Walk with L added to a shopping trip to Scalloway. Photogenic overnight snow lying down to sea-level and glistening in the low winter sun. Only a gentle NW breeze!! (briefly) but temps still around zero. First over the P20 of Berry Hill whose summit is 9m higher than the trig. Extraordinary meeting with the cheerful friendly farmer of Burwick who shared with us a potted history of his life. Married at 20, his wife was 16 -still together after 49 years, 4 children. Once almost a professional footballer then a fish buyer and alcoholic. Found God - saved himself.. and others. Owns most of the surrounding land and islands with his extended family -has about 200 sheep. Lived in Spain in winter until recently -but nothing much to do there -and they missed grandchildren here so returned. Next came marriage advice - we nodded and stroked his cat - and waved to his wife who having felt the sun's feeble warmth was putting out washing to dry!(likely to be as stiff as cardboard within an hour?)Chris Pearson11/01/2021
