Circular walk taking in Hirwaun Common, Mynydd Tynewydd [Mynydd Ystradffernol],Craig y Llyn & Craig y Llyn (boundary)Arbie23/03/2020
Parked at 92250 02087 the car park was closed for some reason but still plenty of space for several cars in front of the barrier. Followed forest roads to the edge of the trees south of top and then followed the boggy track north, One hour 30 minutes for just under Five miles and a good view north.WAYNE ROWLETT21/03/2020
From the main road viewpoint. Walked along very busy road and took rough track round the top of the scarp. Great views of the Brecon Beacons. Industrial spoil down below. There and back in 75 minutes. Final RCT Tump. Interesting county with some great scenery.Campbell Singer01/09/2019
Parked at 923027 - walked in via wind farm tracks - light breeze and clear - very warmwychwood19/04/2019
From the viewpoint car park on the A 4061. Took an ATV track that follows the escarpment edge all the way to the summit. Much easier than the direct route. With MP and AD.Man of Kernow125/08/2018
From near viewpoint lay-by. Along road, then took ATV track to gate. Should have followed the ATV track which went the long way along the edge. Instead headed directly for summit. More sheep needed as grass was long and tussocky. Fortunately very dry. Eventually reached fence and followed ATV track rest of the way to HP. Good views. Came back following ATV track all the way.PeterD05/08/2018
Followed gerrybowes directions successfully. 2.29 miles 51 mins.clivevilla14/03/2018
Parked on hardstanding in area of wasteland E. of viewpoint/car park at SN93044 03332 - Across road & headed over to fence - Followed fence along edge of forest to a small metal gate by corner of forest at 943003 - From gate headed N. along an ATV track to unmarked summit. Very tussocky at start of walk & boggy by source of Afon Rhondda Fach. (S)gerrybowes02/02/2018
From the Hen Dre'r Mynydd car park on A4061. 8 mile circular walk to do Mynydd Tynewydd first and a couple of trig pillars also. Rights of Way, wind farm roads, rough wet tussock grass, hacking through conifer plantations, had it all on this walk. Got badly bogged down around source of the Afon Rhondda Fach - would not recommend going anywhere near here in damp weather, thigh deep! Also found walking directly beneath massive wind turbines in full speed mode a little unnerving.jonglew11/01/2017
Day walk Treorchy to Hirwaun Commonunderhill03/10/2015
Parked in A4061 viewpoint car park. Yomp across very rough groundRamblingpaul28/07/2015
Bank Holiday walk from Aberdare station to see the various Bronze Age cairns up here. Extended dry spells during April have made what could be a bog quite navigable. The cairns are decent too, with superb views from Y Mynydd Du across to the Black Mountains. Came up via Craig y Bwllfa and looped back through the foresst past Twyn Rhondda Resr and back via Craig Penrhiw-llechthesweetcheat04/05/2015
From rough layby below main one which has been taken over by the turbine constructors! Big swing out to the north both out and back to avoid the worst of the ankle twisting tussock grass. Meant got some good views until you looked down on the open cast pit.SS18/03/2015
4/7 Not easy to get to ! Parked at layby and walked to edge of forest. Made mistake of crossing straight to top. Ground boggy and difficult to cross, came back by hugging the edge of forest, Mixed ground conditions that wayFergalh14/03/2015
Approached from forest at SN 94323 03284. There's a good quad bike track going to the summit. Went back to forest edge and followed a series of tracks back on the edge of the forest to the view point. Whole of forest a building site (wind farm). Rides leading to forest edge from Mynydd Ystradffe quite difficult to walk. A mixture of bog and hummock grass with no real path with the stretches of forest road, mainly upgraded for use by lorries.MikeM27/02/2015
Craig y llyn, Boundary and Hirwaun Common from main road layby.rhalstead11/01/2014
With Val. Parked viewpoint car park. Slog through tussocks. Climbed this in the afternoon after climbing Mynydd y Glyn in the morning.mike.hoult10/12/2013
From Viewpoint (burger van...) to gate at corner of verge/wood at 933 035, then no path but there was a kind of 'flattened grass' track going ENE in the tussocky grass which helped - the grass was a bu**er to walk through otherwise, up to the ridge/fence 250m NW of cairn. V Hot day so no boggy bits or swamps as mentioned by others. Oh, the tundra was on fire as someone obviously dropped a fag. Made it a bit more exciting as otherwise a dull walk but great views.dicky08/06/2013
13 mile walk from Cwmdare, bagging Mynydd Bwlfa trig then walking along edge to summit of Hirwaun Common, down to A4061, up to Craig-Y-Llyn summit, then walked back along Coed Morgannwg Way back to Cwmdare.DanTrig31/05/2013
Start ~ View point at 926031steve hudson18/02/2013
From viewing area. Slog over fairly long grass and tussocks. No path. Took forest edge on return. Much better until the bog at the 120° bend. Not going back. Good bacon sandwich at viewing area.destaylor31/01/2013
First hill walk of 2013. I parked at the Dare Valley Country Park and had a stroll with some old friends before setting off on my own with my dog to come up here and grab a geocache, trig point and this hill. So mild for January.Father Ted05/01/2013
This was a right slog, also took in Mynydd Tynewydd from the Picnic Site. Lots of snow underfoot along the forest rides. Glad I had GPS to locate the high point. However the paper map was invaluable to navigate through the forest.isabelle05/11/2012
Circular walk to Mynydd Bwllfa. This location reached on return walk to parking spot. Very wet underfoot.Dusty30/05/2010
walked from hirwaun up a steep slope with impressive cliffs summit near a small cairnhodder21/08/2007
Easy climb up over long grass from the viewpoint car park. Best part of walk in the continuation to the trig. no obvious summit markerRhayader_wander14/05/2007
