Parked in the layby near the top of the road in Cowpe to the N. Followed fp up onto the plateau and a large path zig zag until the wind turbine emerged from the cloud. Visited the boundary hp on the side of the track (very small cairn marker on N side) and across the bog to the main hp marked with a clear small cairn. Completed the circular walk past Waugh's Well and back down to Cowpe. Drizzle and cloud began to lift on the final descent. Solo.richard6914/12/2023
Parked on Bleakholt Road in Turn, close to the junction with the A680 - Up the Rossendale Way to junction with the windfarm track at 832188; the first 500m or so is on footpath alongside A680 to fingerpost on bend & wooden steps over wall - E. along track to UA Top grid reference; no sign of tiny cairn. Continued E. for another 60m or so & located a small cairn in tussock at SD 84435 18922, but don't think this marks the UA Top.gerrybowes08/08/2023
Although I've been up here many times I've never specifically tracked down the exact summits, so tonight I had a nice evening walk from Turn, over Whittle Hill, the two summits on Hailstorm Hill and then the trig capped off with a beautiful sunset. /Dmeltdiceburg18/04/2023
Rossendale Round bagging hills and Marilyns, with drifting snow on the Moors.PhilipChaston11/03/2023
Very wet on top following on from the main summit.colinfielding07/02/2023
Parked at Boarsgreave, then along ROWs to Top of Leach. Along county boundary to the wind turbines, crossing Hail Storm Hill boundary top en route. Then a desolate direct ascent of the Hill proper (bring wellies!) and on over Cragg Quarry to Cowpe Low. Returned via ROWs to the houses below.summitter31/10/2022
Failed to find the cairn (a picture circulating online suggests I was looking on the wrong side of the windmill-poor planning on my part) after trudging across sodden bog, but visited most likely high points. The perfectionist in me will no doubt tempt me back up on a clearer day to locate said small pile of rocks, but I'm bagging it for now.. Eerie, atmospheric in the mist with only the sounds of the wind turbine plummeting towards you as you walk underneath.. quite intimidating I must sayAlfa1M25/10/2022

3 of 3 starting in waterfoot on 7 mile hike. Lovely sunny day. Had lunch on the steps of the wind turbineThe-Z-Man21/06/2022
1/2 Hail Storm Hill Boundary followed by the Marilyn Hail Storm Hill. Up from Cowpe after parking at the new builds near the Mill at the end of the road - good parking. Went up the North side of Cowpe reservoir and the path climbs well here up to the Pennine Bridleway and Rossendale Way then used paths to the Trig Point, then on to the Boundary (use your grid reference and pace about and you find the tiny tiny cairn) then direct as a dye over the not too marshy ground in summer to the Marilyn and down via the interesting mine workings. Made a nice two hour walk on way home after checkpointing at the Trans Pennine Hundred (LDWA)nickywood105/06/2022

Parked at free car park off Cowpe Road (SD83405 21409) which isn't obvious to find after braving the rush hour traffic on the M60. Then set off in full waterproofs in the rain up to Cowpe and Boarsgrove. Had to drag the dog along as it was wet and windy!! Past the abandoned vehicles to the reservoir then up to the MB quarry. Borough HP not obvious in the mist (used GPS) then along to the summit cairn and across to Cowpe Lowe. Cloud lifted and gave great views of South Pennines. Took off waterproofs and ran down to car with a wet and tired dog! 9.2km 339m ascent.John Eley09/08/2019
With Val. Very hot weather. After going to the Hailstorm Hill TP and the Marilyn summit found the County high point using SatNav device. Up from Boarsgreave.mike.hoult22/07/2019
10km trail run from Cowpe - saw some interesting mountain bike trails on an old quarry and a fire!ByronHaywood23/04/2019
A rather nice boundry stone to be found, and nice little weather shelterSeanTither27/03/2019
With E. From Cowpe. Parked in what use to be The Buck PH car park but pub now closed and converted into houses. Up Pennine Bridleway to Coupe Low trig point, then along Rossendale Way past old Cragg Quarry following former tramway. Along new access road to summit marked with a small pile of stones at roadside. Across boggy ground to old boundary post and Top of Leach trig point then continued to Rooley Moor Road and down into Cowpe. Dry and windy. Good views.Beeliner19/02/2019
From Cowpe via Top of Leach. TOL has a trig and 1974 boundary pillar and good views from the NE round to the NW. Approach from TOL was across moor top on reasonable path (marshy in patches). Handy substantial wind shelter made from ruins stones about 300m to the NE. Burnt out car shell next to the wind turbine.Nick Caunt13/12/2018
From near new houses in Cowpe, past all the old Land Rovers onto hill, following paths up to wind farm. HP just off track near turbine. On to the top.PeterD06/10/2018
From end of road at Cowpe where there are now new houses built. Was a tumbledown factory the last time I visited. FP goes through a scrapyard of farm equipment before emerging onto moor and eventually a large wind farm. Up and down in 65 minutes.Campbell Singer31/05/2018
One of three from the parking area in Cowpe - sign says this will be closed from 5th May. Up to Cowpe Low mostly along the bridleway then a slightly boggy walk from the old quarry to Hail Storm Hill and the county top.the_adam21/04/2018
Indeterminate spot on side of hill a few m to the W of the windfarm track. En route to Hail Storm HillDenise 24/02/2018
From Hailstorm Ridge trig over nice hard frozen moorland to something of a dissapointment, not even any sign of the small cairn. Bright sunshine, cutting NE wind.RichardM24/02/2018
Started at Limefield. Walked via Walmersley Golf Club and Cheesden. Ascended Hail Storm Hill via Paradise. Descended south-east to Prickshaw then walked via Healey Dell to Healey Corner.lecube11/11/2017
From Borgreaves, small layby opposite new houses. Hail Storm Ridge trig first, then a bog-trot on to Hail Storm Hill.jonglew10/11/2017
I won't be going back even if there is free beer! Most interesting part was watching locals trying to pull a Landrover stuck in the mud in the quarry. I left before they succeeded, or gave up.Minto05/11/2017

