Up from Buxton following path alongside wall up to trig and then on to HP. | PeterD | 02/12/2023 |
Despite my dislike of narrow country lanes, started from Castle Naze on the extremely narrow Dove Holes to Combs road.Circular walk round the edge of the moor taking in Black Edge and Combs Head.Cool wind and low cloud for first half of walk.No sun at all. | catman | 31/05/2023 |
With Nell from SK055740 through Corbar Woods to Corbar Hill. Onto open access land at SK048750 then via the eastern edge to Black Edge. Back to the wall and across the moor to the shooter hut at SK051768 and round the north and western edge to Combs Head top. Back via Corbar hill. | Glenelg | 04/05/2023 |

With E. From Buxton. Through Corbar Woods, onto Corbar Hill then Combs Head and Black Edge. | Beeliner | 23/08/2022 |
From Buxton, through Corbar Woods, over Corbar Hill, Black Edge, Combs Head and Corbar Hill again. Moody skies and showers but quite a warm late summer day. | Lazylizzie | 30/07/2022 |
I came back to Buxton to revisit this hill because someone has gone and resurveyed it and moved the highest point 150m north of the trig for a mere 30cm difference! I had a lovely walk but to me, the trig is still the summit. Why would anyone want to resurvey a flat summit? Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 23/05/2022 |
Corbar Hill, Black Edge, Combs Head. Circular Ethel/trig bagging with R+R. | Dan Baddeley | 10/04/2022 |
From Midshires Way with Combs Head. 2.5 hours | Longwojo | 11/02/2022 |
Sunny, warm but very windy day. From Buxton over Corbar Hill, Black Edge, Combs Head and Corbar Hill again. Followed up with walk up to Grin Low. | mavero10 | 31/12/2021 |
From old road. Coombs Head and Black Edge. Direct across moor to ruined shelter, then to trig and third possible top. Back by wall and more direct to start point. With B, B and R. | jenx | 19/11/2021 |
Parked on old Roman road to SW of Coombe Head. With Jenx and dugs up grassy slopes and over wall to gain summit. Thence direct across the moors on reasonable going plus vehicle and animal tracks to wall by old building, possible high point of Black Edge. Out to trig and spot beyond to make sure of summit. Back down trail leading SW of top and round to near start point. Wall hop then direct down to car. | nordicstar | 19/11/2021 |
Walked from A5004 taking in Combs Head | climbingkershaw | 07/07/2021 |
Parked on Roman Rd (SK 0411 7523) as far up as was reasonably navigable, prob could have driven further but road gets very bad after. Took the 'road' for ~320m before hopping the fence, and then a wall a bit higher up, for Combs Head, then 2.5km of rough trackless moorland to here. | jonglew | 22/06/2021 |
Ascended while climbing with friends at Castle Naze. Followed W edge and then direct (tough going. From summit trig followed ridge N along the small track to the Fort. Saw a short-eared owl. | JK | 06/06/2021 |
4/4 Dewey day. Parked in the lay by on the A5004 at SK 042 747. Walked up the Midshires Way to the Access Land, then aimed for gate in wall at approx SK 039 758, there picked up the clear path which follows the wall all the way to Black Edge Trig, deviating off it to bag the summit of Combs Head en route. Returned back along the wall to gate at top corner of field at SK 048 750, where headed S by wall to Trig at Corbar Hill and down RoW through Corbar Woods to A5004, which was followed uphill back to the car. 12km with 330m ascent in 2h50m. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 15/04/2021 |
Visited all 3 summit options | RobertP | 04/04/2021 |
Parked to W on A5004. Combs Head and Black Edge (all three suggested summits). Outward to Black Edge via path alongside wall on east edge of plateau; return through the middle on ATV tracks - shorter, but slightly harder going. | PGCE | 25/12/2020 |
With H. | Chris Ellis | 07/10/2020 |
Parked at the official end of the minor road from the A5004 which is also the Midshire's way, it is possible to drive further along this track but you will need a 4x4. Walked up Mid shire's way to access land on my right leading up to North West off Combes head, summit is just of path in heather then continued to follow path for well over an hour to reach the trig on Black Edge. Navigation is simple as the path sticks to the wall all the way only cutting into the moor when a stream is crossed. Seven and half miles in two hours forty minutes. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 22/02/2020 |
Clear sunny day with great views. | davechaffey | 13/11/2019 |
Combs Head > Black Edge from GR: SK 04216 74769 | Hippster | 21/09/2019 |
Combs Head > Black Edge from GR: SK 04216 74769 | ronaldo333 | 21/09/2019 |
From Errwood Reservoir and circuit of Combs Moor.
