From small layby on Dean's Lane, then up wet path in a ploughed field. Sadly, it was a dreich afternoon so the view from the monument was grey and disappointing | Colin Crawford | 20/11/2023 |
2nd hill of 10k circuit from Bathpool park southern circ using tracks and veering off to climb Ashenough then down to road, through Talke and Parrots Drumble over the A500 then on a footpath all the way to the top. I had lunch on one of the steps to the monument but made sure to visit the high point not far from the Trig pillar. Great views into the Cheshire plain and the Shropshire hills. I took an extended return route having to detour past a new housing development called Chatterley. Next up Linley... | Dazingdale | 01/04/2023 |
A circular route at start of track on audley road following the well worn paths. 2.2 mile about 45 mins | The-Z-Man | 11/01/2023 |
Parked in small lay-by on Dean's Lane as gerrybowes but the path was ploughed up so we walked to the path 230 m up the Audley road. This was fine. We enjoyed the extensive views of the five towns to the S and hills to the N from the crumbling monument. Sunny, showers getting closer, one with rainbow over Jodrell Bank. Good field path down to Dean's Lane and 400 m back on the tarmac to our starting point. With Pete. | pwheeler | 15/10/2022 |
Parked to S by 208 spot height. ROW to trig and summit. | PGCE | 24/07/2022 |
Parked in small lay-by on Dean's Lane at SJ 8224 5066 - Over stile & N. along a well-worn path across a field of ripening barley - From junction continued N. to trig point & summit. No need to any climb bwf; lots of gaps close to summit. | gerrybowes | 28/06/2022 |
From Dean's Lane | Longwojo | 02/04/2022 |
John Wedgwood -horticulturist and son of Wedgwood pottery founder d 1839 declared in his will ..I desire my body to be interred at the summit of a certain field called Old Hill and my excetors do cause an monument to be erected... It was blown down in 1979 and is now only 1/4 of its height. His father Josiah Wedgwood founded the famous pottery (still going strong), was an anti slavery campaigner, instigator of the Trent-Mersey canal (kinder on his pottery than road travel!) and business savy – he introduced bogof, colour brochures & celebrity (royal) endorsements. The Wedgwoods also owned the former Bignall Hill colliery on N slope which like most had its series of horrific disasters and loss of life due to the explosion of gas (firedamp) by using naked flames before miners safety lamps invented whereby gauze surround absorbed heat of the flame but let the light filter out . | Chris Pearson | 24/03/2022 |
Circular with R+R from Black Bank car park. | Dan Baddeley | 26/09/2021 |
Walked through a wheat field onto a path where you can see two white reservoir buildings and at the summit there is Wedgewood’s monument went with Dad Mum and Dulcie. | speedyclimber | 28/08/2021 |
On potteries LDWA walk a revisit today. | nickywood1 | 12/06/2021 |
On evening before LDWA Potteries walk | nickywood1 | 11/06/2021 |
Easy walk from Bignall End Road in NW along track and then grassy path up northern shoulder. All public rights of way. A fine summit and viewpoint despite its lowly height. If would doubtless be a popular local beauty spot were it not for the unsightly disrepaired Wedgewood monument and nearby barbed wire fences and concrete pillars. Get your act together Newcastle-under-Lyme borough council! Walked solo with dog. Fine sunny weather .... first summit bag since Covid-19 epidemic! | jamessteel100 | 14/05/2020 |
Great views. Parked by road junction to the south. Strange unmarked monument by the top. It is fenced off so, if you wanted to remember whatever it is there for, you could not. | clivevilla | 26/02/2020 |
With Minnie from verge parking near 208 spot, across meadow to stile & fenceline path to top/trig, impressive monument if a little tired & in need of tlc, would have thought The Wedgewood co would look after it, warm & dry though cloudy, back same way then a wander round Apedale. | apricorum | 12/08/2019 |
