As per RHW's log. | jonglew | 05/07/2021 |
From SW, Aird Uig, walked clifftop to 90m rhen steeply down steep grass E side of gully (gully itself not nice) scramble into gully and carefully to boulder beach, wetsuits on and wade/swim NW (neap low tide, seems tidal at low spring tides only) ato land on platform. Best to then make level traverse R and climb on good rock (Diff?) then easyish scramblable slabs and grass to reach narrow summit arete, HP at far (SW) end. Return same route, 15m abseil from foot of upper slabs. (From landing point we climbed straight up, poor rock higher up, not recommended). | RHW | 05/07/2021 |
Descended to boulder beach to discover a lot of sea still present 40mins before low water. Jon and Rob return to the cars for all our wet suites which is much appreciated. Razor sharp limpet covered boulders and grabbing throngs of kelp add excitement to the short wade/swim to the slabs at the base of the E face of the island. Dave makes a fine lead of the increasingly loose and vegetated E face direct, to top out on the impressive summit arete. ~VD/S but poor protection and loose rock in upper section. Narrow vegetated arete provides easy if airy route to the high point at its S end. Much better descent (and ascent route) as per RHW log. | RichardM | 05/07/2021 |
Our third swim climb- although map shows as tidal, there was a lot of water at low tide. Steep, loose, unpleasant gully to beach. Swam short distance without buoyancy aids but with climbing gear and helmets and landed on slabs opposite ( directly under summit) with steep loose rock wall. Dave McG led the climb superbly and then we followed on two ropes, initially up a small gulley then traverse right then up very loose section and over awkward lip (loose/ vegetated) onto steep grass to airy, loose vegetated summit ridge. Shuffled/ walked to summit, unroped. Descended alternative, better route down blocky ridge to seaward end; short c 15m abseil down good quality rock face (? V diff climb), then unroped traverse back to landing ledge. The traverse was easier than it looked and failure would have meant a gentle slide into the sea wearing a wet suit ( but I had no heavy gear!) | Denise | 05/07/2021 |