N | Nick Caunt | 29/08/2019 |
Walked westward from Dove Holes station to gate on minor road opposite footpath from Bank Hall Farm. Up to the fort and then followed the path which clings to the edge (too close at times on a very windy day like today!). Great views east and north from the Edge. | JOHNS | 11/08/2019 |
From Castle Naze with EA | victimofmathema | 23/07/2018 |
8 mile circular of Combs Moss from Buxton following the path around the edges re-bagging Black Edge (previously bagged in 2011)and Combs Head (previously bagged in 2016), fairly warm with high cloud cover all day nice views. Afterwards drove to and bagged Chelmorton Low and Sough Top trig. | DanTrig | 08/04/2018 |
A walk across Combs Moss from Combs Head. Solo. Walked back to Buxton through Light Wood. | Dangerous Dave | 08/02/2018 |
Parked on A5004 WNW of Combs Head. Found a path up to the ridge and then right to summit of Combs Head. Decided to go across Combs Moss to Black Edge rather than driving round and doing a shorter walk from the other side. This was mostly pathless and, although the going was not too bad, it did go on a bit. Iy was a lovely cold, sunny November day though. | clivevilla | 08/11/2017 |
Circuit of Combs Moss plateau, from Gout Lane car park. Four legged baggers are unfortunately not allowed on the plateau due to ground nesting birds. | BobHancock | 05/11/2017 |
Parked: SK 061785 pull-in. Entered field at gate SK 05877 78600 and headed South to Short Edge then followed path to summit. | David Evans | 05/11/2017 |
Nice view point east to a bright green valley below. We approached from Combs Head to the west across the boggy moorland before continuing north along a path. Trig is a little south of the Highpoint | Denise | 04/11/2017 |
KJF. Visited on a clear day doing a half circuit of Combs Moss. Good views E. Start point Lightwood Road in Buxton where paths through the bracken from the waterworks give easy access to the hilltop. If you follow the wall across Combs Head be careful of the drainage ditch next to the trodden path which is overgrown and invisible in places and could lead to sludge covered feet or a wrenched ankle. | crazy | 02/09/2017 |
Direct from Combs Head. Not recommended. Hard going through heather and ankle breaking stuff. From the summit I followed the path against the fence to Flint Clough and onwards above Moss House and Combs Head and back to 036759 and the Roman Road. Much easier. Solo. | bolton | 04/08/2017 |
A brilliant hill and a fantastic quiet moorland plateau with superb walks around the edge. Superb rock climbing at Castle Naze (try Scoop Face) and an amazing hill fort that is well worth checking out. | John Eley | 26/03/2017 |
With Jo, linear walk from Dove Holes along Cowlow Lane, then faint path up to Castle Naze Fort and then along Short Edge to Black Edge, then onto Combs Head, before descending to the Roman Road and going along the A5004 to Buxton. Weather; generally cloudy with sunny intervals, humid, moderate visibility due to the misty conditions. | amblerbob | 15/09/2016 |
With Les and dog Lion from the nw along northern edge path curls round the escarpment edge and then south to trig pillar S2775 | vegibagger | 27/04/2016 |
With Combs Head in early morning mist | wychwood | 15/03/2016 |
After yesterdays torrential downpour we are climbing the walls. Misty with penertrating drizzle , thats good enough for us - OUR ROUTE - Coombs - Naze Castle - Short Edge - Black Edge (& Trig 507) - Coombs Head Farm - Ridge Lane - Coombs - Great to see sheep again. | briandavies | 13/12/2015 |
BMC walk | dentalchimp | 28/11/2015 |
7/8 Seventh of long day again old Man of Moy/The Cloud/Croker Hill/Gun/Burbage Hill/Combs Head/Black Edge/Bole Hill | Fergalh | 20/09/2015 |
Parked in layby at 025760 then followed footpath up past White Hall centre to Combs Head. Over the wall, up a steep grassy slope with another wall at the top. Don't bother doing it this way - on the way back I discovered there was an easy path up just round the corner (not on the map!) Following this path takes you around the edge of Combs Moss up to Black Edge. Again, I wish I'd known about it on the way there - the moss isn't great for walking across! | the_adam | 21/07/2015 |
Parked on grass verge by farm gate near entrance to White Hall Centre at 033764 (Room for 1 car) Up rough road to stile at SK03678 75852 Up 4x4 track to gate & then SSE along good path to Combs Head Continued SE & then NE along path to the trig point. (S) | gerrybowes | 28/06/2015 |
On a walk between Chapel-en-le-Firth and Buxton stations. Wet & windy. | alistairpooler | 31/05/2015 |
On 2015 2 day backpack. Also earlier with Janet | steveb2006 | 18/04/2015 |
Great walk up from Buxton via Corbar Cross. | griefmiester | 13/04/2015 |
From Cowlow. Only 2 walls to get over! | arranc | 08/04/2015 |
From Dove Holes up road then over Lady Low and Hob Tor. Very windy but better than forecast. | SS | 01/01/2015 |
Start ~ 043747. Parked on verge, took road/track to north then path up to gate at the col. From summit headed north east across pathless moor to Black edge. Cloudy, damp day. With Wombourne, Ron & Pat. | steve hudson | 20/11/2014 |
Parked at GR043 747, junction of A5002 and Roman road. Walked along Roman road for about 1 mile where a gate in the wall leads to a track up to the col then to summit of Combs Head. We then walked NE across boggy heathland, heather and tussock grass to the trig point on Black Edge. Descended SSW on path following the wall all the way down through an adventure course and onto the main road by an Outdoor Pursuits Centre. A dry day but dull and a chilly wind. With SH, RO and PR. | wombourne | 20/11/2014 |
Ascent from Errwood Reservoir via Bunsal Cob car park, Midshires Way and Coombs Head. Followed wall from Coombs Head to small windturbine from where wall turns to run straight to summit. Followed faint path by wall. This path switches away from the wall just once - to descend into and ascend out of one steep gulley which bars a direct ascent to summit. | pwhitaker_1966 | 14/06/2014 |
My second summit of Four today on a walk in mainly misty conditions from Chinley, From Eccles pike, i took the minor road south of the summit, turned left and took a footpath at Lidgate to Bradshaw hall farm from where a track descends all the way to the B5470 and then continues as Combs road. Immediately after passing the railway i took the footpath immediately left over a paddock onto the lower slopes heading towards Bank Hall Farm. The track continues to reach a minor road where there is an open access sign and gate. I climbed up to the fort having had a brief look at Combs edge (impressive from the lower path)and headed along short edge. I followed the edge around and then a well trodden path (that cuts the corner off). Eventually you come to Hob tor where the Gritstone formation does look like some sort of face!

