highways Act (1980) affixed to many of the gates and fences by the 'Special personal representatives of the 7th Earl of Lonsdale (Deceased)' even if you are dead you can still make sure it stays that way. Stick to the permissive path. | M3WDD | 25/09/2016 |
As others from road to south, parking half on pavement at NY 52073 30989. | David Gradwell | 16/09/2016 |
with renee good path from beacon edge. | robertphillips | 29/07/2016 |
Parking on minor road opposite start of permissive path directly to the south. As others have said shame you can see nothing for all the trees! | Fisky Boy | 12/07/2016 |
With Fisky Boy. | Brenda Cloke | 12/07/2016 |
By the main footpath | jenx | 08/07/2016 |
The road Beacon Edge was really busy when I was there, so parked just down Fell Lane, where it felt much safer. Easy paths to beacon at summit. | Minto | 28/04/2016 |
With Joe,Jill, Matthew, Greta and Mag. Date is only roughly correct. A fine day with good views. Need to open vista from viewpoint orientation table or else the plaque will be redundant. | iredale | 01/09/2015 |

climbed by path from near cemetary to S. Top has a view-finder and a tower/folly.
Very pleasant..... | maknipe | 03/10/2007 |
Parked at the entrance to the permissive path, then dropped down to the bus station to get the required drop. Snow covered the ground on the top and views could be had back to the lakes and Howgills. | garyhoney | 02/01/2005 |
Galltywenallt | 25/08/2003 | |
pleasant urban hill, toposcope but view fairly restricted by trees (easy path - in darkness). Penrith: permissve FP from street immed to S | RHW | 16/11/2001 |
Parked on main road and followed permissive path with tall wire fence on both sides to top at 10.20. Most views soon to be obscured by tree growth. Very unwelcoming feel. | arranc | 07/02/2000 |
Penrith Beacon, a sandstone monument built in 1719, on a spot where beacons have been lit in times of war and emergency since the time of Henry VIII. The beacon forewarned of numerous Scottish raids over the centuries. In 1980 inter-city electric locomotive 86255 was named Penrith Beacon, recognising the watch kept over a town with a long railway history. Visitors to the Beacon used to sign a book in the porch of Carroline Cottage further along Beacon Edge road from the start of the current permissive path. Repeat visit with L before Race the Sun marshalling 27/08/2015 | Chris Pearson | 25/04/1997 |