Parked on Deans Lane layby. Easy enough walk to summit. Awesome views (also spotted Jodrell). Loads of butterflies and birds. After summit continued ahead passed small pool then headed to Bignall Hill Hill road and walked up back to layby. | iron_sun | 10/07/2019 |
Parked roadside, across field then up to monument. | ironwolf | 10/07/2019 |
With Evie and Tol. Parked near Woodlands Farm. Crossed dismantled railway now used for fly tipping! Otherwise nice walk and a great viewpoint in all directions. Shame the monument is not cared for. 91m ascent. | RoguePulsar | 14/08/2018 |
Last on a cold walk from Keele. Grassy mound in sheep grazed pasture 6m NNW of trig point and in the shaddow of the sqat Wedgwood's monument. | RichardM | 27/02/2018 |
From Deans Lane. Meadow path with attendant skylarks. Stubby pinnacle which looks more impressive from a distance. In need of some restorative work. Superb viewpoint ove the Cheshire Plain. | Campbell Singer | 02/07/2017 |
From Dean's lane - under B/W to trig | Bramley | 28/04/2017 |
Four-Tump circuit from Bradwell. Ascended from the NW, descended SE. Good views. | davidpettit84 | 23/04/2017 |
From Ashenough Hill, a fairly direct route almost all off road. The crossing of the A500 was a bit unpleasant. A very fine view and a spot worthy of any hillwalkers bootprints.
Had a nice chat with a local dogwalker whilst at the obelisk. Nearly done for the day now.. one more..
P/S local council. Tidy the summit area up please. Concrete fence posts need to be removed.. | stig_nest | 14/03/2017 |
From Deans Lane, Red Kites sited. | MRDC | 13/02/2017 |

From SJ822506. After orienteering in Bathpool Park. | summitsup | 01/01/2017 |
Parked at SJ 82228 50658 (enough room for 2 cars without blocking the gate). Followed well worn path northwards to summit. Fence long gone around monument, but trig point guarded excessively by barbed wire fence. | David Evans | 14/11/2016 |
From South to Monument which has seen better day.Under barbed wire fence to trig point. | PeterD | 22/03/2016 |
F/p from T-junction to S. Shabby monument and trig. | Aye Jimmy | 08/03/2016 |

14.14... nice time numbers too, on my daughter Lucy's truncated icosahedron birthday!!! okay I'm enthused with polyhedra as well as hills n trigs | vegibagger | 14/03/2015 |
Parked on tiny muddy lay-by at SJ 82235 50657. Good footpath to summit but there is definitely one barbed wire fence to climb to reach the trig pillar and the highest point adjacent. | David Gradwell | 13/10/2013 |
Parked mainly off the road to SE. Dog walkers seem to block gate with their car. Easy stroll. No barbed wire. Pleasant. | destaylor | 25/07/2013 |
Gate at trrack to res. Across barbed wire to ROW w of res back ROW E of res. | chrisbien | 18/03/2013 |
An easy initial approach from the south-east, the excessive quantity of barbed wire slows you down if you want to reach the trig point rather than the monument. | JohnStoneham | 10/03/2013 |
By RoW, from lane to SE. easy though brisk cold winds, snow and ice, good viewpoint. | nordicstar | 25/01/2013 |
Walked up from Longport train station, no joke in this heat, and via Crackley bank to the top. Well worth it for the views, and for the walk back via the nature reserves in Apedale. | DanHolme | 26/05/2012 |
As Pete says. Nice quick short walk with good views around. | The Team | 13/05/2012 |
Parked at entrance to a small covered reservoir, back along road to a signed path over grass to column 2676 at 10.20. Wedgwood monument just shows his name and dates and places of his birth and death. In need of much TLC. | arranc | 15/04/2012 |
Easy ascent from the south | simon and co | 16/03/2012 |
Half a mile from main road - trip point next to monument | mikependergast | 23/02/2012 |
Parked at side of minor rd, followed by quick walf up ROW to top. Excellent views :-) | heavyhorses | 26/12/2011 |
