Curleywee, Lamachan Hill and Larg Hill from Glen Trool with John. Parked at Bruce's Stone car park, and headed E along the track, following it S then E again. Left the track to head directly up the N slopes of White Hill (horrible tussocky terrain). Terrain got better as we got up to the top, and headed across to Curleywee. Then across the Lamachan Hill via Scars of Milldown & Bennabrack. Decided to tack on Larg Hill as the winds weren't as fierce as expected and it didn't add much time on, and there was a faint path all the way between them. After Larg hill, returned to Lamachan and headed N and NE taking a twising route back down to the track, across more of the awful tussocky terrain (ankles beware). On reaching the track, we stopped to shed a layer, put the sticks away and grab a bite, before the 2.5mi back to the car. Total time 6:25min, with a stop at Bruce's stone. | mproudfoot | 03/02/2024 |
Pick of the day. Steep ascent but with a trodden way. Only hill with any shape on this circuit from Lamachan to White Hill. | langskill | 28/07/2023 |

Via White Hill. Horrible terrain from the track to the N. A faint path leaves the track at 4535 7854 but soon peters out. | 49pp | 13/09/2022 |
Took the tent to Castle Douglas for the weekend, parked at Auchinleck on Saturday 18th June. Headed westerly around forestry tracks before gaining Garlick Hill (trig has no reference plague) then north to Larg Hill, east across Lamachan Hill, Curlywee and Millfore (trig had no ref plague either). Then turned south to Drigmorn and back in car, 09:45hrs all in, dry all day, but a cold strong wind.

Tried these hills in March but fallen trees blocked my ascent up a fire break, hence the circular route around Garlick Hill. | chillyman8 | 18/06/2022 |
Drove gravel forest road from Auchinleck to junction at NX 442758. Along forest road W, first firebreak R, then steady ascent onto SE ridge of Larg Hill, over the shoulder to Punch Well Brae (a superb vantage point with views to the coasts), then along the ridge to Larg Hill, Lamachan Hill, Scars of Milldown and a surprisingly straighforward ascent of impressive Curleywee, before visiting Brennan Hill and returning W along an old land rover track on the near side of a deer fence, which led back to the forest road. A memorable walk with grandstand views into the Awful Hand range. | Nick Down1 | 29/05/2022 |
From White Hill and on to Bennan. Straightforward. | sclater | 18/03/2022 |
Parked car at Bruce's Stone and walked to Shiel Burn which was completely overgrown with pine trees. Ended up taking a long diversion through difficult terrain to get back to the burn up near the Nick of Lochans and then Cambrick Hill to Nick of the Brushy and up to Larg Hill where I felt that my first bag of the day was well deserved. Lamachan Hill and Curleywee were much easier. Down to White Hill and back to Cycleway 7 which was also hard work due to the terrain. Walk back along the track in the dark. | tsharp | 11/01/2022 |
Steep climb in mist with Degsy and Steve Smith. 4th of 5 for the day. Onwards to White Hill. | bolton | 11/11/2021 |
Adapted route on https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/galloway/lamachan-hill.shtml with alterations to first section to avoid path overgrown with bracken by walking East along Southern Upland way until a new track was found, then when path up right side of Caldons Burn disappeared, branched right up Mulmein Burn initially using convenient track through clearfell, then to col between Lamachan Hill and Larg Hill, then dogleg out to Punch Well Brae. Note very rough on ascent/descent 8hrs for the round. | PeteF | 12/09/2021 |
Drove forest road, parked Black Laggan (NX 4683 7780). Track to White Laggan then straight up to White Hill over steep rough ground then an easy crossing to here. On to Scars of Milldown -> Lamachan Hill -> Bennan Hill and return for a 10.6km round. | jonglew | 04/09/2021 |
After Lamachen hill. Steep climb, but short. | Jhimmy | 29/08/2021 |
After Lamachan Hill. Nice ridge. Tough descent to White Laggan. | Iloveducks | 27/08/2021 |

