W to Catchpenny then NE on path towards Butterstone. Back on path along edge of Loch of Butterstone and Lowes. 27km 500m climb. Fab explore of area.Lynnebe21/02/2024
From Loch of the Lownes carpark to mast, up the cycletrack to the wee Shed then through the woods to high point. Took ages to find the cairn. Drizzle and low cloud/ mist. Soaked.alexmaclennan13/02/2024
From accommodation in Dungarthill estate, up various tracks through deep bracken before clambering over deer fence to find the highest pointMatt290108/08/2023
From Loch of Lowes, path and forest tracks to near mast. Crossed wall, slatted fence/ladder and stile. Then faint path through bracken, heather and trees. Return by 49pp's route - much easier, even with fence crossing and now felled woodland.clashcityrocker09/07/2023
RSPB car park, track to 0449,4177, zig zag extraction track through gorse to fenceline, then open woodland to summit.PeteF14/04/2023
Parked at Loch of Lowes, nice trail along the road. Easy path until you are near the mast. It takes you to the corner where there are 2 stiles. I actually went through the fence. Big enough gap. Stay close to deer fence on you right. There is a faint trail through ferns and heather. Better to do this hill in winter.tallblond19/03/2023
From Loch of the Lowes via signposted track and then forest track round to the mast. Before reaching the mast, went left up the hill on the zig zag track and then along edge of trees. Crossed broken wall, wooden slats, and stile at the fence junction. From here a feint trodden path through dead bracken goes most of the way to the summit. Headed over to East Cult trig point afterwards via West Cults and Dunmore.Fife Walking28/01/2023

From Loch of Lowes car park (free). A very simple walk up past the small mast on good paths. The path ends at a large gap between the stone wall and the deer fence. A pleasant walk across frozen boggy ground to the summit. Much easier than expected. No deer fences to climb. Solo.Dangerous Dave20/01/2023

Steep ascent up zig zag forest track from west. Spotted a mountain bike track and followed this steeply to the top track. Were the start hut is. Over the fence and passed the 314 spot height to small cairn atop rock some 200m further North. Descende down the zogzags as mountain track very steep. Donot leave the track as the area is largly unpenatrable gorse and scrubcjo01/10/2022
Glad to have had such detailed information. Bracken now waist high.VerySlowPlodder27/06/2022
Parked in small lay-by by end of golf club out track ~035434. Followed road/track through the golf course until it meets Loch of the Lowes track at edge of forest, turn right go through a gate, taking a left turn and follow all the way up past the mast (ignore all temptations of things looking like they might go somewhere off to the left). Once past the mast continue until there is a T junction where the path meets a wall. Turn left up the new track by the wall up past a wooden hut and a smaller mast. Continue until you get to where there is a wall going off leading towards the summit. until you see a wall. On your right there is a broken stone wall, patched up metal fence. Climb over the wooden slats, then over the stile, then there is a bit of a path follows quite close to the wall over the 1st nobble and then up to the summit. Was quite brackeny in June, can imagine it won't be quite so easy in July and August. Its only 440m from the stile to the summit, so this might not be the mJulieB15/06/2022

