From Glenhead via Barny and north ridge. | Winterfloodian | 13/01/2024 |
From the end of the track at NO239619 went uphill north on extractor route. Left this after a few metres and up through old clear fell and soon to open hill. | StueyB | 26/11/2023 |
From junction of Glenmarkie Lodge road and forestry track W of Hare Cairn, following Carole Engel's extraction track towards the summit. | Nick Down1 | 12/02/2023 |
From Freuchies Forest car park. Walked north up the glen towards Glen Markie Lodge until track on right doubles back up hillside heading south. Continued along track to turntable and then NE up open hillside between new and old plantation to top. Took more direct line back down towards main track through new plantation via a clear track that weaves down through the plantation. | Jossker | 08/10/2022 |
From CP close ish ( 1 km aya from ) road end. Tarmac, through farm area, onto track, past ruined building….wee bridge across stream. Diagonal towards the forest….feint ATV runss parallel to forest edge. Find it lose it. One fence then peathag gummocks. Another fence. Cairn in sight. Return same way | VerySlowPlodder | 30/08/2022 |
Parked at the bridge over the Newton Burn on the Glenmarkie road, though there is a decent size parking area at the track junction a few metres up the hill. Followed Carol Engels rout up going along this track, then taking the old track up the hill. We made a round trip of it on the descent by following the ridge North just inside the forest boundary, bits of path most of the way, until it meets a big track at 245642, this then leads down to the main track back to the car. 4 miles 1hr 35 walking time. | JulieB | 05/11/2021 |
Parked near end of forest track at NO239633, then followed track uphill to SW of summit, followed forest edge up to moor, then summit. Varied return route as per summitter. | willyross | 03/08/2021 |
Access road NO 2248 6020 (to SW), parking at NO 2380 6328 (but could have parked NO 237624). Thankfully old track NO 23705 62484 leads almost to top. | carole engel | 13/05/2021 |
A great day out on Crock and Hare Cairn using my bike to access nice paths up both hills. Crock: track on W side past Loch Shandra to 225656 where you'll see self sown spruce with a path through, marked by orange tape. Behind the baby trees, you find a wonderful path along the ridge, through larch running alongside the wall over Craigie Law, then a heathery track through new planting then a wide track through old spruce towards Crock. Open heather towards summit and improving path along W side of ridge. So easy! Back to bike, track down E side, then junction towards Glenmarkie over bridge, nice rideable track starting 241638 to ridge line by gate. Left the bike, followed easy grassy track on W side of wall then faint path through heather to Hare Cairn. Back to Freuchies, fun downhills. | Gill | 19/04/2021 |
Trig bagging hike along the reservoir shore then back along the tops with a few deer fence obstacles thrown in | LizzieG | 18/04/2021 |
From Freuchies, along the Glenmarkie road until reaching a bridge over the Newton Burn. Passed a tinsel and bauble laden Crimbo tree (probably gone by the time you get there) before taking a sharp right turn along a forestry track climbing steadily up and along the western slope of Hare Cairn. Once due west of the summit a more overgrown track heads straight to the top through new re-planting. It runs out onto open heather, from where it is but a short pull to the cairn and nearby high point. We retraced our steps to the road junction ESE of Crock, and found a relatively easy series of open lines between the new planting, before hitting the dreaded fallen trees and brash higher up. Perseverance and short stature got us through to the heather summit. We returned by following a narrow animal path due south, entering a tunnel-like straight line through the mature forest to a forestry track heading west. Eshewing this option, we carried on southwards along a wall, before reaching an extrac | summitter | 20/12/2020 |
From Backwater reservoir. | Waterlog | 22/01/2020 |
Track & firebreak from the dead tree on W side. | Gonk | 03/09/2019 |
Parked at FC car park ('Glen Isla') at Freuchies, NO224608 - the road is initially rough, but stick with it, it seems to be public parking. On forest roads to NO240638, then up path to ridge at NO245641. Along ridge on E side of fence to avoid initial windblow, but this meant posting myself through a small hole in the fence at the top, then faint bits of path to the summit - returned to the fence but kept between fence and trees - trees initially seem impenetrable, but about half way down the steeper section there is an 'open notch' which gives access to two rides - the one going 300 deg mag took me straight down to the track junction about 120m N of the bridge at NO240634. | Isbjorn | 03/06/2019 |
