Walked up track from road to NE to trig and HP | PeterD | 10/05/2023 |
Translates as the Eagle's Beacon - and a fine early morning vantage point before my day return flight to Aberdeen for hospital apptmt (funded by NHS for Shetland residents as we are during out 6 month stay). Hill looks S over a beautiful mosaic of farms, fields, cliffs, curving beaches and the sea (always the sea) - with Sumburgh airport terminal rather standing out like a 1970s shopping precinct. To N lives arable farmer Kevin who we met recently- latest of the JK Mainland arable famers started by his grandfather (on his mother's side) who grows veg here and is one of Tesco suppliers and now does veg box deliveries. His grandfather had thousands of tattie bags with the Mainland family name on them which they still have so Kevin is happy to be known as Kevin Mainland even though he is Kevin Houlihan! The rich fertile sandstone soils that run down the east coast spreads inland here before the ground surges steeply upwards up on the granite intrusion of Fitful Head. | Chris Pearson | 24/02/2021 |
