Bit the bullet and paid the entrance fee, followed the Enchanted Way to the column built on the summit, then a fair bit of the rest of the route through impressive rock formations. | IanHHill | 21/02/2024 |
Visited Hawkstone Park and climbed to the top of the monument. | jessicahickman | 15/02/2024 |
On half term day trip with whole family. Half-price tickets! Followed the interesting Enchanted Trail up to the monument, then all except Carla climbed to the top, with great views all round. | RoguePulsar | 10/02/2024 |
1/3 on a walk, summit near large momument which you can go up and is very tall. With whole Family. | speedyclimber | 10/02/2024 |
4/8 (Cefn/Halkyn Mountain/Elysian Hill/Hawkstone Hill/Grotto Hill/Chirk Green Hill/Caergwrle Castle/Moel Y Park) | Fergalh | 17/09/2023 |
Worth a wander up the adjacent, counter clockwise Obelisk steps. A folly as defensive buildings had staircases built in a clockwise direction to disadvantage any enemies who might climb them. Since most soldiers wielded swords in their right hands, this meant that attacker swings would be inhibited by the inner wall, and they’d have to round each curve before striking—fully exposing themselves in the process. | summitter | 02/09/2023 |
From Grotto Hill via Swiss Bridge (zowee!). Climbed the monument, of course, and headed back via White Tower. The whole area is on a grander scale than I'd envisaged and packed full of surprises. Worth a whole day. | Wycombe Wanderer | 25/02/2023 |
Spent an enjoyable morning with my wife visiting the Follies, part of which involved visiting the high point of this hill. | NormanW | 28/05/2022 |
Pleasant walk on the tracks around the park and to the summit. Interesting place to wander around. A climb to the top of the monument gives great views all round. | LizH | 28/05/2022 |

Attempt. These days there seems to be more reasons to not go up a hill then ever before. First there was Covid now there is the £24 per car charge rather than the usual £8 per person.
Then having come to terms with shelling out the £24, then to be told cannot enter due to social distancing requirements, even though I only wanted to go up the hill.
So, either come back with a car full or when near English completion, inc Mow Cop which incidentally is not too far away. | mntainman | 15/04/2021 |
I thought the monument at the top was really cool.
It went up a lot. I was with my family. | speedyclimber | 06/08/2020 |
Spent an entire day at the Park, worth the entrance fee alone. Fantastic views from the top of the Monument | M6KIO | 30/10/2019 |
Car Park for Hawkstone Park Follies. Entrance fee today £11.50 instead of £8.25 because of 'Boot and Root' festival. | David Evans | 15/09/2019 |
Been saving this one for ages. Well more impressed with this park than I had imagined. | Alex C | 13/07/2019 |
Interesting parkland area. A good walk round with R and B. | jenx | 20/10/2018 |
Used facility CP and for ease paid to get in. Interesting area, monument and HP at base of massive Monkey Puzzle tree. Wandered further before leaving to visit other Hump tops | nordicstar | 20/10/2018 |
£7.50 Admission (Over 60) to Hawkstone Park. From Tea Room, up Elysian Hill & then followed designated route to the high point about 30m WSW of the monument. After climbing 150 steps to the top of the 100ft tower, continued to the Swiss Bridge & Grotto Hill before making way back to entrance. A pleasant couple of hours. (S) | gerrybowes | 05/10/2018 |
With then wife-to-be on long talk about sojourn to Hawkstone park follies. She was too scared to climb the tower. Great views from the top, I assisted some people by filling them in on all the hill groups we could see from up there. | tumpawumpa | 02/09/2018 |
Visit to Hawkstone Park with family. Ascended via marked path which then goes onwards to interesting caves. Great view from top of monument. First ascent circa 1990. | raffemeister | 25/08/2018 |
The 100 foot memorial tower with 150 steps on top of this ridge is a highlight of a interesting and unusual folly/ restored Victorian walking resort with tunnels, clefts and caves to entertain.Well signposted from Hawkstone Visitor centre (£8.25 fee) . The natural HP is at its base on a nearby path by a Monkey tree. The tower was built to commemorate Lord Hill becoming the first protestant Mayor of London in 1549 and has views- allegedly- over 12 Counties. Worth taking your time to explore the whole park- we took 5 hours. | Denise | 07/08/2017 |
