From Beacon Edge [Road] up the main path. A little quickie en route to Galloway.IanHHill07/05/2023
Easy up-and-down from our B&B in Penrith. The view of the Lake District is surprisingly very good. In all other directions there's just trees which renders the toposcope not as useful as it should be. First hill of the day. Afterwards we drove to and bagged Lambrigg Fell and Summerhouse Hill.DanTrig05/03/2023
Late in the afternoon. Lovely display of decorated Christmas trees.Crumblie227/12/2022

Roadside parking due south at the start of the access track (CA11 8BJ). Excellent, well used, track right to the summit, There is a stone diorama close to the summit which is utterly pointless as trees block the view in every direction.moorsman03/08/2022

From 521309, a good path and then about 100 yds after the bend a direct path to the summit beacon. Shame the litter louts gather there. Solo in rain.bolton26/06/2020
Short walk up from top of town, took path beside Caroline's Cottage, winds up through trees to the summit. Impressive view to Lakes, some other directions now obscured by trees but a grand view of Lowther Castle.nickywood113/06/2020

Permissive path from the south. Crossed forestry NUP notice. Nice wooded hill, in 30 minutes I encountered 11 adults, 3 dogs, a toddler on his dad's shoulders and not a trace of any ongoing forestry work, so ripped notice down on way out.Topographer5728/08/2019

Approach from S. Quite pleasant with some views.ger07/04/2019
Parked on residential street to South -Beacon Edge and followed well used path which zig zags up through mixed woodland to summit. In clearing there is a red sandstone tower with high class graffiti and cut mark and bolt by door. Topograph. Recently felled trees give good views over lakeland fells, with snow in gulleys. Extremely peasant evening stroll, birds singing... spring is coming.Denise 18/03/2019

Visited on drive between stays at Keswick and Staveley. As others, from Beacon Edge. We cut the top zigzag on the way up, using informal paths. The topograph is of little use, though returning using the main path, there was a small gap in the trees through which the fells and the foot of Ullswater could be admired. With Pete.pwheeler03/10/2017
More direct up through the woods by a narrow path.jenx02/10/2017

Had 2 hours in Penrith before my train so decided to nip up this one. Pity there are no views of the Lakes from the top (trees) but a nice walk up on a good path. Obvious route up from S is obvious although there are shorter, steeper short cuts.Mark Jackson27/10/2016
What a contrast from my previous beacon of the morning (16092 Whinfell Beacon) - warm, sunny and autumnal forest. Its a great walk on the permissive path. A sort of view from the top through a break in the trees - perhaps those who put the toposcope on the summit 20 years ago could come back and do a bit of trimming. it is all private woodlands and, according to the notices according to section 31 of the Highways Act (1980) affixed to many of the gates and fences by the 'Special personal representatives of the 7th Earl of Lonsdale (Deceased)' even if you are dead you can still make sure it stays that way. Stick to the permissive path.M3WDD25/09/2016

Penrith Beacon, a sandstone monument built in 1719, on a spot where beacons have been lit in times of war and emergency since the time of Henry VIII. The beacon forewarned of numerous Scottish raids over the centuries. In 1980 inter-city electric locomotive 86255 was named Penrith Beacon, recognising the watch kept over a town with a long railway history. Visitors to the Beacon used to sign a book in the porch of Carroline Cottage further along Beacon Edge road from the start of the current permissive path.
