Turned out to be our last day on Colonsay. As when came round headland and back into the land of mobile phone reception I received a text from Calmac to say our homeward ferry the next day was cancelled. So had to make a hurried departure that night whilst there was still likely to be a ferry running. Two observations about Colonsay. It is the boggiest island I have ever visited and it has the worst ferry service (ferry was being cancelled roughly every third day for operational/technical reasons).
Anyway, as couldn't cross to Oransay went up this hill on rough pathless terrain from car park. Two summits both of which are good viewpoints. From the main summit we descended south-ish to walk round the headland back to the car park. | Fife Walking | 21/10/2022 |
After walking out to the narrowest crossing point to Oronsay, and waiting for 45 mins to see if the tide would go out, which it didn't, I had to console myself with a wander up here. | Minto | 11/04/2022 |
On the way back from Oronsay. Took track up to the house and veered off right just before the gate. Followed several trods, some false leads and a little backtracking, some straight forward scrambling, before emerging at top of the ridge and an easy crossing to the HP. Trig bolt found under the cairn. | jonglew | 09/09/2021 |
From the road end whilst waiting for the tide to recede for a crossing to Oronsay. Took longer than I thought, with much bracken and a few crags. Great viewpoint over to Jura. | NormanW | 24/08/2021 |
From the road end across the salt marshes and gradually up over heather, grass and rocks. Fantastic view point. Also visited NR37672 90227, a pleasant grassy walk about 240m SW, where the rocky point looked as high as the summit. | LizH | 19/05/2021 |

Day 1 of Rob and my Macfies round leaving the northern Macfies for Day 2. Sunny, windy, and great viz. Tough heathery hills and difficult nav. | alexmaclennan | 29/08/2020 |
Walked from the causeway end on Colonsay across the salt marsh and over heathery terraces to the summit and back. A surprisingly intricate route. | Nick Down1 | 22/04/2019 |
4th tump of 8 today on a 30.3km Colonsay and Oronsay completion walk, climbing Dun Gallain and Carn Spiris before crossing over with 2ft of water at 08.10 to climb to Beinn Oronsay, returning via the track to cross back over at 08.56 (2 mins after low tide) with only a few inches depth, heading direct direct for Beinn Eibhne, taking the track to Poll Gorm then detouring around to climb a wide grassy gully with steep crags either side and Choughs soaring and shrien. Once at the top, it is a simple traverse to get to the summit. I recorded 99m @ NR 37906 90351 before heading down NE to the beautiful wee bay (where I changed my socks) Next tump Beinn Arnicil... | Dazingdale | 10/05/2018 |
B8086 and B8085 from Scalasaig almost to The Strand, track to and just past Balerominmore, then south-westwards towards summit. Hard going - burnt heather and much bog all the way up. Dull after earlier sunshine but good views - Oronsay spread out like a map. Descent east-north-eastwards, still through bog and burnt heather, eventually finding rough footpath leading to Tràigh an Eacail. Sea too rough for a swim, but sun out again and warm, so a chance to dry some clothes. Up track past Balerominmore to road and back to Scalasaig. | mainnirnamfiadh | 26/09/2016 |
From the road end. Reached the top via Hangman's Rock and a 'tour' above the crags. Superb. | summitsup | 12/06/2015 |
