Logged Descriptions  (logged by 325 users)ByDate of Ascent
Quick ascent (1h 15m), mostly loose snow above 700m, but extremely cold (-8 °C in the glen, much lower on top) with dangerously severe wind chill on the summit, exposed skin was at risk in seconds. 50 min to get back down to Melgarve!NorfolkPT2109/01/2024
From the end of the public road near Melgarve bothy- along the track past the bothy, then a NW line up the hillside to gain the more distinct ridge to the summit. On to Geal Charn in quiet trying snow conditions underfoot, although the wind was light and the views fantastic. Underfoot conditions meant that time was short and so dropped back down to the track and back to Melgarve. 11.3km, 4h 15Rockdoctor29/12/2023
With Meall na h-Aisre. Time includes two miles along Wade's road by car after some kind bothymongers stopped and offered a lift. From Garva Bridge, up new road to Na h-Aisre, bog bash through to Garbeinn, down to Melgarve and back along road (until about two miles short of Garva Bridge). Sunny all day, but strong winds for Gairbeinn and return trip. Rounsfell12/11/2023
Wildlife on road approach - red squirrel, hares, red deer, vole. Steady climb. Did not continue to Corrieyairack Hill.langskill18/06/2023

From Melgarve by road to Allt a'Mhill Ghairbh. Up the west side of the burn, good animal tracks, and into corrie. Less steep route.iangalbraith18/03/2023
From good parking at Melgarve (NN467959), W along track to beyond Caochan Bàn, then N up slopes just E of Meall Garbh Mòr and Meall Garbh Beag to SW slopes of Gairbeinn and up to its summit, continued N to an old fence line, descended NW to col, up to summit of Carn an Aonaich Odhair, followed fence line loosely to summit of Geal Charn, then on to summit of Corrieyairack Hill, followed fence SW down to track at Corrieyairack Pass, SE on track back to start (5h20m)kdbennett11/09/2022
Solo anti-clockwise round of Meall na h-Aisre and Gairbeinn from Melgarve - parked in the small parking area just before the road closed signs, then walked East until the new cable road which I followed up to about 450m and then took a direct line across the heather and straight up to the (claggy) summit. Then headed West across the peat bogs, then up and over past Dubh Lochain to the NE section of ridge that leads SW to end up at Gairbeinn's summit (clear skies by this point), before dropping back down to Melgarve. Bit of a slog, but glad I got both done. Total time: 5h 32min.mproudfoot11/09/2022

From Melgarve road end with Grant, Rod and Stephen up south ridge of Gairbeinn then followed fence lines Geal Charn and Corrieyairick Hill to pass and descent back to car.SS07/06/2022
Good parking near the road end before Melgarve. Past Melgarve, pathless but good ground up the Caochan Ban, very good progress up the steeper but straightforward slopes to the summit. Cloud base at about 650m asl so didn't see much.Owen B22/05/2022

Due west from Meall na h-Aisre. Low cloud and rain. Bog not as bad as I had heard. A deep river that I wasn't expecting was easily crossed 100m upstream. Aimed for Dubh Lochan, but the area and bog around was soaked. Started on south-west ridge but along with rain was high winds. Face blasted to bits. Long walk back to Garva Bridge. Lots of deer and saw farmer feeding them for the slaughter!Jhimmy22/04/2018

A circuit of Meall na h-Aisre and Gairbeinn on a stunning spring day, starting from Garva Bridge and the bike stashed at Melgarve for a quick return (I'm allergic to walking on tarmac). MnhA is unremarkable, but the peat bogs connecting it to Gairbeinn are reminiscent of Kinder Scout on anabolic steroids. Following the ruined fence provides a good guide to the easiest going. Dry weather is a great help; you can float effortlessly across the peat. The highlight is being able to walk the full length of the splendid, mossy summit ridge of Gairbeinn. Bag these hills now before the view is spoiled by the huge windfarm currently under construction.Gill01/05/2017

Despite its remoteness Gairbeinn is an easy ascent from the public road end 500m east of Melgarve. The local ground is smooth and mostly dry, the vegetation is short and there were surprisingly few insects even in sheltered sections.Topographer5705/08/2011
