From the layby on the A686.robertphillips15/12/2023
On from Pike Rigg. The wettest feet ever. With B. She loved every minute.jenx23/10/2023
P layby as others. E side of fence then on N side heading SW. Follow white plastic poles - QBT. Then headed back meeting main fence N of where I crossed. Onto Whitfield Law and Pike Rigg. A few flakes of snow. Ground very wet - just as well it hasn't rained much.chrisbien05/03/2023
Start from Grid 741510. parking area off the A686. Cross the road and follow the fence up to Whitfield Law. then follow the Atv track to the Trig point of Pike Rigg. return to Grid 734517 and follow the fence to Tarn Rigg then to 534 spot ht of Ayle common. return to Grid 734517 and follow the fence back to the road. Faint tracks and some ATV tracks rough ground over bog most of the way. Better doing this in the summer.smocks and denims28/10/2022
The best thing I can say about this hill is that at least it doesn't involve peat hags. From parking spot to east. On to Pike Rigg.Wycombe Wanderer28/08/2022
Good parking in large lay-by at NY740510. Through kissing gate, then the faintest of intermittent, rough, trods through heather and bog, along E side of fence to stile at NY736514. Then even this trod vanishes in a zone of MEBs, with the smell of death in the air from one of their victims (decaying ensnared, dead, sheep). Improves after 2nd, rickety, stile at NY728527, where joins wall to Whitfield Law, then good ATV track to Pike Rigg. Return to fence junction at NY734517, crossed SW then immediately confronted by flooded hags and MEBs, remaining veg on S side of fence not as daunting as it initially looks, then ATV track after 2nd group of wooden hurdles. Back to fence junction, 1st stile and the abominable initial trod back to kissing gate. No water sources en route. Better left for Winter, on skis.Isbjorn11/08/2022
From county boundary. Took fairly direct route to Ayle Common, then following fences / walls to Pike Rigg. Followed fences back to road then by edge of forest and up to Hard Rigg (summit N of wall) and ground just to NW. Dry spell so terrain not to difficult.RobertP25/03/2022
From A686 to SSE. Large area for parking at NT 741 510. Followed fence to Whitfield Law then > Pike Rigg. Returned along the same route to the fence NE of Ayle Common and then followed fence > Ayle Common. Not easy walking through rough grass and heather, and a lot of spongy ground even after a dry period - expect a harder time after rain.JohnR08/09/2021

3/5 Dewey Day. A medley of 5 Deweys around Alston from nearby roads: Hard Rigg, Pike Rigg, Ayle Common, Alston Moor and Park Fell. (S)silveracorn_alan18/05/2021
From large dirt pull-in near county line (NY 7411 5104). Took a direct line across soggy moorland. On to Pike Rigg.jonglew11/05/2021
After pike rigg the. Direct to car across essentially dry ground.cjo24/04/2021
Parked in layby on A686 near the county boundary. Fence lines to Pike Rigg, back to Whitfield Law then direct line to Ayle Common. Direct line back to car.PGCE17/02/2021
Parked of the A686 at NY 74109 51043 near the county boundary. Entered the moor by a kissing gate, following the fence on the Northumbrian side NW to a stile. Then made a beeline for the summit through Hope Cleuch - not recommended due to bogs. After Pike Rigg, followed the wall and fence SW then south on tracks. Then ATV tracks and pathless walking SW over the two tops of Ayle Common. Returned east along the fence line to join my outward route. Solo. Watch out for hidden bogs - I fell in a deep one on Willyshaw Rig and had some difficulty extracting myself. 10.5km, with 170m of ascent. 4hrs 30mins.Man of Kernow128/09/2020
Parked in layby on A686 at 741 510, followed fences to Ayle Common then fences and wall to Pike Rigg returning same way.dgresty11/07/2020
Parked in the lay by at 74109 51044 on the A686 on the county boundary. first visiting Pike Rigg following fence and wall where soon the trig becomes visible, returned to the fence junction you passed on the way to Pike Rigg at 73424 51762 and followed this to Ayle Common. returned the same way back to the car where I headed South East for Hard Rigg following the edge of the plantation and then the wall to reach the summit which is on the left side of the wall as you look at the hill. Around Four hours for the combined Nine miles.WAYNE ROWLETT07/06/2020