Walk from Auchinleck: Black and White Bewees, Bennan Hill, Curleywee, Lamachan Hill, Mulldonach, Larg Hill and Garlick Hill. 16 hard miles on a fantastic day. | jigglybones | 14/04/2021 |
From Glen Trool. 26.77km, 1457m ascent, 8hrs | Huwel | 25/02/2021 |
Parked at Bruce's stone car park near Loch Trool, and gained the high ground by way of the waterfall being fed by the Sheil burn. First popping up Mulldonoch before contouring round Lamachan to the col with Larg hill, visiting the summit of Larg hill and then following the wall and a grassy track to Craignaw. Once I retraced my steps back to the col I continued up to Lamachan hill and then over the Scars of Milldown to reach Curleywee. Returning back to the car by descending White hill which was rough going to reach the Southern upland way. Just over Fourteen mile in Seven hours. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 11/10/2020 |
From Loch Trool with A, up via the Tussocks of White Hill and on to Lamachan Hill with clouds lifting as we went. | PeterD | 01/09/2020 |
Parked at track junction (approx 441754) - Sunday morning so no forestry workers about. Went N along W side of deer fence: open fell reached easily. Curleywee, Bennanbrack, Lamachan and Larg Hill. | PGCE | 17/11/2019 |
Drove up track a couple of kilometres then out and up Bennan Hill, followed by Curlywee, Scars of Mildown, Bennanbrook, Lamachan Hill and Larg Hill then down to firebreak and relatively short walk to car. | SS | 06/07/2019 |
Came down from Larg Hill and starting up Lamachan Hill, met the two girls contouring Cambrick Hill, en-route to Larg H. I continued over Lamachan H to Bennanbrack, stopping for lunch there, and then contiuing to Nick of Curleywee and up to summit of C. Dropped of N over White Hill and veered NW to run into tough crags and v rough terrain - difficult - to reach SUW track back to P at Glen Trool. Cloudied over on approach to C but no rain and sun returned later. Going S off C to wall and path to White Laggan might be a better descent route. First visit was solo on 08/05/2015/ | jacobus | 18/06/2019 |
Beginning from Loch Trool I followed the forest track and the turned off and made my way up to the summit of Curleywee (674m). From there I dropped down to Bennan Hill and White Bennan Hill before then climbing back up to Bennanbrack and onto the highest point of the day at Lamachan (716m). I then dropped down to Mulldonanch and finished with a difficult descent through tussocks and felled forest to Loch Trool. Including a walk around the Loch at the end I clocked up about 15 miles on a dry sunny day. | meltdiceburg | 22/04/2019 |
Third and last Donald of the day. Great hill. Headed south to the forest track to pick up the bike. | Play2End | 11/09/2018 |
From Craigencallie Lodge.. track to White Laggan then up the obvious ridge. Wet and windy. | N.Morters | 28/07/2018 |
From Glen Trool car park via Lamachan Hill, Larg Hill, back to Lamachan Hill and on via Bennanbrack. Down via White Hill. | Winterfloodian | 07/06/2018 |
Parking area at end of Loch Trool road (416804) & up Mulldonoch, Larg Hill, Lamachan Hill & Scars of Milldown. From Scars of Milldown, continued following faint path alongside metal fence posts down to col & then a steep climb up to summit cairn. Dropped down to White Hill & then a tussocky descent between crags to forest track & back to car. (S) | gerrybowes | 06/06/2018 |
Largs Hill, Lamachan, Bennanbrack, Curleywee, white hill | Longwojo | 06/06/2018 |
Parked at top of forestry track below Lamachan Hill (No forestry activities evident) thereby saving very long walk-in and back. Firstly up Larg Hill then path across Lamachan and ridge over to the fine summit of Curlywee. Some rough ground descending plus a deer fence to cross. Best keeping to the right of the main burn. | AndrewFinnimore | 01/05/2018 |
Our last hill on a superb sunny clear day with magnificent wild views. Small cairn on obvious top.Returned via newly restored White Laggan Bothy and fast but tedious gravel forest track through much felled forest. | Denise | 24/03/2018 |
Last of the Cairngarroch - Curleywee horseshoe and a very fine hill to end on. Ascent of the WSW ridge of gleaming Black Siliceous Shale rock. Very fine views from the summit include the distant Ailsa Craig. Great midge free weather. | RichardM | 24/03/2018 |

A really fine hill, though unbelievably rough ground to get to it. | Gill | 03/07/2015 |
Last hill of Five today starting from Bargrennan on an alternative Southern Upland Way route to St.John's town of Dalry. Route was SUW branching off to cross the old brige over the Minnoch, Borgan Hill, Craignaw, Lamachan Hill, Scars of Milldown and then down and up the steep hillside to the cairn. Although it was steep, the bare rock made it easier to climb. From here I descended on a bearing to the White Laggan bothy and back onto the SUW as it was getting late and I had miles and miles still to walk. I got into St.Johns Town of Dalry at 10.40pm!! | Dazingdale | 09/05/2015 |
