This is a hump; the official summit coordinates (ST 17684 90939) have become irrelevant. | Matt | 02/05/2023 |
From road head along rocky track, some flytipping. Across mine spoil to a flat summit. Area slowly being colonised by trees. Great views. | cjo | 29/06/2022 |
Cracking run from Bedwas … ran around top for a bit to make sure … not the prettiest top and now demoted | milejunkie | 08/02/2022 |
On a sunny, solo walk from the Sirhowy valley below Wyllie, after visiting the many Bronze Age cairns at Mynydd Bach and Twyn Cae-Hugh. From the largest cairn, the landscape rises in a brown wilderness of shattered earth, up the unnatural slopes of the tip. Worth heading up to the highest part of the artificial area for the views, but not terrain to savour. From here I headed SE to the fine cairns at Twyn yr Oerfel, then on to Pen-rhiw Tip and Mynydd Machen. | thesweetcheat | 30/01/2022 |
Definitely a bing with a smoothed bulldozed mine -spoil surface with ditches, possibly being prepared for tree planting. Dark and rainy but nice lights in valley. After Dimlaith via Rhymney valley Ridgeway walk. | Denise | 28/11/2021 |
An interesting world of rolled grey mud criss-crossed with drainage ditches. In darkness and dreek all a little surreal. From Mynydd Dimlaith, returning via the Mountain road then looping lane with good views of the lights of Caerphilly. | RichardM | 28/11/2021 |
Owner of Pen-y-Waun OK with parking at end of lane at ST 16828 89994 - Up slabby track to junction at 171907 & then E. on good track to wide gateway at 174906 - Through gateway & up over 2 tracks of colliery spoil to the higher & much wider roadway - SE along roadway to 177905 & then up to the high point of the spoil heap (375m) which is being colonised by a mixture of grass, heather, gorse & spruce. Natural high point (355m) located somewhere to E, lies beneath metres of spoil. (S) | gerrybowes | 07/10/2021 |
Start from football pitch in Trethomas, ascent over former Bedwas Colliery, tip and beyond to man-made summit of Mynydd Y Grug. Along Grug Common and descent via bridleway onto Mynydd Dimlaith, former railway line back to Trethomas. | forsterfamily7 | 29/08/2021 |
mfrom bedwas church, mountain road and tip raining quiet today | underhill | 18/06/2020 |
Bedwas to Risca. Very minimal vegetation amid the bare soil of the moulded summit cone. | Smudge | 14/12/2019 |
07.30 the hump which is a moonscape mess & aspiring Marilyn since there is maturing pune forest up to above 370metres and there are full contour lines on the 1:25k map on this former coal slag heap. | vegibagger | 22/07/2019 |
1/2 Parked just after cattle grid on road to west, pretty direct walk up through mud, fly tipping, and bikers. Not the most pleasant | penbet | 25/06/2019 |
Quiet midweek morning. Relatively easy to find the way to the top. Pleasant views, but perhaps won't live too long in the memory :) | kasharic | 20/07/2018 |
From Bedwas, up Church Street then Mountain Road, then across sheep field to the fenceline, onto the spoil tip, up via the track on the western face, and on to the highest point, at the eastern end. | Mariana Trench | 23/05/2018 |
TGIF because I guess at weekends the rubbish dumpers and the trailbikers are out in force. Drove to near masts to N, unmade road beyond too rough for my 2WD so ran from there. Enjoyed my 35 minson this hill, in the sunshine, but that was well enough. Fridge still there. | pwheeler | 20/04/2018 |
Up from Bedwas. Grim - weather & hill. | ngthack | 01/10/2017 |
Must've missed Nigel by just a few hours, though I was there at 3:30AM and it was probably even grimmer then. Quite an alien experience in the dark and mist actually. | Alex C | 01/10/2017 |
Parked just beyond cattle grid. Horrible area, full of fly-tipped rubbish. | liljonb | 22/01/2017 |
My last top for the county / UA . Walked up Mountain Road and then on to spoil heap to HP. Good views, but not pleasant | PeterD | 18/09/2016 |
from sirhowy park to east | dicky | 29/05/2016 |
Up mountain road from Bedwas. The summit was noisy with trail bikers. | Chris Peart | 14/02/2016 |
From car park for Sirhowy Country Park. Pleasant walk up on track through woods to the slag heap summit. | Cas-gwent | 12/02/2016 |
Walked up Mountain Road passed farm to Common and beyond. | Dugswell2 | 03/07/2015 |
Up Mountain Road from Bedwas. No parking possible at farm. Highest point fairly obvious but probably temporary | Colin Crawford | 03/07/2015 |
petey | 17/04/2015 | |
From Activity Centre on forest tracks. | rhalstead | 03/04/2015 |
Drive up from village of Machen below and park after cattle grill and head for slag heap at top is the top ! | Fergalh | 16/11/2014 |
A rough estimated date as to when I walked over the summit of Mynydd y Grug. | morgs4mountains | 01/03/2014 |
this hill is entirely made by bulldozers. does it count? park at last street uphill in Bedwas. walk up Mountain Road to the top and over rough stuff to the spoil heap. Highest point is 376m at 176906 | arranc | 06/10/2013 |
Went on Rhymney Ridge walk with school | dramaticjk123 | 09/07/2013 |
A despoiled and ugly hill due to it consisting of spoil from the coal industry. The hill has been parially landscaped, but a lot more work is need. It's also been (and is) ruined by 4x4 and scrambler bikes using the area as a playground. The trig point has long since disappeared (maybe buried under tons of spoil). | jonglew | 08/12/2012 |
Disappointing lack of glass or bathroom furnishings. As slag heaps go, not bad. | Martin R | 28/07/2011 |
Parked at 18609055 next to the usual heap of broken glass but the toilet seat has gone! Also as usual, two locals in car and van carried on along the rough track heading north to Pontllanfraith! Easy walk to top of spoil heap which is partially landscaped | chriswatson | 20/05/2011 |
Parked at 195906. Followed track to N of hill then up across the wasteland. Came back more directly. | chrisbien | 09/05/2011 |
Parked on the verge beside the road going up the hill from Bedwas - about 50 m before the track on the right. Track seems to be ancient right of way. | Malcvolm | 06/03/2010 |
Parked on the broken glass and broken toiler seat by the cattle grid. | clivevilla | 30/01/2010 |
the summit of this hill is possibly the uglyest in wales deviod of any plant life showing the signs of
open cast mining with a bit of fly tipping | hodder | 03/10/2008 |
Accessed by driving up from Machen to within 750m parking at cattle grid. Summit is a spoil heap with about 10 rocks marking highest point. Means Heather Mountain in English. | Father Ted | 10/09/2008 |