Parked at Freuchies CP. walked along forest road in warm weather, right at first junction then sharp right at next junction. Climbed up at edge of felled area which was a mistake as it was rough and then steeply through forest to open ground to summit. Great views. returned directly west and found good path which lead back to forest road opposite a single dead tree. | Coinneach | 31/03/2019 |
With Bob and Brian on forest tracks. Calm and murky. Good views | Play2End | 06/01/2019 |
Recent felling opened up hillside and tracks on the west flank from the Glenmarkie Lodge track. | N.Morters | 15/09/2018 |
1 of 5: From B951 Freuchies CP. | ChrisR | 26/04/2018 |
From the Backwater Reservoir and up the hill along the north edge of the forest, then southwards to the summit. Low cloud rolling in briefly but clearing within half an hour. | Windy Corner | 27/07/2017 |
With Mora, from forest track at no239633 | BLACKHILL | 20/07/2017 |
Solo from high up on west side track at about 410m. No trees to negotiate at all. Felled hillside. | vegibagger | 02/07/2017 |
Parked in last lay-by at Backwater Reservoir. Walked on track to derelict cottage then espied gate across from it, walked straight up to Trig and to high point slightly away from trig. Noted that Crock had a clearing on its east side decided to add Crock to list. Stayed for a butty and enjoyed views and hot weather. Company: Solo | iandesbottes | 24/05/2017 |
Parked in Forestry Commission car park at NO224608. Followed tracks to approx. NO239628. Followed wall initially through trees then through felled forest. Near edge of felled area broke away from wall and made directly for the summit. Returned to NO232630 in order to climb Crock. | raffemeister | 08/03/2017 |
From Dam car park. There is a further car park at 250607, wish I'd known. Partly sunny, drizzle later, hot, calm, good views. | iangalbraith | 01/08/2016 |
Weather fair. | MountainMac | 27/04/2016 |
Easy climb, surprising through cleared area. All misty and wet. | jenx | 25/01/2016 |
Having driven to the track junction below Glenmarkie Lodge we found it possible to drive to GR239628 where there's parking. The new track goes even further (shown on 1:25 but not 1:50) but not necessary, can access the old wall line up from GR238628. This can be followed easily until entering an area of tree clearance, however easy to pass uphill through the cleared trees and new plantings to gain open ground and the summit. 40 mins up and down. | nordicstar | 25/01/2016 |
From the Backwater Dam. Along it's west side then continue through trees on a path until you reach the open hill. Turn left and climb alongside edge of trees . I had to squeeze under deer fence to reach the summit | AlisonFox66 | 10/04/2015 |
from Freuchies in snow, after Crock which was the wrong order to do it. As most of W side is now felled, the track at 239633 rapidly takes you on to open hillside. I just walked up the furrows. Pleasant hill | Thearlaichdubh | 20/12/2014 |
parked end of public road at glenhead farm, track to 2nd farm, crossed stream then followed fence line up to summit. | robertphillips | 01/11/2014 |
Solo run/fight over Crock and Hare Cairn from Freuchies. Round E side of Cairn Hill then good hidden forest track up S ridge of Crock. Down through tricky fallen trees on E side towards Hare Hill. Easy ascent up new forest track then felled trees to top. Direct descent back to Freuchies through sufficiently open forest and wade through Newton Burn. | amswanston | 31/10/2014 |
Parked in glen and walked up forest tracks from the W, no fallen trees to negotiate. | AndrewFinnimore | 26/09/2014 |

From dam at Blackwater reservoir. | russell61 | 15/04/2013 |
All the elements of a classic walk - dismal weather, forest roads, thrashing through brash and no views. Great. Did it after the aptly named Crock and walked all the way round the road to use the bridge rather than risk drowning in the rain swollen stream. | Martin R | 19/11/2012 |
Easy ascent of west face on new forestry track and up through well clear felled forestry. I could not find the footbridge over Newton Burn, detoured on tracks to the north. | Topographer57 | 27/10/2011 |
Rather a roundabout approach from Glenhead Farm. Showers and fine rainbows at summit. And large flies. | Aye Jimmy | 19/06/2011 |
Revisit. Dull summit, decent view. Had a hard time in the forest last time. This time much better: from Backwater car park, followed wall & fence W from NO249617 then good track N along ridge to summit. | RHW | 24/07/2010 |
Ascended from the reservoir carpark in rain. Went on to attempt Crock but defeated by windblown trees on the east side of the hill. | JohnW | 24/10/2005 |
From the Glenmarkie Lodge track on newly blasted track most of the way. | Eddie | 29/08/2003 |
From Glenhead farm. To open glen, over swamp and a 3' wide stream getting both feet wet. Uphill for 600' over deep lush heather to forest edge. Removed stones from under wire deer fence so that Arran could squeeze under. I climbed over at a corner. To top at 15.10. No cairn. | arranc | 21/07/2003 |
Date is first visit. Notes from later...dullish hill & view, good tk runs N-S across summit. park 251590, road to 249618, return via 242618 | RHW | 23/12/2001 |
