Up from Hillswick after a circuit around the Ness. Hillswick is a small but appealing and fascinating settlement - we counted no more than 30 houses in all but within that includes a health centre, community shop, kirk, community fire station, the huge gothic looking all wood Magnus Bay Hotel - rebuilt here in 1902, after it had been on show, at the Great Exhibition of 1896 in Glasgow. At its height of popularity in 1908 sailings from Edinburgh brought tourists for a weeks stay. How it will cope with the loss of income during Covid must be a worry. Currently being extended is the marine rescue centre (otters, seals etc). Our favourite spot was however the community garden (and public loo) with old toilets as flower pots and all manner of creative earthy designs and bug hotels. Hillswick is also on a dead end offshoot of the road to Eshaness so very tranquil. The beach pebbles are from far and wide due to the old practice of visiting boats dumping ballast.Chris Pearson28/04/2021