From Parking at County boundary. Chose a dry spell but still found little path and lots of wet boggy sections except higher ground. Out to Pike Rigg trig, back same way in fence line and diverted to pick up Ayle Common. Was aiming to run the route, hah! 10 km took me nearly 90 minutes. Better than walking I guessnordicstar03/08/2019
After missing this hill when doing Pike Rigg, returned and bagged it along with Hard Rigg. A light dusting of snow on the ground and extremely boggy. Followed the fence from the road, over the stile to the fence that takes you up to the summit. Snowing on the top. Decided to head back to the stile via the way the crow flies across one big bog (not advisable). Headed back to the road and then up Hard Rigg (more bog).NorthernWayfarer28/10/2018
Start ~ Layby 740510. Followed fence to Pike Rigg and returned via Ayle Common. Moor bone dry thankfully, wouldn't fancy the route in the rainy season. With Wombourne.steve hudson15/07/2018
Parked layby at GR 740510 and followed feint path along the fence to Ayle Common then on to Pike Rigg. Still one or two boggy areas despite the long hot dry period. Would not be pleasant in a wet period. With SH.wombourne15/07/2018
Surprisingly pleasant walk with virtually dry underfoot conditions and glorious sunshine. Out to Pike Rigg by the fence, returning to Tran Rigg via fence. Dropped back staying on grass towards Leipsic but cut to track.SS19/05/2018
Parked in layby on county boundary then followed the East Side of the fence to Whitfield Law where there is a more distinct path to summit. Then returned via Ayle Common on a very sunny morning.Dugswell219/05/2018
Parked in layby on county boundary at 741510 – Through gate & best to head up W. side of fence where there are bits of path & some old duck boarding – At ladder stile crossed over to E. side of fence & followed fence line to Pike Rigg – On return, headed SW from fence junction at 734517 – Started up S. side of fence, at gate over to N. side, and finally back over to S. side & a short walk to unmarked summit. From Pike Rigg headed back to 734517 and then followed the fence to the summit with GB. Did the alternative as well.bolton18/07/2017
From County Boundary on A686. Solo. Bagged both summitsDangerous Dave20/05/2017
Parked in good parking spot at NY 74484 50109. Walked across road to fence line running over the moor and followed this over Willyshaw Moss. Not too wet. There are some walk boards in various places in the first part of the walk. Onto Whitfield Law and then N to Pike Rigg. Reversed route to close to second cross fence and then over to Ayle Common taking in Tarn Rigg. Dropped down to the Ayle Burn at NY 73119 50162. Crossed Burn. Easy in the conditions. Up to pick up the Issac's Tea Trail and followed this to Long Cross. Turned R and followed wall to Hard Rigg. Notice says 'keep to track' as is a SSSI. No track so jumped over wall into forest. Ground wet. Came back down through SSSI following an old quod bike track to Long Cross and down all the way to the A686, This is the parking spot. Ground not too bad overall but I imagine it could be very wet after rain.MikeM08/06/2016
Followed fence lines from road.rhalstead25/03/2016
On way back from Pike Rigg, followed a fence line mostly, then short heathery plod. A tad damp underfoot.Aye Jimmy23/12/2015
With G. Alston > Randalholme > Ayle via Isaac's Tea Trail > Kip Law on good track which leaves road west of Ayle > Ayle Common then descent Eastwards over moor to Moscow then follow old road then B6294 and descending to Gossipgate & back to Alston.RT197031/08/2015

If bagging along with Pike Rigg it is best to park to the north west of the trees (now felled)alongside the A686. After passing through the access gate, follow a vague path along the eastern side of the fenceline to the first west running fence. Follow this to the south side, crossing to the north at the opportune gateway. You can cross back at final fence. 6.59 miles (for both), 359 ft ascent, 3 hours.moorsman20/09/2014
From the rough layby on the A686 at the county boundary. Then following the fence line until turning off to visit Ayle Common. Thereafter back to the fence line and on to Whitfield Law, Pike Rigg and Whitfield Lough. Fortunately after a dry spell, otherwise it would be very wet going across Willyshaw Moss!Fisky Boy09/09/2014

From Rough lay-by on A686 at NY 74111 51050 (471m). Ascended Ayle Common from fence junction at NY 73432 51765 then returned to this junction for ascent of Pike Rigg. (6.4 miles 130m ascent)David Gradwell26/07/2013
From Pike Rigg. No paths apart from a few bits and pieces. Wet and fairly hard going.destaylor05/05/2013
On the way back from walk to Pike Rigg. Unmarked top - Grid Ref quoted looks about right though - GPS tallied with the OS spot heightCrib Goch09/12/2012
Deep powdery snow made walking difficult. Top is fairly flat so had to use gps to find the exact location.Jhimmy18/12/2011
frmo main road before going on to ayle commongigglejon01/05/2010
A good rough bagging (OMM training)run with Darren, Circuit from Alston YH. Up alongside R. Nent to Blagill and old mine track up to Hard Crag - rough going NW to cross road, then long reedy moorland stretch with heather to Pike Rigg - S to Ayle Common & SE down to road and back into Alston. Came across mini grough blockers - attempting to silt up peat groughs to reduce erosion.Chris Pearson01/08/2006