Parked at the top end of Cowpe village and walked a clockwise (unwise) circuit of trig, county top and Marilyn. Through a tractor graveyard lower down then onto the open moor. The trig pillar has a nearby imposter and is probably worth visiting. However, this then means a trudge across a mire. The County top is uninspiring and unless they start handing out free beer there I wont be going back.stig_nest05/09/2017
From Cowpe picnic area. Solo. Cowpe Lowe, Hail Storm Hill & Hail Storm Hill boundary. Searched but couldn't find the tiny cairn.ADT24/08/2017

From NNE, Rooley Moor Rd, parking for 1 a short way before top of public road, straightforward on good tracks, bitter E wind with driven snow, quick out and back. My final Current English Co/UA Top.RHW12/02/2017
Unremarkable here, other nearby peaks offer better views.berksbantam25/10/2016
Adequate roadside parking within Cowpe village at an altitude of 853ft. Don't try and pass through though and drive into Boarsgreave (narrow road and bumpy). Follow the road through Boarsgreave and thread your way along a path almost blocked by rusting vehicles. Once past these and on Rooley Moor Road there are stoned roads to use Turn right along to the Rossendale Way. After passing the reservoir turn left then right before a short moor trot heading for the prominent wind turbine ahead of you.moorsman20/10/2016

Walked up from old mill in Cowpe, past Higher Boarsgreave and joined Rossendale Way. On route to Marilyn. No real path to highest point. Walked directly due south , up hill from Cragg High Level Tank. Very misty day, with light fading.Lazylizzie04/01/2014
Ran up from A680. Nice afternoon, bit boggy.stever10/09/2013
Climbed from Cowpe. Much easier to climb in the middle of a dry spell.JohnStoneham11/07/2013
Parked nr head of Cowpe Lane by old mill, at SD841206. Followed FP to lane and Trig (best viewpt) - onto old summit nr wind turbines, then damp but easy ground (no hags by my definition) to 'new' top. The most dull of all three points. Visualy the old top seems higher so best do both in case remeasured. Back on Pennine Bridleway.nordicstar29/06/2013

Done while bagging marilyn. From Cowpe, up Rooley Moor road to Top of Leach trig. Wandered around looking for summit (anyone's guess)& returned via Rossendale Way & Pennine Bridleway. Broken cloud, cold wind & deep snow drifts in places. Pub in Cowpe gone by the way...ianandbarbara03/04/2013
An extended snowy bog-trot from the E trig to Hail Storm Hill. Unable to find tiny cairn marking summit in snow. Area all looks much the same height. New windfarm road has appeared since last visit in 2006.Aye Jimmy17/03/2013
Hail storm hill is a great place. If you ascend to the north from Cowpe then you can pass Fo Edge and Waugh's well which are two great places dedicated to the old Northern writer and poet Edwin Waugh. The summit of Hail storm hill offers great views and many things to explore such as the 26 wind turbines and the cross dedicated to Geoffrey Molyneux who was lost there on flying operations in 1955 which is also known as Whittle hill locallyBuryFCA128/01/2013
Done from a variety of roots. Really boggy when approached along the ridge from top of Leach, but have also come up the Dearden Valley, on to the quarry tracks and over to it - still boggy though. Have also MTB from Ashworth Reservoirhillgorilla26/01/2013

Hiked as part of a 50 mile south pennine challenge. Miserable weather, and over that distance, such small hills are brutal!wee mac17/05/2008
Lovely walk up from Cowpe and around the valley head; shame about the slog across the peat bog to reach the CT & marilyn. Indeterminate point somewhere near a new works road that's been driven up here from the far side of the hill.wheresthepath28/04/2007