Approached via the Rhododendron Jungle with stands of Coast Redwoods. Summit is a levellish grassy area with impressive 100ft tall monument (survey mark cut in SE corner) The spiral stairs and views from the top of the monument are worth the park entrance fee. After yesterdays rain the views are stunningly clear. Disappointingly the high point is not at the base of the monument but on a track 40m to the WSW. | RichardM | 07/08/2017 |
Out of hours (weekends 10am to 5pm - entrance fee) use golf course access road at SJ566288. No challenge from golfers. You need to walk right thru' the park into Hawkstone Hall grounds SJ574299 and re-enter the park SJ574298. 24-hour security patrol nowhere to be seen, thankfully | carole engel | 29/07/2017 |
With K, RM, S and LS. If we're going to pay to get in might as well make the most of it. Spent the afternoon exploring. Caves at Grotto Hill were most fun. | Ashley | 09/07/2017 |
Hawkstone Park now £8.25 for adult and £7.50 for pensioner. Unusual and very interesting place; certain sections of this park seemed quite hard work on the hottest day of the year so far and with summer vegetation. | Aye Jimmy | 26/05/2017 |
Trip to Hawkstone Follies. | PeteF | 07/05/2017 |
5th hill of today on a route from Wem to Prees station, climbing Desford hill, Lee Hills, Kenstone Hill and then on admittance to the park and after nourishment, Elysian hill. I took the route up via the White tower, the Rhododendron jungle (cool) then the woodland walk arriving at the monument. I walked all around the tower and the open space containing a great rhododendron climbing frame. The tallest Giant Redwood in Shropshire lives close by. | Dazingdale | 01/05/2017 |
Dog show with Minnie, so took the opportunity to do the top & the array of follies, very interesting, lovely sunny autumn day. | apricorum | 02/10/2016 |
Great place to visit for the follies and paths. | mart0797 | 24/05/2015 |
Pleasant park with this hill and 2 other tumps (neither of which are open to the public) within its boundary. First weekend open for the 2015 season - entrance fee now £7.95. Clear marked path to the top, near the monument, aka obelisk (with cut benchmark). | jonglew | 07/03/2015 |
Had an enjoyable yomp around park to get moneys worth but 2hrs is probably not long enough. | Chris Peart | 14/07/2014 |
Nice walk - lots of things to see! | mikependergast | 18/08/2013 |
its still £6.00 for a pensioner and 150 steps to the top of the tower! | arranc | 05/05/2013 |
Taken a wile to get to do this one, my last Shropshire top, the good news was that the tower was open so a quick climb up the stairs put another 100 feet on the top :-) | heavyhorses | 17/02/2013 |
It's in Hawkstone Park and whilst a non descript hill in itself the park itself is a delight. Definitely one to take an afternoon over. | simon and co | 20/10/2012 |
Walked from Clive to Weston. 2 hours for doing the round of the follies felt a bit rushed. Included a visit to remains of Moreton Corbet Castle en route. | Smudge | 20/10/2012 |
£7.00 or £6 for pensioners to take up to 3 hours to explore the park wih its follies, tunnels, Swiss Bridge, Grotto Hill and walk up the tower with 150 steps. The Monument standing over 100 ft high commemorating Sir Rowland Hill who was the first Protestant Mayor of London. | Dugswell2 | 08/08/2012 |
In a 'park.' Entrance fee £6 at shop/cafe. Convoluted path to top - pleasant place. | destaylor | 25/08/2011 |
Visitors'CP - through fields to golf course track - up track on HH land then along marked trail to summit. | chrisbien | 10/04/2011 |
First day of the year the park was open and reduced entrance fee of £1 for charity. Had a fun time seeing the follies, climbing the monument which must be the high point. Natural high point is a little south of monument I think. | Father Ted | 29/03/2009 |
Park was closed so had to climb over fence. Nice walk up, no definite top but it must be near the base of the obelisk somehwere. | clivevilla | 18/01/2009 |
With Gwen and John and Roni on weekend at Shrewsbury. | bolton | 06/05/2007 |

On family outing | JohnIvor | 26/08/2000 |
The date above is an estimate... Hawkstone Park is an amazing place which I visited with me mum while I was at university in Stoke. Seem to recall climbing a tower as well - but definitely got the trig! | DanHolme | 01/08/1998 |
Went up the stair ladder to the caves and then the top. Well worth the effort! | Lesley Jackson | 04/07/1998 |