Dunkeld-Brae Road-LotL path-metal gate-thin track before mast-over wall by hut-down to perpendicular wall-over deer fence-follow wall either side to 314 spot height-cut off to true summit. Removed branches from fallen Larch at summit. All-out blue sky - shame MWIS lied to me. Nuthatch and daytime bats seen. Blisters from new Meindls still appearing.iangpark27/02/2022
Easy going up rather slushy track after fresh snow, then trudge up through heather. Found slightly easier route back to track through bracken. Would be tough in the summer I would think. Above much of the fog at the summit.nicolajane08/01/2022
From Loch of Lowe's CP walked to just main mast and took MTB trail steeply upwards to small mast and bike hut. From there climbed over wall and then new deer fence on wooden slats and immediately over stone wall on wooden ladder style. Then made mistake of following wall and fence to top as this led literally to blood, sweat and tears. The sweat from the extreme heat, the tears from the sweat running into my eyes mixed with suncream, the blood from having to fight thought head high bracken and thick gorse. Fought my way eventually over the first top 314 spot height and onto higher ground. Found a more pleasant descent by following the tree line in a westerly direction before arching back to the styles.garyhoney27/08/2021
Started from Loch of Lowes car park, which is closed on Tuesdays , March to October. However there is space for 3 cars on small lay-by (and without intruding on the road at all). Followed path (which was parallel to the golf club for a while) , taking a left turn still on track, up left past the mast, until the mast is on your right, and you see on your left a broken stone wall, patched up metal fence. Climb over the wooden slats, then over the stile, followed the path up next to the fencing, which takes you virtually to the summit.mazz01/06/2021
From Dunkeld to mast then followed my nose to the top. Lots of deer about. 1hr 45 8kmNicky C26/02/2021
early hill run experience just before storm Dennis truely arrivedTamCollie16/02/2020
From Loch of the Lowes car park, began up Dunkeld path but carried straight up from first gate, paths at first, two deer fences, several knolls and deep heather to summit, descended W to mast, then back to Loch of Lowes along tracks. A truly horrible hill.kdbennett01/02/2020
Possible to follow new zig-zag track to 047416. Despite tempting wooden step-ladder over deer fence, terrain is much easier if you keep to RHS of fence and head NE through mature woodland. Then cross deer fence just below summit at 05041849pp25/10/2019
This is a fiendish little hill, in a curiously pleasing way. Getting to the top is like solving an awkward crossword or a chess problem. From Loch of the Lowes, l followed the Dunkeld path, forked left, and found an old step through wall crossing. A clear path led on up the hill. Then the path vanished in the bracken, so I plodded through deep bracken and heather, and over six candidate summit knolls - two of them cairned -, before finding the real summit cairn under a fallen tree! Descending towards the Dunkeld track involved steep descents through trees and a patch of felling before reaching the zigzag track near the mast and returning easily.Nick Down105/07/2019
Good parking 150m W of track start to Haughend at NO035425. Up vehicular tracks NE then SE to first, smaller, comms mast 'hidden' in trees at NO044419, then L up grassy, wet, zig zags, initially gorse-y until met deer fence, then on continuation path to top of fence and gap between two walls meeting as a V, NO045420. From gap, 400m SE, first 200m on faint signs of previous passage. 3rd 100m over a fore-top on heather worse than purgatorial. Last 100m of heather was only irksome. Clearly not a frequently visited hill.Isbjorn04/06/2019
Same as Bolton. Wonderful wx.CJM15/02/2019
From Loch of Lowes carpark, straight up. V diff terrain. Sunny, still day. Ran/walked up, ran down by road to W. Hurrying to Edinb. Rounsfell01/01/2019

From Loch of Lowes Scottish Wildlife Trust visitors centre which is for VC visitors only. Along footpath to Dunkeld across road up beside wall after about 150m on N side which lead to a deer fence with no gate. Heather bashing in snow to summit. On your compulsory visitor centre visit on return look out for Osprey that nest on the Loch.rogreeves03/04/2018
From NO 0372 4259. Good tracks to NO 0449 4196 then over rough wet heathery ground to a surprisingly pleasant top. With Carole Engel en-route north.jonglew31/03/2018
Late afternoon before dark from Loch of Lowes car park. As others up the path/track towards the mast. Felling means the tack continues to the T junction wall (and style over deer fence) short heathery struggle over the minor bump to the Cairn on the rocky point. Better than imagined, even a stone memorial seat overlooking the Tay to pause on the way down.N.Morters12/01/2018
An attempt to drive up the steep road out of Dunkeld towards Haughend ended in failure because of ice, so reverted to Loch of the Lowes car park. Nice path around the Loch, to join the good path signposted to Dunkeld, then up the voie normale logging road to the small mast as per Nordicstar. Up the track, then along the wall and out onto the moor. All bogs frozen, and the bracken dead and gone, and snow made the climb more pleasant. Glad to have microspikes for the descent on the logging road and path, given the sheet ice underlying the snow.Gill14/12/2017

