| Parked in the layby near the top of the road in Cowpe to the N. Followed fp up onto the plateau and a large path zig zag until the wind turbine emerged from the cloud. Visited the boundary hp on the side of the track (very small cairn marker on N side) and across the bog to the main hp marked with a clear small cairn. Completed the circular walk past Waugh's Well and back down to Cowpe. Drizzle and cloud began to lift on the final descent. Solo. | richard69 | 14/12/2023 |
| Parked on Bleakholt Road in Turn, close to the junction with the A680 - Up the Rossendale Way to junction with the windfarm track at 832188; the first 500m or so is on footpath alongside A680 to fingerpost on bend & wooden steps over wall - E. along track to UA Top grid reference; no sign of tiny cairn. | Parked at Boarsgreave, then along ROWs to Top of Leach. Along county boundary to the wind turbines, crossing Hail Storm Hill boundary top en route. Then a desolate direct ascent of the Hill proper (bring wellies!) and on over Cragg Quarry to Cowpe Low. Returned via ROWs to the houses below. | summitter | 31/10/2022 |
| Failed to find the cairn (a picture circulating online suggests I was looking on the wrong side of the windmill-poor planning on my part) after trudging across sodden bog, but visited most likely high points. The perfectionist in me will no doubt tempt me back up on a clearer day to locate said small pile of rocks, but I'm bagging it for now.. | 1/2 Hail Storm Hill Boundary followed by the Marilyn Hail Storm Hill. Up from Cowpe after parking at the new builds near the Mill at the end of the road - good parking. Went up the North side of Cowpe reservoir and the path climbs well here up to the Pennine Bridleway and Rossendale Way then used paths to the Trig Point, then on to the Boundary (use your grid reference and pace about and you find the tiny tiny cairn) then direct as a dye over the not too marshy ground in summer to the Marilyn and down via the interesting mine workings. | Parked at free car park off Cowpe Road (SD83405 21409) which isn't obvious to find after braving the rush hour traffic on the M60. Then set off in full waterproofs in the rain up to Cowpe and Boarsgrove. Had to drag the dog along as it was wet and windy!! Past the abandoned vehicles to the reservoir then up to the MB quarry. Borough HP not obvious in the mist (used GPS) then along to the summit cairn and across to Cowpe Lowe. Cloud lifted and gave great views of South Pennines. | With E. From Cowpe. Parked in what use to be The Buck PH car park but pub now closed and converted into houses. Up Pennine Bridleway to Coupe Low trig point, then along Rossendale Way past old Cragg Quarry following former tramway. Along new access road to summit marked with a small pile of stones at roadside. Across boggy ground to old boundary post and Top of Leach trig point then continued to Rooley Moor Road and down into Cowpe. Dry and windy. Good views. | Beeliner | 19/02/2019 |
| From Cowpe via Top of Leach. TOL has a trig and 1974 boundary pillar and good views from the NE round to the NW. Approach from TOL was across moor top on reasonable path (marshy in patches). | Parked at the top end of Cowpe village and walked a clockwise (unwise) circuit of trig, county top and Marilyn. Through a tractor graveyard lower down then onto the open moor. The trig pillar has a nearby imposter and is probably worth visiting. However, this then means a trudge across a mire. | Adequate roadside parking within Cowpe village at an altitude of 853ft. Don't try and pass through though and drive into Boarsgreave (narrow road and bumpy). Follow the road through Boarsgreave and thread your way along a path almost blocked by rusting vehicles. Once past these and on Rooley Moor Road there are stoned roads to use Turn right along to the Rossendale Way. | Hail storm hill is a great place. If you ascend to the north from Cowpe then you can pass Fo Edge and Waugh's well which are two great places dedicated to the old Northern writer and poet Edwin Waugh. The summit of Hail storm hill offers great views and many things to explore such as the 26 wind turbines and the cross dedicated to Geoffrey Molyneux who was lost there on flying operations in 1955 which is also known as Whittle hill locally | BuryFCA1 | 28/01/2013 |