ITs a very gradual ascent to the trig point. Conditions were very misty but it often cleared revealing a lovely landscape. | Dazingdale | 18/11/2013 |
If you climb from the minor road west from Dove Holes beware of two walls that need negotiating. Possible but scary. | moorsman | 29/01/2013 |
From minor road to N and Castle Naze. Sunny but very windy. | Aye Jimmy | 25/05/2012 |
From Errwood Reservoir. | adrianturner | 31/03/2012 |
Solo | 1921 | 15/03/2012 |
Parked on Old Road at SK 03277 76428. Walked up road to stile at SK 03672 75852. Short climb to gate then very enjoyable walk all round edge to collect both Deweys | David Gradwell | 11/02/2012 |
Great little walk along the moorland of Black Edge from Buxton, Drove to and bagged The Cloud and Mow Cop on way back home. | DanTrig | 23/07/2011 |
Parked near Bank Hall then ascended to the 443m spot and then followed the edge path all the way round. Really nice walk on a beautiful morning. | The Team | 10/07/2011 |
I parked at the bottom of Corbar Woods in Buxton and took in the Corbar tig point first and then up onto the ridge and along to this peak. Good views out into the valley. | Father Ted | 12/02/2011 |
Parked to north near Cowlow 399m. Cool sunny afternoon with snow underfoot. | Dugswell2 | 28/11/2010 |

Hill bagging with Ian and the hounds.Nicest hill visited tonight. | simocity | 06/04/2010 |
Went all the way around Combs Moss etc. Recommended for the views and waterfalls off this compact moor. It stands alone and must be unique for allowing a circular edge walk in the Peak. Very wet though. | simon and co | 26/03/2010 |
from buxton via trig point on corbar hill.dull day but enjoyable. | steven ruffles | 06/11/2009 |
Joined the edge path at Castle Naze where there is a stile giving access to the climber's crag. Good path from there all the way round. Did this as a circuit taking in Combs Edge. | BobKelly | 31/10/2009 |
Trig pillar and ruin visited.
And again on:-
04-11-2017 Something of a trudge over Combe Moss from Combe Head, descent via pleasant path along Black Edge. I thought the un-marked heather/grass beside wall ~150m N of the trig pillar was marginally higher. | RichardM | 02/08/2009 |
On a great hill-bagging day, walked over to Buxton from Castleton, bagged this lovely mini mountain, then headed over to Cheshire for some Marilyn action... | DanHolme | 17/05/2007 |
On walk around edge of Combs Moss in snow. | Wheelsy | 21/01/2007 |
Parked at the Errwood Reservoir and walked up to the access point on the Midshires way about 1/2 a mile past White Hall Centre. Well established path around the edge, good views over Buxton. | rhalstead | 26/12/2006 |
Trig revisit: heather moorland, gritstone edge, lovely view | RHW | 26/03/2006 |
Done this a few times on a circuit of the edges of Combs Moss, starting from either Longhall Farm or Chapel-en-le-Frith station. A great moorland plateau with beautiful walking. | Jake994 | 26/03/2005 |
Hiring mountain bikes in Buxton for a Trail Quest event next day. Then eventually at 3pm set off with Rob & Lesly for run up Black Edge (a wanted 500m top) and down to Goyt valley and back through Buxton golf course. | Chris Pearson | 27/06/1998 |
Peak District Dewey bagging, walk 3/7; Black Edge from road to N: 064785, track crosses pasture from gate then climb to edge, low wall. No RoW (path along Edge), heather, trig, fine view | RHW | 20/12/1997 |
A very bad day. The roads were blocked by ice and snow. I came from Castle Naze; to start with along the edge and then across the moor. I struggled in fresh soft snow over heather with a crust. It was knee deep turning waist deep at times. I ended up crawling. It took over 3 hours to do the round trip from Castle Naze. I'd just read White Spider and I thought I might end up in a death bivouac. | Alan Moore | 24/11/1996 |