Good parking along the road at 033425 just before the turning to Haughend. I ascended about 100m before the main mast where a path leads to a gate in the deer fence then 'roughed' to the summit. Descended to the smaller mast near the gate at the edge of the forest. Not much between both routes. Solo. 85 minutes.bolton18/09/2017

Continued along a track from Dunked Golf Course until reaching the radio/phone mast. Turned left along a rough track until reaching a wooden fence, then waded waist deep through bracken and heather to the cairned summit. Great walk, ace views.summitter14/07/2017
With Mora, from Loch of Lowes.BLACKHILL01/07/2017
Parked at Loch of Lowes Visitor Centre. Followed loch-side path to east before crossing road and taking 'Dunkeld' path. After 150m before a gate turned left and ascended easy slopes along an obvious path with wall on right. Kept near to wall and crossed at gate near corner in wall. Continued ascending through woodland before crossing deer fence onto open moorland to reach summit. A slightly longer but easier route would be to continue through the gate on the Dunkeld path until reaching a track on a hairpin bend. At this point turn sharp left and follow a wall/fence until you can see open moorland at which point you cross the wall through a gate and continue to the summit (I returned this way). The heather around the summit area is deep!raffemeister23/03/2017
Track to small mast, follow path past mast and up side of forest fence, across damp but tussockless ground, short final climb through heather. Calm, mild, sunny and good views.iangalbraith19/02/2017
Followed track to tall mast then uphill to shed. Over wall & fence & uphill thro trees....eventually route to summit blocked by high fence...went back to shed, followed a track NW to ladder stile near fence junction...then thro heather to summit cairn. On return followed track NW from stile zigzag back to main track.PaulineD14/01/2017

Started at Loch of Lowes Visitor Centre Car Park and followed Pete R's route. Ended in Dunkeld. (Route is shown at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2016/08/newtyle-hill-no050419-317m.html)Gayle30/08/2016
Followed the route suggested by nordicstar. That was a good route which got us out onto the open hillside. It was then very hard work slogging through chest high reeds and thick heather to get to the summit. Lovely views en route and at the summit though. With Keith, Dad and baby Ross.islamidget17/08/2016

We parked in the big car park at Loch of Lowes. Then there's a path east through the woods alongside the road. After that, the 1:25000 map works well. There's a path up to NO 04490 41950. Then it would be easy to cross the fence but it's better to ascend beside Dean's Burn, keeping left of the fence until it reaches a broken wall and open heather. No need to climb the big deer fences anywhere.Pete R16/01/2016
With Jenx from minor road nr Dunkeld. Parking for one car GR036425 before Haughend. Take track uphill to metal gate then onwards to 200m before main mast. The bad conifers have been felled making it probably even worse as a route, instead look for a smaller mast before a burn, GR044419. Follow the minor track up through native trees to emerge on the fellside, with @200m across wet ground to reach summit top with fine views.nordicstar22/01/2015

With Anne. From Loch of Lowes Visitor Centre where we had seen an osprey on her nest. On path going south from loch which goes round a loop. Went direct to the summit from this path but it is not a good route. High deer fence to climb and much high heather. Small cairn on summit. OS 1:25,000 map has height of 314m on another top slightly further SW. This has a wall going over summit whereas the summit of highest top (317m) is a little way from the wall. Found a much better route for descent - NW and a track that goes through a gap in the wall that surrounds the forest at a right angle bend in the wall. Joins track to mast.pwbellarby12/05/2013
Parked at NO 03599 42518 and followed the track to the radio mast, then through the newly felled woodland and rough heather to the top.martin_hall08/04/2013
From Loch of Lowes to N. Started up track then direct to summit - a mistake: deep heather, wet vegetation and bog. Cairn perched on rock, no views today. Returned via track to W near mast, much easier.Aye Jimmy14/11/2011

After a few days climbing (which had included my first unexpected leader fall at Creag Dubh when my foot slipped - skimmed the ground on rope stretch but OK). Today safer Osprey nest watching (staring at twigs) at the visitor centre then climbed up this rough hill.
